That's absolutely incredible that Steyr kept that side sliding wedge system from the Hahn to the AUG for dissassembly throughout the years. Basically, if you can figure out their dissassembly mechanism from 1918, you can dissasssemble their modern weapons. In-cre-di-ble. Thank you so much Ian for teaching us so much about these brilliant pieces of machinery.
7:40 slight correction, when the war broke out they stopped sending weapons anywhere, except for allies(Germany, Bulgaria), so even before Romania declared war they where not getting weapons. I have seen pictures of Austro Hungarian troops with Romanian m93 in 1914. This is because they issued everything they had in the steyr factory. Another example in the Mexican mausers, they had the same fate as the m93s.
in fact Romania ordered 50 000 and another 5000 but in 1914 after the Romanians received around 35 000 the Austro-Hungarians stopped all the weapons exports and all the non-delivered guns were grabed by the A-H. Romania entered in the war in 1916 so clearly they didn't received all the requested guns by the A-H blocking of all the exports (of weapons)

I have an Austrian model made in 1916, very nice to shoot. Ammo has become increasingly rare to find. One can convert the 38 super cartridge to the 9 mm Steyr. Thank you for the review of a very interesting firearm, as most are of that era.

gunchap It's probably for the same reason these very weapons have been "forgotten." Most people don't care about this stuff. FW fills a specific niche in the gun enthusiast sector. This stuff isn't as accessible as a shooting channel, because you don't have to know anything about guns to enjoy seeing Bubba shoot watermelons with his Deagle ;) But people like us who are interested in history and firearms design will find this stuff incredibly interesting
I actually started with watching shooting channels like FPS Russia, IW8888, and others, and then stumbled on FW, on which I got hooked, like watched every video there was available in a few days. So I guess there might be a steady increase of subs due to people like me.

Had one back in the 60's. A family friend brought it home from Wll. It didn't have any slide markings other than the "S". Had to visit the library to find out what it was. I ordered some surplus ammo through the mail (I was 16) and received a bunch of crap. It looked like the ammo was stored in a coal bin and they just shoveled some into a bag. Mixed in were a lot of other types of 9 mm. Half were duds, 1/4 were weak hang fires. It looked like the propellant was chopped up movie film. The bright shiny ones fired well. In fact too well! The gun didn't work (which is why I got to bring it home). There is a trigger bar in the right slide groove. When the gun fired there was a disconnector that was pushed down. It turns out the bar was missing and the disconnector was stuck in the down position. When I made a new trigger bar, I unknowingly built around the disconnector. With good ammo it would go full auto! Kinda" neat to see all the empties in the air at once. Talk about muzzle rise; the last 5 -6 rounds would be wasted in the sky! The friend took the gun back, but I still have some of the duds around. Now that new ammo is available it would be fun to try it again. Maybe the friend's son will let me borrow it.
Any clean 'old' ammo marked 'Sinoxide' and for Steyr-Hahn should still be ok for these pistols. I have a case of surplus RWS Steyr ammo from the 1930's that I purchased in the 1980's that I shoot once a year. I would not shoot a gun that did not have all its parts working properly.
Soo I bought two handguns and loved the classic look at the gun show, one was a rare cz52 for 300 and was good and I bought this one for 900$ without knowing its history, well as it turns out I been carrying the m1912 as a backpack gun and I tought the stripper clip loading was odd. Damn cant believe i purchased an ancient relic and still fires

My father, an infantry soldier in Patton’s 3rd army, brought one of these back. He did not say exactly where he located it, but his final deployment was in Linz, Austria.
The sights look remarkably modern compared to most of its contemporaries. So they got that right, it's a shame about the stripper clips! Do we know of any removable magazine variants Ian???
@@phlodel Some surplus 7.62x25mm ammunition comes on clips, and they're identical to the M1912 ones, albeit with a less bright finish. They work flawlessly and are quite cheap.

