Don't be so harsh on yourself. I was born Catholic. I strayed when I was a teenager, never even got Confirmed. I remained lapsed until 2015 when I joined RCIA at the age of 32. I finally was Confirmed on Pentecost 2016. Pray, ask the Holy Spirit to guide you. Going to Confession will help immensely. ❤

Me too! Went to Catholic school for 12 years. My husband was in boarding school for young men considering priesthood and went onto Catholic University. He has 16 years of Catholic education. We are in our 60s. Neither of us had ever heard of the Didache. Why we were never taught about this while in CATHOLIC school I wil never understand!
I am a Lifelong Catholic and I learned about the Didache while I was in RCIA, when I came back into the Church after being lapsed for years. There are many cradle Catholics that are poorly catechized. I am not implying that any of you here are poorly catechized, but I know I was, and every lapsed member of my family is. Even my Grandmother and all her friends who went to Catholic school and still practice the faith, none of them would be able to tell you what the Didache is, none of them can even defend their faith or accurately explain it. Education is essential. Also, taking an interest in learning is essential. Most parishes offer RCIA, and it is open to anyone. ❤
I’m a convert, and have recently read it. What I’ve found in a men’s group that I belong to is that we converts, because we’re coming in due to our own conversion of heart, have generally had more exposure to things like the Didache or the writings of the Fathers than many of the cradle Catholics, because they played a part in our conversion. Long story short, ask some converts in your parish for some reading recommendations!

Then you'll feel more knowledgeable because the Holy Spirit will be helping along the way. The Church needs you and your commitment. May God bless your discernment.
Thank you for an amazing episode. Did not catch this live, shared with friend that is thinking of converting to our catholic faith. Prayers for Fr Rich and his Mother. God bless you.
How wonderful that the beliefs we practice today preceded the Bible and it is so well documented. I feel so blessed that I was called to Catholicism 63 years ago.🙏
Praying for Fr. Rich parishioners. Our pastor of 12 year went on sabbatical about 18 months ago (his sabbatical was about 3 months). We all hoped he would return to our parish, but knew in our hearts we would be getting a new pastor. It is a loss, a period of grief for some, an adjustment, but mostly a lesson on earthly attachments. Always remembering Jen, St. Peregrine please intercede.
Definitely one of the best you tubes that I have watched. I had been wondering about the Didache and this answers so many questions and also undoubtedly establishes the early Church as the Catholic Church of today.
I am a novitiate for secular third order Franciscans I fast on Wednesday and Friday, and I also pray the Pater Noster multiple times a day from the office of the Paters. It is pretty interesting to see how this lines up with the Didache.
Thank you for a wonderful learning experience as I personally had never heard of the didache. Unbelievable history of the early church - and prayers for Fr. Rich, his mom, Jen, Ryan and family. Plus, prayers for Ryan Scheel and a vote of appreciation for all the wonderful research you do for the show. God bless your family and God bless Fr. King. (I am hoping Fr. Rich returns though.) This is one of my favorite episodes and plan to watch it again.
if you paid attention to the text of the didache, and the implied context, you will understand that the didache was drawing from the beatitudes, the lord's prayer, the olivet discourse, daniel, isaiah, and the plain text of matthew and mark. their mention of the apostles means that the majority of them are still alive. there is no explicit mention of persecution so therefore the neronian persecutions of 64 haven't occurred yet. the mention of meat from offerings and absence of circumcision, means that the council of jerusalem in 50 have already occurred. no mention of priests but rather, the notion of prophets implies the duties of catholic priests today, means that the levitical priesthood is still existing because to call someone a priest can only mean a levite or cohen of the temple of jerusalem. the lack of pauline theology means that the origin of the didache is outside of the greeks. the terms witchcraft, and pederasty meaning relations between an adult and a prepubescent boy and bondservants meaning slaves means that this is still well within the second temple period. pederasty was a near universal practice in the roman empire, as well as witchcraft, and slavery. take note also that at 13 years old, a jewish male was considered a man, while the rite of passage for a roman was at 14 by wearing the toga virilis. the code of ethics enshrined by the didache for bondservants for christians is unlike that of the practice of the romans because they are treated almost as equals or christians are to treat them with brotherly love, while still operating under the civil practice of the empire. it is wrong to repeat the notion that the gospels were somehow written or completed after 70 AD. this is a malicious invention of the protestant and jewish intellectuals because they could never accept the fact that jesus foretold the destruction of the temple in 70 AD. if you truly believe that jesus is God and Messiah, as written in the old testament, it is evident that all the books of the entire new testament was finished before the end of 67 AD because all of the books, epistles, and letters of the NT give you an indication that christians were unmolested by the romans. this means that the great fire of rome in july of 64 AD, had not yet occurred. whereas, the book of revelations clearly lament an apocalyptic suffering of the christians and saints, and the gemmatria of nero is clearly indicated in surviving manuscripts, 666 and 616. john could still have measured the temple because it still stood and at the same time, revelations indicate by strong allusions that all the apostles aside from john have already perished together with a lot of martyrs. nero died in june of 68 and it takes 1 to 2 months for letters to disseminate fully.
