It's a really basic camera. Basically point-and-shoot. If you want anything over a smartphone camera besides the optical zoom lens you might want to look for a more advanced model.

Flagship phones are better at a given focal length most likely. You'd need to step up to a 1" sensor camera like the Sony RX100 series to get a quality improvement, in my opinion.

Have a high chance of getting this for Christmas. I'm a Sony nut with Sony headphones and a Sony camcorder. My camcorder is only 9 megapixels but this one is 18 so it's doubling up
What camcorder do you have? More megapixels, especially on a camera like this with a small 1/2.3" sensor, isn't very important. Especially in any type of video mode.
The sensor in your camcorder is actually smaller, but it has half the pixels. Think of each pixel as a little cup that gets filled up with light. A bigger cup can get more light for a cleaner image (called signal to noise ratio). I'd suggest trying to find the camera at a local shop so you can try it out. Spots when taking photos of the sky? Maybe there is dust inside the camera. In that case the only thing you can do is send it to Sony for repair/cleaning.

I think image quality will be better with the phone. It looks like imaging resource has both this camera and your phone if you want to look at their samples in detail. Not possible. What you can do is use an external recorder with a lav mic and sync the video in your editing software. It can be difficult so it's not something I personally suggest. Sorry, I'd have to look back at my source files to comment about the camera and generally I can't test audio at the camera shop. it would be unfair to everyone there having their voices and what they are saying in the background of my videos. I've managed it a few times for other videos filmed there, but it depends on how busy it is at the time of recording.

I just made a "samples" video for this camera, but I didn't include the audio. It wasn't anything useful. The video clip is toward the end. I looked at my footage recorded in 2018. It was black, so there isn't any way to know if it is plastic or painted metal, at this point. You best best would be to contact Sony and ask them.

People tend to forget what's important when it comes to a camera be honest it's not the megapixels is the sensor the sensor size and the sensor power and if it's stacked or not. Right now cell phone sensors are not even one inch. And no matter how many megapixels you have is all about the sensor size and power of it. Great example would be the Sony a7siii. That has a full-frame 12mp sensor and there is no cell phone today that takes better pictures or video. The same can be pretty Sony a6400. That has a 24-megapixel aps-c sensor. And no matter if the cell phone is 48 megapixels or 61. If the sensor is not the same size as a PSC or full-frame it doesn't come close. So what I'm trying to say is it's not about megapixels more than it's about the sensor that's more important
Almost anything is possible if you understand what you need to do. Passport photos need even lighting and framed to a specific size for print. This camera doesn't have a hotshoe for external flash. Though, you could potentially use the internal flash to trigger external flash. For passport photos it's more about understanding the rules and being able to follow them than the camera used.

I own this one and having a hard time taking pictures in good lighting condition. In auto mode it most of the time takes completely black photos (due to 1/1600 shutter speed I guess). Anybody else facing this issue?
Never used that Canon and it appears to be significantly larger. You will have to decide for yourself if you want a large camera you need to use a bag with or this one that fits in a pocket. The Canon lens has a lot more zoom range.

I haven't tested a iPhone, but I think the phone would be better under most circumstances. The benefit this camera has is the optical zoom lens if you need more range than a phone. The RX100 series of cameras would produce higher quality results, but they are pretty expensive. A larger alternative that's a good value is the Canon EOS M100.
sony have a strong brand name, however, I have owned many sony products inc. Cameras, PlayStation and minidisc recorders and all except one standard play minidisc recorder i still have in fully working condish. Everything else had to be binned. My current sony cybershot camera is less than 4 years old and already has an annoying e 62 10 error. As for the PlayStation forget it, I'd never buy another one ever. Rubbish. Probably deliberately so.

It's a little beast, i have one, Sony vivid colors, great stabilizer, video is useful for internet videos, pretty decent.

I can't confirm if quality is better or not, sorry. If you have something like a Google Pixel 2 I would think not.

Is the tripod mount metal or plastic? Sadly some cameras comes with plastic tripod mount and that will not hold up nearly as long as metal will.

I can not change the shutter speed in my camera. Is it all auto or can we chance the shutter speed?
