- Only 3,099 1966 Chevelles were assembled with the Special Hi-Perf 396 c.i. engine. This example was sold new in Ohio and moved to TN in the early 1970s. It has been hidden and off the streets since 1967. The impact the debut of the new SS396 Chevelle made on the musclecar market in 1966 is legendary and it set the tone for the rest of the decade.

When i was a kid i worked at a gas station . My boss had a 1963 impala SS 409 4 speed. It was a respected car in my area in 1963 .
Sad there was only 143 425 horse 409's during its run from 61-64? Of course that's a question Google answered so take that for what it's worth!
Impala 409 was and is still a mighty fine ride.
Father-in law had one , 66 Malibu with 327 Muncie 4 speed, said he could beat a few guys with 396's if they got there foot into it too hard , and really pissed off a guy with a 65 GTO 3 deuce, but in fall of 69 he traded in for the 70 LS5 , still has it , total blast to drive, wishes he had em both. Great video, awesome find ! Two things, one the nose probably got smacked because of the terrible brakes 66' Chevelle's had. Road tests of the day criticized the poor braking . There was a semi-metallic brake shoe option, but few knew about it. Two, the wheels, at least the front ones ,appear to be first year Kelsey Hays Magnum 500s. The first ones used a single bead rim which had a more drum like appearance. Compare it to the rear rim. Those wheels hold some value also. Maybe they are on there as a dealer installed item ?

There's a 67 350hp in my town, my friend owns it. He's had it since late 70's, bought it in high school. hubcaps, bone stock, low mileage sweetheart of a car.
67 was a weird year for Chevy. For whatever reason the L78 396/375 wasn't even listed as an option for the Camaro and Chevelle(but it was available on the downlow) and the L72 427/425 wasnt available at all in the full size cars in 67 like it had been in 66. An Impala SS427 got the 385 horse version with a hydraulic cam for its top option in 67. But the L78 and L72 were both right back in the brochures as RPO options in 1968-69. Always wondered why Chevy got stingy with their two solid lifter big blocks just for that one year
Sad condition for a car that was on the road for 1 yr. When I was in HS in the early 70's, some guys were driving these BB to school.
i was one of those kids, in 1978 i bought an aztec bronze, black vinyl top 4 spd 396 for $200.00, had to rebuild the engine, it was a monster

Thomas Jones jr if you can find a Chevelle today for $8,000 then you better buy it cause a 70 LS6 or L78 are going for over $100,000. The base L34 350 HP Chevelles are crazy prices too.

Great video Patrick. Love seeing these vehicles. In 1980 I was 16 years old and these types of cars in Kansas City MO where all all over the place (in a good way) I got introduced to a 1970 Nova SS with an L78 (square port) factory set-up and will never forget it. The guy I hung out with bought the thing for "600.00" bucks and it only had 60K on it. The car could not stay on the road. When my buddy did a value job on the car I got to see the rectangle port heads, I was hooked. A few kids had Judges but a lot of the big boys had 180 mile an hour Chargers/Cudas. Great memories and great video's.

The L78 396 was available in the El Camino in 66, I had a friend who had one new from the factory.

Patrick, I ordered and bought my first new car in 1966 and it was a Chevelle SS in Chateau Slate with black vinyl interior L78 , 4 speed, and the rear tail panel was painted black from the factory.
Yes , correct . I owned a 66 SS in marina blue and the rear panel was black .
A kid in my class had a '67 El Camino SS. The car was bone stock L-78. It had original air cleaner with the 396-375HP sticker, stock exhaust manifolds, M-21. Very fast...this was 1977!
Great Video again. I always believed the early and late 66s tail panels were black. In mid year they were body colored to save time and costs but customers and dealers complained and were painting them black then chevrolet started doing them black again because of the complaints.
I think the first muscle car was my Western Auto pedal car and it was a 64 falcon replica. I sure wish I had that little pedal car back today , it was a toy but it was still my first car lol. Another great video my friend.

