I have a great idea for a level 3 concept album. The main idea is milk, every song is about how good milk is. It will also be 100+ songs and every song will be a different genre. I think it would be a banger
How about this? It's an album called 'Pee Stain' and the entire album has only one lyric: a baby crying. All the songs are metal except for a crying baby,

he's basing this on what he listens to, don't get ur knickers in a twist cause he doesn't mention your favourite albums, create your own spectrum and shush cause he just opened up a whole new world of how I view albums. thank you and goodnight.
Lol if I made a list I would have mentioned none of these albums. No hate to them, just not my style. A concept album list without mentioning the original prof rock stuff from the 60s and 70s seems crazy. Pink Floyd, Alan Parsons, Yes, Rush, Jethro Tull, etc
@@スペスレサ1984 I wouldn’t say that it’s a 5 on the scale, I’d say maybe a 2-3, I’d say dark side is a 3-4 and wall is the most concept-concept album of all time so it’s a 5
The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails is one of my favourite concept albums. It isn’t just shocking and dark, it’s relatable and the way the protagonist self-destructs is deeply touching and disturbing. Masterful songwriting and production! (Trent Reznor’s work in general is some of the best imo.)
I’m gonna be honest I’m impressed you were able to not mention any prog rock bands, especially Pink Floyd and Dream Theater in a video about concept albums
@@Out-Cast75It's not my favorite PF album musically to begin with, but I don't see there being an argument that it's a better concept album than the Wall or even Animals
It's actually really cool the video doesn't touch on Floyd or 2112 at all. It shows that his tastes are not only completely different but has grown up with a different musical foundation. Now I'm going to have some cool albums to check out. (Incoming Rant) Also in terms of PF; I don't know what qualifies someone as an expert in their music, but I've listened to every album between DSotM -> Division Bell start to finish at least 200 times apiece and in the thousands for some. I would absolutely say that The Wall was their most "conceptual" of the albums in that span, although personally it and WYWH are my least favorites due to radio overplay. My Dad and I've talked about it many, many, MANY times. He stands by that Echos is his favorite and I will forever die on the hill that Division Bell is the best album Floyd ever made. (For those who don't know it's an extremely unpopular opinion because Waters wasn't on it, and most of the lyrics were written with the help of Gilmore's wife). After DB comes Radio Kaos (Written by Waters after he left the band). Those are the 2 albums that imo show best who: Richard Wright, Roger Waters, David Gilmore, and Nick Mason were as artists. Also, fuck radio stations that play Wish You Were Here. That song contains too much of the Æther to be played nonchillantly during a workday. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
Damn, this comment made me nostalgic. When I was a kid I was groomed online by this man in his 30’s. He listened to a lot of Genesis, their work was something he was obsessed with. He made me listen to a lot of their stuff. (I wanted his attention so I complied. I wasn’t mature enough to appreciate any of their music at the time.) I’m okay now of course, but reading that title brought back so many details. So many memories. Any time Genesis in general is mentioned I just get sad. I know their work is considered amazing by many and I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to separate them from him in my brain. I’m afraid to listen.
My top 5 in no particular order: Still Life: Opeth Scenes From A Memory: Dream Theater Visions: Haken The Many Faces of Oliver Hart: Eyedea & Abilities Colors: Between The Buried And Me
th-cam.com/video/eIBh4Jpkr2o/w-d-xo.html - here is my own concept album that I have written if people are interested. It's in the form of a movie. I love Scenes From a Memory too
@@spamsingles5948 It’s a concept album in the sense that it can be treated as a continuous piece of music. The songs might have overlapping themes. But same guitar tones, drum mixes and overall tone throughout the album(like SFAM). I guess some would consider it not a concept album since there isn’t a story that links everything.
Really love your music discussion tbh. Don't usually put in this much thought towards it, so seeing someone else do so helps me appreciate it all a lil more!
One of my favorite band, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, almost only does concept albums, not in terms of story but in style : the type of instruments they use, the genre they explore, the recording method they use... almost all their albums (soon 25) feel unique in that regard
Their story driven concept albums are great as well! Murder of the Universe, Eyes like the Sky, and PetroDragonic Apocalypse are all what I'd consider to be 5 on the scale
The poem is being read throughout the whole album and each line he leaves off on leads into the concept of the next song. Tpab is extremely conceptual.
Alright so... WHY THE HELL DID YOU NOT ONCE MENTION PINK FLOYD!? Their 3 most successful albums are concept albums. Dark Side of the Moon: All about the mundane and ultimately overwhelming problems in the world. This would be a 3 Wish You Were Here: All about how their guitarist, Syd, lost himself due to his childhood, and quick fame. easy 5, maybe 4 The Wall: About the literal personification of the band itself going from childhood to stardom to isolation. Definition of a concept album, 5
You beat me to it. I would have said the exact same thing except mentioning how WYWH has 4 songs each representing Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. As well as them each being how you react to power. I'd say WYWH is a 4, The Wall a 5, Dark Side a 3, and Animals a 4.
