    Worth a try? I think so. These two combos are really just for a quick and dirty rotator cuff capacity finisher to a session. They go through a nice variety of positions including lateral raises, face pulls and trap 3 raise to target the rotator cuff, traps and rhomoids.

    Starting from zero- it took me 7 months to land a 5 second handstand. After that I quit practicing and lost it. It then took me another 7 months to re-learn & start nailing regularly. I now make sure to do at least 1 handstand a day. I practice both on & off the wall. This is my most sacred move. I love it so much!

    I’ve been at it now for about eighteen months. It’s been a slow process of building enough strength and flexibility. At 62 years and 6’4”, strength building has been slow, needing more recovery between sessions and dealing with injuries along the way. Half of the time I wasn’t training consistently. When I implemented daily handstand sessions, progress began to build, with long periods at a level, followed by “lightbulb” moments that opened another key. The biggest break was when I moved from my “gym” to other walls and different surfaces like grass. I’m getting close to 10 secs now, and gaining experience with correcting balance. Throughout the journey, I have gained tips and nuggets of learning from a range of TH-cam “coaches”, your videos and advice have been some of the most valuable and relatable and been key to getting this far. Thanks so much for all the effort you put in to share.

    It took me about 3 months to achieve consistent 10 sec + handstands. Like a lot of people, my progress came when I started doing shorter, more frequent training sessions. If you're looking for ideas for future training vids Tom, a series of vids showing a progression from a straight handstand to more advanced moves like press to handstand would be great. Most vids are either aimed at beginners or much more advanced moves.

    Very nice video! For me it was 3 years from trying it the first time with a wall to 20-30s handstands without a wall. I have not been consistent with trainings however, I did not believe I could ever really learn it at all;) But short everyday hs sessions made me make the best progress.

    My journey: while I was losing weight I started on Dec2019 with zero fitness experience. By Mar2020 I finally tried freestanding and hit 10s, and in a bad overbalance fall I hurt one wrist. I didn't stop and by Jun2020 I hit almost 20s but inconsistently. One year later on Jun2021 I was already around the 1min mark. Today I'm consistently at around 70s and starting to feel the beginnings of a mental and strength change towards the one arm. Remember: I was 20kg overweight, never done huge fitness feats in the past, and I am now 41. Great skill! Thanks for your great videos Tom.

    Very informative video Tom! I have been wanting to learn the handstand for years, never did anything specific and therefore never manage to get it.
    Started seriously at the beginning of 2021, reached a few free-standing holds past 30s, but still working close to the wall (both chest and back) to improve the basics. Hardest part is still the kick-up, but with enough patience I am sure I will get there. Can definitely relate with the progress chart, after the hell of the first few months with 1-2 sec max holds and tons of frustration, progress seems to come faster, longer holds are more frequent (and rewarding). Bad days still happens, but that is the handstand.
    Being 37, with a full time job and 2 small daughters (2.5 year old and 4 months) squeezing in 3 sessions a week from 4 AM to make it happen! Cheers from Tokyo.

    I did my first handstand against a wall 4 months ago and been doing it 5-6 days a week since.
    I weigh 90 kg, and it’s been a grind of training my shoulder strength and flexibility from holding a few seconds to now over a minute against the wall.
    I feel like my biggest challenge is inflexible shoulders and lack of strength.
    I’m also not sure whether I’m overtraining. No pain, but felling pretty sore every day, and a few times I’ve had to take 2-3 days break to not feel weaker for my next session.
    Also been doing yoga, pull ups, bridges, leg lifts, push-ups and assisted pistol squats for 6 months after years of inactivity.
    Maybe my body is still adjusting to my somewhat drastic change in lifestyle?
    Quit smoking and junk food in 2020 and lost 15kg of fat. 2021 I started getting interested in yoga and callisthenics! Thank so much for the great content and inspiration!

    When I started seeing progress in my handstand I was doing them every day and after a while had to take around 3 week break because my wrist hurt whenever I put weight on them.
    Take it Slow ppl, always have a day of break in between and make sure you warm Up before practising, especially wrist. Also there are Blocks that give you a better wrist angle or paraletts so you can pracite more without overusing your joints as much.

    Nice video. I practice 5 sets of 1 min Chest to Wall HS at home and do 10 to 15 minutes of kicking up into the HS attempt when I am at the gym. I actually held the HS for like 4 to 5s for the first time last week. I can consciously feel like I am getting a bit more control but it's very gradual. Not bothered how long it takes cos it doesn't really matter.

    I started training handstand in July and I'm starting to consistently get 10-15 second holds. Still like to be near-ish to the wall in case I fall, so I still need to learn how to bail, but my form and confidence have come a long way. Building up wrist strength was the biggest thing for me. I have little toothpick wrists. I'm a 58 year old woman, so if I can do it, YOU can do it! I love being upside down. I'm hoping to keep going and eventually be able to do OAH and HSPU. My goal is to have a solid 20 second hold by Christmas.

