Forcing someone to sit while you stand makes you the dominant one and is a common manager/salesman trick. Keep in mind I never say down and watched this show. Gyp, as far as I know it's gyp, sits down to give Joe dominance in the conversation, and to make Joe feel at ease, just to take it back by standing taller then him when Joe's steps on gyps toes. Wich gives even more dominance in the conversation because it feels like gyp gave it up just to show how quick he can take it back deliberately.
Gyp was lighting a new smoke with the one he just finished, he was nervous AF. You're right about the tiny details in this show. The creative visual storytelling along with S tier dialogue are just a couple reasons this show was a damn masterpiece.
Joe setting the clock had a few different meanings I believe. First, he's pointing out Gyp cant even keep the right time, let alone take over Atlantic City and secondly he's letting him know his time is running out and that he's the boss
He does. Which is weird because he's not super intimidating, nor is he dangerously intelligent. He just has the presence - sicilian mobster. The guy you know would smile and nod, and make sure you got it later.
After watching this, I went and set the clock on the microwave in the kitchen and reenacted this on my girlfriend. She looked pretty confused as I walked out.
The problem is that Gyp tried to deal with Joe the Boss as an equal. Joe and everyone not Gyp knew the truth: that Joe was in a tier above Gyp in rank and intelligence. Joe didn't like his disrespect.
@Bobby Dillon Look at the way Joe looks at Gyp as Gyp goes to sit down... Joe was pissed before sure, but that bit of disrespect (not just sitting while Joe stood but sitting in the boss chair and propping his legs up like he didnt even have an important guest) was what really got him going. The Gyp gets angry at Joe instead of folding and gets in Joe's face......if joe didnt have so much invested already and so much more to possibly gain, Gyp would have gotten buck shot to the chest right then and there.
When Gyp sat down in that chair and reclined, like he's the boss, and left Masseria standing before him, that was disrespectful. I think that's when Masseria realized Gyp was no longer worth it.
Deqa Mohamud That certainly was disrespectful. But it's another thing to call someone in for a sit-down, like he did with Joe, and then show that level of disrespect. Even the way he eats cake , and moving his mouth to taste it , just perfect BOSS...
It was a long time since I watched the whole series. I forgot how excellent actors Boardwalk was full of. Ivo Nandi and Bobby Cannavale both gave arrogance a new dimension with their acting. I have to start from Season 1 again with lots of pocorn.
1:37 - Come to think of it that entire bit of the conversation is a mirror for the American attitude in the Vietnam War, they measured success by "body count" because in their minds that's what leads to victory and Gyp's racist point that you can't count the Blacks in Nuckys crew as 'a whole person' reflects an attitude prevalent in Vietnam called MGR (Mere Gook Rule). Masseria's point is an explanation of why America lost, they couldn't comprehend the nationalistic spirit of the Vietnamese to get rid of the invaders and just how hard they would fight to achieve that compared to the US troops (Gyps men) who were already showing signs of a lack of morale ("If I'm gonna catch it I'd rather be tight." "You want the boss to hear you say that?" "What the fuck do I care anymore?") but also they're basically fighting and dying far from their home because they're basically ordered to.
There should be a TH-cam video titled 'The problem with Gyp and how not to be a jerk in the underworld'. Always keep cool and calm, never let ur enemies and especially your 'friends' know what you are thinking, your anger, pride and self importance is your own worse enemy. Killing should be a last resort. If you want to operate in an established crime syndicate's back yard seek their permission and make them an offer they cannot refuse....and here I'm not talking Don Coleone's idea of an offer. Show respect even when you dont like the person, compromise when you have to and most importantly just dont be a Gyp
I’m beginning to wonder if Gyp was the show’s nod to Mad Dog Coll (even though he was Irish) who was only really known for his unadulterated psychopathy and met an early demise because he couldn’t stop making enemies.

Joe def one of the smartest, everyone thinking the blacks are irrelevant since they don't have rights or freedom but as he says 'KID... This is their home, they will fight' only other than Thomson, they understood black in numbers is powerful whether politically or soldier wise
"Kid, this is their home, that is why they fight", that's a true moment of genius in a time of racism!
Why do you bring racism to this sentence?
ok, that makes sense.
the fact that he had to explain it to you shows how much of a fucking moron you are
the fact that you need to spread hate in internet "shows how much of a fucking moron you are" and how sad you are.
I'm sure you didn't know that too but hey! let's hate! Hate is so cool! buddies beat shit out of you? go to internet and do some hate stuff!
MegaMapper your pretty dumb for that statement ..you deserve that response I don't agree on how he said it but I do agree what he said
Love Joe checking out the desk at 0:30
Masseria really had an emperor complex lol
Joe masseria was the fucking EMBODIMENT of a mafioso Don if you ask me
"This is their home. That's why they fight." Joe Masseria pretty much summed up the Israeli -Palestine situation in that one sentence.
