We Spent Over $1000 on Quadlock, Rokform, Mous and Peak Design Cases. Which Brand Was Best?

  • This video has been weeks in the making. We spent over $1000 on mountable cases and accessories and unless you’re riding motorcycles, the best mountable iPhone case is going to be the Mous Evolution w/ IntraLock. We came to this conclusion after testing each product for the protection it will offer your device, the design of the mount, the strength of the mount against twisting and pulling and the different types of mounts you can buy.
We’ve done in-depth reviews for each product in the video. Here are the links:

    3:40 Mount Buyer’s Guide
    5:21 Final Rankings
    6:26 Stay Away From?
    -Protection-
-Quadlock and Peak Design are single layered cases. Not great in terms of drop
-Rokform And Mous have larger corners for drop and screen protection
-Mous Evolution is the only case that offers TPE and TPU protection. Other cases only offer TPU protection.
    -Mount Design-
-Cases either fall into twist or snap mounts. Quadlock and Rokform both require you to twist the device into the mount.
-Quadlock and Rokform have different types of mounting mechanisms. Both use twisting mounts and locking twisting mounts. Locking twisting mounts are annoying to use.
-Peak and Mous use a snap type of mount where you press the mount into the back of the case to secure it and press buttons to release the mount.
-Snap mounts are easier to deal with
    -Mount Strength Test - Twisting-
-Quadlock was the easiest to twist off
-Mous took a bit of effort to twist off but still came off
-Peak Design’s mount stayed on but we broke the case
-Rokform stayed on and didn’t break
    -Mount Strength Test - Pulling-
-Quadlock was the only product that came off the mount. The case almost came off the iPhone.
-Mous stayed on during the pull test
-Rokform stayed on during the pull test
-Peak Design came off eventually but we’re not sure if that’s because of the broken case
    -Mount Buying Guide-
-If you’re thinking about getting a mount for a motorcycle, your only choice is Quadlock. Apple warns that motorcycles may damage the camera on the iPhone and Quadlock offers a dampening option for their mount
-For bikes, we’d stay away from the Rokform Sport Bike mount given that the mount will move around because it’s attached via velcro. It’s terrible to use.
-For cars, we’d go with the Mous or Peak products because they’re officially MagSafe compatible so they will work with any MagSafe car mount. Rokform is also MagSafe compatible BUT the magnets on the case are so strong that they interfere with wireless charging
-For the creatives, Mous offers a tripod mount which means you can attach your iPhone to all the old GoPro accessories you have! We mounted our iPhone 13 on Monty!

The mount you have from Peak Design looks like the bicycle mount, they also have 2 Motorcycle mounts and yes they have a great vibration damper tech on those mount included in the design, you don’t have to buy an extra rubber insert like quad lock, they just designed it in and right the 1st time.

    • @Moleskineman
      @Moleskineman ปีที่แล้ว +2

To say that they designed it right the first time implies that Quadlock designed it wrong. Cameras weren't nearly so advanced when Quadlock first came out, they didn't have floating lens elements or image stabilisation and many didn't even have autofocus. Quadlock has adapted to a changing market, Peak Design came in after that change had already happened.

I went with peak design and I got the wallet and I can’t be happier with it. The built in loop on the case I use all of the time and the wallet with the built in stand is so useful without any extra accessories.

Great review, been waiting for this comparison!
Just thought to mention the fact that Peak Design do have a motorcycle mount, with built in vibration protection. Supposedly “best-in-class”, but I would love to see a comparison with the QuadLock 😉
    Keep up the good work!

The Peak Design case can also be
used with action mounts through their
Creator Kit. Peak Design also has a
vibration proof dampener for motorcycle mounts. I also noticed that you guys are using pre-production units (the release buttons on your mounts jut out while the production versions are flush with the mount). Will you be retesting with production models?
    Thanks for the comparison tests.

Love Mous cases, but I’ve been using Quadlock mounts for years and don’t want to spend the money to switch to the Mous system. The design looks promising though. I can vouch for Quadlock working well for motorcycle use. I’ve never had one fail and the cases, while simple, have always done their job in drops. Nice comparison.

I've been using a Quadlock for 5 years and to say "you'll end up blindly rubbing the back of the case on your mount until it fits" just tells me that you haven't used it enough. I can get it on first time, you just learn where it goes in the end. I can easily operate it single handedly while riding my bike...it just makes me think these cases aren't for you and you don't really need the functionality they offer.

I bought both Peak Design and Quad Lock for motorcycle. I went with the Peak Design due to the ease of use with 1 hand.
The Quad lock, you have to get it aligned just right push down hard, and twist, which can be hard to feel for with a glove on. Using 2 hands with one hand pushing down on the tab makes it easier though.
The Peak Design, you just slap it on and it sticks right on easily.

