Yep, the old pizza cutter bias ply tires worked well together as a simple pick up truck. However today guys are dropping big blocks or LS Swaps in, fat radial tires up front for better traction in the corners may be more desirable when HP quadruples and power steering goes well with the higher performance packages. I too have a factory manual steering ‘66, factory 283….. the steering isn’t an issue with stock power and using the old pick as originally intended. I agree with you 100%
Perfect timing!! I just spent the afternoon at the boneyard pulling a complete unit from a 78' truck...in a snowstorm and 18 degrees. Thanks for the video, I already have the Captain Fab kit. Awesome job!
Could you please send me the name of where you purchased your steering kit. Also I would like to know what front end will fit my 1966 c10 short box. Thanks very much bruce mussmann
Hi Bruce, lots of folks just swap a Squarebody front end in it, 73-87 style. As for me I swapped in a an adapter plate to allow me to use a Squarebody steering box and I kept the factory front suspension. The steering box adapter I used came from Capt’n Fab. I see the world has copied his design and sell under many different names but I can’t vouch for those, only this.
@shortcutgarage awesome little how to, I am halfway through my power steering install I started last night, I did the Captain Fab bracket and am just waiting on my new steering box. The one I had I found out was for a 4x4.. so stuck waiting on a refurbed one. I mounted up the pump and all last night and was going to go to a local parts store for hoses but cant find them without special order. Any insight on where you picked yours up? Potentially a part number? I heard you say they were pretty cheap in the vid but didnt catch where.
Awesome video! My dad would like to put power steering on his 1963 GMC. Problem is I can't find pulleys for his 305 V6. And what about the idler arm? Some kits come with new arm and relocation due to a change in steering geometry.
I have a c10 -64 that i want servo on, i have parts from a 85 chevy van laying in the garage. Does someone know if its the same steering box as in the video?
Did you have a noticeable difference in steering after the conversion? I’ve got a ‘62, and would like to do the same, but would like to know how well it handled after the conversion. Keep up the great videos!
Night and day improvement!! Highly recommended in all ways, better in traffic, highway and of course, the parking lots LoL. One of the bar none best upgrades you can do dollar for dollar
Awesome! Thanks!! Should a guy try to stick with a mid-80s power steering pump and gear for the conversion? Asking since I haven’t seen much about using one from the 90s. Thanks again!
@@mattchastain1770 that’s what I did, I can’t say something from the 90’s won’t work but I knew something from 80’s would and it was available to me cheap so I did it
Only thing I would caution is drilling holes thru the shaft. It will remove too much material leaving thin walls on the shaft potentially causing a breaking point.
Yep. Captain fab bracket is sitting on the shelf, as is my new master cylinder and booster. Just waiting on the front disk brake conversion before I put it all on
I bought my 66 new when I came out of the service in 65 and found my truck steers so easy I never needed PS. Still driving it after all these years.

My 66’ still is manual steering- but I will upgrade soon .

Hope it helps man!
Does anyone know a website or ph number for Captain Fab other than 67-72C10 trucks?
Me too been there done That . 👍🏻
Thanks for the video. I'm picking up the parts for my 64 tomorrow.
That’s awesome. Hope it helps!
Super helpful, this is exactly what's in store for my soon to be ls swapped c20!
Awesome. Good luck. Great upgrade
Steering box is,mounted but the K 6131 is,binding your went together so easy my only threw 1 thread wheel turned all the way to the left likenyours,
First did your idea with the T5 transmission, this is next 💯
That’s great!!
Great job 👏🏿 😊
Thank you sir
Did you change the idler arm on the other side? Captain fab makes mention of a template for a 71-88 c10 idler arm.
Hey can you use a steering box off of a 4x4 frame for the 66 c10 or does it have to be a 2 wheel drive unit?
Can this be done on a 4x4 frame with the same brakets
That I don’t know. Maybe someone can chime in here

Thanks getting ready to do the same
Great upgrade. One of my favourites!
Great video. What rag joint did you use?
I actually used one supplied by Captain Fab, worked like a charm

Great job , I am going to upgrade my 64 Chevy truck. You said that you used a 87 steering gear correct?
Yes sir, same for box, hoses and pump
@@shortcutgarage thank you so early 80s trucks will work awesome.
That steering box looks like it was in the ocean😲
You said you bought I new pitman arm FA694 but you didn't use it !, I have a K6131 but don't seem to work
What the issue? Too long? Too short? Wrong taper?
Thank you for the information, I have a question will the steering column of a 80s truck fit a 60-66 Chevy truck?
Not without some fabrication and figuring out the ignition and turn signal wiring

Gotcha. Looking forward to giving this a go on mine one of these days.
Thanks!
Keep these videos coming
How you match power stearin?
Only thing I would caution is drilling holes thru the shaft. It will remove too much material leaving thin walls on the shaft potentially causing a breaking point.
Also very,very good video
WoW.. nice video.. Thanks
Nice one!
Thanks!
My 64 gmc came from factory with power assist steering
That’s cool. I think my 66 Nova had the same style
Where did you get the bracket
Captain Fab bracket, do a search on google. You’ll find it
Can I ask, is the steel template really needed? Second what year power steering gearbox did you use?
Was from an 87, I think the template was helpful yes, probably find one online I imagine
Can you send the template? An image?, im from argentina and we dont get that stuff over here
@@shortcutgarage Thanks for your help & Video
What year of steering box?
Any square will do, this one however is off an 85
@@shortcutgarage previously you said 1987. Is it 1985?
will this work for a c15?
You bet it will
@@shortcutgarage thanks!
What brand was the pitman arm?
Good job. What's next? Power brakes to stop that big v8?
Yep. Captain fab bracket is sitting on the shelf, as is my new master cylinder and booster. Just waiting on the front disk brake conversion before I put it all on
where can i find captain fab at?
Google it. He’s everywhere
Hi anyone successful installing on a 62 with a 5l 305 cdi engine
Use a center punch prior to drilling.
What year hoses did you buy?
1987....that’s what the box and pump were off of
Were can i find the template?
Captain Fab would have it, I’m up at work for another week but when I get home I’ll look, may have saved it. I could send it to you
@@shortcutgarage that would be nice. If you remember. Thanks
👌👌🔥🔥👌👌
Good job
Thanks! Still learning over here. Hope it helps.
those always leak and not worth the hassle, get rack & pinion steering
Where are you having leaks? Just a standard squarebody system, pretty reliable easily maintained.
@@shortcutgarage On the power steering, the seals do not last very long unfortunately.
