    People who say this rule is dumb have obviously never played/watched the game or are just dense. This rule is fundamental in football. What fun would it be if some prick stood behind the defense, received a lobbed pass and scored every time? That reduces the whole concept of the game to schoolyard passing. Some may say "well... that's the defenders' job, to not allow that, no?". No! Just think about it. First at all, that isn't as easy as it sounds, especially if the attacker is fast, and strikers usually are. If the attacker receives the pass there isn't much a defender can do. Just stopping him by force will result in a free kick for the opposing side, or even a penalty if it's in the box. Not to mention a red card for the defender. Cause yes, Americans, you'll receive a red card directly if you are the last defender. Second of all, you may say that you can just put a defender near the attacker at all time and hope he stops it without a fault. That doesn't work. If you do that, the other team just backs it up with another attacker, your team with another defender and so on. So basically you'll wind up with a bunch of players in a cluster near each goal. You can't call it football anymore, can you? This rule is not stupid. Those who say this talk out of their ass. It's the basis of this sport.

    Watching the 2014 FIFA games, once again I am amazed at the phony acting the players do every time they hit the ground. Imaginary trips, body contact, shoves, etc brings on writhing on the ground with grimaces and exclamations of pain and suffering. Fake, Fake, Fake ! There should be a rule against such antics. Delay of Game, Bad Acting - call it what you will. But lets put an end to such behaviour.

    • @remfuck
      @remfuck 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      are you a moron or what? they do that because football is a clean sport and any infraction could represent a sending off to the opposite team which would be a massive advantage almost winning the game, so they exaggerate trying to sell the fouls to the reffs so that a yellow or red card are more likely for the opposite teams, every advantage you can have on your opposition is precious in football.

  • @bogdanescu86
    @bogdanescu86 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    one thing that escapes most people, even older fans of the sport, is that because 99.99999% of the time the goalkeeper is in goal they only look for the last defending outfield player to see if a player is offside. but it sometimes happens, very rarely, that the goalie is not one of the two furthest back, so then of course the attacker would need to have two defenders between him and the goal line.
    this happens so rarely that some longtime fans have not seen this situation in a match, and when it finally happened they were confused as to why it was called offside when the attacker had a defender between him and the goal line. it's because he needs two, but 99.99999% of the time one of those is the goalie.

    +CoachLeeMartin One slight error in your explanation, there needs to be 2 opponents between the attacker and goal, including the goalkeeper. so if the goalkeeper were to go off their line to make a clearance and the ball was then played back in there would need to be 2 defenders between the attacker and goal.

    Good explanation for youth soccer players. Although there are a couple technical issues (you say last defender) but IMO that is good enough for youth soccer players to understand the rule. Only mistake is that you say that the remedy is a "direct" free kick, but that is wrong. It is an "indirect" free kick.

    In that case, both players would be in an offside position. Either the ball or one of the opposing players MUST be between your team's players and the goal. In the scenario you propose neither player could receive the ball (or be involved in a play) without being in an offside position. Hope that helps.

    I'm very new at this so thanks for making this pretty clear. one question. If the offensive player is in the "offside position" and another player kicks the ball to him - when is offside called? When the ball is kicked or when he receives it?

    • @24magiccarrot
      @24magiccarrot 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jack Sprat as long as the offensive player is interfering with play the offside will be called, so quite often the flag will be raised before the offensive player touches the ball.
      The player would still be offside even if the pass was intercepted by the defender or deflected in such a manner that would result in the offside player being unable to get the ball.
      So by merely being the intended target of a pass would make a player offside and the flag would go up. The not interfering with play only really refers to players who might be at the other side of the pitch and it was clear weren't the intended receiver of the pass, but such player would then need to go back in to an onside position before they could be active in any further action in the play.

    How's this for an easier explanation-
    If while in an offside position, and your teammate last touches/kicks the ball, you are basically not allowed to become active or interfere with play. ...That's basically it.
    Just think of yourself as temporarily barred from participating in the game during this time (when teammate touches/passes the ball while you are in OS position).
    Once you get back to an onside position, and this "offside status" is reset, you are good to play again.

    • @HLeeMartin3
      @HLeeMartin3 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I'm understanding your question correctly, no. Offside would not be called in that instance. However, if the shooter's teammate was in any way involved in the play it would be called. "Involved" might mean blocking the goalkeeper's view of the ball or perhaps reaching to make a play on the ball that might cause the goalkeeper to adjust in some way. This "involvement" would result in an offside being called. But if the shooter's teammate is in the offside position, but has no impact or bearing on the play the offside is not called.
