Testing Radiant Floor Heat Using Thermal Imager Flir E5

  • I am using the Flir E5 Thermal Imager to balance out radiant heat for one room. Therefore I show off how important a thermal imager is for heating techs. This tool allows me to see all the heat pipes inside the floor. Which allows me to know which ones don't have proper flow. Now after this job I need to buy one of these for future jobs.

      It’s a lot of work laying down all that pipe. I used a 6 or 8” long 2x4 as the spacer for the pex. I have done many radiant installs back in the day. It’s amazing seeing the piping heat up in the floor.

    when dealing with outdoor radiant, the idea is to keep it slightly above freezing so it stays melted off, not wait until there's a foot of snow or expect the just repaired system to clear it in a hurry.
    snow is a nice insulator ( Eskimos and igloos anyone!)

    • @thehvachacker
      @thehvachacker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea I fixed a snowmelt system during a bad snowstorm and wasn't seeing any results. Yet with a thermal imager I would at least see the tubes warming up somewhat.

    that tile floor will take longer to heat up, but it will retain and radiate for a much longer period than the other floor products, even with rugs(unless its over thick insulated concrete subfloor!)
    that is why many tended to do poured gypsum embedded radiant, But if not over very well insulated substrate, it performs poorly, it 100% needs a huge thermal break.
    typically used is thick foam board, but who would trust foam under any walkway, driveway or roadway (stooges perhaps)
    not even the most magical anti-rodent and pest control can keep the foam safe from rapid deterioration, assuming it was made perfectly to start, same for spray foams. the stuff becomes powder or slurry more often than not

    Lots of good uses for the thermal imaging systems. Troubleshooting electrical hotspots etc. Flir makes an attachment for smart phones which is quite a bit cheaper than the regular systems.

      @@beri232 Yes. The savings is in the fact you already own the smartphone which does the processing, display, recording and snapshots. Otherwise you pay for the whole standalone unit with all those capabilities that have to be built in.

    Your company should provide at least a couple of these for their field techs. Useful for more than radiant systems; clogged condenser tubing, refrigerant level determination; detection of overheated bearings and any number other uses. Check out th-cam.com/channels/5Pnrxqqg4BLTsfsUzWw5Pw.htmlvideos; he has been using a thermal imager for a little while.

    I would appreciate a helpful opinion!
    I got hotwater heating tubes inside concrete slab (indoor) flooring...
    The slab(s) are sinking and i want to raise it/them via a local poly/foam injection contractor...
    is this a disaster waiting to happen or is this a likely success path?
    I am thinking about renting a thermal imager from home depot to mark out the tubes myself...is that sufficient to get accurate locations?
    Thanks for any potential helpful input!

    all I see from "in floor" radiant is huge headaches, I hate moving old cast iron rad's, but they seemed the best solution overall. of course a full basement and pipe loss did about the same, as did the boiler being down there... heat rises and gravity fed worked great for many centuries, before the great pocket padding begun....

    • @shawnd567
      @shawnd567 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What are you talking about? In floor radiant is one of the best designs in building HVAC.
      You would need radiators everywhere to even get remotely close to the comfort of in floor radiant heat.

    • @throttlebottle5906
      @throttlebottle5906 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shawnd567 comfort comes at a price , ask all the folks who've had radiant that failed over the years, when they was told it would outlast the house and them. while the products have been improved to things less likely to fail, none of the current stuff it is very reliable. I think of the whole overall package, it;s good for repairmen to have work of course :))

    I have a flir very similar to this one. Make troubleshooting a lot easier.... Very versatile. Good for bad electrical connections too and missing insulation. Diagnosed quite a few mystery blown fuses on roof tops due to poor disconnect connection even thermostats putting off too much heat and reading the wrong temperature. Gives customers something tangible too that they can see I really love thermal imaging.