I think Dark Side is a 4 or a 5 too, my friends. I mean, there's a thematic narrative from song to song, and it has a clear beginning and ending. You just can't randomly shift track orders in that album. Every song leads to the next song.
I think the point he was making in the video worked totally fine without needing to mention the albums, and the fact you guys have been able to discuss those albums using his framework means the video has done it's job.
My personal all time favorite concept album is IGOR by tyler the creator. Every song works to create such a perfect story of heartbreak and murderous feelings
My top 5 Concept Albums 5: Leviathan - Mastadon (5) 4: Songs For The Deaf - QOTSA (2.5) 3: Kid A - Radiohead (2.8) 2: Wish You Were Here-Pink Floyd (4.1) 1: Robot Hive/Exodus - Clutch (2.4)
My top 5, no order: Scenes From a Memory - Dream Theater Remedy Lane - Pain of Salvation Operation Mindcrime - Queensrÿche Metropolis pt. 2 - Dream Theater The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails SFAM and Mindcrime are probably the best examples of a 5
I can't believe you didn't talk about Pink Floyd. The Dark side of the Moon,The Wall,Animals,Wish You were here. I know their don't tell a story like what Greenday gave us Jimmy or MCR "The Patient" but these albums literally is an epitome of Concept Album. And Legit forgot Ziggy Stardust by Bowie.
Green Day also have 21st Century Breakdown and their trilogy (editing the latter into a double album gives you a 4, close to a five - you have a pretty strong narrative). Blink-182 has a couple that reach 3 or 4 - California, if rearranged, closes in on a 5. And Metallica has some albums with reasonable concepts (i.e. Master Of Puppets and Death Magnetic).
My top pick for a 5 is an album called ''Everywhere At The End Of Time'' by the caretaker. Without the rest of the album some tracks just sound like a garbled mess of distorted oldies music but when you take all six and a half hours of the album and put it together you get a story like no other. The album is a story about someone with dementia as he progresses through the disease until he meets his fate. All the tracks line up and lead perfectly into the other to create the journey, and the last track, those last 6 minutes are extremely emotional when you get the context and listen to the whole thing.
To me it's more of a 4. The concept is there, but without the liner notes it just sounds like the sound of decaying music. Which is cool, but the concept makes it much more impactful and personally i wouldn't get it by just listening to the music.
One concept album you might like is Deloused in the Comatorium by The Mars Volta. It tells the story of a man named Cerpin Taxt as he try’s to commit suicide with rat poison and fails and he suddenly transports into this alternate dream reality because of the coma he’s in. It explores themes of depression and suicide and it was actually based on a friend that Cedric and Omar, the singer and guitarist of the band, knew who committed suicide. The lyrics are a bit cryptic, but the music is seriously some of the best stuff with Rick Rubin as producer and Flea of RHCP playing bass on the album. Seriously tho, I only heard this album last year and it instantly became one of my favorite albums of all time, that’s how good this is.
Alright now here’s my important question to you: Does a concept need to be communicated through lyrics? I’ve heard many albums that tell a story independent from the lyrics of the song, due to the production of it throughout. I’ve also heard albums with 0 lyrics throughout, but they still tell a story if you pay enough attention. Do they count as concept albums? Edit: I know you can’t go too in depth with communication through non-lyrical music, but could it at least get a 2 on the scale do you think? Like Vivaldi’s Four Seasons takes you through the different aspects and emotions of the different seasons. What would you think about that?
I definitely think so, Everywhere at the End of Time is a collection of concept albums that convey their message perfectly without using any lyrics, so I would say that they definitely count as concept albums.
Holy shit I had no idea that Marianas Trench was so critically acclaimed. As a Canadian I just remember them as the band on the radio all the time. Starting to wish I wasn’t 20 drinks deep at their concert so maybe I could’ve remembered something from it 💀
I always considered the perfect concept album to be one that can tell a cohesive story but still have stand out tracks that you might listen to separate from the album, ie. Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime
You expressed your views very well, but it's worth mentioning that a story needn't always be told in a linear or chronological fashion, nor do it's "chapters" need to flow perfectly one into the other. I would argue that the future of the concept album lies in allowing instinct to dictate where certain "chapters" lie within the overarching story, even if it doesn't make logical narrative sense at the time. Life doesn't always seem logical, even if a certain degree of logic reveals itself in retrospect. Kid A is a great template for what the concept album can be: a speculative fiction with allegorical undertones told via a series of perfectly executed musical vignettes that stand both on their own as individual pieces as well as fragments of a larger idea.