@@femaleKCRoyalsFan the limit would be december of 67 because nero died in 68. Letters would normally take up to 2 months to be delivered between rome and jerusalem, 2 weeks if you have access to the imperial mail.

today , 2 years ago, on may 12 , in sokoto NIGERIA a young Christian martyr named DEBORAH samuel YAKUBU was stoned to death by a mob of Muslim students , after being accused falsy of blasphemy. in reality she rejected the advances of a Muslim and she openly announced her love for christ. hopefully she s a martyr in heaven. pray for her soul. may 12, is the eve of the feast day of our lady of Fatima.. Christians of Nigeria are severely persecuted by muslims on a scale you just can t imagine..raise your voice for NIGERIA Christians.
I pray every day for the persecuted Church, especially in Nigeria. I've known many Nigerians in Southern California in the area where I live. They are very strong and faith-filled Catholics. We have two Nigerian priests at my parish. God bless you, and all who bear witness to Christ. I will pray for Deborah Samuel Yakubu. Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us.
The Didache has within it the Lord's Prayer, and it includes the doxology of that prayer (missing only the word "kingdom"). This doxology cannot possibly have been some later addition, and certainly not a later Protestant addition. The doxology is used in the liturgy not with the rest of the prayer immediately after the seven petitions, but slightly later on. It was probably because of this usage in the liturgy that caused the doxology to be omitted from so many Latin MSS of St. Matthew 6.
As a baptized Protestant in my 70s, I have never in my life witnessed a baptism that was not trinitarian! We baptize in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit - always!
Pre-Vatican II the church fasted on Wednesday and Fridays during the liturgical quarters, Ember Wednesdays and Fridays ... I have recently read. Also, in my direct translation of the Didache from Greek there is no mention of men laying with men.
Wow. So I can feel the energy in the room and this is obviously not the same show. I think it will take some time but it is so exciting to watch. I’m interested to see what happens when you trade another priest. Of all the challenges and difficulties, I don’t think anyone is as tempted as the priest. I still think it would be a good idea to have a semester of priesthood. So that we would have a society of priest, and some will be greater than others. And I think it will create the best foundation to do everything else that is good in this life. To have a proper understanding or perspective of what is good and bad, right and wrong and hear the best example of perfection. From the least to the greatest, each one greater than the next.
A marvelous thing slapped me right in the back of the head as I listened to this around the fourth time. It is the words of Jesus Christ, “The gates of hell will not prevail against it”, in reference to His Church that He would build. It does look like when we needed to know the details of our beginning in order to know where we are, when we became ready, He kept His promise! We know now that the beginning was the beginning and we are at this end of where it began! That’s pretty cool and very inspiring. He told us how blessed are those who have not seen yet believed… …I have to admit there was an era of life in which I wondered if doubt was the wiser part of prudence? Well, we can stop that now! Just like in the beginning, He said it, He meant it, and we can believe it!
Dear Antonella our beloved faith is a daily struggle in this harsh world. A world that is crucifying Our Savior all over again. No matter what happens to you never let go of the Lords Hand. Let Him guide you to His Heavenly Home where you belong. Start the Surrender novena. Very powerful and miraculous. God bless. Mary from England
That bit about the prophets contributing to the communities they visited reminds me of the monasteries that produce various goods, like beer, coffee, baked goods and so on.
