      The first too pass was BJ Wilson. Brian James Wilson was one of the best English rock drummers; phenomenal cowbell finess. Brian had a brain tumor and died way to early. There's a video where Brian can be seen with the group and a shaved white area on his skull can be seen.

      BJ played with the group on the David 35:06 Frost Show in the summerof 1970. His playing added life and color to what were two subdued and serious songs, Nothing That I Didn’ tKnow and Your Own Choice. The group received a great ovation and the sound was better than one would expect from a late 60’s era TV set. It was the first time I had ever seen the group and I was impressed by their professionalism. They didn’t go leaping about the stage but stayed in place concentrating on their instruments.

      To me, cluttered sounding and lacking a the heavy beat that drives the real rockers of that era like Simon Kirke, Phil Rudd, Baker and of course Bonham. Every drummer has their favorites, and one of mine is Clive Bunker ('Tull) - could listen to his solos all day. Then there Charlie's swing and Ringo's unique and perfect style. And if it's jazz drumming you want, give me Mitchell. As for the unsung, there's Woody Woodmansey (Bowie) and so many others that got my attention more than Procol's drums.. and in the 70's I had bought three of their records and seen them live. So I know the group well. Just saying...

      @@jrhunter007 - I see what you mean about driving the real rockers with a prominent beat(as played - very well indeed - by the men you mentioned), but BJ was a great drummer, who played for the song - he was Jimmy Page's first choice to play for Led Zeppelin, but he declined to split up with thw group he'd played with for years before they were called Procul Harum.
      The core of Procul Harum was originally the R&B group the Paramounts, which was started by Robin Trower and included Chris Copping and BJ Wilson(playing organ and drums in this video) and later on, Gary Brooker.
      The group was always hard to amplify for live shows and this show is no exception; although the German production is pretty well state of the art for that time. I saw them a year or two later in a small German hall and they were phenomenal(We called 'em back out for 6 encores) and they had a particular liking for their German fans; notice Gary talking back to the fans here. That tour was their last one: they disbanded after that, and all went their own ways; with BJ passing away from alcohol-related ills and Robin Trower having established himself as a guitar hero they didn't reform until much later. It's too bad, they were well-liked all over Europe.
      There's an old saying, "Different Strokes for Different Folks," which applies here, methinks.

I hear so many other drummers that I dig, and have seen countless acts live, including the Beatles & early and late Stones, Zep and Tull (seen Tull & the Kinks 6 times each), but PH's percussion just doesn't jump out at me in any way. I forgot to mention Mick Avory in my original comment. That's why I wondered "why all the fuss" on here for this drummer. (However I do like the snare on the single version of Conquistador). I'm a drummer, got my 1st snare at 13 & my first set at 15. I was also a PH fan, and their keys got my attention, especially organ. I'm also a lead guitarist.

Criminally unmentioned as one of the great drummers of all time, and the unappreciated brilliance of Mathew Fisher. Similar to BJ, he was replaced by good players, but not really equalled in his classical brilliance. Robin was really only able to shine playing live, and, understandably, had to leave the band. At the time, only Procol Harum and The Band successfully combined both piano 🎹 and organ together. Odd that Gary introduces Strong as Samson as a new single. Given this concert is labelled 1976, and Samson had appeared on the Exotic Birds album two years earlier. 🤔

    Thank you for posting this. What a great band they were, and what a loss in Gary Brooker's death. He carried this spirit right to the end. I always get a kick out of watching BJ play. He's one of my favorite drummers of all time, but I can't imagine playing in the position he used. I heard that he was described as an octopus playing in a bathtub, and I can see it. My shoulders wouldn't last 30 minutes playing that low. But his rhythmic feel and choice of fills was incredible.

    When I watch Gary brooker and I guess this rubss off on the rest of the band as well, I'm thinking, what an awesome achievement of personal style and personal meaning of life fully expressed through music. It's just so pure and true. They perform with such zeal that it's a joy to see even those songs that haven't grabbed me yet.

    I lost count of how many times I saw them play. The came through Toronto on a regular basis and in those days it was difficult to find current news on bands and so I did not know when or if the band members had changed, but no matter who it was, they were always 100% great.

    Gran concierto, gran video, parece que los estoy viendo nuevamente, en 1968 o 1969, no recuerdo exàctamente, vinieron a la CDMX y dieron un concierto en al Auditorio Nacional y disfrutè mucho ese concierto, ya que en esos tiempos estaba muy restringido el rock, y era muy difìcil que viniera grupos de rock extranjeros a Mèxico. En ese inolvidable concierto no le quitaba la vista a ese gran baterista B.J. Wilson.

      I love "strong as Samson", but for some reason the words are not as engaging as WSOP, or a couple other PH songs. And I always forget the words in the chorus / hook. I know I found a lyric sheet at one point, but kinda like the words as i first interpreted them, without the copy: "When You're bid in Hell to raise a throne" ... those would be quite enigmatic,... huhh"?

    • @Marctull66
      @Marctull66 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, that's a real pity they were often considered as a "singles band". And they added a lot of passion and power during the concerts as far as i could hear it, also played some slow bluesy numbers a bit faster making them feel more energetic.

    • @anusriskandarajah4600
      @anusriskandarajah4600 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually I thought they were better live. They played around with the studio versions and did things that worked live but that you wouldn't want to hear on a studio album. The exception was their Live with the Edmonton Symphony, which was done like a studio album.

    • @anusriskandarajah4600
      @anusriskandarajah4600 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @E.V. Hodge Too many people just know them for A Whiter Shade of Pale, which is a pity. It's like if the Beatles were only known for She Loves You. However I agree that there still are a lot of people who regard them as one the truly great bands.

    • @Marctull66
      @Marctull66 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @E.V. Hodge : "a new chant" ? Its it meant as an offense ? I don't know how old you are nor in which country you live. It depends on the countries,and the sales bnumber or the rock critics opinion doesn't mean much to me, I love some artists who never sold more than 5 or 10 000 copies of an album - and much less - but... Indeed, after the 90's, when Gary ressurected a new version of the band, that he maintained more or less alive since then, they kind of became legendary (but certainly didn't sell much !)... but if you read the honest liner notes for the remasters on Salvo Records, or on some other record labels, or anywhere on the Internet about their actual sales or chart positions, you realise this... After Whiter Shade of Pale they never went very high in the charts, apart from a couple of singles. I'm not old enough to have known them in the 70's, just a little bit late, but I've read as much as I've could during 40 years about them... For years, in the seventies, alas, they haven't sold a quarter of what they should have sold and several rock critics bashed them down for their classical influences in the years when it wasn't fashionable anymore.... like 76/77. I read a few articles about their albums, really, especially Something Magic (which I do like a lot, by the way), which are not really positive, to say the least. I mean, the first eponymous album didn't even enter the charts in the UK when it was released ! It fared better in the USA, certainly (where they added AWSO, stupidly omitted from the English release)

    Thank you for enhancing and sharing this video. PH was a brilliant live band. They rocked the bluesy numbers and the more classically-orientated songs (the ones I usually prefer) were done in a delicate way but with more passion. I only saw them twice, alas, in 1992 and much later, in 2017 - both great gigs - but it's already something. so this 1976 concert is a treat ! :o))
