Sergeant Stubby deserves his own song. Plz guys! One of America's greatest heroes during WW I didn't walk on two legs. He ran on four! Still America's most highly decorated war dog, and the ONLY war dog to be promoted to the rank of Sergeant for valor in the face of the enemy, and he single-handedly (pawed-ly) captured a German spy in the Argonne.
In 1916, 300,000 died at the sommes alone. My great uncle died there. In the whole war, 21 million were wounded, 10 million soldiers died, and 10 million civilians died. My grandfather was born in 1900 in England, and joined the French army at 15 as they wouldn’t know his age. I lived with my grandfather for many years, and during the night he’d scream and during the day there’d be times where he was back in the trenches. He and his comrades were hit with chlorine gas, and he was piled up with all of the other dead bodies, where he would have been buried alive had he not roused and made it known he was alive.
@@BestFriendsWhoLiveTogether And then in the aftermath the Spanish flu killed another 20 to 50 million (some estimates go up to 100 million) people between 1918 and 1920. They should also be considered casulties of WWI, because without this war and soldiers going to the battlefield and returning home to all over the world that flu would have been a very localized event somewhere in the Southern US.
Motorhead's "1916" was my uncles favorite song. He recently took his life due to PTSD he got in Afghanistan. It has hit my father and I quite hard. This has meant a lot to us. Thank you
This song is not a only a tribute to the soldiers of the great war, this is a tribute to all soldiers that fought, roman, carolean, spartan, French, british, polish, soviet, prussian and etc. Respect not only to the combatants of the great war, but to all combatants of any war, we may never forget.
From my family, two brothers of my sister disappeared during the Great Patriotic War, my grandfather returned, but his data is classified until 2035, the second great-grandfather was surrounded, but after returning to his own he was sent to the penal battalion, but survived and came home. We must remember the fallen warriors, they deserved it!!!!
I'm a combat vet, Iraq and Afghanistan. This brought tears to my eyes unlike any song you ever released before. Thank you, and please, never stop making the music like you do. All my brothers in arms deserve their stories to be told
Even though I'm not a US citizen, thank you for your service. Do you know Five Finger Death Punch? With your service background and appreciation of Sabaton, I think you might like, and they deal with a lot of the stuff veterans go through.
The moment the soldiers vanished broke me down to tears. We may no longer remember their names, but we shall never forget. Thank you Sabaton, and keep doing an awesome job.
The original song is Lemmy singing accompanied by a bass drum and a cellist. Very simple and very powerful at the same time. This arrangement takes nothing away from the original and adds so much depth to the story. I think Lemmy would have loved it.
Lemmy's version is Lemmy recounting what his grandfather told him of the Great War. Sabaton's version is a revision of that. It's a generation after Lemmy.
Yes agreed the end when it goes to the awful stats Motorhead should re upload theirs with that added ,then again theirs was if i remember not accompanied by an "Official video " they all came from You Tubers & Pathe news .Needs to be on a screen its so powerful & this version is beautifully polished
This hits so close to home. My town was one of those affected. From a population of about 80,000 a little over 1000 men joined up, mostly aged 16-21. Less than 500 survived the battle of the Somme. Barely 100 survived the war. When I heard Sabaton play this on tour... and the crowd were waving lights... I teared up as I sang with a lump in my throat. Thank you Sabaton for singing on behalf of the fallen. Thank you for singing on behalf of my Great-Great Uncle. 😞
Our small village had a population of barely over a thousand in 1914 and to see 153 names on our memorial was heartbreaking, I still can’t get my head around it, a whole generation of young lads with hopes and aspirations just wiped out 😢 fortunately my Great Grandfather was one of lucky ones, our memorial puts it into better word it reads ; GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS. THE STONES ARE IN OWS, IN LAND THEY WERE GIVEN, / ALL HAD LAIN AS ONE, FOR 60 YEARS OR MORE. BLOOD AND TEARS HAVE GROWN THE LANDS UNTIL ONLY MEMORIES REMAIN. THEIR DEEDS ARE READ AS HERO'S. ACTIONS THAT WERE TAKEN THEN GIVE NOW OUR LIVES A PURPOSE. WE REMEMBER. ALL MUST NOT GORGET, THE TOTAL SACRIFICE THEY GAVE FOR US. SO IN OUR RETURN WE MUST PLAY OUR PART ALWAYS REMEMBER, OUR LOVED ONES AND FRIENDS. UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN
My name is Michael, and I'm U.S. Marine vet that served in the mid-90s. I never saw combat, but I have family and friends who did. It really doesn't matter whatever flag, nation, or cause that your fighting for, ALL wars are brutal hell and ALL families are devastated when they get that knock on their front door (or phone call) and told that their loved one has been killed or is missing in battle. No politics here... just rememberence. All military personnel irregardless of nationality, sex, creed, color, and background who dies in battle is a fallen warrior in my book. That's how they should be remembered. Sabaton, thank you for mixing military history with metal. Your music is beyond awesome, and please keep doing what you're doing. May our loving God bless and comfort every family around the world who have lost loved ones in battle.
