    I love driving on the Autobahn. People know that how fast you might go, there is always someone faster so they look. I find it very relaxing cruising at 180km/h, I am in the zone and fully concentrated, I love it. Herein the Netherlands during daytime it is 100Km/h and one gets bored and starts to look around etc. It really takes discipline to stay focused.

    According to the savety on the german autobahn, there are a lot of rules in place. I think it also has to do with the germans love to follow rules, for whatever reason. They also like to remind other people of the rules, for example, if someone wants to cross a street at a red light. Generally we look out for another and if something is not "normal" it catches our eye and we are interested and look there. This is perceived as "the German stare" :D
    And also the "TÜV" (mandatory car maintenance), high educated drivers license (with first aid courses) and the quality of the roads.

    The "trust" is because every driver in Germany MUST exam a driving school with lots of hours and a theoretical and a practical test. So all drivers are on the same level of driving skills exept the experiance which You get by driving for Years. And when ONE THING is expensive in Germany than it is a drivers licence. It costs about 1500 to 2500 €, it depends on how many hours You need and if You get it on Your first try.

    I was born in Germany and live here, we often have traffic jams because we are a relatively dense country and a transit country surrounded by 7 other nations. But weekends for example are often not that congested, so I am pretty used to drive 200 km/h and more. I have a pretty fast car and a motorcycle even faster, the fastest I have driven was the maximum speed of my motorcycle a few times which is 280 km/h.
    Our drivers education is pretty expensive and takes many hours, so most drivers know what they are doing. My driving teacher even forced me to go really fast on the Autobahn during driving education by pressing his pedal to the metal :D

    If you drive a motor cycle at 120km/h into a pothole or just a bump you very probably will die or be very seriously injured.
    Hence highways must be maintained at all times to not kill ppl. They will add speed limits, do emergency repairs, even block lanes if there are any major issues.

There are however also some older sections to find there where older concrete surfaces were simply asphalted over and sometimes burst open in hot summers.

      decades ago on an almost empty part of the Autobahn on a summer weekend evening (thus also without trucks) i once did 320 km in 2 hours (averaging! 160 km/h or 100 mph) and was driving on the right lane all the time, overtaking one single car and being overtaken by 5 Porsches (certainly going 250-300 km/h or 150-180 mph) in that entire time. the drive itself was pretty relaxed, but on the other hand i also was glad to take a long break from the concentration after arriving at my destination.

    • @arthur_p_dent
      @arthur_p_dent หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Anson_AKB well, the fact that you could use that break demonstrates that the drive was in fact not really "realxing", does it? It certainly was fun with all the adrenaline poured out. But it was also stress.
      That's the thing about going fast - it's fun. But it's NOT relaxing. If you want to arrive at your destination relaxed, you stick to a more normal speed, for example the recommended 130 km/h.

    • @Anson_AKB
      @Anson_AKB หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@arthur_p_dent yes, that speed and also no other speed is "relaxing" (suited to take a mental break and sleep or regenerate), but for 2 hours (then you should take a break anyway) it was "relaxed", able to drive fast on an empty road, concentrated, but not overly stressed.
      too bad that it is not possible to introduce an "average speed" limit. In my experience, 130 is quite practical, but i also would like an option to go a little slower or faster, eg when it goes up and down in the "Kassler Berge", or when roads are more crowded or at some times and routes quite empty, thus not having the stress of checking for the exact speed of 130 all the time (to never "miss out" on allowed speed, and never go too fast either). But with any limit (eg 150 as was suggested) some people would start trying to drive at that limit all the time "because it is allowed", or even at 170 since that would be in a range of "only 20 over" and thus not yet too costly. And still having lots of people going at 150-170, maybe even more than now, or the "felt need" to fully use any max speed limit, could be even more stressfull than the current recommended 130 that also many people voluntarily do.
      I'm not sure whether this would be possible, but what about a general max speed limit of 130 (also on those 3-lane or 4-lane parts of the Autobahn that now have a limit of 120 or 130 by signs), with the additional provision that there are no fines when going up to "20 over" (up to 150) ? Then it would be possible to have those 130 as guideline, similar to the current "recommended limit" of 130, with the option to vary speed between 110 and 150 without problems, but then (above that "tolerance limit" of 150) immediately getting more severe fines, instead of only getting noticable fines at 170+ (for 21+ over) ...

    Uh, as a German I may make one comment:
    During my driving lessons I had to do some lessons on the Autobahn and I also had to drive a (short) distance at the Autobahn during my driving test: To show, that I'm able to drive a car faster than 100km/h. Driving just 80km/h there I consider as dangerously slow - or was it 80mph? That would be pretty average…
    Driving on the Autobahn can be pretty tiresome: You're checking the traffic behind you for at least 1/4 to 1/3 of the time; just to drive safely.

    • @Gazer75
      @Gazer75 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Should be fine doing 80kmh as the trucks are limited to around that. Though most go 90 I believe.
      But yes, the suggested speed is 130.