oh hell yeah i love concept albums if anyone sees this here are some great ones to check out Hawaii: Part II by Miracle Musical - super awesome concept album about a sailor named Simon. maybe also about 9/11??? nobody knows for sure. probably a 3 In The Court of the Crimson King by King Crimson - all of the songs on this album tie back to the Cold War, namely Vietnam, and themes of love, war, dystopia and religion. the songs are also just really good on their own. between a 2 and a 3 i'd say Nonagon Infinity by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - a great album with 9 songs that all tie together and loop back to the start. this neat time motif is repeated many times throughout the song, along with an underlying story of the apocalypse. it's likely a 5 The Ship of Theseus by Chonny Jash - A story about the titular Ship of Theseus problem, reusing the same, yet different song, over and over again. probably a 3 or a 5 Chonny's Charming Chaos Compendium; Vol 1 by Chonny Jash - 27 covers of Tally Hall's songs, along with a few from individual projects by Tally Hall members (including the aforementioned Hawaii: Part II)- while also telling a story of its own, with a guy's Heart, Mind, and Soul fighting for control. easy 5 Gothic Whore by Chonny Jash - A line of songs about characters from gothic horror literatures forming a band, such as Jekyll & Hyde, Dracula, Carmilla, Frankenstein and the Fall of the House of Usher. Winston Smith from 1984 and Jim Hawkins from Treasure Island are also there. i'd say it's a 3
i'd also add that sgt peppers includes many themes of everyday life in it's album!! more than i can really include in a short comment. this video is 5 years old by the time i'm writing this, so you've probably noticed that by now, but if not i'd urge you to look at the mundane everyday vignettes sgt peppers paints. beatlemania at it's peak, the fictional band aspect, and then fixing a hole and a day in the life being about paul/john's equally mundane lives in contrast despite being on such a pedalstle. it's definitely more of a concept album than people give it credit for!
knowing who clipping. and porter robinson are makes his taste in music infinitely deeper than most, just get over him not sucking off the old mainstream🤷♂🤷♂
I'm so shocked because I usually never know the bands in these kinds of videos, but almost all of the bands you mentioned liking are the ones I also love! It's pretty insane to me how similar our music tastes are haha, I had to subscribe for that alone
I can't imagine a more perfect 5 than Boris' Flood. It is four tracks long, and it tells, literally with its sound design and production, the story of a flood - from the calm before the storm to the colossal mass of water destroying anything in its path to the slow quiet once it is gone. It's amazing.
Great video man! Other examples of level 5 concept albums you should DEFINITELY check out: Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral Tyler the Creator - IGOR The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pink Floyd - The Wall Kevin Abstract - American Boyfriend Also, I'd just like to put it out there that most BROCKHAMPTON songs are 3s.
I want to share my examples of two concept albums: Crybaby by Melanie Martinez and A Thousand Suns by Linkin Park, probably not on 3, but I think close to 5 on the spectrum. Also there is a whole Russian folk-punk rock band whose most songs tell a medieval story, but I didn't listen to them in order, so not quite sure(Korol I Shut)
You should listen to The Dear Hunter. The Acts are, in my opinion, one of humanity's most important musical achievements. They tell an overarching story between 5 albums over the course of a decade, and are my favorite attempt at concept albums by an immense margin.
@@longinuscyclone213 idk if you still looking for an answer lol but i just want to share experience. well, for me, my songs are basically autobiographical stories so they make their own concepts. for example last year (2020) i was struggling with depression and i wrote lot of songs during that time period. and most of the songs were about how i feel lost in the world, with explaining the reasons. i’ve almost written all my traumas in my songs. and after a while i listed them as chronological order which parallels with my life. for example: this happend to me, and this led me to this one and that made me feel like this etc. and after that i created a kind of umbrella concept that can fit with the songs and my life. which actually turned out to something that im really proud of
@@longinuscyclone213 and after that, last summer, i was struggling with finding my own way in life so i wrote lots of things about it. then i had this idea of actually connecting the albums. so after leaving my concept character (who is also me lol) in the first album, i took him again and keep telling his story. kinda like in the first album he was lost in the forest and i told traumatic experiences he had in the forest, and for the second slbum he’s looking for a way out and trying to make sense of all the things happened to him, instead of just being sad and in pain and crying about it under some tree lol… so basically i told my own character development with connection two albums and creating one time line
Great Conceptual Albums -Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid m.a.a.d City (or tpab but I think gkmc is more conceptual) -Pink Floyd - The Wall ( or literally any release from 1970 to 1979) -The Caretaker - Everywhere At The End Of Time - Stage 1-6 -Clipping. - Splendor & Misery -Tyler, the creator - IGOR all i can think of rn
For me Sgt Pepper has a story It is a play in a theater. Everytime I hear my LP I wish they could have made a "We'll be back soon!" at the end of side one and a return on side two to clarify the concept again
@@coilindonaghy8702 I think he meant more like an in between thing like when performers take breaks. If they did this on side 1 it would’ve made it cool that it happened right before you turned your record because that would’ve been the break😂it’s a good concept
For some reason, I have Sgt Peppers and Magicial Mystery Tour as a single album - 24 tracks and 76 minutes (so this would have been a double album in 1967). It is exceptional in my opinion.
