The Saturday Night Special is a weekly video where I discuss everything rockhounding related. Over time, it turned into a mini weekly podcast, and I have been keeping up with it now for 190 episodes with the first episode airing on May 16th, 2020.
I'm very pleased with the series, and over the past four years I have covered countless topics on the show and produced more current weekly content about the world of rockhounding and lapidary than just about anyone else outside a printed publication being run by a team of people.
Now is time for me to take a long break from the series. I might come back to it someday, I might not, or I might bring it back with a different format or even a co-host, you never know, but as of now I think it's time for me to step away from the Saturday Night Special videos.
I will still continue to make normal weekly rockhounding and lapidary videos like you're used to seeing, as well as exclusive content on Patreon. I'm not quitting TH-cam, not by a long shot and if anything, I will use the time I would typically spend making the weekly SNS videos to make other videos and on projects like the website, Lapidary Journal Archive, and maybe we will make some new episodes of the Previously Rockhounding Podcast.
I would like to leave you with some statistics about the series. The 190 episodes have gotten nearly 500,000 views. Over the four years of producing them I earned a total of about $3,400 from the videos. The total playback time on all the videos is 48,615 hours of watch time, and if you watched all of them from #1 to #190 the cumulative playback time of the series is 45 hours and 26 minutes. That's a lot of time to stand alone in my shop and monologue about rock related topics!
I greatly appreciate all of you who have watched the Saturday Night Specials over the years and left insightful comments that led to good discussions. I hope to keep the discussions going in other formats, like these community posts!
    Thank you!

The main branch of the Tacoma Public Library had a librarian who scanned 1,000s of books from their historical book collection- to create a “full text index” (20 yrs ago). This computer base index could streamline historical research. But because a number of these books were still copyright protected, they could not allow the public to use it. It was largely an in-house secret resource. If you were one of the few well-known researchers to the library, you could get access to it if you asked the correct person directly. It’s a fantastic resource, but by that time, I had skimmed through the entire library collection for references about stone, coal, limestone, and brick (it took 6.5 years to do that). Anyway, you may consider a similar method, or to ask for the Northwest Room of the Tacoma Public Library for advice on accessibility to your magazine collection.

Something that helps two surfaces adhere to each other is a good scuffing. The scratches increase surface area for the epoxy to grip. I think your initial idea of pins (or maybe threaded brass inserts) would be the best solution, even a cracked handle would still likely stay attached. SNS is so good because it covers the nitty-gritty of rockhounding, you dive deep and cover many topics.

I do think I will make some changes for the next one and I might even do some drop tests to see what will work really well as far as durability goes.

Since i started trying analyzing rocks and minerals myself, i noticed how difficult it can be to correctly identify. Once i´m settled in my new place i´m deffinitly going to be on the look out for some old mineral magazines. Have you thought of writing a book yourself? It would be nice seeing some new and up to date books coming out that putt all recent discoveries from all over the world togheter, like a catalog of sorts... all while avoiding plagarizing offqource. There are about 18 belgian exclusive minerals for example that are cool and not much people know about. I could be of assistance on the mather for i am belgian and can get around here. The future would be gratefull i´m sure. It might take years but would be a masterpiece if it gets finished. It´s going to take more people from other countries though. Food for thought. 🤘

Just thought of something. How about an open source project where people from all over the world can ad/administer they´re findings?

My father made knives whit his forge. I wanted to start a business called stone n steel. I cut lots of stones. He passed recently and I'm trying to chose a perfect stone to make a handle. Where can I find a nice carnelian here in WA state guy. I know you been all over this state. I just want a good piece. Where can I get some nice stuff.

SW Washington is where it comes from but we never really went there to find any ourselves.

What size handle are you looking for?..I have a few large pieces of carnelian I got while out in Washington and Oregon. Red and orange colors. If you give me a measurement of what you need..I may be able to supply you with the stone.

I've been surfing your Lapidary Journal archive and see that I can't download 1954 and later issues. I've been looking for the year 1967.

Yes, I have not scanned anything beyond that point at this time. However, if there is an article you're looking for, you can request that via email.

Jared, so where do you order Rick’s book? I found his wife’s Facebook page touting the sale at the Crystal Fest, but don’t see a link anywhere (or email) on how to order it. (I’m in Washington State, not Utah, but pass through annually.)

They really don't have a good process to sell them, you just need to send them a message on Facebook and then Venmo them the money.

It would have been nice to have been able to see the golden age of rockhounding and lapidary but I'm pretty happy with the here and now.

Slightly off topic, if that’s possible for an SNS, I bought a decent 365nm uv but I can’t seem to find anything else other than 395nm. Where are you getting your UV lights.
