  • Ingrown toenails affect around 5% of people, and podiatrists are the best health care professional to treat them. The causes and severities vary, and there are different treatment options available depending on this. This is the 2nd part of a 2 part series of videos on removing an ingrown spike of toenail. The first video covered the whole procedure, and this particular video is a detailed walk through. Remember to watch the first video (rated 18) and then this one will make more sense.

Thank you! Glad your toes were fixed. We take our feet for granted and realise how important they are when we have a problem with them. Take care and all the best 🙏

Why did you opt to not perform a permanent procedure and kill the offfending nail section?

Hi, good question. It was the first occurrence of the problem for this patient and was caused by a spike of nail left by bad nail cutting. There are different causes of ingrown toenails but ones caused by spikes usually settle quickly once the spike is removed. The spike was removed which should return the toe back to its usual state. If problems persisted, I would then have suggested a partial nail avulsion. The procedure I performed should settle the nail in a few days, but a partial nail avulsion would take a few weeks to heal. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks.

How do you develop ingrown toenails? How can you prevent it in the first place?

There are a few different possible causes of ingrown toenails, like cutting the nail badly and wearing tight shoes. I will be making a video on this in the coming weeks, so look out for it! Thanks for the comment 😎

Yes, shoes that are too tight in the toe boxes will in crease pressure to the sides of your nails and encourage an ingrown nail 🙌

Wesring ill fitted shoes too tight.Toes press together .Not trimming the nail properly.U should keep cuticlestrim and pushed back so the nail can grow outward instead of growing into the flesh.Thats technique I do works for me.I dont think I could withstand the hurtful pain from an ingrown toe nail or finger nail.
