I'm going through some tough time and as crazy as for some it sounds... This song help me a lot. More or less I lost everything but stand up again but will never return again.
The 2 versions of this song truly express the Sabaton's principle of oppose war, honor soliders - the English version sings about the 30 years war in a very negative light, while the Swedish version immortalizes an unknown soldier and his forgotten peers. "Has man gone insane" is the most powerful line in the English lyric, while "Men vem sörjer mig?" ("But who'll mourn for me") is easily what makes most people tear up in the Swedish version.
For our none Swedish speaking friends :) "I look around and see my home disappear My time at home now feels far too short Only youth, hardly a man when duty called me If I get to see my home again, I do not know Among relatives from my village, I went out to battle And the world burned For the war it can Destroy a man I give my life for my homeland But who misses me? So see me as it A husband, a friend Father and son never coming home But who mourns me? Went out in battle for Sweden, was baptized in blood Out there, death awaits, not heroism In fields where relatives fall, no song is heard Challenging our destinies, once again Far from home Be baptized and die in battle And the world burned For the war it can Destroy a man I give my life for my homeland But who misses me? So see me as it A husband, a friend Father and son never coming home But who mourns me? "Guitar solo" And when my time has run out Who cares then? They are struggling Does a soldier get a dignified end? Get to sleep Disappear And never wake up For the war it can Destroy a man I give my life for my homeland But who misses me? So see me as it A husband, a friend Father and son never coming home But who mourns me?"
Ay, same! Var sjuk stämning! Tåg banan till Avenyn, sen hamnade vi på någon krog jag inte minns namnet på, som låg på Avenyn. Satt på uteservering, och folk där satt och sjöng allsång. På fucking Avenyn. AVENYN.
sadly I'll likely never see this song/version live and I've always wanted to see it. I'll have to leave Canada and go to a festival in Sweden likely to experience it.
This is one of the most powerful and emotionnal live performances i have ever seen from a metal or rock band. Only sabaton can perform this. France loves you
You would understand if you seen how Sweden is now, Carl xII an Gustavus adolphus would cry if the saw how it is now and many of us had family dying in these wars so it means a lot to a lot of us😢
It is sadder. The lyrics are about the individual soldier instead of the war in general. "The war can destroy a man. I give my life for my fatherland. But who will miss me? See me like a husband, a friend. Father and son who will never return. But who mourns me?"
I know this song is about a soldier’s experience in the thirty years war but it could honestly fit with any soldier, in any war from ancient times to modern day. That’s what makes the song so powerful in my opinion
I think that’s really the beauty - and tragedy - of this song. Every time I hear the chorus, I picture in my head film and images from the World Wars, of soldiers from various countries with their children, family, friends, etc. It’s definitely a powerful song.
When they come home, they can’t speak. The pain is too great to load onto their families. Sometimes, they’ll tell a trusted man. The stories are appalling.
@@pepaphantom I think of a single WW1 man hobbling out of a foxhole to his brother's corpse as the war cries of the bayonet charge grow ever louder... They will show no quarter...
The fact that the audience sings the entire thing with them, to the point where they can sing it undirected, is so incredibly powerful. Easily one of the most amazing performances I've ever seen.
being a veteran of the 1981 Kosovo war and the 1990 Bosnian war, I found something in this song I Can not describe. All I feel is the honoring the fallen. Hail Sabaton. Man of honor, that is who they are. My respects and all the love.
That moment when you're in the middle of the crown surrounded by Swedish but you don't understand a word so you just enjoy this moment of pure joy! Tack så mickett svenska! You rock!
