    This is my favourite game in the series. You wouldn't think a game where most your party members are monsters that only say gibberish would have the most emotional story in the series, but here we are. I like to imagine the main characters as Arnie playing Conan the Barbarian. Same backstory and personality probably.

    Ah, it's so awesome that you didn't spoil the story even a little. This game plays with expectations so well, it really has to be experienced first hand!

    Dragon Quest 5 is probably the 1st RPG to make me shed a tear...such emotional scenes and grandiose story was phenomenal in the SNES.

      Same here! I don't want to spoil for anyone who might read, but there's a scene in the last cave of the game that actually got me there 😪 you probably know which one. I didn't expect that at all

    I agree, there are just too few RPGs like Dragon Quest these days. Simple turn based battle system, an intriguing but very funny plot, loveable characters and great music. Every now and then, a good JRPG pops up, but i will never forget the glory days of the SNES-PS1 era. (sitting here patiently for DQ11)

    One of my favorite things about this game is that the plot is never predictable or dull and you can get emotionally invested on everything that happens to the protagonist despite him being just a silent protagonist. It isn't shocking to me that this game is one of the most famous dragon quest games, it was truly ambitious for its time despite lacking in the visuals

    There is something special about dq5 that hadn't been mimiced until dq11, I am talking about the story of course!, The story about family in this game is so good. Pankraz's death, Harry's chest with the letter in it, marrying Bianca, seeing sancho again, the kids birth. There are a lot of emotional moments

  • @dragonpencil4131

    This is my favorite Dragon Quest game U played on the DS compared to the others. They were all good, but the story in this one was very gripping and I replayed it around three times before moving on to the next game. It was my introduction to the world of DQ and I never regret it.

    I remember when I finally played Dragon Quest V translated on an emulator and it was like the happiest I had ever been in years it seemed like. I felt like a kid again playing Dragon Warrrior IV for the first couple times. Such a great game and the story is fantastic, I don't want to go into spoilers either, but omg so many emotions. I played and finished the PS2 remake some years ago and that game is just gorgeous.

    DQ5 is my favorite JRPG and game in general...its a bold statement i know. Sometimes something shinny new comes along that takes its place for awhile (persona series tends to do this) but I aways go back to my DS version...I even re bought it on android.
    Something about the Dragon Quest/Warrior series always makes me instantly feel safe. Its not just nostalgia but its nice to know that in a world where things are constantly changing some things stay the same.

    DQ5 on PS2 is so good. Definitely the ultimate way to play this game. The fan translation is also on par with the SNES version which is nice since I can't stand the DS localization. The real big benefit for me over the SNES version is the 4 person parties. You just feel too limited with your party makeup with only 3.

    I remember first playing it on an emulator over fifteen years ago.
    The graphics are very similar to IV. They kept the Door command from IV, (which was absent in the NES version of III), and before the player automaticallty opened doors when pushing against them starting in VI.)
    Savfe states allowed me to abuse the casino and get great gear in the beginning

    • @Redfoot138
      @Redfoot138 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only DQ games I've played through are IV, V, and XI. It's definitely the best story of the three. If the game mechanics weren't a little dated I could easily see V as my favorite JRPG of all time.
      Trying to decide which one to play next. Leaning towards either the SFC remake of III or VIII. And with VIII, I'm still not sure if I want to play the PS2 version or 3DS.

    • @acidwizard6528
      @acidwizard6528 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Redfoot138 III was really good for it's time, but by today's standards the story is terribly lacking and if the game mechanics of the Super Famicom version of V didn't jive with you, chances are the same will hold true for III. VIII comes highly recommended by many including myself. I only played the PS2 version, but what I know about the differences include; The PS2 version has a fully orchestrated soundtrack which is amazing and adds so much enjoyment to the experience of playing the game. The 3DS version has extra content and a couple new playable characters that were not included in the original game. Some content from the PS2 original was censored when porting to Nintendo's 3DS which kind of aggravates me personally. On the positive side there are quality of life improvements in the 3DS version like you can see monsters in the field so encounters aren't random, and you don't have to go to a church everytime you want to save which sounds very convenient. Also the graphical style is a bit different where the PS2 has cell shaded style, the 3DS doesn't look as crisp.

