Bret is the quintessential bar friend. He's fun to hang around when you're drinking, and he tells funny and entertaining stories, but you never really take him seriously, and you know deep down that if you were in a spot and needed a friend, he's just not the dude to call.
Joey Diaz seems to embellish a lot, but there's something real about Joey that I think that Burt is lacking. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there was that one guy (sorry, can't remember who) who was freaking out on drugs in Joe Rogan cast and thought he was going to die, called Joey, and Joey was over there in five minutes (Joey said he would be there in five and he was). Joey and him laid out in the backyard together until everything was alright. Joey seems like the type of guy you could depend on (bullshit stories, or not). Burt...I wouldn't trust him to do my laundry. And don't get me wrong. I love a lot of the comedy he's made. he's a fun dude to listen to. Just not someone I would depend upon.

@@PhantomFilmAustralia Great way to put it. Those interviews feel so plausible until you watch the bloopers and realize they're less than a second away from laughing and ruining the entire take. It's a joke. It's a legitimate artform. Then you have a drunk that genuinely believes his stories and laughs until he can't breathe and expects that to be a shtick.
Plenty of manufactured pop stars.. So why not comedians.. thank the lord we actually have actual funny ones out of the 1000 comedians (quote Joe Rogan) on earth.
And now other people are riding his wave like this TH-cam video with a million views. All stand up/podcasters talk about being in and out of character. This is clearly a character and it's funny. Some people don't seem to understand that...

No, I'm Canadian too, he said "as a Canadian, bullshit" because our border is insanely strict about weed being brought into the country. Like if they even suspect you've recently been smoking weed, even if there's none on you, they'll turn you away and tell you to come back sober. Our legal weed is so highly controlled that there was a huge recall recently because the THC % printed on the labels were a few tenths off. You can't be bringing unknown substances here. And it's stupid because your point stands, we have phenomenal products, one of my favourites is carried diamonds in terp sauce. So it's 1 gram of >80% pure THC crystals covered in live terpene resin for about $40. Some personal favorites are the 1,000 mg monsters pre-rolls, hash heavy hitters, moon rocks, hash bombs... You don't need to bring anything here. And if you try, you'll be arrested, and banned from entering Canada, and it's gonna SUCK to be you. It's not one Mountie checking cars at the waterfall. It's a huge operation and there's no "It's cool chief, wink wink" stuff going on.
@@thecountysfinest what? I done ate kangaroo meet and I’m American. What’re you trying to say? No disrespect or anything I’m genuinely asking, it’s hard to understand different cultural dialects.
I think he was reaching for the word "civilians", which is like a mafia/underworld thing. Military and law enforcement use it too. Either way, trying to apply that level of self-importance to comedians is pretty goofy.
To this day that is the ONLY comedy he has done that I find funny and it's obviously if not absolute bs then heavily fabricated. I never really got how he became so popular by essentially just being self destructive.
Absolutely zero chance his story about the Canadian boarder happened. That boarder agent would not risk his career for a guy like Bert. Plus that bus was being searched by a minimum of 3 agents. If one saw it, they all saw it.

Same. I can't stand him! Hes obnoxiously loud, constantly grandstanding and rudely dominates conversations while lying his ass off w/ stupid stories. It is frustrating to watch and not at all funny. Rogan ended up telling him to STFU and it was so over due and deserved.

It’s interesting to see the complete opposite happening to Bill Burr with the whole drinking thing. Burr has said multiple times that he had a bit of an issue with drinking alcohol but when he got married and became a father he’s said he’s drastically cut down on it if not outright quit. Bert here seems to be on the opposite path entirely, got a wife and kid but is seemingly drinking more and more.
Burr actually motivated to quit drinking ha. He was talking about it on his podcast and I was like “oh shit, this isn’t funny. Maybe I have a problem too” haha. I just wonder if Brett quits drinking he thinks he won’t be funny anymore
Well yeah bro he’s an alcoholic with money who’s on the rode all the time. What do you expect. Most alcoholics would be the same as Bert if they had the money and lifestyle.
The one thing that Burt did that made me laugh was when he brought his 32 oz jug of Kool-Aid onto the podcast with Tom Segura and got made fun of. He didn’t realize how out of touch and insane it is to drink that much Kool-Aid.
It's only out of touch when you consider yourself rich and better than everyone. Kool Aid is for poor people, not Hollywood elitists who most people don't even know.
It was 64 oz, and tom was like you dont go anywhere without that thing wtf is in it? Oh he ONLY drinks kool-aid and booze... Bert is 100% full of shit, and his jokes are all flat
I like how you mention how he thinks he contributes more to society than us. It reminds me of when Bert had Stavros on his pod and he was talking about how comics brains are different from “pedestrians” (or something to that effect), and Stav had to check him real quick, like, bro chill. Waiters contribute more to society than comedians.
I mean, yeah? Of course comics brains are different from everyone else, generally most people dont immediately look for the comedy in a situation to make other laugh. Thats the entire job of a stand up comedian
There's considerable irony in an entertainment style that promotes the idea of being bold and provocative; but also is incredibly limited in its cultural literacy.
Not that it isnt bullshit but there is no way to calculate this probability. I mean how many people do you see in a year anyway. Also, there's going to be a bias, if you are the kind of person who is willing to go out in a thunderstorm, you are going to be far more likely to see someone get struck by lightning.
I was in the military still found it cringe when the fellas would call non military civvies/civilians even worse coming from a comedian and not a good one at that
@@anonp2958 That rubbed me the wrong way too. What does he think he's in some elite class of superhuman now because he's a comedian? He may as well have replaced the word "pedestrian" with "peasant". It would have had the exact same effect.
He literally does. Because he knows the amount you can be served on the plane isn't enough for him so he literally has to "sneak" alcohol into the bathroom and drink. But that's none of my business I guess.
@@riotpb10 it is your beez wax because he’s a public figure and he’s drinking himself to death while doing it. That makes us partly responsible for glorifying and supporting his behavior. I love Bert tho