Susurjbfuf I went into this wondering if you’d ever heard of Mariana’s Trench and then when they eventually pop up had me smiling so much!! They’re my favorite as well and all of their discography means so much to me, and I most admire the artistry and heart they absolutely put into all of it. Astoria has been where I’ve spent most of my recent time, but I always nerd out about how they approached ever after and its listening experience. And also how listening to the entire discography beginning to end is the absolute most amazing experience.
Every time I think about what makes a concept album, I always think about Tool's Lateralus even tho I think they just alright with occasionally amazing songs
Here’s some more concept albums for you to listen: Songs for the Deaf by Queens of the Stone Age. The Incident by Porcupine Tree. Tommy by The Who. And what are to me the greatest concept albums of all time: Deloused in the Comatorium Frances the Mute Both by The Mars Volta.
I love this. Like I know Sgt Pepper is a concept albums and I know The Wall is as well, but I just can’t for the life of me call them both concept albums like they’re of the same nature, so I like this tier system lol
twenty one pilots have told a story throughout multiple albums and that's pretty cool, like Trench to SAI to Clancy have progressed a single story over the years and it's still probably not over just yet
Now 2023 I think Trench by Twenty one pilots is on the level 5, not only the story but also the songs are awesome, and I think Blurryface is maybe level 4 in my opinion
Jay. I can't say this enough. Listen to the mechanisms. they are a perfect five, easily on par with splendor and misery IMO. A space folk adaptation of fairy tales, Greek myth, Norse myth and a king Arthur space western for good measure
Fear Factory - Obsolete. It’s a concept album with written scenes for each song that tell a story. Whats even cooler is it’s a concept album that’s part of even a larger concept story with two other albums.
Tool - Lateralus, Porcupine Tree - In Absentia and Karnivool - Sound Awake (double concept really as it's a continuation of Themata which came a few years before it) are the greatest examples of concept albums in modern prog metal. It took me 23 years to fully crack the story Lateralus is telling and it was a bit of a wham moment. Vicarious off 10,000 days, as the first song on the album that followed, ties into it as well. In Absentia I think everyone in the scene is aware of the concept in a general sense, and Karnivool being an Australian band means many haven't heard of them, but if you're into prog in any way definitely check them out
I know this is 5 years old now, but I just found it and please, please, please tell me you have at least tried The Wall...even if Pink Floyd ain't your jam it is as perfect a 5 as I've ever heard. For one of my favorite bands, Jethro Tull, I'd put Aqualung in the 2nd tier as it's basically a collection of songs about the underpriviledged and then a collection of songs about religion. Thick As A Brick is probably a 3rd tier because it has a "concept" (being a poem written by an 8 year old boy and set to music by the band) but doesn't tell a story. Passion Play is at least a 4, maybe even 5, since it was designed to function like a play with characters and a story with beginning middle and end, even committing to the "play" narrative with a silly "intermission" piece (the hare who lost his spectacles) so you can go pee and get more popcorn.
Ever since I heard the term concept album I've been obsessed with them. Now I'm really exited to apply this concept spectrum to my favourite albums! I'm pretty sure most of the albums I listen to would be in the 2-3 range but I'm certain of one album that's definitely a 5, that being Dead Beat by Rufus Rex. Without spoiling too much, It's about someone who tries to bring back the dead. Rex also plays with the POV a fair bit, with my favourite song being from the perspective of who is dead being resurrected and its horrifying if you think about the lyrics for too long. If you've heard of Creature Feature's music, Rufus Rex is literally just Creature Feature but a bit more rock to it (also cooler imo) Shame the only Rex album done (so far) was this one.
I'm not surprised they aren't in the video, but Dream Theater has some of the best concept albums out there. You have Awake which is a 3 or 4 Octavarium, which is somewhere between 3 and 5 depending on how much you consider part of the narrative And not to mention Metropolis Pt. 2, which is, in my opinion, the definitive example of a concept album and a 5 on your scale
The Decemberists Picaresque album is a good 3. Each song is kind of as if its part of “some” theatrical piece. Not really connected but a great “hey what if we did this concept”. The album covers adds a lot to this, IMO. Their album The Hazards of Love is a full story throughout the music, Id say 4.5.