I just wanted to say a HUGE thank you sir for your service to America. In case you are wondering if I am a fellow military veteran, no I am not due to being mentally challenged and unable to serve but that hasn't stopped me from honoring the men and women who have served America's military and even more so for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and never got to come home to live out the rest of their lives in peace and raise a family. May God bless you, your household, your family and your car or truck. :)
@@SoundwaveX7 Thank you for those wonderful comments. Look, don't feel bad about not being able to serve in the military. Not everyone is able to join or get accepted for numerous reasons. The true measure of a person is their "character" not if they have military service or not. So remember that. Yes, also we must never forget those who sacrificed their lives in battle. Brother, again thank you. God bless you and your family as well.
I'm not speak English very well,I'm French, thank Boys for your beautiful message and for your Veterans for my freedom, all French now have big Thanks for the great nation United States Of America,we never forget the young men died for the freedom for me and my family. God bless the America;)
This song brings tears to my eyes. It is a hauntingly beautiful punch to the guts. Just like Christmas Truce, I come back to it. It is important to remember those who fought and acknowledge what that loss meant for their families.
This song is beyond rock music. This is pure art. I never belived that after Christmas Truce video, Sabaton will come with something more impressive. And still, they did it.
‘Clinging like kids to each other’ is such an amazing lyric, that whole verse is incredible. Also, as a kid from South Yorkshire, it’s amazing to see Sabaton acknowledge our county, and the Northerners who died at the Somme.
What an excellent tribute. Thank you for treating Lemmy's great songwriting with such respect and thank you for performing this song in Leeds for us last night. Very emotional indeed!
My father served in VIETNAM . He went through HELL. My mother said when he was being shipped out to Vietnam he held her tight and cried after 2 years he came home, my mom said he was 100 percent stranger. She grabbed him in a hug and it was like holding a statue. 😢 He suffered from PTSD depression and many health problems. problems. He fought the government 10 years for help he was always denied. Sadly he passed in 2018 age 71. I miss him very much.
f the government, f all governments, f the assholes who fight these wars volunterally, i could go on but i dont want to be on a watchlist, i probably already am hitler/pinochet 2024
I saw you portrayed Sikh soldiers fighting alongside the British in world wars, very few actually know the massive volunteer contribution from India to Britain during both world wars. And our indian tricolour being flured at end, gave goosebumps . Thanks sabaton loved it !
Absolutely perfect tribute to Motörhead, great idea to have Lemmy's picture in the video, along with the band member's presence. And then the inclusion of soldiers throughout all history, title might say 1916, but the message remains true in every war. You guys did it again. You made a masterpiece of a music video. Whole crew and actors who made it possible deserve a medal.
On behalf of my Great Grandfather who was an Anzac soldier and was killed on the Western Front, he was 24 with a son (My Grandfather) Thank you Sabaton for bringing the history of this horrific war to us. Lest we forget
Periodically, I return to this song. I love it because it is one of the few songs that still mske me cry. If you are reading this, I wish peace upon you.
As US Army veteran, this made me cry-tears of pain, tears of sorrow, tears for those I know I will never forget, tears for those I’ve loved and left behind. Thank you Sabaton.
