    The analogue video look is so closely associated with an era, the 1980s and 90s, that it's difficult to shoot anything today without evoking that time. It's such a visual timestamp, aesthetically speaking, it would be interesting to hear anyone shooting analogue for non-nostalgia reasons.

      @LordBackuro 2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      I do it partially only a little out of nostalgia but not because i am 80‘s obsessed but simply cause it makes things look fun and stuff its one of the few times imo where less imo is better
      I Simply like it because it conveys Cinema and "photo" so much
      It’s not perfect that’s what is great
      about it
      I just think it gives me warmth.
      Also i like using the cams analog is just so cool to use.
      As a metalhead taking images of me and m friends is always fun and beautiful to look at.

      I have an analogue Sony DVD handycam made 19 years ago, anything recorded on it looks itself to be as old as the camera. Going to experiment by taking stills and videos of object/places that weren't around back then e.g. The Shard (London) etc

    I love that analog look -- it adds a certain atmosphere and cinematic flare, while the digital camcorder just looks like plain old reality, which, ya know, I see everyday through the lenses of my eyes.

      It has nothing to do analog and everything to do with the sensor. That’s the CCD look. MiniDV is digital encoding and still gets the same look when you shoot with a CCD camera, even more so when using a 3 CCD camera like the VX1000 or 2100.

      Hehe or upscaled analog for the... strange but crisp sharp quote sharpness turned up high.. sort of look.. like it is I guess trying to upscake from lower resolution but not using an actually older pre say mid late 00s/flat panel vs flat faced crtvor plasma display panel.. from the 1979 or 20th century sometime.. hd cams came in our modern sense of the word high defiition.. in 1979 onwards but yeah... fun factveven the SUPERA NINTENDO has mostvorvall titles on it officially licensed ones.. capable of surround sound.. minus the info on cartridges to say that.. because copyright of thevword dolby surround being a cost of money thus eliminated the effortvto mention ability to do single back speajer surround with leftvand right front sound.. using the needed additional stereo equipment.. but yeah many do not realize you can play on official hardware castevania /cassablanca 2 or 3?/hotel transylvaniawhatever the game in thecexample J sawconline on youtube demonstrated in
      Also if you wanted they did in fact do such a thing.. is demo the sony sound processor used in all snes consoles.. via a cartridge capable of up to a minutecor a few perhaps of about cd qaulity sound.. if only used for storing sound on a 4mb or less snes cartridge.. vs the n64 with ok or less sound but up to 64mb of game size.. for reference modern or more modern gamecube discs hold up to 1.4 GIGABYTES.. vs mb.

I personally love living a simplified and fun life. I am fixing up his all original One Owner 1971 1080sqft brick home and loving finding the hidden treasures and the odds and ends! I am keeping to a 90s theme. Minus the bright neons lol!! A earthy green and brown and white look!

    Oh man, this took me back to high school, I used Hi8 cameras all the time, and the school had a dedicated player connected to an editing machine. Eventually, I got to use the newer Digital 8 camcorders, which used a firewire cable to connect to the computer for import. All the editing we did was in Adobe Premiere. There is a certain look to that old camcorder footage, and while it brings me back, I find working with my D750 for video today is far better. As for editing digital to look like analogue, not my thing, but your footage certainly makes me enjoy the look! PS: I came over to your channel after Lucy Lumen recommended it!

    Another thing i found out is that if you get to find some old point and shoot camera, it can also do similar results to the analog camera when the resolution is set to vga (480x600). Still not the best or the same but to some extent it does the trick.

    Thank you for bringing back the nostalgia for this analog device. I remember when I first started out in video with this Hi-8 format. The jump to the the subsequent digital generation of Mini DV was quite noticeable in terms of image quality and sound. Then when HDV and other HD formats came along, looking back to the old footage was almost unbearable. Today's 4K or 8K still didn't quite have the impact of the transition from the Mini DV to the golden HD generation.