I got a stick on Quadlock adapter for my Mous Limitless 2.0 case and it ended up casing the Mous case to rip apart at the seam from the excess stress and vibration, while making the case horribly bulky and uncomfortable to hold. So glad I got intralock instead for my new iPhone.

With quad lock, you can order an adhesive adapter. Use it with almost any case. Currently using a pelican case. I’ve also been able to utilize my RAM mounting system with quad lock. Quad lock offers a ball adapter. Which is compatible with RAM’s B-size ball. I’ve also been able to fan of their selfie tripod. It’s sturdy and is versatile.

Performs flawless, not a scratch on my iPhone. I really like their form factor and ecosystem too. I have the mobile tripod and that thing is great. For what it's worth, my experience has been great.

The magnets of the Rokform never stick to anything I don’t want them to. I’ve been using it for a year in my car, stuck to the fridge, metal cupboards and even my car and it’s honestly the best case you can use. I also use a Belkin 3 in 1 boost charge pro MagSafe charger and it charges quickly and efficiently. My everyday case combo is the Rokform Rugged Case for the 13 Pro Max and the Sport Ring and I’ve been using iPhones since the very first iteration and this is the first case I have used that I barely ever remove. All of my other iPhones had at least 5-10 cases that I would switch intermittently but with the Rokform: the functionality, magnetic mounting capability and protection I don’t need a second case.

Ive used the Rokform case on my motorcycle and even took a crash with it. My phone was perfectly fine. The twist mount feels very secure and yes it does vibrate but it’s not coming off unless I want it to.
The magnets on the Rokform are pretty strong but as someone who works around a lot of magnetic stuff I can stick my phone to…it’s actually very convenient to just stick it to a magnetic surface to watch videos and stuff.
The only problem I’ve had in 2 years of having the rokform case is that it doesn’t work at all with my anker 3 in 1 MagSafe charger it’s worked on some other MagSafe chargers but not this one for some reason. Like I can’t use the charger with the case on it at all.
I’m considering switching over to the mous system but I’m worried it’s gonna fall off my bike go in at highway speeds and that’s when you need it to hold the most.

Great review, wish I had this a while ago but I guess not many of these existed back then. As a motorcycle rider with a quadlock the vibration dampener is great. Before that I had 3 repairs of my camera. One thing I found odd in the review is thew way they test removing and locking the cases. Not sure what weird way you are removing them but the quadlock is really easy with one hand even with moto gloves. At the beginning putting the quadlock was weird, but you get used to it and get a feel for what's the right angle. That said every now and then it is very annoying.
I haven't heard of anyone's quadlock getting released during a ride, nor have I ever felt it would. So really there is no reason for me to switch. If I had to buy again I'd probably check the Mous IF it had a vibration dampener. Alas I already bought a bunch of mounts from Quadlock so I don't see myself buying a bunch again.

Thanks for the video and spending the $$$ so we don't have too. Having just purchased a iPhone 13 pro where I mostly mount my cellphone on my Harley (crazy vibration), not so much in my car or office. When I started riding, I was told that the RAM mount was the best until my iPhone 6+ started having the 'unfocusing-death' camera issues, however, I've been using the RAM X mount for about 3 years with my iPhone 8 without any camera issues. With the Quadlock vibration dampener and the new "magsafe" cases, I am leaning towards Quadlock. I've also heard the Peak Design has 'Best-in-class vibration isolator'. I would love to see a dampener comparison as well as a price/value comparison... some of the these systems are $$$$

iPhone 12 mini, got a Rokform case. Love it a lot because of the strong magnets, however using it in my car with a magnet holder sucks because it’ll spin around as I drive which is annoying. Planning on getting an iPhone 15 plus and I got a quadlock case and add ons because I plan on using it with my motorcycle. I really like both of these cases but for different reasons and I do recommend both cases depending on what you need a case for.

I'm struggling with which case/mount system would be ideal for mountain biking, with a iPhone 12 Pro Max. The Mous would be great, but it seems they don't do the Intralock case system for my phone. The Rokform with the stem mount is tempting, though pricey. The Quad Lock seems alright, though maybe not as secure as I'd like. I think no matter which one I go with, I'm likely to be switching cases for when I ride and going back to my regular Apple leather case the rest of the time.

I’ve used quadlock for mountain biking in BC and never had a problem (I do not recommend having your phone mounted on the bike, no matter which case, on descents though). I’ve also used it for motorcycle riding. It’s a good system. The locking mechanism gives me a more secure feeling than the other systems shown here. Except for Rockform which I used for motorcycle riding for a bit, but their cases are pretty ugly.

