  • This is my personal top 20 songs in Eurovision Song Contest 1983. Turn on closed captions for the comments. Please, enjoy!
The Eurovision Song Contest 1983 was the 28th edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It was held in Munich, then West Germany, following the country's victory at the 1982 contest with the song "Ein bißchen Frieden" by Nicole. Despite their first victory the year before, this was the second time Germany had hosted the contest, having previously done so in 1957. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcasters Arbeitsgemeinschaft der öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalten der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (ARD) and Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR), the contest was held at the Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle on 23 April 1983 and was hosted by German dancer Marlene Charell.
Twenty countries took part this year, with France, Greece and Italy all returning this year, while Ireland decided not to participate.
The winner was Luxembourg with the song "Si la vie est cadeau" by Corinne Hermes, which equalled the record of 5 victories set by France in 1977. This record would in turn be beaten by Ireland in 1994. It was also the second year in a row where the winning entry was performed last on the night and the second year in a row in which Israel won 2nd place. For the third year in a row, at least one country ended up with nul points, and in this case, it happened to be two countries, Spain and Turkey, neither of whom were able to get off the mark.
The 1983 contest was the first to be televised in Australia, via Channel 0/28 (now SBS Television) in Sydney and Melbourne. The contest went on to become popular in Australia, leading to the country's eventual debut at the 60th anniversary contest in 2015.

In my opinion the most memorable part about this contest was the stage it certainly was an interesting idea for it to look like that.
(Actually thinking about it , a video ranking the stages would be interesting)

Agree with your winner. I watched this live and was convinced after her immaculate performance that Carola would run away with it during the voting. She was the best singer that night. I'm Irish and it's not the first time Sweden finished in a lower placing than it should have. I'm thinking of 1993 when Arvingarna sang 'Eloise' and only finished 6th ! It's a song that has stood the test of time and still sounds great.

    My top 10 is:
    10) Norway (charming)
    09) Denmark (a bit weird but it's somehow catchy)
    08) Cyprus (I really like this kind of song that make me want to go see the Mediterranean See)
    07) Finland (very catchy)
    06) Luxembourg (not the right winner indeed but it's still nice)
    05) Switzerland (nice)
    04) Sweden (very Swedish, if you know what I mean)
    03) Germany (I love that kind of typical 80's entry)
    02) Israel (Israel was on fire in the 80's)
    01) Yugoslavia (I love this song with all my heart)

At the 1983 has the most charts-hits of the ESC-entries all of times. My favourite was the german entry 'Rücksicht' by Hoffmann & Hoffmann.
And the ESC 1983 was the first ESC with wireless microphones.
The camera works was also completely new, revolutionary.
Also new was that all the artists were present on the stage at the beginning of the show.

1983 was an incredible year for Eurovision. Some thoughts:
    1. The Spanish entry is one of the worst ever in the contest.
    2. Turkey was awful too.
    3. I used to find the 1983 winner undeserving as well until I checked the lyrics. Now it is one of my favourite winners ever. Though it would never win in the televoting era.
    4. Germany sent one of their best ever entries that year. I wouldn't mind if this had been their first victory instead.
    5. How did the awesome Finnish song only place 11th?
    6. 'Hi' might sound like a cheerful song but the lyrics are in fact about the holocaust, which is symbolic because Germany hosted that year.

I'm sorry but that style of singing, very national Spanish, probably heart warming for you, is really difficult to listen. It is like the sound of Eastern Europe folk songs, not for everybody. But I love others Spanish songs from XX century Eurovision: specially 1964, 1985, 1986 (Cadillac!!!) and 1998.

As a Luxembourger, I actually agree with your reasoning behing your placement of Corinne Hermes.
I haven't watched this year in full yet, but whenever I'm reminiscing on Luxembourgs victories, this is always the song that I end up forgetting.
It's safe to say that Luxembourg at Eurovision died after 1978. Hopefully, our considered return to the contest next year will bring something with more substance!