I want to get this pistol one day, very unique design, and well made, also appeared in Battlefield 1, and it's "tactical reload" is comical, as you can eject all unspent casings out the top with a press of a button

Interestingly, mine has a five digit serial number, with no letter suffix. It's dated 1918, with the usual Austrian military proofs. Bavarian, or just late Austrian, do you think?
Late comment, but i would assume the "08" marking on the conversion one references the "Pistolenpatrone 08" (the german 9mm Luger cartridge spec) instead of the Luger 08.
I'm always sad when I hear you starting on some tangent and it getting cut (like about the Austrian police in WWII). Those are usually some of the best parts of your videos.
I've got a Steyr Hahn myself, so neat to see you showcasing it here. I haven't fired it yet, and am unsure if it'll work or not- the hammer, if dropped and dry fired, doesn't seem to have enough strength to actually compress the firing spring at all. I still have to test it at the range to see if my eye is telling the truth on that, but if so, I have to either replace the firing spring or the hammer spring I think.
Could be an interruption, could be I sneezed, could be a I flubbed a fact - any number of things. I don't pre-script my videos, and being done on the fly I don't always get everything quite right on the first take.
+Forgotten Weapons Just a suggestion, but I think it would be better if you made those edits hard cuts rather than quick fades. The fade cuts are...odd.
@@Regolith86 In a world with no attention span (think Scotty Kilmer's audience) I prefer the fades. The way Scotty's videos have hard cuts that happen every few seconds only to remove 1/10th of a second are annoying. I like Scotty, don't get me wrong.

Ive watched a few videos on this gun and no one addresses the weird rear site can you elaborate on that design? Its just really odd how the rear site has the same half box shape as the shape of the slides part for the stripper clip. Why wouldnt it have been a single pieces of metal VS a rear site with sides on it? It just seems really odd.

How common was this sidearm during WW2? I know that a few popped up here and there among German forces; guessing mostly among SS and Police units that had to source their own firearms for much of the war. I'm also guessing the Walther P38 and PP/PPK were the most common once the war reached full swing, trailed closely by the Luger. After that I'd expect there were a lot of Browning Hi Powers and Polish Radoms, after that Mauser HSC's, Sauer 38H's and CZ27's, after that Mauser C96 (and it's variants), Femaru's, Sig 1913's and Browning 1922's and finally we reach the category that the Steyr Han falls into. Not really sure what other pistols would also be in here; basically guns that are more than one-off's on the battlefield but pretty rare to come across, like a Frommer Stop or German produced 1911 maybe. Any thoughts?

I have fired these before. What a great pistol. If they used a detachable magazine, I see no reason why this pistol would not had evolved into the modern handgun era like the 1911 has.
I literally just saw one of these up for auction, and it DOES have “9mm para” stamped right on the barrel, but no “08” on the side that I can see. What variant would this be?
It’s very a aesthetically pleasing to look at pistol, which honestly a lot of early pistols are. I’m not sure why these days pistols all tend to look like a hunky block of plastic
My 1919 dated pistol in 9mm Luger and "08" stamped, has "W (Eagle) 30" on the right side, by the trigger. I cannot see any over stamping. It has all of the other markings you point out.
I never knew how rare the Chilean version was, here in New Zealand, is more common to find the Chilean Version than a standard Austrian. I own 2 Chilean serial Steyrs, numbers 3598 and 2192.
I have a chilean model with the serial number 1428 A. I noticed that the one in the video has the letter c suffix. Is there anything I should know about it.

Hey Ian, another good review. During the 50s or 60s, North Vietnam ended up with a lot of M12 pistols from their commie cousins in Europe, maybe Hungarian and/or Romanian. They had problems obtaining 9 x 23mm Steyr ammo, but surprisingly did not bother converting the guns to 7.62 x 25mm Tokarev. Quite a few of these ex-commie guns have been sold to collectors in Australia.
most probably they received from the Russians which captured from Romanians and Hungarians (which is less probable because the Hungarians didn't used those pistols but their locally produced Fromm, both in WW1 and WW2!)
I like the looks of these pistols and I dont know why. I just wish they had a removable magazine... or do they make a model similar that has a removable mag?
The stripper clip loading is a plus in my opinion, and pretty quick if you practice. Compatible clips are also cheap and easy to find, so you'll never have to hunt down rare magazines like you would with other vintage guns.
You mention that the date would *usually* be the same on the slide and frame. Why might they not be? I have a number matching example with a “Steyr 1917” slide and “16” marked frame.
Some years, it appears the factory changed over their stamp on the slide before the Army inspectors got new proof stamps. This happened during wartime when guns were being produced as fast as possible to be provided to the soldiers.
I am asking this as a noob, so you don't have to point this out, but here is my question: why aren't stripper clips used so commonly these days? Why were they replaced by magazines? (Of course, I am not reffering to 20 round capacity rifles. I am talking about pustols like these, that still carry up to 10 rounds or so)
The US military still issues 'extra' boxed ammunition on stripper clips which is to be loaded into removable magazines because one can easily carry more ammo that way.
I have one of these. I love baiting self-proclaimed firearms experts by referring to the clips for my 9mm handgun. "THEY'RE NOT CLIPS! THEY'RE CALLED MAGAZINES!" Cue frothing at the mouth. Clips for the Broomhandle Mauser work.
I have seen one also with the +. There are also a number of these pistols with a small star following the serial number. I've collected these pistols for many years and kept notes about them.
I am looking at one that looks like s Bavarian one with the 08 on the slide. It is stamped Steyr 1919. I looked up the serial number an it would be the highest serial recorded.

