The trick to make them last is wood glue. When assembling, make sure to apply lots of good wood glue to every connection and it will stay together for 30 years.
It’s not the staying together part i was talking about , more the shelves starting to bow, but it’s been good, would definitely buy more and we need more
I take it you have never heard that anything from Ikea will not last? well thats a common thought , I just wanted to assure everyone that its not that bad, and cheaper mdf shelves have tendency of bending in the middle, I hope I dont have that problem. the book case has been great so far 😁👍
@@@KivoxEnder The problem in many cases is that people don't stick to the maximum weight distribution that's allowed per shelf or product. The recommended maximum weight per shelf or product is typically listed in the instruction manual somewhere. Surpassing that will cause shelves to buckle - even break. Now, having said all of that, Ikea products have become much cheaper in their construction these days. I bought a Billy bookcase back in 1991, which I'm still using to this day. It still looks brand new and it's just as durable now as it was then. The only difference is that I paid a lot more money for my Billy bookcase at the time because Ikea was still using a lot more material in their products. Today's Billy bookcases have a lot less material. The framing is thinner and the shelves are thinner - the cheaper price also reflects this. Having said all of that, today's Billy bookcases will still last any person a lifetime if they learn to look after it and don't go beyond the maximum weight allowed. P.S. It's not a smart idea keeping your bookcases top-heavy with books like that, even if they are bolted to the wall.
I love the Billy bookcases. I've had one since 1998 which I repurposed, added some crown molding and put in my younger daughter's room and I just bought two more with doors for my room for extra storage. As long as you use them for what they're intended they will last.
The bookcases look super dank! IKEA bookshelves always look really neat. My parents got the standard tall ikea bookshelf a long time ago. We’ve had it for 14 years! So I don’t know what everyone’s saying about them not lasting....🤷🏼♂️ As always, awesome video!
Thanks for these suggestions and comments because I had questions and doubts about IKEA. After this video definitely I will buy two bookcases for now. 📚📚👍
I've got the billy bookcases, but i've got them with matching doors that you can also get at Ikea. It gives them a completely different look and keeps dust of the shelves. I feel the shelves are pretty sturdy, and I don't expect them to break down in years to come at all (even being very full). I agree with your point about attaching the bookcases to the wall, I couldn't do that because I live in an old house that has pipes running along the wall. But even with the doors adding extra weight to the front, they haven't fallen over.
Had my Billy bookshelves for over 10 years until I gave them away for free. They were leaning against the wall only and were full of manga and comics. The only downside to Billy shelves is that they aren't pretty or look like they are low quality.
I found that I did not need it but if you have someone that may climb up like a child or something or your floor is a little wobbly, it may be a good idea. It does come with a L shaped bracket and screw to screw into the wall.
I have some large teacher manuals (lesson planners) that are spiral bound they seem to be about 10 1/4, 10 1/2 inches. Do you have any larger books and do they sit on the bookcase? How tacky would that look if the spiral hangs over?
Doesn't the hardware which connects the corner unit to the other units essentially eliminate the possibility of tipping? You essentially have one large "L" shaped unit (roughly). If the connecting hardware is strong and secure enough, wouldn't that eliminate the need to secure the shelf directly to the wall?
Great question so I have it on carpet Which adds a little bit of squishiness to the feet so you do get a little bit of play there but having the L shape does stabilize it a lot but if you had let’s say a kid try to climb up it or something like that it may tip over at that point but if you don’t then you should be good also if you have it on hardwood you should be even better but now the extended side of it doesn’t have any sort of connection to the L. We have three of the larger shelves and one of the smaller ones in the L shape only holds together two of the larger ones with the smaller one in between the other one is just free-floating you can just put a bracket there to connect it to the other one that would probably also help but I hope this was somewhat helpful and it still hasn’t fallen on me so I hope it continues to be good.
Seems they don't sell the birch veneer anymore. Anyone bought the light oak version recently? Is it any different from the birch color shown in the video? I'd like to buy this but need it to match my older IKEA furniture which is in birch.
Can the angular shelf piece stay on its own in the corner, with all the other bookcases on one side of the wall? The area where I would fit the corner can't accomodate both the corner piece + one billy bookcase, so I'd only fit the corner piece into the corner and then all the billies on one side (hope that makes sense/is possible.) Thanks so much!
IKEA is strange about how they have think in stir and on line it’s technically 9 different products, here is a link to what we got www.ikea.com/us/en/p/billy-bookcase-birch-veneer-s29023398/ hope that helps