Stav doesn't actually respect "normal people", he's generally an ass, but even he understands how ridiculous it is to openly say how you're above everyone else.
Brett is just an extreme example of people we all meet from time to time. They look you right in the eye, tell you a BS story; you know they're lying and they know you know they're lying, but as there is no way in the moment to prove it, it's like they're daring you to call it out. They get off on that power dynamic.
It’s kinda like Catch Me if You Can. Even if you say “stop lying, you’re caught”, he’ll just find a new prompt in that alone. Pathological lying is tricky as fuck.

Bert is more like overhearing some drunk frat guys bullshitting about their crazy adventures in college. Even the stories with some truth to them are probably exaggerated. That's the sort of vibe I get from his comedy. He's probably not a bad guy, though.
i saw Bert preform last february, at the end of the show he closed with exactly what you’d expect. i just looked at him like “😐” and we made eye contact for a few seconds lmao keep in mind The Machine story was already over half a decade old
Dog my girlfriend at the time back in 2014 showed me the Machine - and by then it had already been told as a story for some time before that. It's been the lynchpin of his entire career.
You all clearly don’t follow him everyone knows he always closes with it. It’s not his closet it’s his encore. Most audiences chant the machine until he tells it. He talks a lot about how he has wanted to retire it but his fans always ask for it. He’s been in podcasts where rogan says you are never going to be able to not tell that story. Who cares? He has a new hour and adds that at the end
The last part really sparked my realization that he always seems to point out the average working man(customs, police, construction workers, etc) are always honored to meet the machine..and let him get away with things. A. He’s telling you who his audience is in his mind b. He’s showing indirectly they all refer to him as the machine and not Bert or his full name but only the machine c. He also admits he has zero self control by risking everything for one hit of weed
You mean friend. Seriously though, why is it that Rogen has surrounded himself with so many mediocre people? I find all of his comedy friends extremely unfunny.
A big part of earning a comedians respect is A) being willing to humiliate yourself for a laugh and commit and B) being able to shake off the scum that are the haters in stride. Bert nails both.
He’s respected because everyone knows it’s bullshit like 90% of the shit comedians say. I’m not listening Bert for a true story or life advice, I just want to laugh. Who gives a fuck if he went to Russia or not. His story was hilarious enough to earn him the name. I want to turn my brain off and laugh to him. It’s wild if anyone looks further into it than that.
@BattleBro77 what's your point? Are you classist? Also being able to send your kids to a decent college is a low bar for wealthy. Upper middle class, maybe. Your perspective may be skewed if your parents were loosers.
I find it interesting how Bert regularly mentions how Theo has "Theoism's" which is basically his embellished stories, and has mocked Theo's the on-the-fly stories before, but apparently can't stop to self reflect.
@@SaltyDylan yeah what's with these podcasts just getting all the fake laughers together? Do they think we will laugh because they do it every couple seconds?
That story of the Canadian border agent saying “I’d say it’s an honour to meet the machine have a great tour in Canada”. Like COME on man. How stupid does he think the world is. That’s equivalent to a story that a 12 year old boy would come up with to tell his buddies on the first day back to school after summer break.
You can tell when a story is full of bs when it's about them in really rare situations that the average person will never experience in their lifetime in order to look a lot cooler than they actually are. Reminds me of the youtuber Luna.
I like Burt's story about how he gaslit his wife so much about his alcohol addiction that she broke and is in denial about his alcoholism. Pretty funny.
She doesn’t mind. The sooner he dies from alcoholism, the sooner all his money is hers and she’s finally free. “Of course you’re not a drunk honey, actually, let me make you a drink.” 🤞👩🦳
I love it when people in a purity spiral get turned on by the toxic audience they helped foster. It's like seeing a man get eaten by the dogs he trained to kill.
5:20 ish is one of my most hated Bert tropes: he tells a lie about someone, then pre-empts the inevitable denial from the other party by saying, "They'll deny it." He KNOWS they'll call bullshit on the lies he's telling about them, so he just tries to gaslight everyone. This is a 50 year old man, let's remember.
You're so weak minded, you don't understand that you're caught up in the shtick. You obviously don't know much about the subject on which you speak. Its called comedy, it doesn't have to be true. Thats the 3rd wall.
Bro. As a huge tremonti fan that whole story makes no sense to me in the form of comedy, its like u took an snl skit that was never released and try to make people remember it?