That was a powerful tribute to soldiers who died on the battlefield. None of us know the names of all who died, but all of us know what they did. Thank you for this video Sabaton.
This is why many hold the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier as one of if not the most sacred sites in the United States. It is a monument for every soldier who died in glory, whose names are known only to God.
Weep for the lost oh children of peace. You must not forget the Fallen Warriors. They who gave everything that you may not have to give of yourself as they did. Honor them by standing up and being counted. Give them your respect for they will never be counted again.
I love the idea that those marching weren't just WW1 soldiers but every soldier used in their songs. I saw Spartans, Highlanders and even the Screaming Eagles. This song is a tribute to the men willing to fight for a cause
I was a soldier with the US Army in Iraq. What got me, besides the obvious from the lyrics, was the end. The soldiers all moving through the crowd, because they have to finish the journey. The crowd stops, because they can't follow. And the kid, looking up, knowing that the path ahead is unknown, and he shouldn't have been able to see that far down the road yet, but he must walk it anyway. And then they silently move off into the fog, marching into forever.
Would you compare your service with unrivaled air support and unlimited amounts of ammo and logistics behind you to that of the men fighting in Ukraine? You Americans throw your Veteran status everywhere. Did you have any chance of defeat? Do you see the hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who fought and kept on fighting and still are fighting, machine gun against machine gun over endless wastes. Hundreds dead and in Ukraine they are thousands dead. Are you a soldier or did you guard an airfield?
I have listened to this song and watched the video no less than 50 times today and every single time I have cried. The death scene verse breaks me every time I hear and see it. I understand the song wasn’t written by you guys but Lemmy is definitely crying at how amazingly you performed this and the production of the video. You guys knocked this one way out of the park. From a current serving US Army 2 combat tours in Afghanistan.
Yeah, it's great knowing the story of the Somme has been recognised by Sabaton, because "the green fields of France" is really the only song about this battle, made by an Irish soldier. "Lions led by donkeys" - German quote to describe the Tommies of 1916 ✌
SABATON, after saw this video 50 times I MUST say, I was soldier in my country and this is the most most beautiful honour for all this fallen héroes. Guys you broke the game.
A true tribute to the men and women who have died for causes they never understood. Another memorial to the lost. Another story of death. Thank you for bringing these stories to light, sabaton. We wouldn’t be where we are today without these soldiers.
In a time where the world is going mad, Sabaton does everything they can to remind us of how we can choose to learn from past mistakes and avoid those terrible costs. We are all humans, regardless of where we come from, what we believe in, and what we look like. We can all work together to end such horrible levels of destruction. Thank you, Sabaton.
"War alone brings up to their highest tension all human energies and imposes the stamp of nobility upon the peoples who have the courage to make it." -Benito Mussolini
This one hits you…..hard. I did 23 years and have a hard time explaining it to my wife and kids. You and Lemmy put into words what I can’t. Thank you for this.
You have no idea how much I have cried to this song. I’m only 16, but history is my passion, I don’t usually cry to anything, movies, books, pictures, podcasts, but this song, this song has made me ball my eyes out... i have never experienced war, (I am very blessed) but this song.... I just can’t really explain it
I dont even like history that much, and im also tearing up. Maybe its because my dad recently retired from 20 years in the navy but idk. i dont usually cry to things like this but this song hits different for some unknown reason
Thank you for honoring the fallen, to all those who left and never came home, for those that died forgotten and in pain for reasons they barely understood, knowing only that it was their duty. And thank you for honoring our man Lemmy, truly amazing.
YOU ARE NOT PREPARED! As a veteran, no matter how many times I listen to this song, it always makes me cry. I never saw combat in my entire career, but I know of many who did. War. War never changes.
Although I am technically a veteran, 8 months in the Gulf of Tonkin and one of those was in the middle east. Was on board ship getting ready to come back home when in 73 Israel and the religion of peace decided to spice things up. The closest was being able to see Russian sub pop up about one+ hundred yards behind us. That was a trip ! Being on a oiler we refueled and re-armed other ships. So we always had destroyers and air craft carriers within range. One of the worst things to hear was this is not a drill fire in the paint locker. We carried so much black oil and jet fuel we didn't really have to worry about anything if hit or if the fire couldn't be controlled 💥
I had a group of high school students reading AP history and they were shocked that I knew the origins of World War I. I literally said to them "if you want to get good at history, listen to Sabaton. Their songs are nothing but 2500 years worth of battles". I made 4 high schoolers Sabaton fans, and songs like this remind me why I'm a fan.