My dad had a 66 Chevelle back in the muscle car era when he was a kid. I found it in the early 2000's, it had been turned into a tubbed out gutted drag car - cool it was still around.

Cool man! My bud had a Marina blue 66 with a 327/275hp 4 spd. Malibu Sport Coupe, wasn't the fastest thing around, but what a beautiful fun car. He'd pick me up @ High School before I could drive, thought it was the coolest thing around. Funny how these things bring such good memories.

I like to attribute the Impala to the start of the muscle car era. The building of the Chevelle was inspired by the Impala IMO and from my father who bought a brand new 66 Impala.
Patrick this is a fantastic car. Although the debate will probably never achieve resolve I submit that the first true "muscle car" and or the true grandfather of the concept is to me the 1955 Chrysler C300 with the dual quad 331 Hemi.

It's true, there will always be a bias toward a preferred marque. But commonly accepted that the concept of putting a high powered v8 into a midsize platform began in the early to mid 1950s.
I agree 100 %. Been saying that for years. Even one of the fathers of the Pontiac GTO Jim Wangers said in an interview that Chrysler really started the muscle car wars in 1955 with the C-300 and in 1956 the other 3 Mopar divisions(besides Imperial)released their own high performance models to compete with the C-300...the Dodge D-500, Plymouth Fury, and DeSoto Adventurer. Wasnt until 1957 that Ford and GM finally built some cars that could compete with those 4 Mopar's...the Ford's with the dual quad and factory supercharged versions of the 312 Y-Block, the Chevy's with the dual quad and fuel injected 283 small blocks, and the 347 cube Pontiac's and 371 cube Oldsmobile's with Tri Power induction
My friends dad has a 66 SS 396 4 speed chevelle in his garage that has been sitting there for years. Needs restoration. I saw it run once but it has rust around the fenders so I'm sure there is more rust underneath. Still an awesome car that I always peeked at when I'd go to his house

me up on a 68 SS once and tried to buy it , unsuccessfully . It was white with a black vinyl top . It had SS 427 badges a 4 speed and on the hood it had keyed locks instead of hood pins . They matched the door locks . This car originated up in New York . Have you ever seen or heard of the hood locks ? I know a lot about Chevys and have never been able to track any information about this option . I looked like it was factory installed .
It is entirely possible you came across a special built Baldwin Motion car. It is too bad you couldn't get it bought because you'd be sitting on a gold mine right now.
There were after- market hood key locks sold thru auto parts stores in the mid-late 1970's . You could have yours keyed to the existing
car keys. Guys were installing them for the "cool" factor and securing what parts were under the hood as it was easy for someone to steal
your engine parts. Wheel locks were being installed on your sport wheels. Early 1970's during our first " gas crisis " most people purchased

No such thing as a 68 Chevelle SS427. The biggest engine you could get in a 68 Chevelle was the 396/375 L78. Unless it was some kind of rare Baldwin Motion Chevelle or something because Baldwin Chevrolet was located in New York State. I've never seen one though

Lots of cars were repainted back in the day, due to all the frequent body damage from racing. They painted the rear panel body color, because they thought it looked better, or didn't want to bother with blacking it out again. I remember this myself, as I was there.

I've owned several unrestored SS396 Chevelles, all having the blacked out rear panel. Granted they were ten years old or older when I bought them, It was easy to tell the black was there under the trim from day one.
Bob Fontneaux all the Big Block Chevelle’s and Camaro’s had the back painted Black.
Also kept it cleaner looking as to all the rubber build up from burnouts
In 1971 I had a friend i Oregon City, Oregon who owned one of these. His dad bought it new from a dealer in Portland, same set-up 396 solid lifters balanced and blueprinted, had a pretty radical idle even when warmed up. I remember him, putting a $20 on the dash and if you could grab it before he got to 4th you could have it! He raced it at the Woodburn Drags a few times in Woodburn Oregon. That car would have been a monster with a automatic!
My great friend (Charlie Hymes from Osage Beach, Mo)had one of these waiting for him to come home from Nam, this thing was a beast, We put a 2x4 set up on it and won everywhere we went.
Patrick, I also grew up with these cars. I had a very unusual car, gold metallic,beige vinyl top, black i’nterior. 360 hp, Holley carb, knee knocker tach, power glide. As for the black on the back, my car was original paint, back was body color, but I saw many that were black when new. It would be interesting to know how many 360 hp, Holley, powerglide cars were built in 66
I have a Survivor 66 Chevelle SS with the Holley and Powerglide.Most 66 Chevelle's of the day were Powerglide.
To most, the '64 GTO is considered the godfather of all muscle. Iconic.

