    Be careful selling printables. Especially high-resolution files of your artwork like I see so many people doing. There are so many people out there who will disregard your license and think you're an easy target for stealing your images. Lawsuits are EXPENSIVE and STRESSFUL.

      I struggled with this problem too, and heres what i learned; tiny little watermarks on part of your art mean *absolutely nothing* to an art thief. They’ll blur that out and still sell your work. So heres a better idea… And shoutouts to wizyakuza for this cos he started doing this after people relentlessly kept stealing his work…
      1. Watermark the *whole page* yes. I said it. The whole thing. Now im not saying have it so dark that it now outshines your art, but have it noticeable enough that if some fool were trying to steal it, there would be no point because every section of that page would contain bits of your watermark. So much so that to even remove it or blur it would completely destroy the image itself, thus destroying the thief’s ability to sell it.
      2. Only ever Upload the *lowest resolution good quality photo!* of your work. So, good enough to be viewed on a phone screen, but bad enough that the minute its blown up to any size bigger than that, its pixelated and looks terrible.
      This for obvious reasons stops thieves from being able to sell your work because its impossible to blow it up to a decent size without completely destroying the image. You only ever give over the actual high quality file once the customer has paid.
      Doing both of these together will make life a living hell for any peasant scumbag trying to steal your work. It may not completely stop them, cos obviously a rat will always be a rat. And will always find ways to do rat things. but it will sure minimize the chances of theft happening.

    I made $64,000 selling my pdf book on a site like squarespace (I use teachable because I have a course creation background). The great thing about the method she is talking about is you get to keep most of the profit. If I used a publisher I would have to sell 4x as many books to make the same profit. I would also have a printed book I would have to worry about how it comes out, how it ships to the customer. It would be so much hassle. I just sell access to the 230 page pdf through teachable and 97 percent is mine. I sell courses on third party websites and they take most of the profits (made $2.7 million in profit this way but $6 million in sales, I made less than the companies that sell my course). I actually make more selling my pdf book per student than I do selling a 30 hour design course. Crazy. I might even start running large scale ads to my pdf book so I can see if I can scale this further. Such a great video and she is right on her advice to you guys! You got a new Sub from me!!!!

    Great reminder that artists own their images and should be looking for ways to leverage that asset! We think Kelsey mentioned in a previous video that when artists sell an original, it's important to be clear if you are retaining rights to the image, so you can use it in other ways, including digital. Important advice!

    Your point about people suddenly having to ship things and that being their new job (however you phrased it) is I think the most boring part of the TH-cam art vlogs that we see. I prefer to see the artists talking about what they are making, what choices they are making. Instead it becomes a person in a mailroom with some "omg so cute!!!" stuff interspersed.
    Digital makes sense. I haven't had luck with it. People don't have printers and/or are lazy and don't want to get things printed locally for themselves. But I also don't sell workbooks. Glad it's worked out for you! You've created value and I enjoy your videos and your podcast.

    Thank you Kelsey, Your viewpoint basically confirms what I've been saying to myself, in spite of all my family members saying the process isn't lucrative, or a waste of time.
    There are a lot of digital stores out there, where you can purchase things created by artists. You just have to know where to look, and often times these digital platforms may take a cut for hosting and distribution, etc. but it's still a passive revenue stream. You create the content one time, and the company then licenses out the usage of that product, locked behind digital distribution security measures, to prevent duplication.
    To me, This is no different than a writer creating a book, and then getting it published. and yet somehow, nobody seems to even comprehend how viable it is, because the arts are one of the first things that gets cut out of schools! I even remember my school having a walk-out to strike against the lack of funding that art teachers got!
    I feel like I'm swimming uphill when I talk to those people, so I don't even bother!

