Finally snagged one of these. Thank you for this review which put this on my radar to compare to Samsung Q90r (7.1.4) & Nakamichi Shockwafe (7.2.4) set. This appealed to me more due to (1) quality of sound coming from a real speaker company; (2) easier setup and (3) the true wireless rear surrounds. I don't like exposed cables in between furniture and with pets that like to chew up and pull on cables this works out too. Additionally I avoided all the wimpy Bass soundbars like Vizio and most of the Sonos type setups. They just lack the "oomph" and barely tickled me with and their lows. I tested a few different ones at home just to be sure and highly recommend other folks to do the same. Your space matters when it comes to properly having the output and the necessary Decibels to "feel" your movies and tunes. My previous JBL 3.1 system lasted just over a decade before finally getting fried by a surge. Thanks again and I will be recommending folks your way.

Well the Samsung soundbars are made by Harmon Kardon which is one of the top speaker companies out there, and JBL is owned by Harman. But yea i def agree with you for some reason the Samsung Harman Kardon soundbars def lack bass, the quality of the bass is good but as you stated doesnt have enough oomph, due to the subs lower wattage 6-8 inch subwoofers. I had bought the Samsung HW-Q60T, the quality of the sound was really good and it had great features but i returned it cuz of the wimpy bass as you put it, the sub was only 160 watts with a 6.5 inch speaker. I then went with the JBL bar 5.1 Surround which has a 300 watt 10 inch sub and im much happier, it booms. The only con about it so far is the lack of sound modes and EQ adjustments, you can only adjust the bass, but the one mode they give you is def good enough for me to like it, and for music i just use the EQ in Spotify so that solves that problem.

Hi,i have right now the jbl 3.1 soundbar, and i was thinking to change with this one,9.1 bar. Please, tell me,only in terms of low bass, what is the difference between those two? They have the same 10 inch driver on subwoofer, the same dimmensions for the enclosure. It is any differences?

how do you like the JBL 9.1? I am beating myself up over what soundbar to go with. I have 13ft ceilings and an "open floor plan" so I'm not sure what type of system is best for this application. Upfiring speakers, or software based virtual atmos like on the Sony HT-z9f. Currently consider the Sony Z9F, JBL 9.1, Samsung Q90R, or the Nakamichi 7.2.4. I just can't get over the looks of the Nakamichi...it just looks cheap to me even though I know it puts out good sound.

The first bar I received was faulty. Couldnt keep connection to the rear speakers, the sound kept changing between stereo and surround when the rear speakers was docked to the soundbar. The sound crackled. The calibration kept failing. The JBL support wasnt any help at all. I desided to return the soundbar to my retailer. JBL felt bad for all the trouble I had and sent me a 20% voucher which I used to buy a second JBL 9.1 bar. I have now tested the second bar a few days and it has worked flawlessly. I am happy I gave JBL a second chance, because man, that bar has awsome sound. And with the money saved on the second bar, thats a good investment.

You just need to ask good to setup a new device on your phone and it should just scan for the JBL at that time.

Cool, this time you got right how the rear satellites need to be positioned! Don't know why JBL choosed not to give us more control on the subwoofer, on the old 3.1 and 5.1(with satellites) systems you could set the woofer volume from 0 to 30, that was awesome because if you watched something at night you could even lower the sub to 0 or whatever you liked!

We've owned the 9.1 for over a week and can officially say for $999 this is one of the best surround set ups for the money. Crisp sound, clean dialog, deep resonating bass and accurate spatial sound. We had purchased the Sonos Arc surround set originally and loved it however when I visited a friend and heard the JBL I decided to take the Sonos back and picked up the JBL. I can say that the Sonos set may have a slight edge in some areas but in our opinion no were close to Justify the extra $800.