I have a 1966 ss car ive owned for 37 years when i bought it they took the 396 motor out of it and replaced it with a small block how would i find what horse power motor it had is a 4 speed car

In the late 80s a buddy had a 66 Chevelle SS 327 4 Speed in red. It had the black tail panel also.

My wife had a 66 with a 396 and a 4 speed w/Hurst shifter. Black interior w/ bucket seats. Purple Metallic and Crager SS wheels.
A friend told me that back in the day around 1970 he was racing her on C street in Anchorage heading uphill towards downtown. It was summer after midnight so no traffic and midnight sun for good visibility. So anyway, she was ahead several car lengths when they got to 15th which was level across the intersection and C continued on up hill on the other side, he backed off expecting her to do the same. Well she being very competitive kept on it and flew across the intersection to a 4 point landing on the other side. He said it was the coolest thing he'd ever seen street racing.
She ran that car for some years after until the engine went and sold it. Ended up regretting selling it but seemed like the thing to do at the time. That was before I met her in 79 or we would probably still have it now. I never even got to ride in it let alone burn rubber or any of that other fun stuff.
Have a buddy who bought one new sold it to his dad. After his dad passed he got the car back. Still has it, all original, complete.
I'm still looking for one I used to own. It had the words BAD LUCK spray painted on the underside of the trunk. It was primed dark brown. But it came from the factory BLACK, it was a four speed car and had black buckets and interior. I just wish I could see it one more time. The car was in Kentucky when I owned it

I agree the pedals are worn too much to have only been driven for a year. No mention of the mileage makes me question the fact that it's sat since 1967. It may be a rare vehicle, but there may also be some tall tells to go along with it.

Look at the rear glass and the rust around the glass. I had a 67 and did a frame off restoration, and I had to replace the metal. Rust was common in this area on these cars. Great find, though!!

A radical cam with some big tires on the back mounted on some Craiger SS wheels and what we used to call scavenger pipes would really be awesome in my mind. Back in the day (I'm of that generation) I knew someone who had a red one with a black vynle top set up that way. Unforgettable!
I can't afford it but there is nothing like seeing people find these cars and/or bring them back to their original glory.

Looks like another Packrat-Fink! A hybrid of the Pack-Rat and the Rat-Fink hot-rodder. Such treasures in the project stage just sit for years while we accumulate more stuff to fill in the garage around it until we have no room to work on it and no cash to finish it. I do the same thing!

well in high school i remember riding in the back seat of a worked over super stock 426 max w plymouth with 430 gears never forget it i wanted out ! 396 they were super fast to in the L78
Did we forget the Z16 '65 Chevelle? That to me is the Grandaddy of all 396 Chevelles which kickstarted the iconic 396 Chevelle's to follow.
They did semigloss the back on later cars. That's what they used say. Buick Skylark Gran Sport had that, too.
My grandfather had a 1965 black/black v8 impala as a taxi here In Finland. Not sure which engine. But it was fast! He kept it immaculate for 10 years he had it. That car REALLY stood out In our small 10.000 people town then. It was way cooler than anything on the road here.