And yet hamas (not Palestinians themselves note i make the difference unlike alot of pro hamas people when it comes to the Israeli government and citizens) gets support from Moscow who have been defiling Ukraine
2:40 Hey, I have that same clock! Just a bit more weathered. Sucker still runs and keeps perfect time, too.
You know shits gets real when Joe the Boss starts speaking Italian
I like that one scene when they’re on the beach and he says to Gyp…”Joe the boss? What happened to Joe the king?“ 😂😂😂 absolutely steals every scene he’s in! This one included. As a parent just makes you want to go to your kid and set up a scene like this just so you can tell them how it is
Hahahaha yeah he like So when's this "joe the king" guys supposed to get here, he's runnin a lil late isn't he?
The actor who plays joe masseria, his voice and mannerism reminds me of my grandpa
His voice , face, and mannerisms were just pure perfection.. I have said this so many times already.. Many other great Actors on that show, in their own right ..but this guy nailed this role so perfectly.. most intimidating. Even the way he eats cake , and moving his mouth to taste it , just perfect BOSS...
+TheBigFranco1: Who is your grandfather 👴 ?
Yeah right I'm sure your grandfather was Irish 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@aldixon1977 an Irishman I'm sure 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
"You no have Nucky Tomson"
joe the boss ? JOE The KING
1:26 Just realized Gyp is a compulsive chain smoker.
“Nawky Tomson.”
When I see Gyp, I can’t help but think of the scene he died, singing Barney Google with the goo goo googly eyes.
It was a long time since I watched the whole series. I forgot how excellent actors Boardwalk was full of. Ivo Nandi and Bobby Cannavale both gave arrogance a new dimension with their acting. I have to start from Season 1 again with lots of pocorn.
1:28 cigarette teleports from right to left hand
Basically "you are on my time now, get to work!"
Times up was the message
I love how Joe makes the point that "this is their home. That's why they fight."
When defending their homes and families, men fight a lot harder.
Imo Masseria as a character was the best actor performance in this show by far. There were several high level actors but this is one for the ages.
And that's why Masseria was BOSS... he knew the lay of the land and what the people in it cherished.
It's their home Gyp... thefuckouttahere!
Vietnam was a struggle against communism just like afganistan
You don't connect the too .you just tell history however u like it.
Vietnam fell to communism and misery.so did north Korea.just take a minute to look at south Korea.
I liked that clock. They should of done more with it.
My family own what appears to be the exact same clock.
John Smith that clock, wish it had been used more!
The clock has a real shine to it!
The cigarette Gyp used to light the one in his mouth got screwed, should have had a bigger role.
"Now you know what time it is". Subtly but effective.
That's the best cinematic Fuhgetdoudit I've ever seen.
Someone has to upload the joe masseria scene with him playing bocche and talking to Luciano and Meyer
+TheBigfranco1 it's already on youtube
+MaghoxFr I figured that out by now my comment was 2 years ago
And in those two years... how has your life changed?
+Yawg moth it's changed for the better? Lmao I don't know you random TH-cam guy
TheBigfranco1 now that it’s been another two years , are you doing well?
Loool Joe is in love with that suit of his.
When hyenas took over the pridelands
My favorite and Most Ganster line of the show. Letting gyp know he don't know what time it is lol
Joe The Boss: I thought you said King...lol
the actor who play joe the boss is the best very good
That is Phil's brother Billy! I heard somewhere that Phil did 20 years in the can!
The last gunman out was walking like Abe Vigoda.
damn...its sad that masseria had to break things down for him to get the picture....
When a coward is given power they can handle everything but push back
Just watching B.E. makes You wanna wear a suit...
I didn't much care for Massaria but I love that"Now you know what time it is" ....the fear in Gyp's face was great
I’m beginning to wonder if Gyp was the show’s nod to Mad Dog Coll (even though he was Irish) who was only really known for his unadulterated psychopathy and met an early demise because he couldn’t stop making enemies.
There was plenty of unadulterated psychopaths in that world at that time - you could say Vincent Coll, or Vincent Drucci, or any of a long list of real-life gangsters and torpedos. :)
@@davidemelia6296 True but most of those people were somewhat intelligent and calculating. Coll didn’t have any of those traits.
@@steelersguy74 I dunno man. Could have been, could have been someone else. Or no-one - just a composite psycho mad-dog gangster character they needed to start some shit.
The condescension just illuminates from Joe. It's awesome.
Whata da boss... ‘Now you know what time it is....little boy’... so cool
"tight," that sounds good. get the full effects of shock!