@@Z.O.M.G they literally have a second channel dedicated to teaching about history. their songs get you interested to learn more, then they link their second channel in the comments or description iirc and you likely end up going there to learn more. they're genuinely awesome.
@@Z.O.M.G yeah, their history channel is near the bottom of the description, the last link in there is their history channel. you learn something new every day xD
My great grand father was a soldier for France in WWI. I never knew him, but I heard all of the stories that my grandma taught me. He was 17 in 1915, and as a medicine student, he was not in the front. Instead, his task was to retrieve the bodies left in the trenches. Every day, for years, he had to wander in the silence of the deserted fields, and pile whoever he may find in a chariot. I can't even imagine what he has seen or how much PTSD that gave him, but the look in my grandma's eyes gave me chills fir life. After the war, he finished his career, and 25 years later, he was called back for WW2, as a medic on the Maghreb front. He finally made the landing in Italy, where a bomb took his leg in the end of 1943. He dedicated his life for France, but today, as the horrors of war seem closer closer than ever, I can't help but wonder : for what did he, and millions of other soldiers throughout the centuries and nations, had to suffer ?
My great grandfather was a combat medic in WW1 for the US military. He was stationed in Europe for two years. During the inter war period he moved to Scotland for 5 years and became a surgeon. Twenty years later he was called up back to service for the United States in WW2, he served in the battle of the bulge as a surgeon and had piece of shrapnel fly into his eye...so he could no longer be a surgeon. Pretty incredible man he was, although I never got to meet him. My grandfather however served in WW2 as well as an airbase commander and he ferried many celebrities to the front to entertain the troops! Pretty wild
When I first spotted the Motorhead flag, I thought to myself "Hey, that's a kinda cool tribute to Lemmy and Motorhead", Then I saw Mickey and Phil, and the photo of Lemmy join the parade... Incredibly powerful and moving. I swear, this song and "Christmas Truce" never fail to kick me square in the feels. Kudos gentlemen! Brilliantly done all around.
as a young metal fan that got into the genre through sabaton, coming back to them for this incredible tribute to one of my favorite bands warms my heart. In addition, my great-grandfather fell at the somme, and i have promised to wear a remembrance day pin on every one of those special days. Thank you Sabaton, for honoring all those who fell in the great war, and for honoring the real king of rock n' roll, Lemmy Kilmister 🤘🕊🕊
The greatest loss was not the men that died, but that we have forgotten them. These horrid atrocities, the barbaric savagery, and the pains of heartache suffered by these men was so high. Thank you for covering this and bringing it to light. This is up there with ballad of the bull for me, a song that makes me feel so deeply for their loss. Thank you sabaton, may you continue to restore the memories of those who have fought throughout the years
My great-great grandfather on my mother's side was a professional soldier who first saw action in the Boer War in 1900. He was captured, and when he returned to England to get married, settled down and raised a family, working as a shoe riveter. In 1914, he was called up - being an ex-soldier on the reserve, and was one of the first to be deployed on the Western Front. In 1915 he was briefly promoted to Lance Corporal until a German prisoner escaped on his watch. He was killed 23rd March 1918 when the field hospital was destroyed by shell fire. RIP Great-great granddad. 1880-1918.
This song is the pinnacle of my love for this band. Sabaton, if you read this, thank you for the amazing work you do. This song and others like it have shaped me into who i am and who i aspire to be like.
@@Sabaton I do hope to see a song or two some day about the US civil war. Personally I feel a US civil war song would need to be sad and yet hopeful tune. Maybe have it be about Men walking a dirt road through a sea of blue and grey, down a trail of grim and woe, with the song ending with A tall man in a top hat and a beard joining the men.
@@thewingedhussar4188 I'm hoping they do an American themed album sometime. Our 250th anniversary is coming up in 2026; It would be really cool if Sabaton gave us a tribute.
