    This is an Auto Focus Review and Comparison between the Nikon Z9, Sony a1 and Canon EOS R3. All cameras have been updated to their latest firmware and we're using ALL native mirrorless lenses. To keep this review as controlled as possible we set up the cameras as close together as possible and record the same subject running. Keep in mind this is just one situation and it would be impossible in the real world to repeat an auto focus test three times.

    Great video. On a future Nikon test it would be very informative to see similar examples, maybe 2 Z9s, with one using the 3D tracking and one using the wide area like this video. Just to see where they differ in use.

    Now price, latency, ergonomics, durability, ease of use, color profile and lenses becomes more important determinant factor.
    I think nikon has positioned itself for a great future with the Z9.
    Kudos to nikon and Canon for catching up so soon regardless of the headstart sony had.

    • @earthlingtheaaron21
      @earthlingtheaaron21 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Biggest factor here is lens selection. Color profile doesn’t matter to anyone who knows Lightroom. Ergos are pretty much dead even with the A7riv style body but A1 takes it here because you can choose not to use the vertical grip which I often do. Ease of use doesn’t matter past week 2 with any of the cameras. Really at this point, I prefer Nikon’s lens quality over Canon. That’s why I have a Z5 to go along with my A1. That said, Sony’s E-mount prime selection is so great that I run I don’t even use a 70-200 for events. I use the Sigma DGDN 85 F1.4 and Sony 135 F1.8 instead and I get way better results using them. Neither Canon nor Nikon can offer me that.

      @mikni4069 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Durability are the same, all 3 brands uses magnesium alloy with similar approach for assembling, they all use similar parts and weather sealing the difference there are really minor. Colours are utterly unimportant when shooting raw, and in jpeg it’s personal preferences just as ergonomic is. This leaves us left with lens selection basically.

    This is by far the best comparison video made, well done!!! I know u may not like this, but the reality is that photographers want to the fewest photos taken with the best quality, that's the dream right, so I think hit-rate is important under the norms set in the controlled condition. Ok, now it's gonna take time manually working out the hit-rate, why not get a data scientist to do some machine learning processing. This way we drive the camera suppliers to improve the gear. Well done again in always lifting the bar!!!

    I'm a Nikon fanperson, I've dealt with Z6's eye AF in action by using single point and I've got good results, not as easily as with an R5 or A1 or Z9 eye AF doe.

    • @skyhawk637
      @skyhawk637 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I'm also a Z6 shooter - for dynamic shots, I use Eye AF but also I have the Activate Subject Tracking function assigned to one of the two fingertip function buttons near the lens base. That lets me quickly activate it and then select a target to track if Eye AF starts missing. After a little practice, it's pretty much muscle memory - and the transition is really fast without my eye leaving the EVF. Overall I find subject tracking on the Z6 to be more reliable at tracking consistency, especially at a distance. Eye AF gives the best focus results as long as it is locked onto the correct subject, so if the subject's eyes are clearly visible, I can quickly deactivate subject tracking and resume Eye AF. Seems to work reasonably well.

    Thanks for making this video Jared & Co. I probably won't own any of these cameras, but it's interesting to see ^_^.

    Great video. All the cameras are amazing at AF! However, much more impressed at how Jared didn't even seem winded at the end of all those shoots. I would have been collapsed on the ground panting loudly!!! LOL!

    I was waiting for this video when Z9 was launched. I don't see any significant difference between A1, Z9 and R3. The autofocus will no longer be a reason for a choosing a system over another. Awesome video. Good job Jared!

    Thank you very much Mr P. I’m very much looking forward to getting my copy of the z9 and it’s good to know you didn’t find any major issues- I can now rest happily in the knowledge of a successful “pre-order” button pushing. Woo Hoo.

    Good show Nikon. Well done for catching up. Now it's all about the trickle down baby! We need this tech in the Z6iii/Z7iii and Nikon needs it to win people back (or stop people jumping). Hopefully they can speed up the release cycle or upgrade the Z6/7ii firmware to get those cameras much closer to this in the meantime.

    Great video and congrats to the team for putting the test together. I think this shows how lucky Pro's and Consumers are these days, this tech in all three brands is amazing. Would love to see similar tests for animals, birds vehicles etc but its so refreshing to see that the gap is no longer there. As a Nikon owner (wouldn't say fan person as I believe myself to be fairly objective) I think many of the Z strengths are mentioned as also rans rather than being given large enough reasons to consider the system BUT now that the AF they have is there hopefully these will be discussed further
    I thought the canon's implementation was super interesting and you can almost sense the AI working; the Sony's stickiness is still amazing without doubt but as you would expect from the oldest body/implementation of the 3 my layman's eyes thought it was slightly behind. I fully expect their next iteration to jump forwards again exactly as it should be
    For Nikon in 2022 the main aim for them has to be trickle down. You're right about the fleshed out line-ups of Sony & Canon - which, lets be honest, comes from their R&D budgets being so much bigger (80-100x bigger companies) meaning they have been able to throw more at it in a shorter space of time. Whatever Nikon announce this year whether that's a Z8 or just the refreshes of the 6/7 it has to be a certainty that they will have this processor and system inside. Then hopefully (even if Canon/Sony release newer camera that take them a bit further forwards) the prosumer line up will be showing the same results as this test. Happy days for anyone in the Nikon ecosystem already and happy days for anyone not in any system who wants many of Nikon's other qualities!
    Thanks for the great video!

    Awesome video, good to see Nikon catch up with their AF and how well all systems are going up against each other. As much as I'm loving how the Z9 is performing, it's not what I need. I'm definitely on the wait for the Z8 which may be for the next year or 2 and the Z 200-600 that I'm hoping for the 3Q or 4Q of the year since Nikon just came out with the Z 100-400

      I'd make do with the Z7III with most of the Z9 bells and whistles, as it has enough MP for my liking. I'm also waiting on the 200-600mm.

      @@creamynessification as interesting as that may be the lack of resources across the board for all manufacturers won't let that happen. In addition marketing wise they need to let the Z9 run its course to make financial gain before we get at best a development announcement of the Z8 in the last quarter of 2022.

    I own a Z7 i. Eye focus AF isn’t as critical for as it is for others, but I can’t wait to see what trickles down and how fast it trickles down. I love Nikon’s s-series glass and I love the files that this camera produces. So looking forward to seeing how this tech shows up in futures prosumer and consumer bodies.

  • @truthseeker6804

    i have none of these cameras from the sample videos, theyre all really good. the big difference is when you get out of frame and back. the canon r3 is doing alot of work either to find the face or an object, the sony is basically relaxed at a fixed distance when you get out of frame and hoping you pop back at the same distance and can get confused when you dont, and the nikon is inbetween both, occasionally it shifts to background in search of person, occasionally it hopes you pop back at the same distance.
    in summary theres pros of each, and all would work perfectly for anyone.