I don't speak the language, and to be honest before I found this band, I never cared. I also didn't care much about history. This was the very first song I ever heard by this band, the Swedish version. I was already in a particularly rough patch in my life, and then I found this randomly. I broke down. I could not understand a word of it, but it crushed me that night. I've always believed music affects so many people because it's pure energy and that night, it could not have been more true for me. I searched everything I could about this song and band that brought me quite literally to my knees that night. I found so many more songs, about history, things I never knew. It was the beginning of my absolute love for them. My fathers side of the family was in the military, and I never really cared in the past. This band changed that. I can't explain it really, and to the average netzien, it likely sounds like the ramblings of a madman. I accept that. I wanted to say that Sabaton, you changed quite a bit for me that night and those going forward. Thank you. I hope one day I will find the courage and the means to see you in concert for myself. Best wishes to you and yours.
i feel you bro. its hard to put those feelings into words, when you experience something like this. glad to read your comment. i agree, music is some kind of energy and its harmonising when you find the kind of flow that you feel naturaly.
The reason the Swedish empire was so successful is because, as mentioned in the lyrics of the song, the soldiers knew and fought for eachother. Not for the king, even though he was a formidable man. These were men from villages who fought among other men who probably went to the same church as they did every Sunday. Sweden only had 1 million inhabitants at this time.. the power of friendship. "Among kinsmen from my village i left for battle" this song is so damn powerful and historically accurate.
I can't even begin to imagine how awesome it must be to be a rock star and see that amount of lighters/phones in the air... Epic and beautiful. Sabaton, don't ever quit. If you do, you'll answer to me.
I actually have a few of their songs in my History class as opinion pieces. We haven't gotten to them yet, but I am pumped to here what the kids think.
You're just like my History teacher he introduced Sabaton too us in 9th Grade most my classmates didn't liked it because it was Power Metal but I loved it and was a great way to teach history and because of him I loved Sabaton ever since.
Yes but this song is very much also about the finnish soldiers who so bravely fought for the swedish empire. Remember that finns and swedes have in every war always fought side by side, but never against each other!🇫🇮🤝🇸🇪
Dear Sabaton, I will attend your concert in Cologne in November 2025 with my 7 year old son. He is a huge Sabaton Fan, just like myself and his favourite song is En Livstid i Krig. So I was hoping you could put that song on the playlist for that concert. You would create a wonderful memory for a young metalhead!! Looking foward to the concert!! Prost
@@millanoire I disagree partially. down here In NZ/Aussie we have a huge culture of revering our fallen heroes because they fought to keep us safe. Yes, they were victims, I don't disagree there, but they are heroes and should be treated as such. Heroes
That has got to be the most sensational and humbling moment to be felt, to see and hear all of those people singing your song, the energy must have been amazing there
I was there, one of the most powerful events I've experienced. Not only being there, but also sharing it with all those there. We were one at that moment, somewhat an intimate feeling. Having the ability to relive that moment through this videos is also awesome but the real deal can never be forgotten.
Alright... Danish man here.. Sabaton is my fav. band.. Sabaton is the freaking Goat, and this song EVEN THO IT IS IN SWEDISH.. I love it.. Master piece. Many hugs from Denmark.
They say they glorify war, they say they are Rasist, but they really just write about human history. This song is a good example. Their singing about family members who doesn’t comeback after wars. And how war can destroy a human. For me this doesn’t sound like glorify war. It sounds like true music 🎵🤘❤️
To be clear: IDIOTS say that Sabaton glorifies war. IDIOTS say Sabaton are racists. Anyone who actually listens to the songs and knows about this little thing called CONTEXT knows that they're simply singing about history and trying to make those songs have an impact.
@@Mowraq They've been barred from performing on some countries in recent years because of some songs that have been improperly considered to be glorifying war crimes.
They don t glorify war, the sing for all fallen soldiers in history. All their songs are about battles and the men who went through them. War exist since the tribe try to beat up the next one eons ago. At the end it is always a human tragedy, and they sing about that.
I wish that one day I will be in the middle of all these swedish guys, hearing them singing in a language I absolutely don't understand, but crying because of all the emotions this song gives me. Thank you so much Sabaton.
