The goal of this video was simply to make the best free handstand guide there is on the internet, what do you think? Did I miss much? Make sure you check out the full blog post too if you prefer to skim through it. Happy handstanding!
A nice summary of your past content, and as you said at the end, perfect time since we're stuck inside. I've been practicing handstands for a couple weeks now, this video is timely. I also bought rings on Amazon when my gym closed down, there's a convenient tree outside my apartment to hook them onto. If you're looking for video ideas, a beginner rings summary video would be cool too. I'm basically doing dip negatives and chin-ups so far (I was up to 8 dips at the gym, going back to dip negatives on the rings feels bad). Also false grip is unbelievably hard, I can't hold it at all.
I am actually training handstands during quarentine so this video came on a perfect timing! I love the 5 steps! I am currently in between the 3 and 4 and seeing them presented that way really helped me understand where I stand and what I need to work on :) i am also training to do my splits through your videos! I love this channel tks so much for the great content
Tom Merrick hey tom! Thank you for the content! I have been meaning to start a handstand journey for a long time! However, my left wrist has pain whenever I try! Do you think I should just train the flexibility or strengthen it?
The level of detail here is amazing! You answered a bunch of questions I didn't even realise I had. Especially around the application of it all. I had no idea what training would be best to focus on as a noob, nor for how long or how regularly I should do it. Invaluable content, thank you!
I'm working on hs for a couple of weeks now and watched a lot of videos for this and also did some classes. This video is really good and sums up everything i figured out the past few weeks...kind of sad that i found it just now ;) Good job!
I've been progressing with handstand training for about 5 weeks now, I would say I'm at the entry level where I need to focus on that, kicking up into balance. I've been watching these videos for some time and these definitely help tons. 👍
Any progress? 3 months in and even with my wife spotting me like 20 minutes a day, still can't figure it out. This shit is super hard to learn, but I was never an athletic person (more of a lanky gamer).
Yay! A new video - thanks to quarantine I have been applying your videos and others like it trying to understand how to workout without hurting myself. Your videos are great! Thank you so much for sharing your synthesized knowledge and making informative and comprehensive videos for anyone willing to learn. It's a much needed education. Plus you're so much fun to watch. Healthful quarantine!
17:00 this part motivates me to keep trying. Knowing that it will take a long time and that I just have to stick through the dip. I'm already approximately two months in.
Thank you so much for your explicit and Amazing sharing and guidance. You're truly a mighty warrior!! Greater heights and success ahead along the Journey.. Keep rocking!!
Damn, I struggle with step #2😔 Thank you so much Tom for putting all of this together🙏🏼💛. I will revisit the videos you posted, and keep at it. Thank you once again! Stay safe.
i remember my first and last hand stand session was doing chest to wall, went a bit too close to the wall, fell backwards and slammed my back straight into the ground... since then i have avoided anything upside down but maybe this week ill give it another go
Awesome vids, man, I'm trying to get to my first handstand myself and I'd probably be doing your follow along beginner video! Crossing my fingers to be able to do it soon :D stay awesome
My main issue is confidence, like you said it. I once just tried handstand for fun and managed to hold for 3-5secs. But Im still scared of falling off...
I started drilling 2.5 years ago 5-6 days a week 45-90 mins after 60-75 mins yoga, I took lessons, made major adjustments practically lost all my progress but somehow kept at it. I restarted my Aerial hoop training August 2020 when NYC studio reopened and It was the cross training and development of pull strength that recently helped me find the body awareness for consistent entry control and sustained 5-15 sec balance. It easier to train and run the Marathon and still a WIP...
Thanks soooo much, I’m about to begin this gurney. I started last year, well one privet lesson and lots of practice, i got a shoulder injury and stopped. I think between jujitsu and weight lifting my shoulders are tight. The reason for is so I get more mobility in my shoulders as not to get pined so easily in jujitsu class. Anyway, thanks a bunch - I’ve been wanting to do hand stands for as long as I can remember.
I think Tom Merick has a video for everything! Loved the video man going to be learning a handstand on my learning series on my channel! Learning non stop whilst in quarantine!
