An excellent summary of the pros and cons. I opted for a gaming laptop two years back (Omen 15 RTX 2060 i7) as needed a laptop for general work in a quiet setting and found the gaming specs much quieter than general use models. If the CPU power is throttled back 50% in the power plan the fans never spool up at all but plenty of power for all use. General / business laptops with lower specs that have used often seem to be more poorly cooled and uncontrolled noisy spool up of fans.

If you're buying a gaming laptop, look at reviews. There are many variations of GPU performance across the same e.g. 3080 GPU, in various laptops. It depends on clocks and power allocation to the GPU, how fast a particular laptop model will game, versus another.

The only reason I'm truly considering building a gaming PC is because I want to go through that experience of building it from scratch and see how it runs. But those GPU prices though, lol its going to be a long time before that happens. I just like the simplicity with laptops, the portability when you're going to visit friends/family and I admire how a device at that size can perform so well. Just buy your stuff based on your specific user case and you'll be fine.

I've had 3 gaming laptops in 2 years. Great machines. I started with an HP Omen, and moved way up to an Alienware X17 R1. Worth every penny. The performance is way beyond acceptable, and what you get for your $$ is excellent performance in a form factor you can throw in a backpack. Do it! It's worth it!

It was cheap and with some extra RAM and an extra SSD can pretty much do anything I want. Surprisingly it can also run VR games at low settings on my Quest 2 (though not my HP Reverb). I've just been away for a week and it's been great. But it is good to get back to my desktop.

I decided I would move from a very decent Macbook pro to a Windows Gaming machine back in March, its how I found your channel and have enjoyed learning lots through it.
I spent a long time weighing up options and ended up going with the portability of a laptop and got a very decent custom build from PC Specialist.
4 Months later im still happy with my choice, however I have used the portability less and the machine has in large part been used in a desktop setup running a 4k screen with separate mouse and keyboard, i even had to get an additional webcam and microphone as the built in ones were so bad. But the regret of not getting a desktop machine is still not there, the means to pick this up and take it other places, even just to other rooms remains important and helpful and having never gamed before on a PC I have been incredibly happy with it out performing my xbox series x - comparisons to desktops just arent a thing for me at this time.
In future i will likely get a desktop but Im still happy with my choice.

Why would fan noise bother you when 95% of people will be wearing headphones when gaming? I have an Omen 15 2021 with a 3070 and an 8 core Ryzen 7 and when gaming I have the fan on at near to full blast. I don't hear it over my headset, while I also don't go over 60 degrees when gaming for hours on end, which is incredible for a laptop playing games like Cyberpunk and Baldur's Gate 3 at 1440p. The only thing I wish gaming laptop's would stop doing is putting crappy 720p webcam's on top of the display which makes the top bezel larger that in needs to be. Either include a good webcam or don't bother at all.

As someone who's planning to get a gaming laptop...
I wouldn't mind dealing with the cons of it being plugged in the wall for heavy gaming, the fan noise (I can just get a cooler) and battery life.
Meanwhile, the pros of convinency of taking it where I need to go for work, school or other things I might need while I'm out. It's like a portable gaming setup or Workstation (depending on the laptop) and easy to take with you anywhere so I don't specifically have to do things from home all the time.
Imo nothing really beats the portability and convinency while being able to game, use it for work, school and other personal hobbies. Then coming in with it being multi-purpose on the go.
I understand everyone getting a PC, but it all depends on ones budget, how demanding it is and personal preference.
So it's really up to you and what you're looking for...
    I hope this makes sense.

I tried several laptops, also including macbook pro and Imacs. Sure they all have nice specs, but come summer in the sub-tropical climate where I live and these things are noisy and get throttled to death because they overheat in those tiny little compartments with poor compromised cooling. Compared to my desktop which has a HUGE Noctua fan/heatsink, I can play full speed quiet gaming in the middle of summer in a heatwave and the CPU hardly gets hot. My laptops in this scenario however get so hot the graphics start degrading badly, and sometimes reset from over heating.

I like to get a mid tier gaming laptop every 2-3 years. Cost a lot to upgrade. However, I always sell my old laptop and get some value back. Usually, I’ll get between $400-$700 back from selling one. All depends on how popular and good the model I picked out was. When I upgrade to a new laptop, I’m getting a whole new setup. New screen, new ram, new motherboard, new processor, new graphics card, etc. if you factor in the resale value and the fact that your getting a brand new setup with every laptop purchase throughout the years, it’s worth it to me. Not that much more $ than a desktop if you take all that into account. Plus I can play it everywhere!

i just replaced my 1 year old mid-range PC (Ryzen 1600AF, 1650super) with the 2021 TUF A15 (Ryzen 5800h, 3060mobile) and the performance jump was significant.
While mine will be on the desk mostly, it nice to be able to detach and take it away on holidays, or to the loungeroom when i need to.
I predominantly edit photos (Where the GPU takes a lot of load) but game a bit so good to have the best of both worlds.
I got the A15 for ~$1650 AUD, and will sell my old Desktop for ~$1000 so a no brainer for me.

Honestly, I preferred to buy parts to build my own pc. I just can't justify the outrageous prices that people are setting for these graphics cards right now. I even considered prebuilds, but for some reason I found a lot of videos that suggested that a lot of the SIs, and even trusted brands like Lenovo and HP are just not up to par with regular pc builds and that one should be really careful before considering buying a prebuild. Especially if they don't list the manufacturer of who makes the GPUs. That whole situation made me fearful of considering a prebuild at this time.
And what's even harder for my situation is that I need thunderbolt ports to not sacrifice latency on my monitor while being able to seamlessly switch between my work from home laptop and whatever my gaming machine is, and I have yet to find a compatible motherboard that supports it if I went down the build route right now.
That is why I bought a Lenovo Legion 5 laptop to use right now. Is it worth it considering I won't be actually using as a laptop all that much? No. Definitely not worth it in that regard. In terms of price however, it is. For right now anyway. Long term value won't be there, but I honestly could not stand to still be using my MX150 gpu Acer laptop another day that I bought 4 (coming up on 5) years ago. It's been getting awfully slow and even after a factory reset, still can't play any modern games even on very low settings.
It is unfortunate that I could not wait several more years to upgrade (and I probably still could have if I just not decided not to play any modern games for a few years), but I didn't. I wanted to play more modern games and didn't want to wait any longer. Not objectively the best decision, but the best one I could have made given the circumstances.
For me, it was worth it to buy the gaming laptop at this point in history. I can't say it's the best for everyone. I still believe the actual desktop pc is best for my needs, but this was the best I could do for the time being. Thank you 2020.

They're almost near a gaming desktop performance. Make sure to invest on at least an RTX 3060 with a full 115w tdp with at least 16gb ram that I would think is the sweet spot. I bought a legion 5 recently and it is my best bang for buck of this year. Might want to hold off until the 2022 legion 5 gets released though.