    • @Anson_AKB
      @Anson_AKB หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Gazer75 since trucks are legally limited to 80 km/h and also are "hardcapped", they usually go no slower than 80 and no faster than 90. and thus that is also the minimum speed that cars should drive to "swim with the flow" when driving only between trucks on the right lane. else they would force trucks to overtake them with minimal speed differences which generally wouldn't be allowed to not block traffic by doing "elephant races" (trucks overtaking each other, blocking several lanes for several kilometers)

  • @DJone4one
    @DJone4one หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    Of course you also have problems on the highway, but 30 - 40 years ago it was much worse. There were over 20,000 deaths a year on the highway. Now there is not only a better understanding of the car and the road due to stricter rules and better driver training, but there are also fewer fatalities. There are currently fewer than 3,000 deaths in road traffic accidents in 2023. With a population of over 83/84 million people, that's less than one percent. In contrast, fatalities in the USA are much more frequent in relation to their population.
    4:29 So he made a mistake in that scene. Because you're not allowed to overtake on the right on the highway. That's forbidden.
    However, it is also forbidden to drive slower than permitted. Because a car that has been approved for the highway must drive at least 60 km/h, but you shouldn't do that. Because that would be much too slow for moving traffic. Even trucks drive at least 80Km/h.
    When they overtake another truck, we call it an elephant race because they are so slow. This is also punishable by law if you exceed a certain time limit, as you are also obstructing the flow of traffic.

      There is no such rule that you are not allowed to drive slower than permitted. That would make no sense when there is no limit. There is also no minimum speed rule of 60 kph you have to drive. Do not confuse this with the respective vehicle requirement of 60 kph min. You are allowed to drive 50 kph or less when that speed fits into the current traffic.
      Max speed for trucks is 100, for very heavy trucks it is 80 kph. This is maximum. 81 kph is forbidden, less than 80 is allowed for those. So they dont legally drive at least 80 as you say. I really dont know what you are talking about. You risk your license if you really believe that nonsense you state.

    There is no speed limit on the German Autobahn, but there is a recommended speed of 120 km/h. The right lane is not a race track, but an overtaking lane. You signal, cover yourself behind, if the vehicle that is going too slowly overtakes you signal to the left, cover yourself in the rear-view mirror, and move back into the right lane. Oh, overtaking on the right is prohibited. That would be normal use of the Autobahn.

But as an European who has been on the autobahn several times, those americans are not comfortable (well, the driver is not, look at his driving position). I have done at most 237-245 kph (it is not that much considering that one those parts there is no limits). And you know what, I felt safe... really I felt super safe.
    Of course the roads with no limits are super nice and people are respectfull unless you are on the super high speed overtacking left lane at 180, you will get a couple of light flashes to tell you that you have to go back to the middle lane.
    Fun fact... there is less accidents on the no limit autobahn than on any "high" speed road in europe (not all of them of course but the accident level is really low)

    "A road without limits" (1st comment) is NOT true!
    Only 2% of all roads in Germany have no SPEED limit, but ALL roads do have rules!
    NO passing on the right!
    Insurance may refuse to cover if you go >130km/h
    2 years technical check for all motor vehicles.
    Whoever wants to merge, must yield to everyone who is already in that lane.
    Vehicles >3.5oo kg (total mass) must NOT exceed 80 km/h and are not allowed in the very left lane (if 3 lane). Busses can go 100km/h, if certified.
    Variable traffic signs can limit almost every sector down to 40km/h if necessary.
    And most of the time streets are simply too full , especially at rush hours.
    Finally, gas is expensive (mid June 2024 Super95 is at around 1.85 €/L, gasoline at 1.70), so if you want to keep costs down, you must reduce speed.

    In Germany, safe driving is taken very seriously, anyone who doesn't drive save can quickly lose their driving license and it's not that easy to get it back.
    The cost for making a license is up to 3000€.
    How to drive correctly so that you are not in anyone's way and everything runs smoothly, teach you the driving schools.
    You also want to pay attention because many fail the first time and then have to pay for the next exam.
    The big truck driving license(CE) costs between 10,000-15,000€.
    Companies or the Bundeswehr often pay for it.
    On the german highway, we have laws.
    If you want to overtake you have to move to the left line, if not, stay on the right.
    There are also distance rules when driving, at least 50-60m distance when driving high speed if possible.
    So that others who want to get on
    the highway have the space to get in.
    The distance is given by the guide posts on the sides to estimate the distance.
    It's pretty organized.

    • @SheratanLP
      @SheratanLP หลายเดือนก่อน

      The distance rule states that you should use half the speedometer reading as the distance or the 2 second rule, which I think is better because it is easier to implement. 50 - 60 meters at 180 km/h, for example, is clearly too little.

    • @Astrofrank
      @Astrofrank หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SheratanLPHalf of 180 would be 90, not 50 to 60, but I usually use full reading, not half. The distance rule is not about other cars getting in, but about reaction time. When the car in front of you breaks, you must have sufficient time to start breaking your car, and if there is too little space, you will bump into the other car before you even start breaking.

Except for the Autobahn for the simple reason that if you hit any pothole or whatever at 250 kmph people will die almost guaranteed. The moment the distance to travel is getting bigger, let’s say above 5-19 km, people travel by car (mainly) or public transport.
      We are still a very car dependent country so car usage is high.
      I regularly drive in Germany also and mainly not on the Autobahn. The Autobahn is mostly in good to excellent condition. The main roads are usually quite good to very good but not all of them. The smaller roads are usually quite good but you often find bad ones too.

    One reason for no pothole is the road being a concrete construction. This is also likely part of the original reason for the free speed.
