In those early 80's MTV years I had a tiny apartment and lived alone. So when I was home I'd have MTV on constantly - even on when I slept. It was a kind of living-breathing background "noise" that I could dip in and out of whenever I wanted. It felt like these were my friends and we were all in this amazing music world together.

During the early 2000s, MTV still cared about their rock and 80s roots. People kinda tend to forget that. It wasn't until about 2005 they went full blown reality TV and pretended like their past never existed.

That zeitgeist of the early 1980s of 24 hour music was repeated in the very early 1990s when the Internet arrived for many of the early adopters. I'm in Canada we didn't get MTV right away but we had Much Music in 1984 but before that and MTV we had The New Music an hour long show. It was like MTV or Much Music it was all about bands, interviews anything music just not 24 hours. Many of the interviews from years earlier were shown on Much Music. Here's one brief look at the start of an episode keep in mind computer and graphics were very limited for the time th-cam.com/video/SV4FWTJ8TJw/w-d-xo.html

Such an amazing time. Love the rewind in 2000, just before the world went to shit with 9/11.

"We had our black dude, the Jew" OMG I think he'd probably get into so much trouble for saying that today!

Lisa M Read the book,’I Want My MTV,’ it’s one of the best I have ever read and the higher ups actually said that when they were trying to find VJ’s.

I remember the Spring day I came home from school and found that my local cable company had added the (brand new) MTV. First video they played was Thomas Dolby, "She Blinded Me With Science." And I don't think that channel changed for the next five years or more. Even though I hated most of the music, there was always something that would come along to edify (culturally), delight or inform.

I basically stopped watching MTV in January 1983, when I went into the Navy. After that I had money to buy cassettes, a boom box, and concert tickets...

interesting documentary! Nina I've seen several times on a Frank Zappa Halloween special live performance he did, where he's speaking to her and I think Alan before performing. Epic stuff from Zappa :)

The trade-off is that we're all on the nostalgia train here on YT. However I would argue that the advent of the webcam killed the video star and introduced the world to reality tv. And like a virus compareable to a digital pandemic it infected all the programming of syndicated channels world-wide. As a result, all the creatively well-produced thoughtful shows and programming succumbed to utter complacency and laziness and not to mention pure greed. The production cost of holding a wobbly digital camera on your shoulder while following a bunch of sychophants around a house is cheap but they still sold ad time at over-inflated rates. C'est la vie. It's life I guess the world changes sometimes for the better sometimes not. But I am loving this aspect of YT for sure ")