    • @Redfoot138
      @Redfoot138 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@acidwizard6528 It's not that they didn't jibe-- they're perfectly fine for what they are. Even though the Dragon Quest series is new to me, I've been playing JRPG's for nearly 25 years. However (and speaking as a child of the 80's who loved his NES), I definitely couldn't go back and play the 8-bit versions of DQ and Final Fantasy. Plan on digging up my copies of Final Fantasy Origins on PS1 and FF3 on DS whenever I get around to playing those.
      I don't think I'll mind the DQ3 remake too much. I really love the aesthetics of the RPG's that came out on the SNES in 1994-96. That said, I think I am leaning more towards DQ8. And after recently playing DQ4 on my phone and DQ5 on my 3DS, I think I'm going to play it on my TV. Which leads me to... do I play it on my CRT TV with component or get a PS2 HDMI adapter for my modern TV :)

    • @acidwizard6528
      @acidwizard6528 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Redfoot138 Solid choices man. I too really enjoy the 16 bit look, especially when it comes to JRPGs. Final Fantasy Origins is a more amenable way to experience the first two Final Fantasy games than going back to the 8 bit original. I've only played the PSP version of FF3 and it was ok. Very grindy towards the end. I do enjoy playing on a larger screen, but I'm a certified bad boy and just emulate older consoles with my high powered gaming PC.

    I lost my lifetime massive game collection I spent every cent I got during childhood-age 24/25 as I was born in 1986.
    I loved Sega/SNK/NEC(Hudson) and liked lots else but I have always been drawn toward niche generas/games/hardware etc so I used to trade all my NES-N64 yardsale finds for games/handhelds/consoles etc from the US and JP.
    I was a lover of JRPGs and defended pixil based consoles and games as well as loved JRPGs and JP generas like Visual Novels, Dating Sims, Adventure style like say Root/Letter Vita, Phantasy Star II Adventure Mega Drive, now that I finally own it I can say Dead Zone for Famicom Disk System as well(the 2nd game released in that genra that wasnt yet a genre as it was still at the time (1986) still too new.
    Anyway, I lost all my stuff in 2010 and became homeless as my family discarded it to use my room for other purposes as they refused to store it. I will never 100% get over it, but I have accepted and moved on to my best ability.
    I got back into gaming slowly as while I followed the market online after I finally got on Disability(took 4 ppl helpin me) and a smartphone in 2013(Samsung Galaxy S4(Broke 2-3 years later) as well as a new $2,500 Kemco 50cc(whatever that means) scooter for transportation(got stolen) and I was put in a shithole that most my shit I brought has been tossed either from bug/mouse infestation or stolen(room broken into 3 times, and tons of mail stolen...not anymore thankfully but rent has gone up like $300 in 10 years and now got a new slumlord who jacked up rent once he took ownership.
    Anyway, I have turned my back on the current HD generation of gaming though I have made a few exceptions like with Vita, PS3(only use it on a reg TV 📺) , and im considering especially with all the terrible looking "updated" JRPGs and Shmups anyway as well as Visual Novels and Adventure games though im very picky as I am 100% against DLC, forced updating because games were not correctly tested before released as the BS companies keep using and falling back on the whole "we force(technically...realistically its to save THEM money the dev companies n such use the fact they can basically force update patch downloads on everyone with fixes/corrections so to them it dont matter how sucky the game sucks as they can "fix" it after getting full price for a game that isnt close to complete...not just the literal game itself either...the packaging as well is terrible, forcing digital manuals on everyone is horseshit and another cost-related copout by the big companies and the fact theres not been outrage and instead everyone defending all this anti consumer controlling BS going on...no one is owning anything anymore...but as I dont deal in it I will stop but I had to make my point understanding 😉.
    THAT... is a major reason I have completely abandoned HD(unnecessary to begin with, IMO) and only wish for stuff I loved back. 1 at least of every console and 2 controllers+Everdrive/ODE is mostly all I have decided I need or want.
    So, after getting back into gaming slowly with a PS3 and a PS4, I hated it, and of course, as I have no $$ and can't afford wifi, I could never do anything online on. Including transfer a goddamn save from my vita to PS4 and vice versa...one more asinine current example of the over the top BS going on now in the current industry which is trying to imitate PC distribution as its cheaper but as PC is a different animal entirely and isnt replaced every like 4-6 years this current fiasco no one really but me(and I have 0 connection personally or otherwise but that doesn't make a difference for me and it shouldnt for anyone else) is really speaking up about the hypocrasy and complete self interest of every major company using BS excuses and taking advantage of every gamer/consumer and they are pushing and doing this so they can like all massive companies suck up as much $ as possible as well as exert unnecessary control over the consumer so they can keep the upper hand so when they decide to completely fuck ppl its get fucked or have nothing ever...and also the companies can control how their older catalogs sell and whatnot as well as keep it so unlessnu keep re subbing or rebuuying the game over and over, once a generation is over the games in the near future will become basically unplayable...just like everything connected to PS+plus as like I said, everything obtained through it needs it to validate to run and once its canceled by the gamer person or company...all games obtained through it will become useless. It's very sad.