No amount of posted legal warning on your shop is going to stop someone from doing this. It’s the Internet. Basically the Wild West. As a 50-year-old, art school trained digital artist who now works for a government contractor, I have always given a piece of advice to young artists (and young people in general) that you rarely EVER hear because it sounds negative but…the truth is, in spite of the World endlessly repeating the phrase “You can do anything you set your mind to do”, the harsh reality is that “You also have a limited pool of time, energy and personhood to accomplish everything that you can accomplish, and everything in the world will fight you tooth and claw to steal that time, energy and personhood, which you begin adulthood already short on, and with every year that goes by, that limited pool of time, energy and personhood shrinks smaller and smaller.”
    So the truth may be that you can do “anything” but the harsh reality is that you will never do “EVERYTHING” that you want, and each wasted minute and expense of energy causes that “everything” to shrink. Sorry to say, but that is reality and a reality that as a young person, I used to say, “That’s stuff that only old people worry about.” I swear, it feels like that was just yesterday, and it will feel the same for you.
    The key (aside from hard work) is to also work HARD at streamlining your habits, processes, workflows, organization, to-do lists, image database, practices, living space, time wastage, etc, mitigating or even reclaiming every minute of time and every newton of energy that life progressively causes you to shed. By personhood, I mean that you have only one body that can be in only one place at a time, only two eyes and two ears that can only study one thing effectively in a given moment and only two hands that can only produce so much product. So, the “You can do anything” phrase becomes an extremely precarious philosophy that a large majority of young people fall back on too easily without realizing how time accelerates, how responsibilities and time sinks multiply with age, and how much sacrifice you need to make just to mitigate the loss (or waste) of time, energy and personhood. Remember, the world is full of people trying to streamline their lives better than you for that resource that you are also after, be it a job, media attentions, exposure, networking, opportunities, etc.
    Another key is to wage war against interruptions! Interruption is the apex predator of inspiration and productivity.
    Remember: you have a limited pool of these. Protect that pool and use it judiciously to get ahead of the competition.

      I’m one year older than you and my advice to young people is to not be put off by worrying about tomorrow by enjoying your life and that you can do anything if you relax rather than focus on fear of time to get you there.
      It’s desire and passion and listening to speeches like this one below which was given by Steve Jobs who have succeeded in making their dreams happen will show you the way.
      These words he spoke are forever in my heart.
      “So don’t let the noise of other people’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
      Trust yourself, you will get there💖

      @aigoated ปีที่แล้ว

      As a young person you can learn a significant amount of information in a short amount of time. Simply time managing properly and having the resolve will open up enough time to develop habits, however it is also difficult develop. The more you do it the faster you get at it so your skill and pay off improve. You have control over your free time so use it effectively. Most people who talk down on things rarely stay consistent with it. Considering youre a young person you have years to learn and using as much of your free time as early as possible will make a huge impact 10 years down the line.
      But realistically you should start seeing results sooner depending on your time invested.
      I say this as a person who is studing music production, and a current music producers, im learning how to draw on the side and have an etsy shop, ive learned how to set up websites, marketing and learned to play piano and guitar within 2 years. My work is finally paying off, considering how many softwares i had to learn for digital art (clip art studio), music production (fl studio), editing software (canva), and for my cameo sticker cutting machine (silhouette studio). Its all possible, I really didnt think id be able to learn so many things considering i entered a beginner but i did it by studying effectively because mentality is so important.
      And someone who enters with a negative mindset will rately achieve anything. I enjoy working, although i did not as much at first but seeing your results is the greatest motivation so keep the grind going.
      Because im currently in my 20s and investing 10 more years into all my skills id end up a pro by 30 and imagine by 50 by simply keeping my habits, its slow progress but it gets you far overtime.

    One time I packed an order which took me at least 3-4 hours. It was only for 1 order! That was too much for me so yeah the time spent in packaging is so real. That order was for retail, the t-shirts were bulky and I didn't have the right size for the box, and I had to do tagging on the t-shirts too aside from making it look pretty that was why it took so long. Thanks for this video :)

    Churning out great digital products requires a LOT of effort up front, like a physical piece would, but oh my god is it nice to just set it and move on. I've been working on planner templates for a month or so now but once it's perfected i can cut it up and reskin it as many times as I want. Nearly infinite possibilities! Just a lot of beta testing and a/b testing and interactivity before we get there.

    Great video Kelsey!
    Many people are hesitant with the digital products, and l was too. But, I was thinking carefully, before I started just recently selling digital products online. People stealing and big companies too, it can happen to everyone. From what I hear from the artists, when someone copy your work and you ask them to remove it, they will do it.
    I don't know if you agree, but even when someone buys an art print or card, they can scan it, reproduce it and do with it whatever they want; the same as with the digital item.

    • @KelseyRodriguez
      @KelseyRodriguez  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree! I think worrying about theft is natural but if someone's really determined they'll figure out a way regardless, and it just isn't rational to run your business based on fear like that

    i always wanted to have a side job as a psychology student (also kinda the reason for choosing this course because i really love it and the potential jobs opportunities it will give it in the future, and at the same time because it is not really "tension-filled" in comparison to other courses that are really famed in our school because they gotta maintain the high passing rates. (of course psych is also very tiring but in comparison to these courses, it's just very bearable) so having a side job of another thing i also love would be very lovely