For any potential history buffs out there (Who might be interested in Swedish history) to have some context to all of this. During the time period this album is taking place, the common people were incredibly poor. I'd guess that an aprox 90-95% of the SWE-population were farmers, farmhands or indentured servers of various forms, people outside of the wealthy elite had very little power and democracy was hardly conceptionalized at all as the monarchy and church held most of the power. People were overburden with taxation as many of the Swedish kings waged wars which forced many young men who had only just started having some leverage in their own homesteads and farms out to die in wars they had very little to say about at all, many of them hardly ever even reached the battlefields at all since a lot of the war camps they were assigned to were raging with various diseases. So I find a very deep poetic meaning in this entire album when I have the history to compare it to, Sabaton indeed sparks the interest to dig deeper into history with such a way of making history live through their music. Tack för allt er fenomenala arbete med musiken, vi ses i Februari i Huskvarna.
I know some people have already posted translated lyrics. I'll try to offer some with more sense for meaning than the direct translation can offer. Hopefully it will be useful. :) I'll add (some text within parenthesis), for things that the swedish lyrics imply, but does not actually spell out and _(some annotations in italics where I think an elaboration or explanation is warranted)_ I look back and see my home disappear (in the distance) My time at home now feels way too short Merely (a) youth, barely a man when duty called me I don't know if I get to see my home again _(the swedish version is backwards to this; 'If I get to see my home again, I know not', a more archaic way of speaking)_ Among (friends and family) of my village I went to battle _('fränder' is an archaic swedish word encompassing both friends and family, with the friends implied to be as close as family)_ And the world (was) burning Because the war can _('Kriget' translates as 'the war', 'krig' is 'war'. Swedish uses ending suffixes instead of the prefixes usually used in english to distinguish general from specific)_ Destroy a man I give my life for my homeland _('Fosterland' technically means 'land of my birth', but the modern meaning is homeland)_ But who (will) miss me So see me as A husband, a friend (A) father, (a) son, who never will come home But who (will) mourn me? _(Here I would say 'den' should be omitted for the english translation. The literal translation would be 'it', a more contextual translation would be 'one', as in "So see me as one - a husband, a friend". However, in practical terms 'den' is just used to make the lyrics rhyme in swedish and can be omitted without any meaning getting lost.)_ (I) Went into battle for Sweden, (and) was baptized in blood Out there death awaits, not bravery _(bit tricky here 'hjältemod' is closer to 'bravery' or 'heroic bravery'. Heroics would be 'hjältedåd' or 'heroic deeds')_ In the field where friends and family fall, no song is heard _(military term, 'i fält'/'in the field' means not in the barracks/home base, not always a literal field of grass or battlefield)_ (We) go out (into battle) against the odds, one more time _(Tricky last line. Literally it's "we challenge our destinies, once again" but in swedish to "utmana ödet" implies doing something stupid or foolish, implying that they go out into battle again despite it being a stupid thing to do, implying further that the fighting is hard and/or things are not going very well for them.)_ Far from home _(background chorus):_ (We are) baptized and killed in battle _(Combined with the the line about destiny/odds in the preceding verse, and the far away from home sung by Jocke immediately before, "Döpas och dö i strid" implies that getting baptized in blood and then getting killed is what they can expect, or are expecting. Hence the lyrics of the refrain about how war can destroy a man.)_ And the world (was) burning Because the war can Destroy a man I give my life for my homeland But who (will) miss me So see me as A husband, a friend (A) father, (a) son, who never will come home But who (will) mourn me? And when my time has run out Who will care then? They fight on Will a soldier get a dignified end? _(The literal translation is 'worthy end' but the meaning is 'dignified end')_ (Be) Allowed to fall asleep Fade away And never wake (up) _(The implication here is the soldier questioning if any of them will ever be allowed to die a peaceful death, because the war is raging on with no end in sight.)_ Because the war can Destroy a man I give my life for my homeland But who (will) miss me So see me as A husband, a friend (A) father, (a) son, who never will come home But who (will) mourn me?
I would applaud you if you could hear me for your good efforts , only nitpicking I could find was about ödet. In my humble opinion the line "don't tempt fate" could replace utmana inte ödet. And in this case it would be "We tempt our fate's , yet again" As in they are aware you shouldn't , but yet they still do.