i thought 9x19 Parabellum and 9x23 Steyr have the exact same bullet diameter of either .355 or .356 so why would they need to replace the barrel? it would make more sense that they just have to replace the slide with a heavier one and/or different recoil spring
I believe they were one of the lots on sale at the last auction. I'm not 100% sure, but when Ian did his "hammer prices" review, he included how much they sold for.
There was no "Austrian police" during WW2. Austria was part of the Greater German Reich. With a national police service, including militarised Police Rifle Regiments, for security duties in Occupied Europe. In 1943-4 these were redesignated as SS-Police units. So the M1912 pistols were used by the SS.
Reloading: A moderate 9mm para powder load for 115gr FMJs should be acceptable. One can use 9x23Win cases loaded to 9mm Steyr levels. I bought some 9x23 Win cases to test this, and they were OK for me.
What is actually the point of making the barrel recoil with the rest of the slide? I mean it's not done in rifles as far as I know so why do it in pistols?
I'm no expert, but as I understand for powerful cartridges the chamber must be closed before the pressure drops to a safe level in the barrel - hence the need for such a mechanism. Google "blowback vs locked breech" for more (useful) info.
The Austrian army museum has more than one full-auto M12, they're called Reihenfeuer M12/16.

Our Steyr Hahn m12 is a 1915 and it's an amazing pistol. We have had not one failure in any way it runs flawless it's quite a marvel of engineering.

Turns out the one I picked up today is one of those Romanian Contract guns re-arsenaled for the Austrian Army. Pretty cool.

@@Regolith86 In a world with no attention span (think Scotty Kilmer's audience) I prefer the fades. The way Scotty's videos have hard cuts that happen every few seconds only to remove 1/10th of a second are annoying.

Ive watched a few videos on this gun and no one addresses the weird rear site can you elaborate on that design? Its just really odd how the rear site has the same half box shape
as the shape of the slides part for the stripper clip. Why wouldnt it have been a single pieces of metal VS a rear site with sides on it? It just seems really odd.

How common was this sidearm during WW2? I know that a few popped up here and there among German forces; guessing mostly among SS and Police units that had to source their own firearms for much of the war. I'm also guessing the Walther P38 and PP/PPK were the most common once the war reached full swing, trailed closely by the Luger. After that I'd expect there were a lot of Browning Hi Powers and Polish Radoms, after that Mauser HSC's, Sauer 38H's and CZ27's, after that Mauser C96 (and it's variants), Femaru's, Sig 1913's and Browning 1922's and finally we reach the category that the Steyr Han falls into. Not really sure what other pistols would also be in here; basically guns that are more than one-off's on the battlefield but pretty rare to come across, like a Frommer Stop or German produced 1911 maybe. Any thoughts?

You can load individual rounds, but it's a bit clumsy.

Could they use the 9mm Largo (Bermang) caliber? Both calibers (9mm Steyr and 9mm Largo) had similar sizes and power.

The ONLY Steyr-Hahn I have personally seen (& I've seen hundreds, maybe a thousand) with a burst chamber is one with a Britsh arrow proof that was stamped over the chamber. Thats where it burst.
I have shot Bergman/Largo rounds in a Steyr Hahn before I knew better, and never had any bad effects, maybe I was lucky. I don't recommend it of course.

Steyr-Hahn ammo is not any more difficult to find or expensive than Bergmann Bayard or Largo of equal quality. There is a lot of cheap Bergmann or Largo which is corrosive & or questionable quality. Most of the Steyr-Hahn ammo is quality, non-corrosive ammo, even the 1930's surplus from RWS and GECO and DWM which is usually as good as the day it was manufactured.