MTBer here. I've had a rockform case for 3 or 4 years now. I have 3 mounts in 3 cars , their kick stand and a MTB mount they didn't show in this video. My worry is that , after years of use the kickstand doesn't lock in as well as it did. Guess the nubs on the case are wearing out. However their MTB mount has a lock mechanism. You can not remove it with a twist. You have to depress the lever. The stem mount does not have this, so I worried the case can get twisted out on a crash. The handle bar mount they showed here does have a lock mechanism. But as they stated it gets lose. There's a 3rd mount for the handle bars not shown in this video. That thing is solid. It's mounted with a screw clamp. 10nm of force. And it has a locking mechanism. It's been down black diamond runs and hasn't budged

Just watched and commented on your quad lock review video and mentioned I just got quad lock and like it but open to try other options. Peak design looks great but so expensive. I thought quad lock was expensive. Peak design doesn't have anything for Note 10s either. It's a 2 year old phone, but 2 years isn't THAT old. $900 two years ago. Mous is interesting too but again the price oof. I will say the quad lock isn't that bad to get on, it took me two days before I could pretty much get it on like second nature. But I do wish the quad lock cases had a flat back. I am not big on large cases tho and the quad lock case is THICKER than the Spigen case I was using before but the texture feels nicer so it's an upgrade for me! 🤣

Awesome review, something additional though from an Android user. The Peak case for the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra states that it cannot be used with the S-Pen because of the magnets, and Peak doesn't do a bike mount for anything other than iPhones. Finally, the only one of these that offers any kind of rain protection is the Quad Lock (in the form of an optional extra that slips over the top). I really wanted to find something better than the Quad Lock, but they seem to have the others beat on price and coverage of different phone models.

What do you mean they don't do a bike mount for anything other than iphone? The mounts are modular.. if you have a mobile case or universal adapter, any mobile mount will work regardless of phone type. That's the point.

Mous says that they have a motorcycle mount coming out. Have you seen it yet? Wonder if they will have vibration dampening.

The Mous Motorcycle mount now has vibration dampening. The Peak motorcycle mount also has vibration dampening. Its build in if you buy the motorcycle mount. RIP Quadlock literally about to return it.
PS. Vibration dampening makes your phone shake more than normal. Not ideal for videos on regular bicycles.

Your mount strength tests are unfair to the Peak Design system. In the twist strength test, you clearly didn't put the same amount of stress on each mount. Quadlock disengaged easily for you, Mous also disengaged, while Peak Design didn't disengage at all (but you heard a cracking sound, noted). This shows to me the amount of force you put on the Quadlock was much lower (because the mount disengaged before you could even put more stress on it, thus ensuring the material would not fail because the mount itself failed way earlier than the material). Same story for the Mous mount. The Peak Design mount held as strong as the material of the locking ring allowed. That looks to me like a clear win for Peak Design - the mounting system held as good as the material itself (every material in the world has a breaking point btw). Once the material cracked, I bet at that point you were putting significantly more twist force on the Peak Design mount than you were putting on Quadlock or Mous at their respective failure points. Then you proceed to rank Peak Design below Mous despite the fact the Mous mount must have disengaged with less force required.

What about the need for vibration protection on e-bikes without suspension? I ordered Mous Intralock few days ago and now I’m slightly worried that I may damage my camera long term.
    Any thoughts?

    • @Moleskineman
      @Moleskineman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

e-bike won't make any difference; the issue is the vibration of the engine, not the motorised vehicle. I think you'll be fine. I used my iPhone 8 which had optical image stabilisation with a Quadlock for literal years and never had an issue; I've now been using my iPhone 13 on my bike handlebars for ~6 months and it's been flawless, too.

@@Moleskineman Thank you, I wasn't aware that the engine vibration caused it. I thought it was due to bumpy roads.

do you think the Quad Lock MAG cases will change your conclusions somewhat? It’s finally flat! Be interesting to see how well it works with a regular MagSafe car mount/charging puck. Seems like the Quad Lock MAG will eat into the sales of their non-locking twist mount, but make the cases a better product.

I’ve definitely had the case fail on my iPhone 8 Plus, I have a strict “don’t ever take it out of the case” policy because of how quickly the case stops working on push-bikes. It stays locked on, but occasionally the phone falls out! I would have rather the lock failed 😣 Quad Lock replaced my case for free but the back of the phone remains cracked.

I have a note 20 ultra and the rockform does its job and stays in place but connecting to other things while in the case is touch and go. And.. using the pen is a no go, it does not register the pen. I am disappointed. Maybe a quad lock would be better.

You shouldn't rely on a phone case to begin with. People can drop their phones hundreds of times, and it's only the stupid drop at knee-height that cracks the screen.

    • @ancient_void
      @ancient_void ปีที่แล้ว

It was their mount that failed, not a case failure. I wouldn't trust any case to keep a phone safe from a drop off of a bike. I should be able to trust a device that I pay 50+ USD for to do what it was supposedly designed to do: keep a phone securely mounted to the handlebars of a bicycle.