The blacked out panel I feel was to keep a cleaner look with all the rubber build up from doing burnouts cuz it was a pain to clean the panel with all the melted rubber 😊
1959 Chev, 348 solid lifters, mild cam, carter AFB, four speed on the floor, 411 rear dif, all factory...was a muscle car, yougin.
The original muscle car is the 1955 Chrysler C-300. First American car with 300 horsepower since Duesenberg in 1928. Chrysler built the first 300 because they wanted to compete in the sports car market against the Corvette and Thunderbird but they didn't want to build a 2 seater so they took a Windsor body with minimal chrome and added a bunch of performance to it. The Chrysler solid lifter 331 Hemi with dual 4 barrel carbs was factory rated at 300 horsepower. A huge number for 1955 compared to the top V8's from Ford and GM. The 1956 300-B had even more power...two different 354 Hemi's with either 340 or 355 horsepower factory rating. It took Ford and GM a couple years to come up with anything that could touch the 300 on the street or on race tracks

My first car was a '66 Malibu and my buddy Dave had a '66 SS 396 at the same time so I definitely have a soft spot for this year Chevelle. Oh yeah, I'm a '66 model too but experts have determined that I cannot be restored economically. :P
Hey, the black in the back is a characteristic of the big block car. Chevy big block cars (those considered muscle cars) all had a black rear area, an SS thing..
I don't know for sure about the big block SS Chevelles, or Novas for that matter, having the flat black tail panel. I do know the '67 & '68 Camaro SS396 had it, whether it was an RS or not. The only other identification was the crossed flag "396 Turbo-Jet" fender emblems. The SS350 had "SS350" grille emblems, fuel cap, a horn button and the tail panel was the same color as the rest of the car.

I watched it atleast 3 times so far,but I don't think you said the mileage on her. The Godfather of Chevelles I can buy,but those early 409 Impalas, the early 60s 427 Thunderbolts, and Marauders ,or whatever Mercury had too,and certainly the 64 1/2 GTOs deserve an honorable mention, and in my camp,the 413 then the 426 max wedge and lest we forget the 426 Hemis race debut introduction in 1964,those cars may have just a little something to say about who's hat should be thrown in the ring for the official title, for true muscle car Godfather. Production wise I think the 1st street cars with the Hemi were the 66 offerings,so that's almost a tie there,almost. And i may've even missed a few too. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Lol, I love muscle car banter,it's like a sports team rivalry, it's all in good fun. Thanks again for another great find. There's a buddy of mine with a 66 4 speed Hemi Charger,drag car with only 1200 original miles on it. My uncle gave me his white 1966 Chevelle when I turned 16 in 1975. Unfortunately I didn't even have it 30 days after I let a 15 year old girl with no driver's license drive it thru our local park. As we were coming to a bend in the road she floors the has peddle instead of applying the brakes and slammed into a steel bridge totaling the car. That's one memory that makes me sick thinking about it. Had no idea in 1975 that a 66 chevelle would one day be commanding big bucks in the future. These cars were everywhere on the roads in the early to mid 70s.
It was in a big smash when still fairly new? I have working on a car for a customer right now that got a big hit in 1969 and very badly patched up Not so unusual for hi perf cars to wipe out in those days when tires,brakes etc were not up to the job being asked of them.And the Honda? a 750 4 ? It's a rarity too now and very very much sought after.

Well there was the max wedge Hemi cars in the GTO came out in 64, and I probably think those early Max wedge cars would dust these Chevelles but yeah I got no problems with it they're great car

I like the 64, 64 and 65 are two of my favorite years.
chevy had a 396/65 Malibu. From what I've seen it may have been some what of a promotion car. You also had the Impalas going all the way back to 61 SS models. they also had hipo cars on the Pontiac side. Chrysler and ford had hipo models too. Granted they weren't the mid size cars. Except Pontiac GTO, started out in 64.
They were full framed and everything bolted to it.

Chevy used to paint the back deck of the Camaro and Chevelles Black in the Big Block Cars.
The black rear area was there so to let it be known from a distance that there was meanness there. One did not have to look close for the badging in order to find out they were going to loose.
I know of another parked for yrs 66 chevelle ss396 with the blacked out rear panel . It's blue.