Hi Tom, Love you work, always insightful and intelligent. I’m a martial arts instructor based in the Sydney Aus and have always struggled to maintain my flexibility despite over 30 years of practise. I put a lot of this down to the majority of the martial arts industry having little or no understanding of anatomy and just doing what they were taught. I’m good friends with the guys at Manly Warringah Gymnastics like Lachlan Walker who have helped me implement stretching methods like PNF and other mobility exercises which have greatly benefited both me and my students, however I am finding sustained gains hard to maintain whilst constantly having to teach and demonstrate. I teach an average of 3 times a day 5 days a week and am required to demonstrate and conduct a stretch in each session, and was wondering if this demand could be responsible for my fatigue and lack of progression, and if so is there a stretching method which you feel will enable me to continue working, maintain or increase performance. Deepest regards and stay safe. Jason
Hey Tom, I’ve just started doing the daily Emmet Louis pancake routine you featured on your channel a while back. I want to also do your middle split routine, what’s your advice on training both at the same time?
Were you writing: “You suck, get goo-“ at the end? 😂🤣😂. You are amazing! Don’t talk about yourself like that. Your videos are helping me through the handstand process- and you’ve done all this FOR FREE! Seriously, can’t thank you enough! Keep up the good work. (You are good. You’re handstands are #handstandgoals)
Hey tom, could you do a pistol squat tutorial? think it would be a great leg workout for those in lockdown rn, I have so much trouble keeping my leg straight haha great vid as always 👌
im 26 and ive been wanting to do a handstand atleast for two years now. Looking at this video i think its going to take a long while before I even develop some confidence to attempt this lol
Love the content man, I enjoy all the videos! I've been looking for a good lotus routine, but I can't seem to find anything as good as the other videos you have with regards to the splits. Would you mind doing a lotus tutorial?
Tom, do you have any thoughts on using forearm supports during handstand practice? Basically instead of using your entire body against a wall you instead place only your forearms against a sofa or stack of mats and then attempt to balance your handstand?
I would say it’s a drill that makes you feel good about progress but not necessarily the best to make it. You need to spend time understanding how to balance with the hands. Similar to people doing the puppy press vs actual press drills
Charlie it’s straight arm strength. It’s not a hard position to hold providing the knees are locked in place. Less about strength and more just the right position
Hey my biggest problem with handstand is that I can't kick up. I have adequate shoulder strength and mobility and wrist mobility. I can hold a chest to wall handstand for 30 seconds. But I can't kick up to a back to wall handstand. I'm kinda scared to do that. When I kick up I usually don't get to a handstand or when I kick up really hard I just hit the wall and bounce right back. Any help? Thanks.
If bouncing you're probably too close to the wall. Place elbows on the floor so fingertips touch the wall. That or slightly further is the distance you need to kick from. You'll land in a banana HS but that's ok if you want to overcome fear. Reduce the distance over time. It is also hard to say if you kick up properly without video. General tips are: push with feet, stack your shoulders immediately over wrists (they need to be further in front than you think), the first leg in the air completely straight, aim to stretch upwards, straighten the other leg. If done correctly you'll hit the wall with toes only. No butt or shoulder ramming.
5:08 - I think I'm doing the crow stand incorrectly, my knees keep scraping the back of my forearms when I try to balance. It hurts like hell. Any ideas?
Same. I think that's normal. My knees dig into my arms and it limits my time. Whenever I do crow I wear sweatpants and it makes it a lot easier than just skin to skin
What are the different merits of back to wall or chest to wall? I can do both, but can’t freestand either way for very long Feel like I should focus on one or the other to improve my freestanding time but don’t know which one to choose 🤔 My ultimate goal to be able to do a press stand 😅
Practice bailouts and if you find it scary practicing in the park or your back yard as the grass will give you a softer landing if you fail. I personally stuck on this very part because I just have fear of failing but we will all get there.
My left arm doesn't straighten fully because I broke my elbow years ago. My handstand is coming along but is there anything I can do to help my balance to compensate for my arm? Thanks!
I weigh 100kg. I can do a wall plank for about a minute without any pain but it starting to get pretty intense after it. Do you think I'm too heavy for a handstand or is it just a matter of time?
Where did you receive your training from?? It seems very similar to what Ive been taught by a few trainers! I think I am going to work on my own road to a OAHS and film the journey 😊
I have a slightly curved spine (kyphosis) and therefore struggle with flexibility of where I can get my arms above my head. Will I still be able to do this?
yeah i am trying but i can't right now because i just smashed my leg on my bed frame so yeah that is why i have a fear over going over in a handstand . . . . . .

The transition at 5:33 from arm bend to straight arm. Really difficult, its a big step. Straight arm is whole new level.
I literally started learning handstand today...tom coming in clutch
