  • A quick guide on how to repair a common problem with a relay switch, which controls the turn signals on a 2002 Jeep Laredo.
This is my first video as far as repair work goes..... I'm not an expert, but I have the tendency to find the source of the problem and fix things.
While I promise I discovered this myself and used my experience in soldering to fix the problem, I do recognize I wasn't actually the first one. There are such things as forums where people have documented this same process at an even earlier point in time.
By the way, my soldering job isn't the best here, I had a really old soldering iron and it wasn't doing well in heating the solder to melting point fast enough.
But it did do me enough to fix it.
    Some tools used:
    10 mm socket
    Phillips Screw driver
    flat head screw driver
    Solder and soldering iron
I was planning to remake the video for the sake of better narration and steadiness with the camera, but a few others have made videos of this process.

Before buying a new relay I wanted to know where in the Jeep to find it. Your video showed me, and I was able to solder the contacts, so thanks, saved me money and stopped the no turn signal problem!

How often would I find exactly the right solution so quickly, with exactly the right symptoms and perfect details to fix something like this exactly right on the very first try? You just saved us a trip to the auto parts store and the cost of a relay. We didn’t even add more solder, only touched the critical points with the iron and now we are back in business. Excellent video my friend, and worth a new subscriber!

Thanks a lot for this video. Just recently had an intermittent trouble where the flasher would quit working just like in the video.
The whole internet seemed to have their own idea as to what the problem was, but you sir, nailed it. Had 2 connection where the solder was cracked. Time will tell if this was THE fix i needed, but im confident!

Had a similar problem on my Jeep Laredo: the right turn indicator stopped working this week. In my case, the dry solder joint was in the middle of the circuit board, where one of the relay legs is attached electrically. Quick solder and all working 100% Thanks for the tutorial!

Used this for my 2003 Grand Cherokee Larado. Other than not being able to move the fuse box down to make it easier I managed to remove the relay. I had to replace because after I soldered only one side of the flasher repaired. I still saved on repair charges sending it to the shop! Good stuff!!!

First, let me say thank you a thousand times! You saved me a good chunk of change and made me prove to myself that my "contorter" still actually works, lol. I have been disabled due to several conditions and being able to work on my own vehicle was something I truly thought I would never be doing again. My relay is now functioning like a champ. I already had a solder iron and solder on hand as I was senior tech for almost 2 decades on my last job as a component level repair tech.

Thanks for the help. I was able to replace (didn't want to chance a repair) the relay switch. A tip to anyone trying this - my wire harness to the fuses was so tight with no slack at all you can't get full access to the switch. Drop it as far as you can and then you'll need to remove the bad switch and replace working blind. A little aggravating but it can be done. Anyway - it worked.

Thanks for this video. This just saved me $60 at the parts store.
The flashers on my Jeep Grand Cherokee 1999 failed yesterday. The front two were both stuck permanently on (just on not flashing) whilst the rear two were both off. Neither switching left, right nor hazards had any effect.
After checking the fuse (all ok) I removed the flasher relay and it had cracked terminals. A quick solder later with a $1 soldering iron from the dollar store and everything is working great again.

Thank you for posting this, it's still helping people after all these years. I live in Alaska and in a somewhat rural area. I would have needed to order the part and it was going to take two weeks to arrive unless I paid express shipping (we only have one auto parts store in our village). The part was $87.99 and the shipping was $15 bucks. Thanks to you, it cost me nothing but a half hour of my time. Thank you.

I just found out today my signals and hazard lights weren't working on 2001 GCL. I stopped by AutoZone to pick up the relay only to find they would have to order it and they had 2 to choose from and didn't know which I needed. I didn't buy it but went home with the part numbers and prices and figured maybe its cheaper online and fortunately I ran into your video. You saved me $59.99 + tax.
    Thank you

At the 'fount of all knowledge, [a guy in the pub], discussing your comments, suggested it might be a short in the tow-bar socket. Just found out there is a micro-switch in there: that was the problem on mine! I rang my esteemed mechanic, who says he thought of that after we spoke and was waiting for me to phone, to tell me. [yea, right]. Please share this tit-bit.
NONE of the 'main dealer' bods admitted to having a clue; I wonder how many bits they would have swapped, to cure it?