The swedish version is more emotional, ever, I think.... As a French Patriot, i became a swedish patriot listening the swedish version... BTW, i like sweden since more than 35 years for multiple reasons, so, this is not surprising ;p)
As a lowly American who doesn’t speak any other language, this song delivers a powerful message that can be felt. Music is truly unique in being able to convey emotion which goes beyond language, country and even time.
Real music and raw emotion is clearly understood, no matter the language. The feeling is so strong, regardless of where you call home. Respects and thanks to Sweden and Sabaton, from your 🇨🇦 friends and brothers. ✌️
I'm a native English speaker (from England). Listened to this for the first time months ago and it hit so much harder than the English version, so much so that I decided to start learning the language. I'm so glad I did, because this song rings forever true about the reality of war.
I am Swedish and I learned English from listening to music so I bet it works the same the other way around 😉 can recommend music if you want just say what you listen to and I will try giving some easy listening where the words are clear.

I was there on the 14th to see it live. My first concert and I just have to say, this song hits you right in the heart when you see it live. It would be worth going just for this song alone. The emotions you feel listening to this is genuinely not rivaled by anything.
I am a soldier for my country. After looking up the lyrics i was in tears. If I ever fall in combat i want this to played at my funeral. Also hand out the lyrics for the people there so they understand why i did this. Sabaton after seeing you live as well i was amazed. Thank you for the music and never give up.
Whenever this song is sung in Sweden is just breathtaking. Every one in the audince singing in reverence of their ancestors who fought and bled for their King, Country and Religion all those centuries ago.
To my nordic brethren from a Scot, you are as much a part of us as the english, it may not make great tv or music but I know I myself and many others will always be there for my nordic brothers
hi I'm a Christian and right now I have fallen into sin of lust. Listening to this song comforts me because I imagine myself carrying the Cross walking my body beaten by the enemy and then dropping my cross and fallen to the ground and can't get up since I'm weak right now... but then Jesus Christ appears Infront of me and carries me up to my knees and my cross back to me reminding me that he's always there
5:32 biggest goosebumps. My proudest moment of my life was to return back to civilian life after service to have a coffee with my father who also served a generation ago.
This song resonates so strongly with me as a Swede. Russia's aggressive physical and verbal threats in the last 10 years against Sweden, my home, have made me realize that there is so much I care about more than my life.
I look around and see my home disappear My time at home now feels far too short Only youth, hardly a man when duty called me If I get to see my home again, I do not know Among relatives from my village, I went out to battle And the world burned For the war it can Destroy a man I give my life for my homeland But who misses me? It's not only an extra flavour. Lyrics of this song are much better, more heartbreaking in swedish than in english. English lyrics are about religion as a one of the reasons of war. Swedish tell about soldier's pain.
This. This is the essence of what Sabaton do. They honor the fallen by not only singing of them, but teaching people what they went through... Then teaching them to sing along in the heavy metal choir that honors the countless fallen! No other band will ever come close to this for me, I think. Sabaton are the embodiment of all that music can and should be: hopeful and hyped, sorrowful and respectful. A thousand thank-yous to Sabaton!
This song bring tears to my eyes... This lyrics are so powerfull and meaningufll! Sabaton, keep composing great and powerfull songs like this one. Salute from Brazil!!
Sabaton does not glorifying the war...they just love the soldiers, not those who commit atrocities, but those who think about home and loved ones, those who died holding a photo of a kid, wife, family, girl, in their hands, those who gave everything and got nothing in return, not even a descend burial...You got to love these guys...
4:39 this part honestly gives me chills, you have very deep lyrics, an amazing singer, an amazing audience and it all adds up to create one of the best moments in metal history.
I can only imagine how breathtaking this would've felt for the band just looking at it feels so surreal. That the crowd sang just about the entire first verse alone would make me break out in tears. The more I listen to the song in Swedish, the more enamored I fall for it. The English version is good but Swedish is by far the best form for this song! Thank you Sabaton for making this truly Awesome song. And thank you crowd for singing it!
