    I tried Kitty Litter Silica Gel and my tester showed 80%+ humidity. I took some and dried it in the oven for a couple of hours and now I'm getting under 15% humidity, so I would say it works but needs to be treated as already saturated when you get it. It was a lot cheaper than other options I could find for Silica Gel, and readily available so I decided to give it a try.

    @stephan from my experience, its good to check the contents of the little gel bags, if the crystal has shattered, its garbage, if its still a round pearl, its still good. you can also try to dry them out at routine intervals to ensure it stays dry

    Sebastian made a very true comment. Use Cabalt and DMF free silica gel, because some indicators are potentially toxic and carcinogenic! Replaced the link in the description with non-indicating silica gel. Health goes first! Just use the hygrometer to judge if the desiccant is saturated or not. I'd make sure that the moisture in the box is below 20%.

    at work we use a vacuum pump to dry out materials during storage. We use mainly resins but i think it can work also with filament spools.

    • @konradritter7543
      @konradritter7543 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marco Calenda i was just thinking of that. Does it deteriorate the material? In vacuum it starts to release gases which might be detrimental to the material properties.

    I'm doing my first run of filament drying with your dry box - silicagel method. I'm still a bit curious when I have to change / refresh my gel. At which percentage do you normally change it. At the moment I have like 24°C and around 18% relative humidity. So it would be around 4g/m³ water..
    Do you thing this condition is capable of getting some water out of my filament or do there have do be less relative humidity?

    When printing the box lid clips, I should probably not use the PLA filament that came with the Creality CR-10s? When attempting to clip the box lid to the box there is a slight cracking sound emitted. Would a different filament type be better for this application? Oh, and I applied the weather seal (on the list) onto the underside of the box lid. Maybe that is the problem? Cheers!

  • @Thomllama
    @Thomllama 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    awesome as always! one thing to look into getting contained silica. much easier and neater. don't have rip the whole thing apart to empty, dry and refill the unit, and it's generally out free. I use EvaDry units. the have a heater and everything built in. turn color, pull the evaders unit, plug it in over night and then throw it right back into the box. Very handy that way with zero mess.

    • @mikemike7001
      @mikemike7001 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Eva-Dry units use orange-to-green indicating silica gel, which contains methyl violet as the color-changing agent. Methyl violet is considered to be toxic, although it's unclear whether it's truly unsafe in this application.

    • @Thomllama
      @Thomllama 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yup, but it's deemed "potentially carcinogenic" in large volume, but safe enough and can possibly have medical uses. the Blue changing ones use cobalt chloride which is just plan toxic. In reality both are incapsulated in the silica and have very little chance of being harmful unless you over heat them and they pop open. which again, Makes the EvaDry safer as it's a much lower temp compared to an oven and is near impossible to have happen.

    • @mikemike7001
      @mikemike7001 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably not a problem unless it's disposed of improperly and kills some fish. ;( Do you find that one Eva-Dry unit per storage box is enough? How often do you need to "recharge" it?

    • @Thomllama
      @Thomllama 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ya, one is enough for each of my 72 qt boxes. Mid summer when here on New England shoreline the humidity averaged 80+ percent, it held under 30 percent humidity and I had to re charge over night like once a month. Winter, with heat on and super dry low 30% humidity like once every 3 months if that. That is going to depend on how often you open the box and such. I had 2 yr old filament that was soaked and was going to toss, thew it in there for a week or 2 and it was actually printable again, not going. to say it was perfect cuz it wasn't, but was usable for prototype printing where I just wanted to see how the shape is of the model.

    Why do you store the filament in that orientation in the box? You loose space for potential more filament rolls for each box... I use the same IKEA box, Samla 22L, and I printed these, which you don't need to screw/bolt through the box (though it might be helpful to glue/silicon them in place) www.thingiverse.com/thing:1888463
    There is also this version www.thingiverse.com/thing:1752874
    And these clips remixed by me, from a great design I found on thingieverse also www.thingiverse.com/thing:2216335
    so you only need 4 of them to close it properly. Requires about 16 cm build height.
    The box has PTFE connectors on both the inside and outside, but I didn't have any PTFE tubes connected at the time I took the latest picture :)

      In usa, use a sterilite gasket box. Ziploc also has a gasket box, but the sterilite is easier if your local home depot has them in stock. Note all 4 home depots in my area reported having between 1 and 7 gasket boxes online, but none actually did. Make sure to call ahead. It will save you a drive. Luckily the lady at the first home depot was nice enough to call ahead with the item code and saved me the remaining 3 drives.

    Just found this old video. In more recent videos, it is mentioned that disccicant with indicators is bad for human health. But I have not yet found anyone stating why. Can someone please explain?

    Dumb question from a newbie here. Seems like filament always comes in some kind of semi-airtight bag when you get it. When storing filament in a dry box like this, should it be kept in those bags or is it best to not use the bags to allow the silica gel to do its thing more readily?

    How does nylon hold up in moist environments after printed? Like making parts for kayak as an example.

    • @CNCKitchen

      It will get slightly softer due to the moisture uptake.

    How did you connect the bowden tube to the extruder?

    • @sourcererseven3858
      @sourcererseven3858 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      He didn't. It's not needed, as the filament is pulled through, not pushed like it is between motor and hotend in a bowden setup. The PTFE tube here is just used to reduce the exposure of the filament to moist air, and maybe to guide it if you fix the tube to somewhere. It also makes it harder for moist air to get into the box through the holes for the filament.
      I'm planning on building something similar for my PLA, just because I'm storing it above my printer anyway, so I can just as well make it easily accessible when I want to change colors. For PLA I could probably get away with just making sure the hole where it leaves the box is tight (maybe with a sponge seal), but I think I'll add at least some tubing, maybe even enough to guide it close to the printer.

    Kitty litter Silica Gel works very well, just dry it before in a oven or microwafe. Stefanie should have done that too, since it's much cheaper.

    not relavent to the video, but i havent used my 3D printer in a while, so i never got to dry my silica beeds in a year. i got a new printer and didnt have a plave to put my drying box since the spool holder is on the top and not the side, so i had to take my filimet out of the box. being in California where the wether is crazy, the filliment did eventualy got wet, so i decided to go dry my silica bveeds finaly. let me tell you, those beeds took in so much moisture from the extream humidity caused by a summer heat wave. the heat was so bad that it rained hevily in the mountains and the evaporation from the rain reached my city. it felt like the sauna. in those few days, the beads turned to dark green. they look almost black. not sure how long it will take for them to turn orange again. but i think it will probably take more than an hour for me.