Upfiring/Atmos speakers are not infact channels. Atmos works like the old Dolby Prologic II/ Prologic IIz that decodes AAC 5.1 or AAC+ 5.1.2.Prologic IIz is the father of Atmos.
Atmos/DTSX is in fact 5.1 real channels or in isolated cases 7.1 channels with Audio digital data, and also have a data channel for instructions to rip off some parts and redirect them in upfiring speakers.
Same with AAC, 2 channels for audio and one data channel with instructions/ commands.

Atmos also works over ARC, not just eARC. Over ARC it needs to transfer via Dolby Digital Plus, over eARC it will be able to transfer via Dolby TrueHD. This is only used by blu-rays. Netflix only transmits via Digital Plus so a TV with Netflix (native app or another device like a Nvidia shield TV) will only ever need ARC, not eARC.

Plus the TV has Dolby Atmos feature which I didn’t realize until I watched this video. You don't count the up pointing speakers to the first #.

eARC CAN transmit Atmos from your smart TV to the soundbar because the 'smart' tv side of things - Netflix and other apps, has compressed Atmos, which can go via ARC without eARC. What ARC can't do is take your blu ray Atmos from TV to soundbar.

I feel the same about my Bar 3.1 as well. The music reproduction sounds metallic and hollow. The saving grace is the sub woofer. Play the same bass tracks on the Polk magnifi max and you will realize how powerfull the JBL is although the sound is not very good

@@augustya7543 The answer is no. The JBL 10 inch woofer crushes my house. The MagniFi Max can not compare in that area. The Bar bar 3.1 sound is... hollow and metallic but the BASS CRUSHES. The Polk is more warm and "loud natural overall" sounding to me. I can compare AG 7 Rings, GM I get the Bag and La Roux Going in for the Kill Scream rmx and there is a huge difference in bass. The 9.1 has the same sub as 3.1 so hopefully the bar itself has better sound quality overall. The difference in BASS is tremendous

Hi Carlos and thanks so much for your question. The downward attitude of the bass driver will only slightly affect your downstairs neighbors. Bass swells into a room in all directions and very differently than how the sound of your voice travels, and when the grenade explodes in the film, whether the woofer is front-firing and 4 inches off the floor or facing the floor won’t make a huge difference in how your downstairs neighbors hear the grenade exploding from your subwoofer. Every aspect, every control, every salient feature, every minute part of the complete system was spoken quite eloquently (W/O dramatics) is well appreciated. One other prominent part that missed by many dramatists is that of activation of Dolby ‘Atmos’ HDMI combination can only be noticed by connecting ARC HDMI from the TV to JBL mating ARC HDMI receptacle. Explanation of ‘Atmos’ and eARC was unknown to me. Thank you for that. Your recommendation to use wired network is noted. (No one spoke about it)

This seems to be a nice setup, especially with the detachable wireless speakers. If I didn't have my 1,000 watt Nakamachi 9.2.4, which I am extremely happy with, I would have definitely considered this. Mine has two subwoofers and mine most probably goes louder, but this would be loud enough. I think what JBL should consider is adding an additional subwoofer and increasing the available ports on the sound bar. Most affordable TVs have between two and three HDMI ports (Not 4) so the increase in the HDMI ports and the inclusion of an additional subwoofer would steel potential buyers of the Shockwafe that I have and the Samsung Q90R.

Didier, I assume you have the Philips Fidelio? I'm using the Fidelio HTL9100 with removable speakers too and i love it. I think Philips was the 1st to come up with the wireless removable rear speakers setup. It gives great immersive surround sound.
But it's old technology because it doesn't do Dolby Atmos or DTS:X.
I'm also looking at this JBL 9.1.
From what I have been reading, it will add "height" making the surround experience even more immersive. I have not had the chance to test it out in the shops, wouldn't want to buy without listening to it 1st. But the Dolby Atmos capability paired with true wireless rear speakers setup will likely be the reason for me to buy it once I have the chance to test it out.
Not sure about the HDMI cable part, maybe someone else can comment on this.
Hope you get a chance to try out this speakers and you can decide if it is worth the upgrade.