This in, chapter 11, the Christian community even when I was young, people were allowed to come and stay but after even the 1st meal they would offer to help with their hands to assist in daily chores, if if you washed their clothes, they would wear some of yours till theirs was finished. And they would help with anything or take it upon themselves to pick vegetables or milk the cow, something of themselves in honor of the good deed you showed to them. It was up to my father to speak to them and negotiate anything further. Even visiting cousins never stayed more than a week at a time.
The Didache and Paul's writings paint a very clear picture. A lot of people were preaching. Paul warned of false preachers who preached for personal benefit. The Didache reports the same. Self proclaimed apostles were roaming the land preaching xyz for self benefit. Whats the sign of a true apostle? According to Paul "Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not the result of my work in the Lord? 2 Even though I may not be an apostle to others, surely I am to you! For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord." You are an apostle to your own converts, and as converts under Paul as he describes in 1 Cor 9 "11 If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you? 12 If others have this right of support from you, shouldn’t we have it all the more?" Apostles are nothing but hustlers of money from their converts. Paul is jail in philipians not because he preaches his gospel. He is in jail because he is extorting cash from the wrong families.
it’s called the didache or teachings of the 12 apostles. it’s one of the oldest Christian documents other than the bible. It was considered for the canon but at the time they couldn’t officially authenticate it but with later technology it was authenticated and it’s dated to have been written around the same time as the book of revelation.
I remember citing the didache to my friend who is a Seventh-day Adventist, and he looked at me like it was an alien. According to him, Seventh-day Adventist are the first Christians, which I found very amusing, and also concerning that he believed that
Is it still a good practice for families to invite your Priests over to dinner and if to come Bless your Home, you should make a monitory offering to the priest and one for the poor? Etc.?
I thought they were going to post a link to the didache? Did I overlook that. I was trying to reference the document earlier this year and wasn’t sure I was looking at the correct thing. Would help me cross-reference. 🤔 1:08:41
Interested in your comments about St Paul and the ‘cloak’ he left behind. Some, (including myself 😊) are intrigued by the idea that this is a veiled (!) reference to the Shroud rather than a random request.
What language is the Didache you are reading from translated? I have one translated from Greek and some of the words are different than you are reading… I also have another that doesn’t say what language it was translated from and it is different also
In the chapter about Apostles and prophets, doesn't the Bible state that apostles are those men who witnessed the resurrection? If that is so, then the Didache must be during the very first years of the church.k8
I like this show very much and will continue we be subscribing. But my only criticism for now is, why fhe bobble heads?? Iys distrating or cringe. Perhaps in the background would be better. Overall i enjoy the content.
I am Protestant and we have followed the Didache teaching for my life of 60 years. Those who seek God will find God. Nothing to do with a denomination. It is for the universal church of Jesus Christ - all believers in Jesus.

I've been saying die-dack, thankfully also only in my head lol

This is the way
Father Matt's voice is familiar. But I can't completely recall where I heard him before this episode.
Matthew 6.
Thank You All...this was exactly what I was looking for!
Excellent content
As a baptized Protestant in my 70s, I have never in my life witnessed a baptism that was not trinitarian! We baptize in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit - always!
This episode was so awesome! Thank you guys.
Hey guys, great show! I was wondering (hoping), is there a link to the text Fr. Was reading from? Just asking
I love how simple and effective the Didache is. It make sense
My brain, every time they said “the way”: 🎶 Where were they going without ever knowing the way?🎶
What is a good Catholic translation of the didache available in print?
Check EWTN.
Not sure if it's even available in a hardcopy print. I have an ebook from Amazon on my kindle.
Hi Fr Matt! Miss seeing you!
Probably my favorite one yet! Wow!
Doesn't that sound like Mary's messages also, where she begins with 'my child'?
Any insight on the messages from Sr. Amapola at the Mission of Divine Mercy, TX? Maybe the next show?
They are not in good standing with the Church
Thanks!
This priest has such a similar voice to father pagano with the same inflections the same Rosy cheeks and he looks so much like him. It's weird.
I thought the same!
Is there a new book or article that they are referencing? Please put links in the note sections. Thank you.
it’s called the didache or teachings of the 12 apostles. it’s one of the oldest Christian documents other than the bible. It was considered for the canon but at the time they couldn’t officially authenticate it but with later technology it was authenticated and it’s dated to have been written around the same time as the book of revelation.

