Gyp Rosetti was the craziest Italian gangster/character out of any of the crime movies/series! A little on the stupid side but definitely a complete psycho 😮
Bless the writers & showrunners for letting Bobby Cannavale just go all in on Gyp & just take over the whole show for a season. It won him a well deserved Emmy.
I have to only disagree because Joe Pesci as Tommy in Goodfellows was alot crazier and it was only about a 3 hr movie. Gyp was in 10 episodes but Gyp is right up there my friend. Gyp had funnier and better lines though
I agree. He was crazier than the guy with the chainsaw in Scarface. Bobby got well deserved hardware for his performance. Gyp deserved his own prequel series.
Bobby Cannavale played this part to the T. So many people cast in this show got a big boost to their careers. Shea Whigham, Michael Shannon, Stephen Graham, and Jack Huston. Unfortunately Michael Kenneth Williams left us way too soon.
Michael Shannon and Stephen Graham had been around and were doing alright before Boardwalk Empire and would have done fine without it. Shea Wigham probably got a boost from his performance as Eli. Jack Huston's career has been about the same. And Michael K. Williams got his big breakthrough as Omar in The Wire, which ended 2 years before Boardwalk Empire.
Shannon?? ...that's probably the only guy who could have played Rosetti almost naturally. The guy's a "psycho by nature" - but he was already playing Van Alden, who ...btw... drowned his own partner in a river with his hands... This series is full of amazing people!
It's amazing that Cannavale won an emmy for outstanding supporting actor in a drama for this and an emmy for outstanding guest actor in a comedy for Will and Grace. Really underrated actor imo.
My uncle had a couple of those in his garage. The glass tanks had markings for the customer to know how much gas they were buying and so they could see that it wasn’t watered down or dirty.
Gyp is like Boardwalk Empire's version of Ralphie from Sopranos: a closeted masochist on a hair trigger who manages to alienate his friends with unnecessary killing.
I see the resemblance but he reminds me more of ritchie aprile.. hair line temper, voilent, sadistic and nothing of his personality to be desired. All 3 have the same traits but I thought gyp was more prone to voilence like ritchie where as ralph would laugh at insults but stab you in the back for the princible. All sociopaths though no doubt.
He's a mix of Richie and Paulie: short tempered, can dish a joke but can't take it, cheap as fxck, murders innocent people with zero hesitation, and in the case of Richie, done in by fragile hubris from somebody very close.
Usually most villians have just a tinge of some kinda redeeming quality, just to keep things interesting. Gyp Rosetti had absolutely nothing of the sort. But he was certainly unpredictable in a... predictable sort of way 😂

I am reminded of Joe Masareia's capo minister, 'Gyp' something. He built this Jetty. Ceerious and I saw it when we went to New Jersey. It even outshone Baltimore, where Sobotka lived. In the end, Tonino clapped him in the heart.
Every time I watch one of these Boardwalk Empire compilations, I gotta ask; how the hell did Mickey Doyle survive for so long? That man was constantly asking to get whacked. Yes, I know he's intended to be rather comical but within the internal narrative of the show, it's amazing nobody got rid of him early on.