I love Damn. By Kendrick Lamar As a concept album because it tells a completely different story when you reverse the track order but the whole concept of wickedness or weakness flows perfectly in the album
What do you give the following albums: Eloy - Dawn Eloy - Ocean 1 & 2 The Protomen - Acts I & II Christian Vander - Les cygnes et les corbeaux Paul Shapera - The New Albion saga Paul Shapera - The Ballad of Lost Hallow Acts I - III Coheed & Cambria - The Armory Wars Garrison Ulrich - The Pink Side of the Moon Rhapsody of Fire - The Emerald Sword Saga Rhapsody of Fire - The Dark Secret Saga Xanthrochroid - The Story of Etymos Nightingale - The Breathing Shadow Act I - V The Dear Hunter - Acts I - VI Magma - Their entire discography except 'Merci' Defeater - Their entire discography Alesana - The Annabel trilogy Fear Factory - The Machine Trilogy Dream Theater - Metropolis Part I & II Riverside - Reality Dream trilogy A Forest of Stars - Their entire discography Ayreon - The Theory of Everything Daft Punk - Discovery Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway The Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed Yes - Tales from Topographic Oceans Kamelot - Silverthorn Nightwish - Imaginaerum Seventh Wonder - Mercy Falls
I'll give some of these a listen, apart from The Dear Hunter, which I would give like a 4.8 because I don't know how many points to dock for spreading it out like they do (I almost put it the vid, because I love that series, but thought it might further complicate things), I don't think I've listened to any of these front to back-- some of them I haven't even heard of, but I'll report back! thanks for the suggestion!
Biffy Clyro's Balance not Symmetry was written to be a soundtrack but also to be a consumable story in and of itself. I think that then, even though it is technically a soundtrack, out would be higher than 4. Maybe 4.6 ish.
Level 6: it's a concept album that tells a perfect level 5. But. If you listen to the songs in reverse order, they also tell a cohesive story that is different. the next album is a continuation of the first album, and listening to those songs backwards gives yet another story. Listening to both albums in reverse order together gives another story, and listening to album 2 in normal order then album 1 in normal order gives yet. Another. story. Bonus points if there are multiple interpretations for each story. Anyway, have you figured out which albums I'm talking about yet? I won't spoil it so good luck 🫡
My favorite concept albums: 1. The Father of Death (5) 2. The Protomen (5) 3. The Downward Spiral (5) 4. Thirteenth Step (2) 5. Scenes from a Memory (5)
absolutely love your music taste! thank you for introducing me to marianas trench! im glad to have found someone who also enjoys owl citys music other than fireflies 😂 but yeah i appreciate the effort you put in your videos and i would like to see more videos about music!
Vaudeville Villain by DOOM/Viktor Vaughn is a very effective concept album, you can really savour the experience of following this character around this grimy slightly sci-fi city, including of course fully acted out scenes of him attending an open mic and then returning later in the album to perform there himself. It's probably a 4.5 or so on this scale as the order isn't always important for every track and a lot of the lyrics aren't directly part of the story.
This was a kid trying to cover adult subjects. He had a narrow selection of music relevant to a time period when concept albums aren't really used and didnt even touch music from when the concept album was at its prime. The approach was well meaning but I think you need to spend time listening to music, get outside your box explore some other peoples lists and listen to that music.....Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Moody Blues, Rush, Yes, King Crimson, Smashing Pumpkins, Genesis.... and show tunes and soundtracks is not concept album material either so I wouldnt include it, it's a different style of writing.
my favourite tier 5 concept albums are the triptych by Marilyn Manson. Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals, and Holy Wood. 3 albums that follow one continuous story
If you like concept albums, you NEED, I repeat, NEED to check out the band Coheed and Cambria if you haven't already. Not only are they the millennial version of RUSH, 9 of their albums 10 are CONNECTED sci-fi stories. If you talked about any of those, you'd have to talk about them as a whole, so on the spectrum, they would be a 7. The consept is so ingrained in the band that they have comics for the orginal story, and Coheed and Cambria are literally the name of the original main characters. The first 4 albums are literally one big story, the 5th is a prequel of that original story, the 6th and 7th are a double album and are another prequel but WAY before the rest happen The 8th is the one without the consept but there's a little sprinkle of consept in the middle And the 9th and 10th are a sequel way after everything else happens, and its a confirmed pentalogy, so we still got at least 3 more amazing albums left. This band is literally incapable of making bad music, and their discography is so broad that there's something for everyone with any good taste in music. This band mean the world to me, so I try to get as many people as I can to acknowledge them because they are the most underrated band EVER. (I've accidentally spent half an hour writing and editing this comment because this band has changed my life for the better)
Great video and gives me a different angle on concept albums. My favorite concept album is Still Life by Opeth. This progressive death metal masterpiece tells a story of an unholy man being banished from his town which then he comes back to confront with his love Melinda. When the people find out Melinda is in love she is killed which sets the man in a rage. They catch him and he is hanged joining Melinda.
i have a concept album idea based around my personal experiences: namely all of the crushes i've had on celebrities and fictional characters and the ways each are unique. it's chronological, starting from the intense feelings of my first crush and following me throughout, ending on me coming down to reality and realizing my loneliness. i thought it was a 3 at first, but i think it's more of a 5 now...
