I imagine some of the higher end tsubas didn't survive, ones made with precious metals incorporated. Was thinking that a lot of the iron tsuba designs probably got lost to history because they didn't make it past WW2, the war effort probably required a lot of materials.
Skyjiro says the tsuba on the Hota Tegai is white bronze. When I received it from Australia, it was green. After removing the corrosion, it looks like brass.

Interesting topic. I've seen a number made of copper, which is weaker than brass, but the thickness would make up for that no problem. No issue. About the iron, I think the modern reproductions are mild steel because it's readily available, cheap and easily machinable. 99% iron at the end of the day, nothing wrong with it. Surely some historic tsuba were true iron, tho I don't think it makes much a difference vs copper or anything else. Like you said, Samurai were often poor and cost of materials surely made a difference for options. In modern reproduction, alloy can mean cheap zinc alloy, which would definitely fail under impact. If you are familiar with kendo, it is considered traditional to strike the wrist, hand or forearm. For a quick strike to that area, a tsuba def saved a lot of hands from being cut.
Question: If those antique tsuba were replaced by you, was there a thickness difference between the one you replaced? If yes, did you have problems with mekugi alignment?
I’ve remounted with varying sizes of tsuba before and yes the mekugi alignment was off. You will either want to add or remove a seppa. And may need to remove some material from one or all of the seppa to get a perfect fit. Hope that helps
Thanks for the video. I had wondered what the significance of those holes was - I use it as a "safety" of sorts. I pass the sageo through and bring it back down for a loop or two - this works (for me) as an extra precaution from the sword sliding out during transit.. And, for a creature preparing to pounce, THAT has to be THE most convincing effort of a cat "pretending" to be asleep, as I've ever seen.. ..Beware the deception of that cunning creature.. Are there any preferences you and your family have, on Tsuba choices - material or design styles? Really liked your wife's "joker-themed, nekked lady" sword.. Her choice, or your gift..? I did order some "extra" Tsuba from Amazon, but I think I might have paid too much.. None of them were round ones, and I can't tell if they are iron - not that it would've changed my mind. I'm not too concerned about "blocking an opponent that would cleave me in twain.." Informative and entertaining as always, thanks.
The "extra" tsuba I ordered took 14 days to arrive. They were all zinc alloy and I don't think they were worth the ten bucks apiece I paid for them. All of them were different designs - bigger, smaller, simple and ornate. Ornate designs had lots of flashing left inside the relieved areas, so if you aren't looking for extra work, I would pass on the Amazon "deals.."

In ww2 they did us up a lot of resources, so it's a good possibility. Or some have been lost in time unfortunately.

Bronze does when polished out,it has a kinda orange color to it

I'm familiar with kendo,in tenshinryu we also strike those areas as well.

The thickness varied, with the antique. So it probably wouldn't change that much.
