    I'm from Rome and one day I gave a ride to some Americans visitors (a friend of mine told me to take them to the hotel, in front of the Vatican walls) they gave me a gift, a ticket for Vatican museum. I realized that I was the only Italian there, being visitors 90% foreigners. The sistine chapel was very crowded. A good experience. By the way a rule I remember, a guard at the entrance of the basilica told some Anglo speakers "no shorts for men". Often I realize that for tourists Saint Peter cathedral is like Disneyland and not a holy place.

    Hello! After climbing the Dome of St Peter's, do you exit into the Basilica? Or do you have to line up again?
    Thanks for the great videos!! super useful

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To climb the dome, you have to enter the area where Saint Peter's Basilica is. So you must go through security first. Once you do that, you may have a second line to wait in to climb the dome.
      Once you come back down from the dome, you will find yourself right about where you came in and from there you can walk straight into Saint Peter's basilica without waiting in any more lines. The main line is the line for security and that's it!

    I have visited the Vatican Museum three times (about 20 hours inside). I expect I will visit it a dozen more, if I live long enough. It would take a lifetime to see all of the history and art in Rome, but the Vatican Museum is special. I recommend visiting St. Peter's at a different time than the Vat Museum. I am suffering from Stendhal syndrome when I leave the Museum anyway and can't seem to absorb any more art or sensation. The Capitoline Museum is next in importance in Rome, I think. But, the Galleria Borghese is the biggest punch for your walking time in Italy. There are four Bernini sculptures here that complete your final class in Italian Art. One then must graduate to the Borgello in Florence. Only then can one achieve the Uffizi without literally passing out. Italy is the treasure trove of civilization.

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for your comments. I absolutely agree with you that the best way to visit the Vatican is by splitting up the visit over at least 2 days. The museum does indeed take over one's senses, and so does the Basilica, so they merit their own visits. I also love the Capitoline museums and the Galleria Borghese but also Palazzo Massimo, Palazzo Altemps, Doria Pamphilj, and many more. As the Romans say, a lifetime is not enough!
      I hope you can come back to visit us here in Italy again very soon! Thank you again for watching and for your comments.

    Hi Elyssa, thank you for the useful tips! I heard that backpack are not allowed to take into Colosseum. May I know your suggestion of what size the bag we should carry to those tourist spots esp. we are taking umbrella, water, sunblock all handful of stuffs? Also, I'm going to Rome in Mid August, in case i want to engage some evening concert, how will you suggest the traffic back to hotel? Is it safe if my show ends by around 10pm?

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi and thanks for watching! Correct, you are not allowed to bring LARGE backpacks into the Colosseum or Vatican. A regular backpack, like the kind college students use, is fine. They are referring to over-sized backpacks like the kind for camping. You can bring in normal things like the items you mention. If your backpack is over-sized, you may simply be asked to check it at the Vatican, but at the Colosseum, there is no place to check bags.
      I don't know where you are staying or where you want to go to a concert but in general, Rome is a pretty safe city for tourists. I personally take taxis but there may not be a taxi stand near your concert. You can take public transportation if you prefer. It depends on where you are and where you are going.

      You can do several things:
      Skip the museums and just visit the basilica on Sunday.
      Go through a ticket vendor like Tiqets or Ticketbar and buy tickets that way.
      Book a tour.
      If you don’t visit the Vatican museums I suggest the capitoline museums. Enjoy!

      @Romewise  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, Tiqets is a trusted reseller. They simply resell the same tickets you would have bought directly if there had been any left. It costs a bit more but it's secure.
      There is almost always a line/crowd at the Vatican. But if you buy these tickets, you will skip the biggest line and mostly just have to go through security.

      Hello Petros and thank you for watching my video. I am not sure what you are asking. Saint Peter's Basilica closes at 7pm in the summer and at 6:30pm in the winter. There is no ticket to get in. It's free.
      The Vatican Museums, on the other hand, open at 9am and close at 6pm, Monday - Saturday. They are closed Sunday unless it's the last Sunday of the month when it's free. Then it's open 9am - 2:30pm.