I don't know any Swedish but i sing it in my head. And the crowd singing alone.... goosebumps all over me. I love Sabaton 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪 With love from Holland🇳🇱
THIS IS IT! The song that truly got me writing my novel's backstory, a 40 year long war between 2 massive empires that engulfed their world, a pure war for survival of both sides, some being struck down immediately while others watch as their friends fall around them. Destruction, Blood, Sweat, Tears, and Death. 40 years and Millions Dead. Can't get enough of this song. Thank You guys for literally EVERY! SINGLE! SONG! you've ever done and will hopefully continue to do into the future.
This song carries a lot of sentimental value to me. Just 3 min away from were i live now is a farm were one of my ancestors lived. He fought for king and country through the entire 30 year war then lived until he was 89 years old. I cant even for a second imagine what his life was like... A true inspiration for me despite barely not knowing anything about him.
I like German language for being epic asf and Swedish feels the same way. I like Sabaton songs a lot, but "En livstid i krig" one of the few that causes me goosebumps especially when people sing lines. That's a trully magnificent. I hope I'll get to your concert in Russia some day because I asemed that I opened Sabaton songs for myself only in 2020 at covid lockdown. Looking forward for Your concerts in Russia especially if Oleg from Radio Tapok will perform with you. 🇷🇺🤝🇸🇪
I'm from Mexico. Listening to metal suddenly this song came out. I had never heard of Sabaton. The music captivated me, but when I turned on the English subtitles I was deeply moved. What a song, epic !!! Now I’m a Sabaton fan
I did a presentation at my school for our history class last Friday, I spoke about the swedish great power era (I'm swedish) using the carolus rex album and went through each song on the album and explaining what they are about. I wanted to show the class one example song that they could listen to and I chose to show this video between 01:00 and 02:18 so thank you Sabaton!
The way the crowd sang the first verse... One of the most inpressive things I’ve ever heard. Would absolutely learn Swedish, just to be able to sing along.
My dad has spoken swedish to me my entire life, even though we live in Finland. Always, no matter the ocasion he speaks swedish to me and as such I associate the swedish language with him and to hear a song sung of soldiers being sent into a meat grinder never to see their families again.... It hits a completely other way especially with the current political situation and him still being the age where he would be called to service for his homeland
It doesn't matter if this song is live, studio, in English OR Swedish this song really tugs on those emotional heart strings and brings to light how miserable, sad, and destructive war is and is easily one of not just my favorite songs off of Carolus Rex but out of Sabaton's entire discography!
Here is a letter from Wilhelm von Schwerin who was a 15 year old Swedish soldier who fought in the finnish war in 1808 "Kronoby Headquarters 17 September 1808" "My beloved parents!" "i have not since Grisslehamn found any place I could write from, for the post office always follows the headquarters, which is far apart from the army. Since we went and drifted on the lake until the end of August, we finally got to land in Kristinestad. The disembarkation went in one day, and at night we marched a mile to Lappfjärd. We lay and slept as best we could, when the alarm went off and I had to leave my comfortable bed. The deal lasted 5 to 6 hours, but no battery was allowed. The Russians were defeated, and we pursued them all the way to Ömossa, 20 km from Lappfjärd. There was a halt, and Lieutenant Colonel Drufva was detached with 500 men and 2 cannons under my command to remain here with orders to fight to the last man. Here was a pitiful location! The people saw themselves 20 miles apart from the army, stationed against the main force of the Russians. My people were sad, they saw the uplanders being released every evening, but for nine days they had to lie incessantly on the field guard and, together with me, were soaked with heavy rain for many nights and days. Nothing but my tender care for them could keep them from complaining, I always and gladly use my excess money of my allowance for their benefit. 