I have a Jeep Cherokee sport 2001. I also followed your video like so many have and repaired the relay the very first time. When I took the relay apart the solder joints looked fine and strong, so I wasn't confident that it work. Since I had it apart I thought I have nothing to lose. I soldered a very small amount as you suggested and IT WORKED!!!!!!
I would like to say thank you for sharing and giving me the feeling of success that made my day. Best of all my 19 year old daughter was once more impressed with her dad that could fix the problem and send her on her way. That doesn't happen to often these days.

This video is awesome, VERY helpful and saved me $$$!! All I would add is soldering in those small spaces was impossible for me, so I did not added an new solder, I simply re-heated the old solder (liquefied it again) let it set, and it worked! I was good to go!

Nice job on this video. I've had this problem on my Jeep for a few months. I could see the cracked terminals. No solder necessary, just heated the solder that was there to let it melt back together. I'll probably get another 200,000 miles out of the blinker relay now!

ok, did this today, i didn't even have to pull the fuse board down, but did use a flash light to match up the pin orientation. soldering was not as hard as i thought, just got the top of the pin hot, then barely tapped daubs of solder wire on it, it flowed down and filled the cracks. thanks for your video.

Thanks for the money saving video.
My 2000 GC had a Intermittent left turn signal issue, removed and inspected the relay, i could see cracked solder joints at the lugs, re-soldered, working well so far.
I had to replace the ECM on this vehicle at 155K (Ebay cheepo rebuild with hole cut to access solder joints on chip( I'm told)) and again at 165K, went with a Cardone this time they seemed to have done a proper job, no hole cut in case. Twice the price but having the engine stop running while driving down the road is a bit unnerving. Odd that Jeep has an issue with solder joints cracking.

Very explanatory video thank you so much for posting. I still seem to be having issues though... I took everything apart and soldered, when I plugged the part back in to check if it worked, both flashers came on and i heard a buzzing noise. Unplugged the flasher part and plugged it back in and the turn signals and hazards still do not work, only by manually pushing on the flasher part itself. I decided to go to an autoparts store and buy a new flasher relay part after all this frustration, and when I plugged the new part in, still nothing happens. No flashers or hazards. I checked all of the fuses and they seem to be good. Any idea what might be happening? Maybe something came unplugged or detached while I was trying to make the repair? The old part will still turn the flasher on manually, but even with the new part when I switch the turn signals or hazards on nothing happens. any ideas?

Make sure , you redo all the connections, not just the one or two , broken , as I noticed , they are all brittle , and just fixing one , may result in others being damage, so solder all , again , to be sure not fix one and break another , and then have to go back several times, , but great tip , and excellent video

my left blinker would work about 20% of the time, i just assumed it was the switch. i spent 85 nonrefundable dollars on the switch, only to find out that was not the problem. my solder joints were ok, just a lose relay im assuming. put some dielectric sauce on her and plugged her in, working like a charm. thank you for saving my headaches and money

I've never heard of dielectric sauce haha, is this a code name for some form of conductive material?

Ben Tordik when you bought the new switch and plugged it in, did the hazards and turn signals still not work?

Thank you so much for this video you just saved me $60. O'Reillys had it in stock. It was a pain in the ass to take that stuff off to get to it though. Especially doing it in Alabama heat... It was 110 hear index here today but by God I did it!

Man, mine just started doing this today, first video I watched the guy uses a rubber mallet and hits the underside of the plastic shroud by the steering wheel and it worked... Until I shut off the engine. Guess I'll be picking up a soldering iron tonight. Thanks for the video, wish me luck haha

Thank you so much, gonna go return my 70$ multination switch that naturally did nothing. PS you don't have to remove the fuse/relay block, you can feel it out pretty easy. Less time than going to the parts store not to mention cost. Thanks again