    I have only now seen your video contribution and as a former Hi8 Fimer I would like to say something about it. My Hi8 film equipment consisted of the very good Sony CCD V600E camera and the Sony EVS 9000 recorder as a player for the PC. The recorder had TBC on board and produced an excellent picture by eliminating the 2-line color replacement on the screen or PC. The video image was absolutely stable with no line jittering at the edges of the subject. That was a very good starting point for editing on the PC. The clips produced in this way still look good on large flat screens today. Of course, the Hi8 resolution of around 400 lines is a long way from HD. But in certain image sections the difference is not that serious. Today, of course, with 4K everything is cleaner and almost unnaturally sharp, almost unrealistic. Nevertheless, the analogue time had its charm in the high-end range.

  • @rockrecordreport7136
    @rockrecordreport7136 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think that the failure here is the screen capture recording method. The proper way to do the transfer is to use a analog to digital video converter box like the Canopus ADVC 100 ($100 to $200 used), then go FW 1394 (firewire) to PC and end up with a DV or AVI file. Much more accurate display of what the analog 8 camera can do. But if one wants the easy way to do this, then fine OBS got the job done. But a pure digital conversion from analog via Firewire is the pro way to go.

    I used to capture Hi8 tape via firewire PCI-e card to digital file for my school-university project, you'll get a really better video quality from Hi8 with the uncompress AVI with PCM lossless audio on Windows and Prores on MAC, compare using RCA output that was down streaming to USB and then was compressed again with OBS. With firewire card it will be separated into clips as you press the record too. Or even for better quality just use the DVCAM deck with SDI output then use Blackmagic Hyperdeck to capture. I have used it last years to restore some of miniDV tapes, after that upscaled to Full HD resolution. It was really wonderful quality.

    I appreciate the work. I really do. But if to dig into the topic. I believe, the true comparison of analog and digital would be watching the cassette running through the best professional player or rerecorder (or whatever its name was at the time) just on the screen - meaning watching it through the shortest chain possible. Because the way many people do like that it's comparison of digital technology recorded with an analog camera against "digital" recorded with a digital camera. For example, that easycap usb thing (or whatever its nonamed name is) is a poor choice. Than another thing - it's just one of the few analog technology. What about film? You can't compare shooting movie on a film against digital consumer camcorder. When ccd sensors were growing we thought "wow, it's so sharp!", then the first HD came out and we thought "wow, it's so sharp!", Then Full HD came out and we thought "wow, it's so sharp!". So the pictures that were shot on digital stayed in res that were shot in. But movies that were shot on film were digitalized with big sensors. And we can watch them today like they were shot in 70,80, 90 on a modern digital movie camera. In 20 years the same movie will be digitalize with bigger sensors, and they will look modern. Guess what, movies that are shot today in Full HD will stay in Full HD. Yes you can process them with effects. But it's not the same.

    Did you use the Sony DCR-DVD810? That retro footage kinda looks like it.

    Watching the Hi8 video on a laptop does NOT do justice for it at all. It looks old and 80's time. I have 20 yr old MiniDV tapes that i play on my camcorder and they look really good on that 2.5 inch screen.

    Shooting on a 480p digital camcorder gives the same look as analog. You’re comparing an HD digital camera to Hi8, so of course you’ll see a major difference.

    Just for the record, vinyl records were NEVER outdated.
    The music industry TRIED to make them obsolete -- it only ended up being a VERY temporary reprieve.
    Now, vinyl is stronger than ever -- even more so than digital sales of music.

    Is there a video camera which kinda has the look of the Hi8 but which works with a sd card? I have a camcorder for minidvds. I really like the look but most if the times the dvds do not work and they are very expensive… also I can also use them only for one time…

    I have a Sony TRV 140 which I still use and just ordered the analog to digital device so I can start uploading previous and current recording to my iMac. I also have a Sony HDR as well as a 4K recorder but sometimes I just want that nostalgic look, I’m old school from the 8mm film days when I got my first 8mm camera 50 years ago to film my new born son🤣🤣

    Both cameras use analog sensors so there won't be much of a quality difference anyways. I use a Sony MiniDV (digital tape) camera and the quality looks exactly like your "analog" camera because the sensor itself is analog.

      Not really the same thing. Mini DV is just the same quality as DVDs, but with a higher bitrate, and can be transferred through FireWire instead of those crappy composite video capture cards.