Sabaton is probably the only YT-Chanell where you can´t find any negative comments! One Community, all for one, one for all! Sabaton is not a Band, it is so much more! Thank you for every thing @Sabaton
Thank you to everyone who served, past, present & future Great song with a very deep meaning by the way. That's one of the reason why Sabaton is my favorite band
More deeper The better (with Sabaton) i really hope your greetings gives energy And strenght For The present And future soldiers. Sabaton IS biggly an international band so i quess Many soldiers Are reading comments of This Song😃🙏
It's really heartbreaking that not as many people listen to the second half of the song. I personally think the somber quiet of the strings has a very prominent, very haunting place in this song as a whole.
There's not much I can add here, I've never served and I've never lost someone I've known to war. But i still feel I need to say I hold nothing but the utmost respect for the men and women who lay down their lives to protect their countries. To anyone reading this who either is currently or has previously served, you have my thanks. It's not much, but it's what I can give
Thanks Buddy. i have served in the german Army shortly after our country was united. (1990/91) and even to this time we were told, not to wear our Uniform on the way home.... For me it feels so sick, how Germany looks at its soldiers. And i mean, how we look at our current Soldiers. Other Countries respect their armed Forces. and what do we Germans??????
US Army medical here. This hit hard. Absolute masterpiece. Here i am in an airport having to choke back some tears. Every song over the many years I've listened to Sabaton has got more and more amazing. You have never disappointed. Ever. Continue to tell these stories. Thank you for being such an amazing band.
I can only hope his death was quick and painless. The Memories of this battle tormented my Great Great Grandfather who lost his entire battalion in a single night. He put his service pistol in his mouth in 1923.
@@hellhoundactual8201 It is difficult to imagine losing all your friends and comrades at once, and the guilt of being the one who survived. My great grandmother's cousin emigrated to Australia from Sweden shortly before WWI broke out. In 1916 he enlisted and was sent to the Western front; the Anzac troops have formidable records and I found 70+ pages about his endeavours in the war. I don't think he ever engaged in actual battle as his task was to retrieve his fallen comrades from the trenches. This was nightmare enducing and most of the soldiers who had to do this could only stomach it more max four weeks before their nerves were shot. My relative spent TWO YEARS carrying out his friends and comrades from the trenches before he collapsed mentally and was sent back to Australia. I can only speculate why he endured it for so much longer, and my best guess it that he was used to gore as he grew up in a butcher shop. After one miserable year back in Australia he used a gun to no longer relieve the horrors from the war. It took almost four years before his dad received notice about his death. Anyway, he might have returned to Australia from the trenches but he was a broken shell; he was as much among the casualties of the trenches as those comrades he had to retrieve. Just like your great grandfather was.
I am not ashamed to admit how difficult it is for me to listen to this song in public and not cry because if I listen to it in private I always end up in a sea of tears.
As a Motörhead fan, I was hesitant to watch this video. I am happy that I finally watched. Sabaton, you did this song Justice. Lemmy is a criminally underrated lyricist. Fantastic job with the song and the video. Love the flag, Mickey, Phil and the Lemmy photo. The bomber flyer at the end was an extra touch of class.
@@SteelCommanderCat Why are you saying that nonsense? Don't you know his only friend is perfectly fine and he is actually the one suffering? Let him cry in peace because he just wants breathing space. Edit: Also, why do you think crying for a friend is strong? And what if the friend is fine but he isn't?
This has to be one of the best covers of any song in history. More than does justice to the original, even includes and credits the original artist, stays true to the history and punches you in the gut like no other. Tina Guo did a beautiful job with Cello arrangement at the end too. Majestic.
Wonderful tribute. My grandfather tried to enlist in Belgium when he was 15, but they found out, so he was put to work collecting identifying tags, ID, or momentoes from dead soldiers on the battlefields. He could never talk about the sights he endured. He left Belgium at 17 to Canada after; leaving his country and all the horror behind. It was hell for those poor boys & men.
I’ a Marine Vet that went over to cleanup the mess after the 1983 bombing of the Marine Headquarters in Beirut , Lebanon. This song made me come apart. I cried Ike a Baby for 10 minutes. I have been touched that hard by a song in y life. Keep doing what you do. I a definitely one of your biggest fans.