lol I mean, I'm by no means an IKEA fanboy, but come on, last only 5 to 10 years? Are you using them as rockwalls? I have the same arrangement and added doors. If you treat them well, they should last a long time. The shelves were so easy to build, my 10 year old was able to help me and do it on his own. You need only 2 people to gently move them. I would advise using the anchor. Don't be afraid of a little pollyfill and paint afterwards. for the few hundred dollars they should last a long time, unless you somehow abuse them. I would highly recommend.
You're always surrounded by hexagons of furniture, I'm worried about you two! I am now convinced you live in an open top, hexagonal room set where people can peer down from above and write on clip boards. ;) I've actually had some of my ikea stuff for over a decade! A lot of their stuff is actually made of cardboard cores but i don't mention that as a negative. The hexagon (OMG I'm talking about hexagons again!) patterned cores they use are incredibly sturdy. The strength to weight ratio is incredible well engineered. I love Ikea! I've only ever seen them fail if they aren't assembled properly. If they're over tightened or not squared up properly they will inevitably fail. /engineering rant over lol!
IKEA being bad? Grew up with loads of IKEA furniture and now that I’ve got my own place. I’ve got most of my furniture from IKEA as well. Everybody I know loves IKEA. The only thing I hate about IKEA is their instructions are difficult to understand sometimes. I also like the concept behind IKEA and their products designed for small spaces and are clever with their designs
5 years ! DOH, The Ikea guarantee is longer than that. You put books on them, you take books off them to read and put the books book on, so what on earth would anyone belong doing to have them last only 5 years !?
if it lasts at least 5 years then I'm happy and don't think I wasted my money . Taking and putting books are not the thing that ruins bookshelves it's the weight of the books resting on there for years the starts bending the shelves 👍😁
is it necessary to use the "wall anchoring device"? it says so on the website product details. i want to put this www.ikea.com/us/en/p/billy-bookcase-white-s09017826/ on my ledge and prop it up using brackets, but not sure if that would work as the product details make me think otherwise...
Thank you for this review!! I’m new to ikea!! But I collect superheroes, villains, comics,Lara Croft and stuff like that. I really been looking for something with depth and stuff (they really don’t make good depth anymore for the prices lol) but I saw the depth for this one. It looks about the same I got now. But lot more space. Honestly I’m excited about it but hoping black comes back in cause it looks great!!😍and is it heavy? Cause I need it upstairs and worried about the weight cause I’m not that physical strong lol. How is it now since you got it? Any pieces blending? Or change color cause one person had a bookshelf from wood and changed colors overtime 😳so just wondering lol.
Just got that Billy corner set, how do they want us to have multiple cases hook together on the side? I have a corner bracket but nothing else to adhere the two biggies on the end.
Lol, I’m really not, they are still going strong today. I know people have a think about ikea and how it’s bad, but I have a bunch of there stuff and it’s great, but wow 20 plus years that’s impressive
unless you kick you books in to store them, it will last you far more than 5 years. What´s the point on buying furniture that lasts only 5 years? For those who complain about the instructions... I'd say, get a brain.
Maybe not if your trying to build something of this quality, but have you seen how much wood cost right now it would probably be more than 10k if you’re trying to build a custom fit bookshelf. That’s what I was talking about. One that is built into the wall. Kind of like how kitchen cabinets are.

I have hade my bookshelves billy from ikea for 17 years and they are still good, and I have 600 books in them. I liked them
thats awesome, people just don't take care of things anymore. thanks for the comment 😁
It’s made from the cardboard backing stuff, so yes a little flimsy but it does the job well, still holding up well
Can they be disassembled for moving?
I bought mine ten years ago.
@@KivoxEnder what is the height of the shelves themselves?

Almost six years, over 2,000 books, and they are still holding up well.
Awesome!
Ikea instructions are so amazing. I've never gotten lost and it's so easy to understand.
I've always used wood glue when building ikea stuff makes them that little bit stronger especially if you are planning on moving them
Great suggestion! I feel that's the problem with ikea furniture. It's fine until you have to move it.
If you have little kids or little kids in your extended family that visit you- you really should bolt the bookshelves to the wall.

Good to know!
The other good thing is that they're notched at the bottom. There's space for the baseboard and the shelves are still flush with the wall.

We personally don’t use the wall anchoring devise but do have most of the bookshelves anchored to each other on the top or sides to increase stability
Do you know if you can swap the sides on this bookcase. More specifically, is it possible to make the left side the longer side?
You most definitely can, and you can add even more bookcases to it to make it longer or even wrap around another wall