Thank you so much for your reply.
@@lillyCfields no problem! I recently have been learning so it’s fresh in my mind.
@Poeina wow, that's cool, I need to find a copy!
@@Poeinait's like an early catechism of sorts. I have an ebook version on my kindle.
"It's the best. I love it"
...Nacho Libre is the best. And I love it.
I remember citing the didache to my friend who is a Seventh-day Adventist, and he looked at me like it was an alien. According to him, Seventh-day Adventist are the first Christians, which I found very amusing, and also concerning that he believed that
Where can I buy a Didache that has been approved by the church? I've seen some in Amazon but I don't know if it was translated by a protestant.
Try Tan publisher.
You can download it for free on new advent
Is it still a good practice for families to invite your Priests over to dinner and if to come Bless your Home, you should make a monitory offering to the priest and one for the poor? Etc.?
I thought they were going to post a link to the didache? Did I overlook that. I was trying to reference the document earlier this year and wasn’t sure I was looking at the correct thing. Would help me cross-reference. 🤔 1:08:41
Look at New Advent
So interesting - never heard of a Didache
Interested in your comments about St Paul and the ‘cloak’ he left behind. Some, (including myself 😊) are intrigued by the idea that this is a veiled (!) reference to the Shroud rather than a random request.
What language is the Didache you are reading from translated? I have one translated from Greek and some of the words are different than you are reading… I also have another that doesn’t say what language it was translated from and it is different also
I love Father’s kind gentler voice…. No need to emphasize his cool dudeness
Shouldn’t the Didache be included in the Catechism and the Bible? For all
Catholics to have
It might be on the Laudate app.
The Eucharistic prayers were whispered so to be preserved and protected from abuse, only known to the the priests and bishops.
Thank You awesomw show
how is Father Rich
What about Paul’s gospel? He refers to it as few times. What about the marcion gospel and Q Gospel?
Consider reading 'St. Paul's Gospel' by Monsignor Ronald Knox.
I feel I need to see a priest for my language that has accompanied complex ptsd...
I was wondering if the Didache supports the Cult of the Virgin.
Why did you pick the least popular thumbnail?
Those who is last is first
We are the only Church who technically has a holding for the work of the Church. With our goods stewarded over 2000 years.
They found it in the 1800s? Really cool that’s awesome pre Calvinist I believe
How can Protestants not convert when presented with the Didache?
I remember citing it to a Seventh-day Adventist friend who denied infant baptism, and he thought I was a lunatic for even bringing it up
Pride
I am Protestant and we have followed the Didache teaching for my life of 60 years. Those who seek God will find God. Nothing to do with a denomination. It is for the universal church of Jesus Christ - all believers in Jesus.
@@susanr-jr2bt It describes the Roman Catholic Church in the early centuries with Bishops and Priests and the Mass. Protestantism didn't exist for another 1,500 years. Please look into the One Holy Apostolic Church of the Creeds
What about Thomas? Why didn't he write?
They were sent by Christ to teach and preach, not to write. Andrew, Phillip, Nathanael, Bartholomew, Matthias and others wrote nothing that we know of.
The Bible doesn’t explicitly speak of gambling per say either, but we know it’s included in curbing our excessive natures : to over do at work, hoard, over-eat, drunkenness etc.
Jesus did not give Apostles a New Testament, but church authority & Holy Ghost “For ever.”
(CCC 83, 171, 891) (Mathew 18:17-18, 28:19-20) (John 14:16, 16:13, 20:21-23, 21:15-17)
Oh my gosh I just realized you guys totally stole Rush Limbaugh's intro, or it's very close anyway😂😂😂
I have a Didache Bible. Where are you reading from.
Jasher 2
For in those days the sons of men began to trespass against God, and to transgress the commandments which he had commanded to Adam, to be fruitful and multiply in the earth
20 And some of the sons of men caused their wives to drink a draught that would render them barren, in order that they might retain their figures and whereby their beautiful appearance might not fade
21 And when the sons of men caused some of their wives to drink, Zillah drank with them
22 And the child-bearing women appeared abominable in the sight of their husbands as widows, whilst their husbands lived, for to the barren ones only they were attached.
"AND THE MASON BELIEF IN THE EARLY CHURCH"???