9th in the morning we were violently attacked. I would now for the first time go into the fire myself, I would bring my people there for the first time, and I would with 2 cannons defend the place against the enemy's infinite number of howitzers and cannons. The first was not difficult; I immediately took my cold and remained cold. The second was worse. My people were in the fire for the first time, they looked for the bullets and ran behind just at the most crucial moment. I could not run after, but did myself 5 man service at the cannon. When the business had slowed down somewhat, I went almost exhausted after them, imagining their cowardice, then they all sprang forward like lit candles each in their places. Here people fell like grass. Now it was time. The Cossacks charged at my exposed cannons 3 times, threw their darts, but I met them with canisters, and they withdrew. In this way, we continued the business under a constant fire for 5 hours and retreated 1 1/2 miles, where content was made. Here came Drufvan with the whole corps of officers, embraced me, thanked me for saving them. The people cheered and wished me a lasting welfare. Soon we had a battle, the longest and bloodiest here in this war. This stood at Oravais and lasted from kl. 6 in the morning until kl. 11 in the evening. I entertained the enemies alone until dinner by firing my cannons, when at this time I was wounded. They were just about to drag away when one of my men told me that I was run over: I scratched myself, sat on a cannon horse, for my own was shot, let the people cheer, put me first in the lead, shouted comrades, follow me: I commanded march, march and struck through the enemy, who greeted me with a bayonet. I got 3 bullets in my coat, and many of my people were stabbed. Generals Adlercreutz and Vegesack thanked me most sincerely. In the morning I would go out and reconnoiter, when I got a bullet through the hat, from which I fell over. I discovered the devil behind a rock, took the rifle of a soldier and shot him. In the evening towards dusk I got a new injury, they dragged me to the nearest village, where I lay until the enemy's bullets came in through the windows. I would have stayed, if not for a noble officer I had not yet gotten to know threw me on his back and we happily got away. Our loss is probably 2,000 men and 30 to 40 officers. General Aminoff, the generous man, picked me up, and now I'm pretty well." "Goodbye, beloved and worshiped parents and siblings! Live always well, wish you always affectionate son, brother and friend." "Wilhelm" it ended with "The general is in such a hurry that I have no time to enumerate the number of lost officers of the Upland and Westmanland regiments." Wilhelm passed away 27 september 1808 at an age of just 15, 10 days after this letter was written
When life is beating you down into the ground, find a song like this, raise up to, carry on, no matter what burdens are on your shoulder it may be:regret, sorrow, heartbreak, financial, or depression. Music can be the little thing you need to push through. For me this song is my goto song when life is giving me hell, and only path is forward and through it. Emotional, inspiring, loving and in plain text, an awesome song. 💯
I swear, every time En Livstid i Krig, Konungens Likfärd, or Ruina Imperii begin to play, I have to fight back tears and everyone around me is super confused.

I don't speak a word of Swedish but this version sounds way better imo. And sadder, for some reason.
i thought exactly the same, but i acctually want to learn swedish...
If you watch a video with English subs the lyrics quite a bit sadder
The english version sings more about the war in generall while this version follows a soldier in this war which is more personal and sad in a way
Go Google the translated lyrics man...
It is sadder. The lyrics are about the individual soldier instead of the war in general. "The war can destroy a man. I give my life for my fatherland. But who will miss me? See me like a husband, a friend. Father and son who will never return. But who mourns me?"
I love how the opening verse is sung by the crowd alone
Goosebumps
tbh they could've just sung the whole song
They all stopped dead in their tracks when they heard them and just enjoyed it and it was so wholesome
I'll always love that
I know this song is about a soldier’s experience in the thirty years war but it could honestly fit with any soldier, in any war from ancient times to modern day. That’s what makes the song so powerful in my opinion
I think that’s really the beauty - and tragedy - of this song. Every time I hear the chorus, I picture in my head film and images from the World Wars, of soldiers from various countries with their children, family, friends, etc. It’s definitely a powerful song.
@my toughts that’s a good point
Brothers in arm, the same sacrifice, from the times of our forefathers till now.
When they come home, they can’t speak. The pain is too great to load onto their families. Sometimes, they’ll tell a trusted man. The stories are appalling.

The fact that the audience sings the entire thing with them, to the point where they can sing it undirected, is so incredibly powerful. Easily one of the most amazing performances I've ever seen.

How are you today? Hope your patch is easier today :)

I've actually never heard anyone say that or seen that in the comments but I didn't exactly search for it.
