As a F80 owner, I feel like there needs to be a pt 2 to this video discussing more nuanced things like the way the top mount intercooler can leak, the bushings/tie rods can need service, and more about the carbon prop shaft and why the gas tank was changed as well as technical updates going from year to year. This could easily be a one hour video
The engines designated as N and S variations are very important to the future engines BMW rolls out. All of them are unique and one of a kind. I'd love to get into all of them. But the topic is the S55. And my comment pertains to reliability and how it gets there. The N54 brought the N55 which brought the S55. The predecessors had there share of problems. We all hate issues and engine problems. But they're necessary. Without them we don't develop an engine like the S55. If it wasn't for it's predecessors and the issues they had the S55 wouldn't be what it is. BMW truly is "The Ultimate Driving Machine".
big advantage of s55 is lighter chassis and higher compression engine, big advantage for s58 is all the research and developement from b58 trickles into s58 platform,if s55 got same support and same transmission s55 would be on same level or further since many clues point to s55 block as actualy the strongest out of them all.
N54 guy here. I really love my engine, and know so much about it. I really enjoy watching these videos, getting the low-down on other engines. I'm keeping my 135i forever, but I am curious on what life would be like with an M2C or M240i (F series) I'm probably going to keep the 135i only because of the hydraulic steering, unless someone were to come out with some sort of hydraulic steering retro fit for modern bmws. That would be amazing!
For Correction, they changed from a Magnesium Oil Pan to a Aluminium one because of some breaking problems. :) And they changed at 11/2017 from a Carbon Driveshaft to a Steal one because due of EU Regulations for OPF Filters because of Testing Space and to make the changing of the Creation-Process smoother. And the Charge- and Boost-Pipes are breaking. But its the best engine / car you can get for your money. I got a M4 Comp F82 with MHD Stage 2+ 580 PS 850NM and i drive with the M-Performance Wing and a M-Performance spoiler from 100-200 km/h 6,55 seconds corrected with some mods and 102 Octane Fuel Aral Ultimate in Germany.

In my opinion b58 is way overhyped and for a majority of people the s55 is a better platform. F8x prices have come down and the price to get into either platform is comparable. Stock turbo/ fueling/ engine/ trans with an e85 tune the S55 can make 600 whp When people talk about crankhub, nowadays crankhub fixes are 2-3k out the door. How does this compare to a 10k pure transmission build, turbo upgrade pricing, or fuel system pricing for a B58 just to get to 600 whp? All these shop build b58s with 30k+ into them running crazy times is something most people are never going to do. Stock block engine limits are comparable between the two aswell. IMO s55 is superior to a b58 short of an all out engine build.
@@gwspomyou can single turbo an f8x for the price of a b58 pure transmission build. Btw s58 has the same unequal length exhaust setup as an s55. Reason why it gets less hate is because the equal length midpipe/ single midpipe set ups that were developed for the s55 were quickly repurposed and used for the s58. Most of the hate for s55 sound was because of the factory midpipe before we knew how to make it sound better.
You don’t need a pure build for 600whp it’s all about the torque once u start hitting 700ft-Ibs is when u start pushing it 800ft-ibs and u can say bye bye to that transmission
so if a crankhub issue on s55 repells potential buyers, a potential snapped exhaust cam ledge or even the cam itself can snap in half issue that b58s may have is no less risky
I struggled with this myself, had to get the F80 for the 6MT, but if I was going auto it would be a toss up. If you sit in traffic, then the ZF8 in the M340i will serve you better than the DCT in the F80, but if your commute/daily driving is a bit more open, I'd argue the F80 is a better pick.
On the contrary, could a b58 spray water through the charge pipe instead to cool down the stock system further or is this just pointless cause of WTA intercooler being efficient as is?
S55 owner here. Honest answer. Short story. It’s a headache. It’s just a bit different N55 engine in reality. I like it, but it has the same flaws of N55/54. And as a S55 owner I can say that the B58 is from another league as per reliability and power upgrades.
@@MrVanuvanu i don’t know what S55 you bought but that’s false. A lot of N55 parts like water pump and fuel systems were upgrade for the S55 making the S55 very reliable. When you said on another league u stretching it. B58 is a great motor but it’s way overhyped that people ignore numbers
S55 owner here, besides the crank hub, plastic charge pipe, and j pipe, it's an awesome motor. I haven't done the crank hub, but maybe one day I will. Regardless of that potential failure, I enjoy the car (M2 C) and if you want to get power out of the engine it's really easy assuming you accept risk or pay for peace of mind. The B58 is an awesome motor that I'd love in my daily but for a special experience the s55 is just superior, but again, the b58 for being a non S motor is awesome.

The S55 does have a sound fix. With downpipes equal length midpipes or single midpipes with front mount intakes it sounds really good.