I have a great idea for a level 3 concept album. The main idea is milk, every song is about how good milk is. It will also be 100+ songs and every song will be a different genre. I think it would be a banger
I think that could be good, but after a handful of songs, it would kinda feel like you're milking it.
MM..FOOD but only milk
How about this? It's an album called 'Pee Stain' and the entire album has only one lyric: a baby crying. All the songs are metal except for a crying baby,
How about a concept album about being happy and nice things happening?

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars - David Bowie

Well said bro 👏

@@alastairwatts525 it was even in his library!
And dream theater
The wall was in your library and you never mentioned it.
Atom heart mother should be a 5 too
@@スペスレサ1984 I wouldn’t say that it’s a 5 on the scale, I’d say maybe a 2-3, I’d say dark side is a 3-4 and wall is the most concept-concept album of all time so it’s a 5
BASED profile pic
The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails is one of my favourite concept albums.
It isn’t just shocking and dark, it’s relatable and the way the protagonist self-destructs is deeply touching and disturbing. Masterful songwriting and production! (Trent Reznor’s work in general is some of the best imo.)
I’m gonna be honest I’m impressed you were able to not mention any prog rock bands, especially Pink Floyd and Dream Theater in a video about concept albums
considering Darkside of the moon is the best concept album ever made.
@calrosmagana9493WYWH maybe, the Wall is an L. Animals, Dark Side, and WYWH are easily the best 3 Pink Floyd albums
(Incoming Rant)
Also in terms of PF; I don't know what qualifies someone as an expert in their music, but I've listened to every album between DSotM -> Division Bell start to finish at least 200 times apiece and in the thousands for some.
"The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" is one of the best concept albums ever made. Way ahead of it's time.
Damn, this comment made me nostalgic. When I was a kid I was groomed online by this man in his 30’s. He listened to a lot of Genesis, their work was something he was obsessed with.
He made me listen to a lot of their stuff. (I wanted his attention so I complied. I wasn’t mature enough to appreciate any of their music at the time.)
I’m okay now of course, but reading that title brought back so many details. So many memories. Any time Genesis in general is mentioned I just get sad. I know their work is considered amazing by many and I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to separate them from him in my brain. I’m afraid to listen.
@@emptysoul8462 woah woah woah, this was just a random comment talking about their favorite concept album. this is so random.

What's Colors' concept?
@@spamsingles5948 It’s a concept album in the sense that it can be treated as a continuous piece of music. The songs might have overlapping themes. But same guitar tones, drum mixes and overall tone throughout the album(like SFAM).
I guess some would consider it not a concept album since there isn’t a story that links everything.
@@lunanimomusic Oh I wouldn't call that a concept album then. Still likely my favorite prog metal album though
Actually sounds intriguing
Their story driven concept albums are great as well! Murder of the Universe, Eyes like the Sky, and PetroDragonic Apocalypse are all what I'd consider to be 5 on the scale
I'd argue both Nonagon Infinity and Infest The Rats nest would be 5s as they fully dedicate themselves to their plots.
i would add polygonwandaland and fishing for fishies tbh, theyre basically a concept band
And that's not even considering that there's a plot that connects all the albums
To Pimp A butterfly is a solid 5
5 stars?
Hugh Leigh did you even watch the video?
@@djayco1234 haha i see what you mean. I was just kidding because its such a good album that it deserves 5 stars aswell has 5 on the scale
Gkmc is more of a 5 than TPAB
The poem is being read throughout the whole album and each line he leaves off on leads into the concept of the next song. Tpab is extremely conceptual.
Alright so... WHY THE HELL DID YOU NOT ONCE MENTION PINK FLOYD!? Their 3 most successful albums are concept albums.