@@Mowraq They've been barred from performing on some countries in recent years because of some songs that have been improperly considered to be glorifying war crimes.

Love from Sweden
Imagine the validation of writing a song and having a stadium full of people know it word for word and sing it loud and proud.
Well explained, why the song and text is so impactful for people who know the history of that era in Sweden!
I know some people have already posted translated lyrics.
I'll try to offer some with more sense for meaning than the direct translation can offer. Hopefully it will be useful. :)
I'll add (some text within parenthesis), for things that the swedish lyrics imply, but does not actually spell out and _(some annotations in italics where I think an elaboration or explanation is warranted)_
I look back and see my home disappear (in the distance)
My time at home now feels way too short
Merely (a) youth, barely a man when duty called me
I don't know if I get to see my home again _(the swedish version is backwards to this; 'If I get to see my home again, I know not', a more archaic way of speaking)_
Among (friends and family) of my village I went to battle _('fränder' is an archaic swedish word encompassing both friends and family, with the friends implied to be as close as family)_
And the world (was) burning
Because the war can _('Kriget' translates as 'the war', 'krig' is 'war'. Swedish uses ending suffixes instead of the prefixes usually used in english to distinguish general from specific)_
Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland _('Fosterland' technically means 'land of my birth', but the modern meaning is homeland)_
But who (will) miss me
So see me as
A husband, a friend
(A) father, (a) son, who never will come home
But who (will) mourn me?
_(Here I would say 'den' should be omitted for the english translation. The literal translation would be 'it', a more contextual translation would be 'one', as in "So see me as one - a husband, a friend". However, in practical terms 'den' is just used to make the lyrics rhyme in swedish and can be omitted without any meaning getting lost.)_
(I) Went into battle for Sweden, (and) was baptized in blood
Out there death awaits, not bravery _(bit tricky here 'hjältemod' is closer to 'bravery' or 'heroic bravery'. Heroics would be 'hjältedåd' or 'heroic deeds')_
In the field where friends and family fall, no song is heard _(military term, 'i fält'/'in the field' means not in the barracks/home base, not always a literal field of grass or battlefield)_
(We) go out (into battle) against the odds, one more time
_(Tricky last line. Literally it's "we challenge our destinies, once again" but in swedish to "utmana ödet" implies doing something stupid or foolish, implying that they go out into battle again despite it being a stupid thing to do, implying further that the fighting is hard and/or things are not going very well for them.)_
Far from home
_(background chorus):_ (We are) baptized and killed in battle
_(Combined with the the line about destiny/odds in the preceding verse, and the far away from home sung by Jocke immediately before, "Döpas och dö i strid" implies that getting baptized in blood and then getting killed is what they can expect, or are expecting. Hence the lyrics of the refrain about how war can destroy a man.)_
And the world (was) burning
Because the war can
Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland
But who (will) miss me
So see me as
A husband, a friend
(A) father, (a) son, who never will come home
But who (will) mourn me?
And when my time has run out
Who will care then?
They fight on
Will a soldier get a dignified end? _(The literal translation is 'worthy end' but the meaning is 'dignified end')_
(Be) Allowed to fall asleep
Fade away
And never wake (up)
_(The implication here is the soldier questioning if any of them will ever be allowed to die a peaceful death, because the war is raging on with no end in sight.)_
Because the war can
Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland
But who (will) miss me
So see me as
A husband, a friend
(A) father, (a) son, who never will come home
But who (will) mourn me?
Thank you :D
I would applaud you if you could hear me for your good efforts , only nitpicking I could find was about ödet. In my humble opinion the line "don't tempt fate" could replace utmana inte ödet. And in this case it would be "We tempt our fate's , yet again"
As in they are aware you shouldn't , but yet they still do.
Underrated comment
I love this. My thanks.
Crazy how this song has different meanings in English and in Swedish, and they both hit hard.
As a man who served in the army, been training for killing a man in the battlefields, this Swedish version lyric hits me even harder.

