    Football's most controversial rule has been updated countless times throuought history, and will likely be changing once again in the near future. In this video, we explain in detail everything you need to know about the rule, along with any exceptions for when the offside rule is not in play.
    With the advent of VAR, finer margins mean a need for finer more specific rules, and the offside rule is definitely no exception. The Club World Cup will feature the first use of Automatic Offside calls thanks to sophisticated AR technology, with hopes of it being fully implemented in time for the World Cup in Qatar in December. However, other changes to the rule are being trialled in various leagues, with Arsene Wengers updated rule book gaining some traction and popularity.
    This video will help both beginners and experts better understand the rule and come to grips with all the ins and outs of the game.

    In my opinion offside should only refer to the position of your feet. That you must have 2 feet inside the line drawn across from the second to last defenders furthest foot position. This would allow the attacker to lean in or more momentum. Also as a midfielder it's easier to see the offside line with the added context of the ground instead of a 3 dimensional space in mid air.

    • @JustTheHighlights
      @JustTheHighlights ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Totally agree. An attacker standing in line with a defender can be offside without even realising because they're leaning slightly towards the goal which is ridiculous and not in the spirit of the rule.

    Wenger’s suggested rule would give the attackers *WAY* too much of an advantage on defenders.
    The main complaint with the offside rule is how it’s unforced. VAR helps get more instances correct, but it’s still not perfect. Human error still effects calls when it’s very close, it’s unclear when the ball is played and some leagues with VAR don’t have the adequate camera angles to make confident calls. If the robo-VAR can do it even better, fine. It’s worth a shot, though I wouldn’t like to find out about it’s faults during the World Cup.

      @FootballMeta  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I agree, I think Wenger's rule is a bit too much of a disadvantage towards defenders. I think maybe just clearing up where the line is drawn would help, like maybe just using a players foot as the line.. given that this is a lot easier to tell

    I coach in the US in AYSO and it's super frustrating when our team makes a spectacular 3rd man run only to be called offsides, when our kids know how to play off the audible thump of the pass before running in. Some volunteer refs don't even fully understand the rules.

    What a legend, asked if he could do a video on the offside rule 6 days ago and here it is today. Thanks mate appreciate it 👊. If 2 players are up field 1st is in an offside position the other on side, the one that is on side received the ball and moves up passed the offside player but then passes backwards to the player that was already offside but not in active play at first pass when second player received ball would he be called offside by linesman or not. Hope this makes sense. Top video as always, please keep them coming! Maybe one day you could do a video on the best method for defending corners.👍

    5:55 I would say instead of the whole body being offside, there should be some type of margin of error. Like if the attacker is ahead of the defender by like 3 inches, (about the length of the digital red and blue lines they show to deem offside) then the play should continue. Just a personal opinion.

  • @mattbrown4269

    An outfield defender’s arm/hand can’t play an attacker onside (the rule is not clear on that, but fine). What about the hand/arm of a goalkeeper who is ahead of the last outfield defender? The keeper can play the ball with his hand, so can his fingertip play an attacker onside?

  • @Pentabacklift

    Let say the Striker is in the offside position. The Midfield pass it to the Winger (winger who’s onside). The winger pass it to the Striker, who was offside but now is behind the ball. It the goal count or is the striker offside?

  • @V1kToo
    @V1kToo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Goal kicks as well?
    Corners is obvious because the pass is always backwards, and throw ins as well because the ball is played with the hand (I believe this may also apply to keeper passes). The most elaborate rule in the game for sure!

    recently there was a goal by Alexis Mac Allaster disallowed when Brighton played Leicester. this was because an offside Brighton player attempted and missed an overhead kick in the build up. however, the player didnt block an opponent or cover their line of sight, and instead he was deemed as having "attempted to play the ball". is this an actual reason for a goal being disallowed, considering the player didnt even touch the ball and so technically wasnt involved in play?

    • @andrewschroeder4167
      @andrewschroeder4167 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think he was involved in play because he attempted to play the ball, forcing other players to react to his movement.

  • @TavsIsAbout

    So at 3:37 then, where would the assistant referee flag for the indirect free kick restart? Would it be at the position where the attacker was when the ball was played or at the point where they reach the ball? (So which end of the arrow?)

    • @FootballMeta
      @FootballMeta  ปีที่แล้ว

      The free kick is taken from where the offside player first becomes involved in play, so the moment he touches the ball

    If the last defender (excluding goalkeeper) is on half line and the opponent is beyond the half line and the last defender during the pass, will it be considered offside?

    • @iganpparamarta8813
      @iganpparamarta8813 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I believe you refer to the situation at 01:52, then yes it's offside. You shouldn't exclude the GK because it's important to understand the core rule of offside. Offside : if you are in opponent's half, closer to the goal line than BOTH the BALL and SECOND-TO-LAST DEFENDER. The key phrase is "second-to-last defender". Remember, if your team have the ball, all your opponents are defenders (regardless if it's Modric, Messi, Maldini, or Neuer), and you are the attacker. What you meant by 'the last defender' on your post is actually the second-to-last defender.

    Great video. I only have one problem with the offside rule. Why does it even exist in the first place?

    • @FootballMeta
      @FootballMeta  ปีที่แล้ว

      There was a time when it didn't exist. If you remove the rule, you end up having a player just constantly in the opposition's box, forcing a defending player to always stay back as well. The offside rule, while not perfect, is essential to make the game more fun and tactical

    • @gabrielalohan728
      @gabrielalohan728 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FootballMeta Hmmm, now I get. The absence of the rule will only make for lopsided tactical (attacking and defending) scenarios or even weird moments, for example, a defending team might position themselves in front of the goalpost, lol, since strikers can't be offside.
      Thanks for explaining.

    I never understood how a player can be offside when the ball is played backwards towards the D line. If a player has to move back on side to get the ball, how is his positional advantage still there when he gets the ball?? This irritates me especially when it's a disputed ball, last touched by a teammate but NOT as a pass, just as say a disputed tackle. When the other player comes back on side to get the ball, it's called offside even though, 1 there was no pass, and 2 there is no positional advantage since the player has his back to goal and the D line behind him by the time he's involved.
    For reference, look at the disallowed 3rd River goal against Palmeiras in the 2020 Libertadores semis, how can you possibly call that a pass or a positional "offside" advantage?? th-cam.com/video/8RJSnN-DnYE/w-d-xo.html