Dark Side of the Moon: All about the mundane and ultimately overwhelming problems in the world. This would be a 3
Wish You Were Here: All about how their guitarist, Syd, lost himself due to his childhood, and quick fame. easy 5, maybe 4
The Wall: About the literal personification of the band itself going from childhood to stardom to isolation. Definition of a concept album, 5
f, daddy's gone
Ace Cola as well as animals
My personal all time favorite concept album is IGOR by tyler the creator. Every song works to create such a perfect story of heartbreak and murderous feelings
Talking about concept albums and not even mentioning To Pimp a Butterfly is actually insane (very good video tho)
My top 5 Concept Albums
5: Leviathan - Mastadon
(5)
4: Songs For The Deaf - QOTSA
(2.5)
3: Kid A - Radiohead
(2.8)
2: Wish You Were Here-Pink Floyd (4.1)
1: Robot Hive/Exodus - Clutch
(2.4)
Songs for the deaf... mannnn that one is just perfect idk what else to say
My top 5, no order:
Scenes From a Memory - Dream Theater
Remedy Lane - Pain of Salvation
Operation Mindcrime - Queensrÿche
Metropolis pt. 2 - Dream Theater
The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails
SFAM and Mindcrime are probably the best examples of a 5
I can't believe you didn't talk about Pink Floyd.
But The Wall actually tells a whole story, in fact that was most of the inspiration for The Black Parade.
Dark Side of the Moon - 5
Wish You Were Here - 3
Animals - 3
The Wall - 5
Na mate
so glad to see Marianas Trench. they're definitely my favorite band ever
I believe Kid-A would be your answer.
Talks about concept albums and doesn't mention any Prog bands.
My thoughts exactly. It's like talking about sex and never mentioning genitalia.
Exactly. Coheed and Cambria is literally named after the characters present throughout their entire discography
I strongly agree! Dream Theater scenes from a memory should be here!!!
He literally mentioned in the first few minutes that it's only albums he listens to
You expressed your views very well, but it's worth mentioning that a story needn't always be told in a linear or chronological fashion, nor do it's "chapters" need to flow perfectly one into the other. I would argue that the future of the concept album lies in allowing instinct to dictate where certain "chapters" lie within the overarching story, even if it doesn't make logical narrative sense at the time. Life doesn't always seem logical, even if a certain degree of logic reveals itself in retrospect. Kid A is a great template for what the concept album can be: a speculative fiction with allegorical undertones told via a series of perfectly executed musical vignettes that stand both on their own as individual pieces as well as fragments of a larger idea.
oh hell yeah i love concept albums
if anyone sees this here are some great ones to check out
Hawaii: Part II by Miracle Musical - super awesome concept album about a sailor named Simon. maybe also about 9/11??? nobody knows for sure. probably a 3
In The Court of the Crimson King by King Crimson - all of the songs on this album tie back to the Cold War, namely Vietnam, and themes of love, war, dystopia and religion. the songs are also just really good on their own. between a 2 and a 3 i'd say
Nonagon Infinity by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - a great album with 9 songs that all tie together and loop back to the start. this neat time motif is repeated many times throughout the song, along with an underlying story of the apocalypse. it's likely a 5
The Ship of Theseus by Chonny Jash - A story about the titular Ship of Theseus problem, reusing the same, yet different song, over and over again. probably a 3 or a 5
Chonny's Charming Chaos Compendium; Vol 1 by Chonny Jash - 27 covers of Tally Hall's songs, along with a few from individual projects by Tally Hall members (including the aforementioned Hawaii: Part II)- while also telling a story of its own, with a guy's Heart, Mind, and Soul fighting for control. easy 5
Gothic Whore by Chonny Jash - A line of songs about characters from gothic horror literatures forming a band, such as Jekyll & Hyde, Dracula, Carmilla, Frankenstein and the Fall of the House of Usher.
That scale is very useful to classify concept albums. Thank you😃
"OH MY GOD WHY DIDNT YOU MENTION PINK FLOYD"
-too many people in the comments
My personal black and white definition of a concept album is an album whose tracks are sequenced with an artistic intent rather than a commercial one
"Likes music", just not enough to mention any Prog bands...
Not having Lamb Lies Down On Broadway is a travesty
Haken has some Sick concept albums
knowing who clipping. and porter robinson are makes his taste in music infinitely deeper than most, just get over him not sucking off the old mainstream🤷♂🤷♂
I'm so shocked because I usually never know the bands in these kinds of videos, but almost all of the bands you mentioned liking are the ones I also love! It's pretty insane to me how similar our music tastes are haha, I had to subscribe for that alone
Trench is my favourite concept album as of now!
I can't imagine a more perfect 5 than Boris' Flood. It is four tracks long, and it tells, literally with its sound design and production, the story of a flood - from the calm before the storm to the colossal mass of water destroying anything in its path to the slow quiet once it is gone. It's amazing.
The only concept album i’ve ever fully listened to is hawaii part 2
Great video man! Other examples of level 5 concept albums you should DEFINITELY check out:
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
Tyler the Creator - IGOR
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Kevin Abstract - American Boyfriend
Also, I'd just like to put it out there that most BROCKHAMPTON songs are 3s.