    My ranking:
Finland 🇫🇮🥇 a song only the Finns can create, amazing melody, great singer, one of my all time favorites eurovision entries! The clear winner
Israel 🇮🇱🥈 amazing song and strong message, the orchestra gives the song more power and I love it
UK 🇬🇧🥉 same as Sweden, but this song is slightly better in my opinion, but both are 10/10
Sweden 🇸🇪 amazing song, she is a legend, I have nothing to add
Netherlands 🇳🇱 really underrated nowadays, I love the melody and the song I powerful
Turkey 🇹🇷 it sounds crazy, but I love this song so much! An entry which isn't taking itself too seriously, a song which can make you laugh, AMAZING!
Switzerland 🇨🇭 I used to hate it, now I absolutely love it! Great and strong performance, I love the Italian
Luxembourg 🇱🇺 strong ballad, not my winner but a well deserved winner
Portugal 🇵🇹 Portuguese Elton John, really great song, I love the Portuguese in this one
Austria 🇦🇹 really catchy and fun song, love it!
Cyprus 🇨🇾 really underrated, great performance
Yoguslavia 🇲🇪 great song but don't deserved 4th place
Norway 🇳🇴 really a combination of other entries from previous years, but still good song
Spain 🇪🇸 not deserved last place at all, but I fully understand why it got its hate
Germany 🇩🇪 great song snd performance, so tragic story for the singer, but now I prefer other songs
France 🇫🇷 same as Germany, I used to love it way more (was my 4th!), I don't know why I don't love it now as I loved it back then
Greece 🇬🇷 great ballad, really greek song
Italy 🇮🇹 amazing song and singer, but it just an amazing year, so it's only 18th
Belgium 🇧🇪 really special but not good

Even with their own flaws, all the Eurovision contests in years ending in 3 go down as classic Eurovision years. Even if the 80's sounds and aesthetics were already present in the previous years, Munich 1983 was the first Eurovision that really screamed "THIS IS THE EIGHTIES!"

20th- I completely agree about the music being awesome but it was a silly performance.
19th- Kristi’s voice might not be everyone’s favourite but I do like her voice because she comes across as romantic and emotional.
18th- Yes, her voice might be shouty but she is very powerful. I liked how she performed without any shoes. She didn’t deserve to be last though
17th- I disagree about Corinne being shouty, I think she is more powerful than shouting 95% of the time. Her voice was very emotional and for me she will be a favourite.
16th- Cetin’s voice is nice but the song is my least favourite because it’s very repetitive with the ‘opera’ repeated in the chorus. I don’t like how he breaks into an operatic voice because it’s quite annoying.
15th- I agree with the cheesy but again I think they come across as powerful instead of shouty.
14th- Very harmonic performance. OK performance overall.
13th- She should have been much higher because her voice is amazing as she is very powerful.
12th- The backing singers are incredible and Jahn was very entertaining playing his guitar.
11th- His voice is young, cute and I love his yodelling.
10th- Her voice is nice and the song is very catchy.
9th- I love his voice, nothing else to say.
8th- What a powerhouse, very upbeat music.
7th- The female dancer is incredible and the guys are amazing singers.
    6th- Very emotional performance.
    5th- Fantastic song, very happy.
4th- His voice is very romantic, I’m undecided on the lyrics though but still a nice song to listem to.
3rd- Same as Italy, I just prefer the lyrics more.
2nd- Wow, Israel knocked it out the park with Ofra and the backing singers, they are incredible. They deserved to be second because their performance was very energetic.
1st- Carola’s voice is very powerful. It was hard to believe that she was only 16 when she made her debut and she sounds like a professional singer.
I might not always agree with your rankings but I respect your opinions.

Maybe it's me, it's that my music taste is not cultivated enough to let me relate with music from 40 years ago, but I'm afraid nothing and nobody could look or even sound actually great against that infamous backdrop. It looks so dismal, dark and narrow, when a piano appeared I wondered how could they fit it in what looks like a painfully narrow space for one of the biggest recurring events in Europe, if not the biggest. It looks like they are performing hidden behind the back side of a temporary fun fair. I know aesthetics and tastes were so different back then, but still I wonder how could anyone think it would be a good idea for the stage to look like this.

Great list. 1983 was a fantastic Eurovision year with so many winning-worthy songs. Unfortunately, Luxembourg was the wrong winner in my opinion. It wasn't a great song and her singing sounded really strained and off. I can't fathom how that song won when they had Portugal, Israel, and Sweden have fantastic songs, and the United Kingdom having the British pop song that was way superior to that of their winning entry in 1981.

I very much agree with Luxembourg not being a worthy winner. The song itself is a nice ballad, but not only she was very shouty in her singing, as you mentioned, but she also sounded out of breath every five seconds. Not a good live performance. My 12 points go to Germany, it's such a pleasant listening through and through, from the instruments to the emotions to the vocals. Sweden, UK, and Italy are my other favorites, and Belgium I just can't not love haha.