When i got closer to the corner store a woman was in the street unresponsive. I figured she was hit with the impact wave of the explosion. Fire and rescue showed up right after. One of the craziest things I've ever seen.

If you hung out with him later in a different environment, you would quickly realize he's like that all the time and you either become embarrassed to be seen with him or just feel sad for him.
I think part of it is him trying to put on a show. I think he has gotten caught up in his persona (drunk shirtless frat guy that laughs a lot). I think he's friends with a lot of great comedian for a reason. People generally like him as a friend. I don't think he's a bad comedian either. He's just not as great as some of the other top-level comedians he hangs out with.
The struck by lighting thing made me laugh. I was in a stats class of almost 100 people and the professor wanted to prove something about statistics and asked us to raise our hand if anyone had been struck by lightning 3 kids did and one girl was struck twice. Completely fucked the point the prof was trying to make
What point was he trying to make? I can guess he expected nobody to raise their hands, and he’d use that to talk about sample sizes and how since there was nobody in that room struck you can say 0% of people get struck by lightning, which is not true?
Being from Florida, you’re much more likely to see lightning strikes. I saw a guy run out in the lightning with a golf club as a joke and actually got struck
It’s actually just a bummer. Especially when he starts talking about his kids. I just hope he gets healthier and happier in the future, but at this age It’s unlikely he’ll ever change his ways. All that being said, I really hope he does. His kids deserve better
His denial is legit tragic. He's been saying he's not an alcoholic on every single podcast for like 5 years straight now, despite everyone saying how concerned they are
Holy. Shit. When he starts describing severe alcohol withdrawel after saying he's not an alcoholic or powerless, just fucking wow. It's more incredible that it's spot on, and that feeling of relief coming from the drink god damn dude
I used to be a heavy drinker so i understand that most of Berts audience love him because they are also heavy drinkers, when you have a drinking problem you cling on to other people who have drinking problems that appear to have made it in life, it's a cope.
Goes for all drugs, not just alcohol. If anything, I bet Bert has caused other alcoholics to sober up. Seeing what you could end up being if you don’t stop can be crazy motivation for change.

I think that how he interacts with guests on his own podcast is enough to know how Bert operates and he wonders why his podcast never hit. The reason why Something's Burning hit and does so well is that Bert is distracted by having to cook, so he can't just talk over all his guests constantly and with zero direction, he'll just hop on like 4-5 different topics in a row without allowing the guest to getting a single thought out.
Big, overexaggerated stories work really well when there's no pretense that it is ever real. Dave Chapelle does this really well by adding in a bunch of absurdist humor so the audience knows its just a bit, he's not genuinely trying to tell a real story.

Yea but it’s overall a good reflection, especially if it keeps you from drinking.

Does anyone else have a deep sense of pity for people who create their own nickname?
When a close friend all of a sudden yells out a new title for you, seemingly as soon as they figure out what trait they’re most fond of, it can feel like earning an award for being yourself
You can’t get that type of thing from your own mind. Self nicknames are usually painfully obvious in their aim to sound badass.
I’ve never met a badass that felt the need to have a cool name
Not even Mike "The Situation" Sorrento? 🤣
@@MarvinPowell1 The situation isn’t as obvious and desperate seeming as most dudes like this. But now that you mention it anyone who feels the need to introduce himself as the situation is probably just making extra sure to not come off as an afterthought.
I work in construction and Nick names are ALWAYS given to you. No matter how much you hate it you’re gonna have to live with it. The thing is - you WANT a nickname. That means they like you despite how much you probably get your balls busted. It’s the quiet ones that get left alone that you have to worry about. 😂
Idk about North Americans, but hispanics give fucked up nicknames to the homies, it’s never something cool. I know a guy who’s nickname is “mug” in spanish cuz he is missing an ear.
The turning point for me was when he was on Theo's podcast. For no reason he started talking about how his favorite thing lately was to turn off his phone. He went to turn off his phone, then said he didn't know how to, and that he never turned his phone off. Again, for no fucking reason.
Oh godddd that punchline you ended off the video with lmfao it allowed the quantity of the mans ego to set in like seconds after the video had stopped (never heard of him before, which is funny given the video). Great content this is why I’m subbed 👌

I knew a guy who worked for a sailing company, there was big storm incoming and they had 2 guys on the water. He's his best friend, in a weird way I'd hope he would be very honest about Bert and his habits because even if it comes off as a joke (it usually is for comedic effect), I tend to feel like it's more as a way to put it out in the open so that at some point Bert will understand it's not a joke.
