I used to be so addicted to MTV when it first came out. You could hear music and watch videos at the same time. I really miss those days when the whole idea was about music. Music TeleVision MUSIC!! Music based programming not reality programming. Honestly they should change to RTV Reality TeleVision or go back to there roots and bring back the music.

RUSTY BUCKET I completely agree with you. I wish they would go back to music, especially Head Bangers Ball. They can take all the reality shows to VH1 or just make a new channel so people can watch music videos again. Thank you so much for your reply and I hope you have a wonderful day 🤘

Damn at the hours of MTV we watched an listening too. Mark Goodman was the most handsome of all the guys then or that followed. Billy Idol was huge during the early 1980's on MTV. Then things changed and no more MTV music videos like in the old days. Sad ! Those were wonderful times the 1970's after graduation ,turned into the 1980's without the pressures of high school. The 80's was out real introduction to our early adult day. But honestly I never felt like an adult and in my mind and soul I'm still not. Wonderful memories of my friends and family members who were still very much alive and well on planet earth.

Much to the chagrin of my parents it was on the tv almost all day and night. Music videos were the topic of conversation and whenever a song hit the first question was “did you see the video?” It really was amazing how it changed and influenced culture

Facts Verse Yes the bands were awesome. But what I could never figure out is during the mid 80’s they played videos from talent such as Tina Turner Bryan Adams , Hall and Oates, Springsteen. But where I lived in Indiana from 1:00 to 1:30 pm they played the most requested videos of the day. And they were always the Hairbands such as Whitesnake, Cinderella, Ratt, Twisted Sister etc. Never quite understood why they didn’t show the videos of these bands more during the day.

    • @alexanderfretheim5720
      @alexanderfretheim5720 3 ปีที่แล้ว

They got sued a few times in the early 2000's, and it really broke their spirit. They began to transition to shows with Daria, and for a while the programming was actually decent, but it had a particular nihilistic focus and philosophy and when that was combined with the Reality TV philosophy it was perfect lawsuit fuel.
"Never quite understood why they didn’t show the videos of these bands more during the day." Because the people making the requests will tune in during a time of day when they wouldn't otherwise tune in to see the requests, whereas they'll tune in at peak hours regardless. Plus stuff that's being requested has already been seen a fair bit and is probably already borderline overplayed.

@@80sDECADEshouldNEVERLEFT It's funny talking about this. The 90's (especially late 90's) was when the decline of rock n' roll started becoming terribly apparent, and when a lot of the worst record company policies (including the "optimized" cord progression that all new songs started using) started coming in to vogue, but the decline was still at a much earlier stage and so the music produced, while a swan song, was still much better than music now.

I was there when it began and loved it! Used to watch it all the time and record my favorite videos on VHS. it s ok to branch out and try new things but I wish they hadn’t moved so far away from the videos. Martha has become quite beautiful!

The videos helped bring their music to life 💃🏻with a better understanding, the meaning of their lyrics.🧟‍♂️” The Thriller”! Need I say more. Yes I 😢miss❤ my MTV!

MTV didn't have an epiphany moment when Michael Jackson Releaseed Thriller, and THEN started to play more pop. They always played POP! The very first video by the Buggles was pop. Most of the British stuff was pop, and/or synth pop.
MTV were threatened by boycott by some labels because they would not play black music, Michael Jacksons Billie Jean was the track that saw the 're-evaluation'.
Marc was confronted in an interview he was doing with David Bowie when he outright asked him why doesnt MTV play black music. Marc responded that the producers didn't do it because they wanted to appeal more to mid-western sensibilities and rock was the music that reflected that. Bowie of course reminding him that Rock music was at its origin black music.
Exclusionary at its origin... as admittedly, much of the radio waves were.
They played some Lionel Richie, Hall and Oats ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) , and Billy Ocean, then they subsequently started playing some R&B in the overnight..Then we would see some New Edition and Ray Parker jr... It started to change.. eventually..
Run DMC came a bit later with the Beastie Boys.... and that Juggernaut could not be derailed... although many tried.. because... of course... that isnt 'real' music'' Boy did they try.. BUT... Yo MTV Raps.. Yo! MTV Raps being originally a European creation BTW.. It came to the USA later..

I liked Mtv as it was when it started. Martha Quinn does a music show on a local radio station here in Waco, TX broadcast from somewhere else. I loved the interviews with bands and other people. The VJs actually did the interviews at first.

Just rerun blocks of MTV content from the 80s, in their entirety, late night, on one of the streamers. My wife & I would watch that; she grew up in the 80s, I in the 70s, but I like most of that decade's pop and rock, and I dug MTV when it first aired, the deal having been sealed with MJ's "Thriller".😎

The V-jays should make a video for TH-cam to reminisce about the two Christmas music videos all 5 were in: "Christmas is the time to say I love you" (1981) and "Reggae Christmas" (1984).

Back in the 80's everybody in my household watched MTV, it was the channel (channel 25 btw) that we always went to if we weren't watching a movie or the news etc. MTV was great for introducing you to new music and I miss that more than anything. The 80's was just a better time in general partly due to having MTV

They were also forbidden to do endorsements. With their fame Coke Pepsi or Doritos would have jumped to have them as spokespeople. MTV didn't want anyone to be bigger than the MTV brand.

Did you mean Steve Tyler or Joe Perry from Aerosmith. Steve Perry was in Journey. For someone who claims "Facts", you get a lot wrong. Do you do actual research?
