  • Lighting multi-camera interviews can be tricky. When in doubt, light from overhead or cross-key. I thought the Sony a7S III & FX9 matched very well using these specific settings:a7S III: HLG3/rec709 (Black Level -15), FX9: S-cinetone. BTS was captured using another a7S III with no Picture Profile.

    I apologize for making my last comment all about me. You turned me on to the Seconic light meter and though it is a steep learning curve your explanations have helped me a great deal. The light meter is and always will be an important tool for making objective decisions and keeping things consistent. I am a big believer of getting things right in camera as opposed to trying to create the look in post.

    Nice to come across someone who takes the time to breakdown methods used in setup. I'm just here having a cup of coffee before heading off to a big suburban home for a lifestyle shoot today. Lighting systems for stills and video are quite similar. Cover weird reflections. Make sure subject doesn't look flat and balance the color.

    Great video that's to the point. Really appreciated the behind the scenes and detailed description of your process without any awkward jokes or filler in the middle. You radiate professionalism and have earned a sub from me. I wish the video was a little longer, but I look forward to more content from you - especially comparisons between these two cameras.
    I just picked up an a7SIII myself, but have never used an FX9. I'm really interested in the FX6 coming out later this year, as the a7SIII is all the image quality I need, but I'm still yearning for proper XLR ports, internal NDs, SDI connectors, and a deeper (not wider) body. The form factor of the FX6 looks perfect to me - but I wonder what direction they will take with the sensor. I assume the FX9 is higher-res, but that has traditionally lent the A7S series to be superior in low light in the past. I haven't seen many comparisons between that area specifically between the A7SIII and the FX9. If you had your say, would the FX6 take the sensor from the A7SIII or the FX9? The lower res also means lower processing which gets us that creamy 4K/120p in-camera... that's pretty tough to beat.

    Grip work is heavily underrated. The cutting of the reflections makes a huge difference in the final product. It is sometimes hard to convince clients on that end. It would great to know how you price your rate with grip/lighting!

    Long time follower first time commenter. Recently did the same set up with candidate interviews here in Indiana. I felt that all other TV set ups favored a camera-side key but I wanted a more impactful (in my opinion) far-side key. So, using an Arri 5 light kit, I set up 2 650s on c-stands with doubled gobo arms to keep the stands out of shot. Those gave me f5.6 read off of my Seconic 858. Then 2 300s bounced off a 4x4 foam core to give me an even f2.8 for fill. I used 2 150s for back lights. The 2 shot was 1920x1080 shot on an fs7 and the singles were shot at 4K on fs5s. I shot 4 k because at 800ISO (with the black bg) the fs5s were noisy so down-resing to HD was my poor mans de-noiser. All in all I feel like I did a pretty good job. Of course there’s points I could improve on but having done this all alone (set up, shoot, edit) I think I did pretty well.

    You are really someone with lot of proper information. Mind blowing. However, one little question. How should we choose the lights,diffusers/flags and rigs before hand? I meant fixtures and numbers. Or we should have one general set which will work in almost all cases?

      I think about everything beforehand while I'm drawing up a lighting diagram- it really just depends on what I'm trying to convey. I'll pick fixtures that give desired color/output, then add modifiers depending on the scene.
      The great thing about Aputure's 300d is the amount of modifiers available as well as the tremendous output.

      Yes, just what I was wondering. That's an elaborate setup with a crew to assist. I imagine with the post-production work this was at least a few grand.

    I would love to know what the financials were for this shoot. What was the overall invoice, what did you quote the client, and what was the pricing for gear, lighting and assistants?
    It seems like this shoot is straightforward so I can't imagine the client having a huge budget for a crew and equipment of this size.

      They are part of a 6x6 Matthews frame. They snap apart and are easy to store. Since we're not using the full frame, we're able to use the two ends for two separate rags.

    Fantastic video. Super appreciated. Quick question: I noticed in the scouting photo, the talent was much farther away from each other than what ended up being the case on the actual shoot. While I think the far-side key looked great, you mentioned that you opted for that because of the distance between the talent. Would you have cross-keyed like you had originally envisioned if you knew the client would end up sitting closer together? Thanks again.

      The biggest factor were the tables separating talent; since I knew they were going to be in frame, I knew there would be a pretty large minimum distance in between talent. If the tables weren't there, I would've probably cross-keyed!

    What's the though process between choosing to use a C stand or 'tripod' stand (the big silver ones in the video)? Is weight the determining factor? Or something else to do with usability? I'm looking into buying some bigger stands and am not really sure what to start with

      Combo stands are meant for larger loads and can extend much higher than c-stands with much more stability. Most combos can handle 60-70 lbs while c-stands can support around 20.

    For corporate work I have 2 aputure 600d but I was deciding if I should get 2 Nova 300c or 2 aputure 1200d ? I like 2 Nova 300c because I can also use the RGB for music videos but I dnt know if I will need that extra light for my corporate work

    Interesting that you decided to bake in a color profile rather than shooting in Log. The benefits are obvious, I just wouldn't have initially expected it for a professional shoot like this

    Hello, what size lantern have you used? Smaller lanterns softboxes punch light more than bigger lanterns? Bigger ones will spread light on to a larger area but the projected light is less powerful?

    I am looking at that Boom arm right now for my Aputure Nova P300. It weights 22lbs and the weight limit of the boom arm is 25lbs. Pushing it and so I have two questions. 1) Is this the stand you used with it: Matthews Hollywood Triple Riser Stand with 4.5" Grip Head (15') 2) Do you feel the Boom arm is safe at max limit?

      The Nova might be a little much for the arm. Once you extend the arm and adjust the fulcrum, you would need a ton of counterweight. I might look into a menace arm kit, which might actually be cheaper.

      @@robchado Thanks. I was looking at the Matthews Triple Riser with a load capacity of 68 lbs. However you are correct, I completely missed the thought process about the counterweight at extension. I don't know a ton about grip equipment yet so I'll research the menace arm kit. Thanks Robert

      @@robchado Just looked at it :p I think the issue is the weight limits when you look at the stand capacity, the light, and the counterweights. It almost looks like getting a Matthews Mini Max Boom would be a more compact solution. It has a weight limit of 25lbs out to 8 feet so it should work. SMH, so many options :p

    Hey Robert I have a quick question. If you didn’t already own Sony lenses would you purchase the Sony FX9 over the canon C300 Mark III for corporate talking heads shoots?

      Depends on what's being rented in the market. That way I can supplement my rental income on top of corporate work. I get a lot of Sony requests especially for doc work, but a lot of corporate jobs tend to lean Canon. Another factor to consider is what your local colleagues own. That way whenever you're asked for multiple cameras, you can bring in cameras in a similar ecosystem.

      We shot in 4K. You can output a 1080p signal to a SmallHD monitor.

    Is it worth it? Do you earn big money from doing all this set up? I think professional photographers and videographers value the equipment a lot more than it needs to be.