    That and more is why I love and appreciate and will ALWAYS fight for whats right and stand up against hypocrisy/the taking advantage of others by other "regular" people/gamers and companies big or small.
    I love the 90s, especially but 80s, 90s, and up to/around the first 10 years or so of the year 2000, as I feel that's when gaming was best...PS2 era and prior. People spoke up, companies were all over, and new games regularly released as well as consoles/forms of gaming as the selections were massive(in Japan wayyy moreso than here in the US but Japan was and honestly still is the #1 Paradise for gaming in every form from developer/publishers etc to places connected to gaming and events and so much more variety and selection as well. And in the 90s-mid 00s here in the US anyway, people who liked games aside from when in arcades pretty much people had to IRL hide their love of gaming as we were all called nerds and loosers etc as well as were beat up and given hell (atleast I was).
    Back on topic -
    My new Hyperkin SuperboySFC model I got along with Super Fami controller and china model SD2SNES Pro Everdrive in 2018 broke and battery stopped holding charges I realized in 2020 and this year I FINALLY GOT a real boxed Super Famicom and a Twin Famicom 500-B in great shape fully working but missing 1 plastic half circle foot with 3rd party cables and 1 FDS game(so I could try it) and I got a N8 Pro red clear Famicom model Everdrive(looks perfect in my model Twin Famicom with a red outline cart slot and D pads on the 2 controllers.
    So now I can play my SNES/SFC+Fan-Translation games as well as NES/Fami/FDS+Fan-Translated games and as I never kept NES/SNES stuff back when i had most everything else US released and tons of games especially most US JRPGs+guide books, JP Shmups and JRPGs as well as games from all other generas as well as arcade port/neo geo official+port and eventually official arcade on a official SNk Neo Geo MVS 2 slot stand up wooden US cabinet and a Japanese Imported Egret II sit down white plastic candy cabinet I put a beautiful new 2 player Control panel on and as its a jamma cab a non jamma converter to use stuff like Sega Naomi which isnt Jamma and shmups on PCBs and Naomi carts/discs(many cheaper than DC ports), and many ofcourse MVS/AES/Neo Cd games. I almost got a Jamma genesis as i owned over 300 Genesis carts(majority complete), over 80 Sega CD games(most complete), 45-50+ 32x(Majority complete) so being able to run genesis in a cab was tempting but my life decline began not long after I learned of the Jamma Genesis.
    Now that I have SFC and Fami Twin as well as PCENGINE Briefcase setup (white CD-ROM² unit broke by accident) but I can play hu card games via Turbo Everdrive 2.5 atleast.
    I am also glad I grabbed what Playstation/PS2, especially complete JRPG games and guidebooks I could get, as well as Vita games and PS2 imports/some PSX imports.
    Now that I am into Fami/Super Fami, I wanted some real games so I grabbed some at extreme cost for many though overall for how horrible the market here is as its been taken over by reg ppl aka resellers/flippers/scalpers and now imports are going up with JP people now flipping games from their recycle shops on US sites like FleacEbay, ScAmazon, ScaMercari etc and they like greedy US based people have done and charging 3-5x or more what they paid and not using auctions on auction sites just flat prices as a means/tactic to hold the extreme overpriced market at its current insanity as people who unlike me cant seem to see and or care whats going on despite everyone hurting but people using games for financial gain which's not ok imo.
    So I got now 9 FDS games on 7 working disks(only like 1 or maybe 2, actually "complete"), 13 total Famicom games(2 loose(1 w/ manual)/11 in boxes or hard cases(9 with atleast manual, and a double of DDS: Megami Tensei 1+2 but no manual for one each of DDS: MT & DDS: MT II), and 8 loose SFC games and 19 boxed (with atleast manual) with DQVI as a double and my cart only DQV is also.
    This message took a U-turn so im ending this...more meaningful response on the way.

    But anyway, I also love DQV(my commitment should show that). Interesting method... how does a gameshark or converter allow for use of eng patches with an original JP cart?
    Anyway, just wanted to mention my love of Fan-Translations, 80s-90s especially 2D-2.5D games especially JRPG'S and Arcade ports...Shmups/Beat em' ups/some Racing/Densha De Go! and many others.
    I hope to get more boxed SFC and Fami/Fami Disk games as well as once its fixed... PCE CD as well.
    I want to add many dont and ive yet to beat it but I really also like Dragon Quest VII PSX(ps1)...I really like the mix of 32 bit rotational 2.5D and 2D as well as sprites in that game. And its the only officially released DQ game I like the translation of as well personally as no localization.

    Hi Derek, just food for thought but I'm a big fan of JRPG's but will never have the time to play. I'd love a series new series from you where you go in-dept on the full story of each RPG. I think creating another channel or a second SPOILER video going over the story might be a good idea since you're already playing the full game. Just food for thought though. I know how much it take just to create one video. Thanks for the content!