I literally just finished writing a concept album, I think it still needs a bit of work, but it’s turning out quite nicely.
how hard was it? cause I write and I cant write a concept album to save my life lol

For me Sgt Pepper has a story
It is a play in a theater.
Everytime I hear my LP I wish they could have made a "We'll be back soon!" at the end of side one and a return on side two to clarify the concept again
Mister Ravioli They did tho. Have you never heard the outro track?
Every time I think about what makes a concept album, I always think about Tool's Lateralus even tho I think they just alright with occasionally amazing songs
it's very much a concept album and a journey. I had a music teacher once call it a modern day hero's journey through the 7 chakras and the 7 planes.
Here’s some more concept albums for you to listen:
Songs for the Deaf by Queens of the Stone Age.
The Incident by Porcupine Tree.
Tommy by The Who.
And what are to me the greatest concept albums of all time:
Deloused in the Comatorium
Frances the Mute
Both by The Mars Volta.
Level 6: The Radio Gnome Trilogy by the Band GONG, 3 Albums: Flying Teapots, Angels Egg, You (early 1970s)
My favourite is Operation Mindcrime by Queensrÿche
I love this. Like I know Sgt Pepper is a concept albums and I know The Wall is as well, but I just can’t for the life of me call them both concept albums like they’re of the same nature, so I like this tier system lol
twenty one pilots have told a story throughout multiple albums and that's pretty cool, like Trench to SAI to Clancy have progressed a single story over the years and it's still probably not over just yet
This totally isn't a video i keep coming back to
i love concept albums, i think all glass animals albums are incredibly amazing with their theme
The Incredible True Story is my favourite I like Logic a lot
Now 2023 I think Trench by Twenty one pilots is on the level 5, not only the story but also the songs are awesome, and I think Blurryface is maybe level 4 in my opinion
My top pick for a five would be Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino. Wasn’t out when this video was made but it’s an amazing album.
In Absentia I think everyone in the scene is aware of the concept in a general sense, and Karnivool being an Australian band means many haven't heard of them, but if you're into prog in any way definitely check them out
My guy,,,, a fever you can’t sweat out is Panic’s most solid concept album, it IS a concept album 😭

Hadn't found it at the time, but I could not agree more.
Not even a mention of the downward spiral.
True Fives:
The Wall- Pink Floyd
2112- Rush
Animals- Pink Floyd
80% of the albums you’ve mentioned are my favorite albums of all time!
I'm not surprised they aren't in the video, but Dream Theater has some of the best concept albums out there.
You have Awake which is a 3 or 4
Octavarium, which is somewhere between 3 and 5 depending on how much you consider part of the narrative
And not to mention Metropolis Pt. 2, which is, in my opinion, the definitive example of a concept album and a 5 on your scale
I see those clipping albums in there! Such awesome pieces of work, they inspire me to write a concept album and thats why im here hahah
Famous last words albums though 👌🏼
Im trying to write a concept album though and this helped me out thanks ❤️
That's awesome, i wish you good luck on your album (writing my own totally isn't why i laid all this out in the first place)
Polarity: Jay Maniac thanks man 🙏🏻 and i cant tell if thats sarcasm or not haha but yeah great video either way
ok but an album doesn't have to be a rock opera to be a concept album
it doesn't have to tell a story in order to be a concept

No problem, enjoy the albums
Biffy Clyro's Balance not Symmetry was written to be a soundtrack but also to be a consumable story in and of itself. I think that then, even though it is technically a soundtrack, out would be higher than 4. Maybe 4.6 ish.
My jaw dropped when I heard you mention Astoria. Mad props, man!
king crimson, my only danger, the dear hunter, coheed and cambria, between the buried and me
Level 6: it's a concept album that tells a perfect level 5.
I won't spoil it so good luck 🫡

absolutely love your music taste! thank you for introducing me to marianas trench! im glad to have found someone who also enjoys owl citys music other than fireflies 😂 but yeah i appreciate the effort you put in your videos and i would like to see more videos about music!
"WhAt AbOuT tHe WaLL????" he doesn't need to mention it. I think it's universally acknowledged as a level 5 concept album it kinda goes without saying
I know they weren't out when you made this video, but Igor and After Hours are definitely perfect fives too.
Trench by twenty one pilots is a 5 for sure! You probably didn’t hear it till after this video.
my favourite tier 5 concept albums are the triptych by Marilyn Manson.
The first 4 albums are literally one big story,
the 5th is a prequel of that original story,
the 6th and 7th are a double album and are another prequel but WAY before the rest happen
The 8th is the one without the consept but there's a little sprinkle of consept in the middle
And the 9th and 10th are a sequel way after everything else happens, and its a confirmed pentalogy, so we still got at least 3 more amazing albums left.