One can also use 9x23Win cases loaded to 9mm Steyr levels. One can reload boxer primed Fiocci cases or cases that were sold previously in the USA by Midway or Graf & Sons and Hornady .
A moderate 9mm para powder load for 115gr FMJs should be acceptable.

It’s very a aesthetically pleasing to look at pistol, which honestly a lot of early pistols are. I’m not sure why these days pistols all tend to look like a hunky block of plastic

My 1919 dated pistol in 9mm Luger and "08" stamped, has "W (Eagle) 30" on the right side, by the trigger. I cannot see any over stamping. It has all of the other markings you point out.

I never knew how rare the Chilean version was, here in New Zealand, is more common to find the Chilean Version than a standard Austrian. I own 2 Chilean serial Steyrs, numbers 3598 and 2192.
That full auto version from 1916 is the "Machinenpistole 1912/1916 Storm" from BF1.

Most companies do that, first 0-9999, after that 0-9999 A, 0-9999 B, etc.

Hey Ian, another good review. During the 50s or 60s, North Vietnam ended up with a lot of M12 pistols from their commie cousins in Europe, maybe Hungarian and/or Romanian. They had problems obtaining 9 x 23mm Steyr ammo, but surprisingly did not bother converting the guns to 7.62 x 25mm Tokarev. Quite a few of these ex-commie guns have been sold to collectors in Australia.

most probably they received from the Russians which captured from Romanians and Hungarians (which is less probable because the Hungarians didn't used those pistols but their locally produced Fromm, both in WW1 and WW2!)
I like the looks of these pistols and I dont know why. I just wish they had a removable magazine... or do they make a model similar that has a removable mag?
The stripper clip loading is a plus in my opinion, and pretty quick if you practice. Compatible clips are also cheap and easy to find, so you'll never have to hunt down rare magazines like you would with other vintage guns.

You mention that the date would *usually* be the same on the slide and frame. Why might they not be? I have a number matching example with a “Steyr 1917” slide and “16” marked frame.
Some years, it appears the factory changed over their stamp on the slide before
the Army inspectors got new proof stamps. This happened during wartime when guns were being produced as fast as possible to be provided to the soldiers.
Some were also produced after the war, mine has a original 1919 stamp on it

I am asking this as a noob, so you don't have to point this out, but here is my question: why aren't stripper clips used so commonly these days? Why were they replaced by magazines? (Of course, I am not reffering to 20 round capacity rifles. I am talking about pustols like these, that still carry up to 10 rounds or so)
Changing magazines is much faster and easier than using stripper clips.
The US military still issues 'extra' boxed ammunition on stripper clips which is to be loaded into removable magazines because one can easily carry more ammo that way.
The rarest guns can have up to 3 or 4 crest markings Xx 💖 I love the slide design myself Xx and the ammo is a slightly more punchy 35acp ish ammo ❤️
I have one of these. I love baiting self-proclaimed firearms experts by referring to the clips for my 9mm handgun. "THEY'RE NOT CLIPS! THEY'RE CALLED MAGAZINES!" Cue frothing at the mouth. Clips for the Broomhandle Mauser work.

Ian, I found an image where there is a +-mark after the serial number. What does that mean? To specify, no letter after the number.
I have seen one also with the +. There are also a number of these pistols with a small star following the serial number. I've collected these pistols for many years and kept notes about them.

i thought 9x19 Parabellum and 9x23 Steyr have the exact same bullet diameter of either .355 or .356 so why would they need to replace the barrel? it would make more sense that they just have to replace the slide with a heavier one and/or different recoil spring

There was no "Austrian police" during WW2.
Austria was part of the Greater German Reich. With a national police service, including militarised Police Rifle Regiments, for security duties in Occupied Europe. In 1943-4 these were redesignated as SS-Police units.
So the M1912 pistols were used by the SS.

What is actually the point of making the barrel recoil with the rest of the slide? I mean it's not done in rifles as far as I know so why do it in pistols?
I'm no expert, but as I understand for powerful cartridges the chamber must be closed before the pressure drops to a safe level in the barrel - hence the need for such a mechanism. Google "blowback vs locked breech" for more (useful) info.