    Hi Elyssa
    Would you say that visiting the Basilica on a Sunday morning at 8am is less busy than visiting during the week before 8am ?
    I’m thinking early morning Basilica and on another day doing a 4.30pm Vatican tour. I can’t seem to find the extra time tour you mentioned in another video that means you enter the Sistine chapel as everyone is leaving giving the guide time to discuss the Sistine Chapel almost empty or should we just go as late as possible ?

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Actually this is one of my secret tips! On Sundays when the Pope is in town, he gives the Angelus in Saint Peter's Square. And on that day, the security moves to the outer colonnade to check everyone bel are in the square, you can just go right in to the basilica.
      My second secret tip is that if you go inside the basilica at noon when the Pope gives the Angelus, you will be almost alone in there for those 15 minutes, as most people will be outside in the square.
      So yes, this is a great plan! Have a wonderful trip!

      It's like going through airport security. You'll have to put your bag and coat through a scanner. Over-sized backpacks (like for camping) are not allowed, but normal-sized bags are. You could have a laptop if you want to carry it with you, but there is also a coat-check.

      Hi John and thanks for watching. Assuming we are not talking about crowds (there won't be any this March, but there probably will be in March 2022, we hope!), I still suggest going as early as you can. I have a video coming to the channel soon about this. The Vatican and other holy sites have a requirement for covered knees and covered shoulders. This being said, I have often seen men in bermuda-length shorts but there is no guarantee a given Vatican guard will let you in. I would suggest hiking pants with removable legs. They have a zipper and you just take the legs off and can walk around in shorts and then put the legs back on for visiting the Vatican.

      Basically all tickets you purchase in advance are "skip-the-line." Bear in mind that everyone must go through a line for security.

      Hope that helps!

    Thanks for the update. I've been chasing the door/tour scenario for 2 months and concluded that it was a no tour-no door situation. It makes my blood boil a bit to see tour vendors tout St Peter's easy entry tours.

      Yes that's correct, now the ONLY way to get the shortcut is with a tour guide.

    Do you know if you can take pics? As of very recently?

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are allowed to take photos and video (no tripods allowed) in most of Saint Peter's Basilica (with some exceptions, such as in the grottoes and where the Eucharist is kept).
      The same is true for the Vatican Museums with one major exception - the Sistine Chapel. You are not allowed to take photos there.
      However, you may notice that on my channel I have some videos that include the Sistine Chapel. I also have pages on my website with photos I took inside the Sistine Chapel.
      So the longer answer is that if you are inside the Sistine Chapel for a special event or moment, such as I was when i took mine, you MAY be allowed to take photos and video.
      My opinion is that it is not about copyright or flash or the chapel being a sacred space, but rather about crowd control.
      The bottom line is that in most cases, they will not allow you to take photos inside the Sistine Chapel. If you take one of the special off-hour tours as I have shown on this channel, you MIGHT be allowed, but that is up to the guide and the guards. I know this is a long answer. I hope it helps!

    I know tripod is not allowed inside the basilica, vatican museum, and colloseum but if I have my tripod for my cellphone on my backpack. Are there storage lockers before or after the security line to leave my tripod? Thanks.

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes there is free storage at both the basilica and Vatican museums where you can keep your tripod until after your visit.

      @@Romewise One more question, I purchased the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel tickets from their official site. I have the qr code from the confirmation email. Do I just go upfront to the guard and show my qr code to go to the security line and pickup my paper tickets? I saw videos of the queu around the entire building. I was wondering if that line is for purchasing tickets.

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MuffieMuff When you arrive at the entrance, look for the line for people who HAVE tickets. That will be a much shorter line than the one you see wrapping around the museum walls. Then you may have to wait in a short line to go through security but once past security, you just have to go to the window to change your qr code into a printed ticket. It's very easy, I promise!

      It is free to visit Saint Peter's basilica (the church) but the Vatican Museums, like most museums, do charge an entry fee. Although they also offer one free Sunday each month.