As someone from lancashire, my town had a 'pals' battalion who fell along with so many others at the somme. This song really hit me somewhere I didnt realise I could be hit. Thank you guys it's genuinely a beautiful cover! I often struggle with a feeling of lacking history or pride in my family or where I come from but knowing those hard working lads and my family for generations have carried that strong northern spirit of just bloody well cracking on has been giving me a decent push. Not quite sure how relevant that was but ive gone to the effort of typing it now so there you have it. Thank you Sabaton!!!
I volunteer with a group of fellas in my area to help find and document Civil War graves, the vast majority of are unmarked here, simply because the flimsy wooden crosses have been lost to history, if they were there in the first place. we've put names to 16 men. we do, in fact, remember their names.
In our case, the headstones were lost because they were removed to serve as defense against enemy rounds in the Battle of Kernstown ( 3/23/1862 ). The cemetery at the church in VA is fenced off with a plaque explaining the lack of marked graves of those who were buried there before the war.
This piece! Just wow. Dying a terrible death, helpless and left alone concluding with "Thats just how it is for a soldier" Thanks Sabaton for bringing this song back especially in these times. and RIP Lemmy.
The song premiered yesterday during Holy Friday, a day of mourning since it honors the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and here in Greece we usually visit graves of loved ones during this day. The song suits such an occasion and it is a good remembrance for those who were unfortunate to lose their lives so tragically and at such a young age. Well done Sabaton Happy Easter everyone all the way from Hellas 🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷☦️🇬🇷🇬🇷
You've just blistered my heart, left in tetters my outlook, and raised my flagging soul for many reasons. A brutal and honest reminder of how we are so disconnected of the realities of living a just and selfless life. And a MASSIVE thank you for calling Motorhead back from virtual obscurity. I miss that band far too much. As Lemmy would say, "Top notch".
I don’t normally comment on much, but this song reminds me so much of my grandfather. He was the top turret gunner on a B-17 in WW2. He lied about his age to join the army air corp. He received a Purple Heart and was shot down twice. But the story that always stuck with me… one of the fuselage gunners was hit in the guts with flack, on the way into Germany. He had to sit in the corner, holding in his own insides, crying for his mother for 6+ hours and there was absolutely nothing they could do for him. He died 2 hours after they landed back in England. Our current generation barely understands sacrifice, but this song brings me to tears every time I hear it for the men lost in war. May there be a day where war and death is no more. Maranatha. Thank you for remembering the fallen, Sabaton.
Wow. I love Sabaton, and I love this song as one of the best they've ever produced. Yet even so I got desensitized to the power of the last verses, only able to truly feel them when in the right mood. Your comment though was a gut-punch of the terrible realities of war. The idea we should never get complacent, even in small ways like I did, is now more alive than ever in me, alongside a great sorrow for what that gunner and many people like him went through. God bless you and your family, as well as any others who must navigate the lunacy that is war. Lest we forget.
Over the past couple years, sabaton has became my favorite band. Honestly, i was never a huge metal fan, but these guys music really hits home with me. I guess its just because im such a history buff.
Same! I’m no metalhead but I love all of Sabaton’s music because I love history. I’d even be willing to go see them live (especially if they play 82nd All the Way, as a Tennessean).
@@ggmidori2152 I saw them in October at the Ryman. And yes, they did play 82nd All the Way, and what I suspect were soldiers from the fort were in the row in front of me having fun.
These guys are the entire reason I love Power Metal, found a lot of bands after l found them. Before I listened to Metallica, A7x, Disturbed, etc. almost exclusively.
I'm from South Yorkshire, so I grew up learning about how the PALS were wiped out in a single day. There's monuments in every town, even the smallest of villages with more names on them than I thought could have lived there. Sabaton always hits hard, but holy hell this one is something else.
This song actually brought me to tears. I was in the US Army, and I unfortunately never went overseas but several of my friends did. I lost 7 friends between Iraq and Afghanistan, this song makes me remember them. Thanks Sabaton for this powerful song, truly a masterpiece.