But who mourns me?
Went out in battle for Sweden, was baptized in blood
Out there, death awaits, not heroism
In fields where relatives fall, no song is heard
Challenging our destinies, once again
Far from home
Be baptized and die in battle
And the world burned
For the war it can

Do you guys play at weddings?
Edit: Tommy's quitar solo at 3:39 is just beautiful.
Thats actually a very good question Xd
I am seriously considering asking these guys to play at my 30th birthday! I wonder if they'll do it if the price is right...
@@TheMmus whats the price! Of birthday!?
Lmao, invite me please !!
@@Bushwhackerdk I chuckled when I read your comment with Joakim's voice in my head :D
I don't know any Swedish but i sing it in my head. And the crowd singing alone.... goosebumps all over me. I love Sabaton 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪
With love from Holland🇳🇱
Not even Swedish, but damn you can just feel this even more in the Swedish version
ikr no problem even if you don't understand the lyrics
Same here. Sabaton gave me so much interest in Swedish history
Fan, det här är nog den mest patriotiska svenska låten efter HELA nationalsången! GÅSHUD!!
100%
I am 62 years old and just discovered this band! So proud of this band!

I'm from Mexico. Listening to metal suddenly this song came out. I had never heard of Sabaton. The music captivated me, but when I turned on the English subtitles I was deeply moved. What a song, epic !!! Now I’m a Sabaton fan
I’m a 27 year old Scottish woman who is sat in tears listening to this. I’d love to hear this specific version live one day.
When the crowd sing like this, you know you've made it
I did a presentation at my school for our history class last Friday, I spoke about the swedish great power era (I'm swedish) using the carolus rex album and went through each song on the album and explaining what they are about. I wanted to show the class one example song that they could listen to and I chose to show this video between 01:00 and 02:18 so thank you Sabaton!
This song is going to increase in popularity in the next days/weeks.
Tru 🗿👍
If the Russians come, I'll play this as we fk them up :)
Based
absolute TRUE !!!!!!!!
As the state of affairs goes it would be months
War is hell.
And even if you survive it, you live it forever.
"Only the dead have seen the end of war."
-Plato
And all along the shore
Where cannons still roar
They're haunting my dreams
They're still there when I sleep
At least,Sabaton transform those horrors into something beautiful to listen
You can hate war but don't hate the soldiers. They give everything they have to protect their countries
@@kurtnotafed4645 litteraly one of my favourite quotes of all time
4:40 is legitimately one of the most awesome things I've ever heard.
If I'm ever asked where and when I'd like to travel back in time, I'd answer... Gothenburg, the day Sabaton performed "En Livstid I Krig".
Same dude.
🇸🇪🇫🇮
It doesn't matter if this song is live, studio, in English OR Swedish this song really tugs on those emotional heart strings and brings to light how miserable, sad, and destructive war is and is easily one of not just my favorite songs off of Carolus Rex but out of Sabaton's entire discography!
One of the most epic performances of anything ever anywhere!!!
Here is a letter from Wilhelm von Schwerin who was a 15 year old Swedish soldier who fought in the finnish war in 1808
"Kronoby Headquarters 17 September 1808"
"My beloved parents!"
"i have not since Grisslehamn found any place I could write from, for the post office always follows the headquarters, which is far apart from the army.
General Aminoff, the generous man, picked me up, and now I'm pretty well."
"Goodbye, beloved and worshiped parents and siblings! Live always well, wish you always affectionate son, brother and friend."
"Wilhelm"
it ended with "The general is in such a hurry that I have no time to enumerate the number of lost officers of the Upland and Westmanland regiments."
Wilhelm passed away 27 september 1808 at an age of just 15, 10 days after this letter was written
When you're in a public transport and it plays in your headset is a real challenge
Konungens Likfärd and Ruina Imperii I can handle, but I’m never not at least fighting back crying loudly whenever this beauty comes up
i cry tears of joy everytime tour or an album is anounced. and soon my favorite history teachers are in my town. and yes i will cry like a soldiers wife wich man comes back home.