    Hello tom, is exactly 2yrs i have now benn doing hs! And to be honest, i can only hold 10-15secs and is not consistent is more intermittent for 10 to 15secs! Is soooooo f**king tedious! However saying this, i now dont see hs as a end all.. is part of my hs strength routine, now i do it 3-4 dsys a week for 20-30mins at a time, before i used to do it 5 days a week with 30- 45mins!! And get very frustrated!! Hs is only what you make of it, i do love it, once i can archived it, my next goal will be press to hs, but i wont take it too seriously and make it fun! 👍🤗

    Been in my HS journey for around 10 months now, been practicing 4-6 times per week. Switched to Parallettes some weeks ago, since I had issues with my wrist from Push-training/HS-work. Had been slightly frustrated about my progress, but within the last few sessions, I seem to have made big steps. Got my first 10s~ hold the other day which I am really happy about. Biggest struggle still is kicking up and hitting the right spot. Been experimenting on different positions (straddle, tuck, ..) and just enjoying it. Will definitely keep practicing, no real goal apart from press though.
    Working on press, but that will still take quite some time, I believe. Flexibility/strength requirements seem pretty tough to me
    Really love your content, keep it up!

    • @John.McIntyre
      @John.McIntyre 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I dont think the headstand would have the most carry over other than some lower body awarness, frog stand isn't bad, but I think the fastest progress would be from building capacity with straight arms overhead. So whether that's wall holds, elevated pike holds, etc, that specificity is probably going to get you ready for the handstand the quickest.

    Great video. I am struggling with body line off the wall. I can get fairly open shoulders chest to wall but free standing I tend to revert to the habit of more of a “planched” handstand. Have you got any tips to correct this? Thanks

    • @John.McIntyre
      @John.McIntyre 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had this problem a lot as well. Are you doing Toe pulls or Heel pulls at all in your practice? This should let you get into good form before lifting off so there is less likelihood of planching. Also make sure you're filming or having some way to check your form during your sessions so you can hold yourself accountable. Lastly, just pushing and opening your shoulder way more than you think is really helpful, you can always have more mobility and strength in that end range of motion so keep trying to progress that.

    • @jimmahgee
      @jimmahgee 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Whatever you can manage without frying your central nervous system, wrists, shoulders, and whatever else in terms of muscle imbalances etc. Remember once a week is better than none a week. Maybe you can manage two a week and see how you feel. You might benefit from more volume and less intensity as your joints are new to it. Then you could focus on less volume and increase the intensity, to build strength. Either way, just warm up and take the rest you need between sessions, however long is right for you! There’s no rush and so long as you are seeing small improvements over time then you are on the right track.

    • @BodyweightWarrior
      @BodyweightWarrior  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      handstands shouldn't be "intense". If it feels intense, treat it like strength training and build up capacity 1-2x per week until they feel more casual. The focus should then be on balancing :)

    My primary question is WHY ? Not to sound negative, or anti millennial or anti social media fitness fads by asking this question, but WHY ? Why do I need to or why should I want to train and practice to do a handstand ? Is this a required or important move to do in order to achieve good health and fitness ? Aren't there other easier, safer, and more realistically sustainable exercises that can be done to train the same muscles and achieve the same goal ? Is this an example of doing a handstand for the sake of doing a handstand, or is there a viable important reason to do this ? (Despite TH-cam and social media telling me I should do a handstand ). Tell me why it's so important to learn to do a handstand ?

      You don't but that's not exactly the point of the video. You don't need to train handstand but it's a fun addition to a physical practice and develop great shoulder stability. You're not missing out if you don't, just do what makes you excited to train :)

    I’m a 67 year old female and can’t do a headstand anymore. I use to do it by dragging my legs straight towards my head then lifting my legs straight up. I could only do a handstand against a wall. Can I get strong enough now to do a handstand?

      You can definitely get stronger!

      maybe try straddle to headstand - rather than pike to headstand?

    Why everyone who does 1 arm handstands ruined their elbows? There elbow bends past straight & hyper mobile? Eventually ur gonna need surgery to correct it.

    6 MONTHS you say???? I m so sick of this shit, I ve been strugling with this for like 3 years, and all I can manage to do so far is, from time to time, hold the balance for a few seconds, when I catch it. There just is NO WAY that I can keep that balance for 10 secs consistently, no matter how much I try. After a short while I end up falling either back or forward. But, why, WHY??? The first part was the quickest for me to achieve. Standing on the hands is no problem. It's catching and holding the balance consistently that seems impossible!!!

      I am in the same place as you after four years. But I continue to improve so maybe I will hit the steep part of the learning curve soon?

    How long are you going to do this nonsense?

    would recommend not doing too much too soon. My experience was doing it everyday to begin with, ended up with a damaged nerve in my left hand. Had to quit doing it on the ground, and start doing parallets instead. Been going now for 1 year and worked up to 50 sec handstand and slowly working in the palm handstand from time to time.