"I heard my friend cry, and he sank to his knees, coughing blood as he screams for his mother..." damn man this thing right here made me cry like a baby
My uncle served in the army in the Pacfic. During a night guard they were attacked and the guy next to him got his head blown off and still finished the step he was taking before collapsing. The warriors don't leave those memories on the battlefield. They live with them forever.
This hits so hard because my grandfather was 15yrs old when he enlisted in 1942, he lied and said he was 17, and a week after his 16th birthday he saw his first battle in the Philippines. After 3 months on the frontline he was told he was too valuable as a mechanic and placed in mechanized support as a diesel mechanic. And a part of his job was to collect dog tags from the dead after battles, including Okinawa. It took 45yrs before he spoke about his 2yrs in Asia for the first time. And I had to pull out every detail I could because he refused to speak about it. My last conversation with him before he died I told him he was like Captain America, he said "No I'm not, I'm just one of the unfortunate few who made it back alive." He lived with the guilt of not dying alongside his brothers for the rest of his life. This song is great.
OK, now I understand why Joakim always wears his big sunglasses - so noone will see his tears. Because there is just no f*king way he wouldn’t shed a tear while singing such emotional and sad, beatiful songs. I cry every time I hear this one, same goes for Price of a mile and some other songs. 😢 Great job guys, I love you!❤
I think nothing - no song or movie or story that I have ever heard of - described war better than this song. It's absolutely heartbreaking. Every person in the world should listen to this song. Perhaps then, one day, we will finally have peace. Thank you Sabaton.
Sitting here trying not to break down and cry watching this. This is one of the most emotionally powerful songs and videos I’ve ever witnessed. Thank you Sabaton so much for doing what you do for all of us and for the memory of the fallen.
My great grandfather served as a doctor from 1917-19 during the war. It still helps me remember that when the world is trying to pull itself apart there will always be those trying to pull it back together. Such a wonderful tribute for so many.
Whoa- I NEVER saw this video until today. Hits you right in the stomach so much pride I am feeling now. I have a picture of my great grandfather behind a .30 cal in WW1 with the AEF. So glad I got to know him and watch him grow old into his 90's. He was priceless. His name was Genovese Carelli and I will never forget his name. The hardest part of these lyrics is "and that's why there's no one to remember our names". When I get my POW/MIA updates from the VFW, I always read each man's story so they aren't forgotten.
I remember times when Metal music videos were extremely budget constraints and would look cheaply made, they had their charm and quite frankly it was all about the music, and it still is all about the music, but Sabaton is creating movies to go alongside their Music. Can't wait for yet another banger, First soldier is running on repeat.
There are no real words that could describe how I felt while watching this video... A great tribute for all soldiers who have fought during the wars of history. May their souls rest in eternal peace. Thank you guys for making this absolutely epic video and song.
As someone who was in the US Army, I love this song! I became a Sabaton fan last year just before your Minnesota concert and I wasn't able to attend. I hope you return to tour the US again and make a stop in Minnesota again, so I can attend your concert this time!
Being a us military vet and combat vet of 17 years (3 to go) this really touched me. Everyone deserves to have their story told. Thank you for everything you do sabaton.
This still makes me cry, over a year on. not only for how sad yet beautiful it is but also for my family, friends and country men who died in the wars. One of my stepdad's grand uncles or something has their name an a war memorial near Portsmouth and Southsea train station...I sometimes go to that memorial just to quietly tell him how everyone is doing. I might never see his grave, but it brings me a little bit of comfort
I have now watched it 20 times and it gets me weeping every time. Must have been an outmost honor for Mikkey Dee to wear the Swedish Karoliner Uniform while drumming. Being Swedish and all. And Tommy Johansson dressed the same for his guitar solo.

Today June 6th, 2024 marks 80 years since the beginning of the D-Day landings in World War 2. And while this piece of art is originally about the Battle of the Somme in World War 1, it remains just as important for D-Day, and any other battles from throughout history. Do not forget the lives lost to bring us to a brighter tomorrow. To the nearly 4,500 Allied troops of whom lost the lives on D-Day, and the 73,000 of whom lost their lives in the 12 weeks following during the Battle of Normandy, may you rest in peace with honor, glory, and an immense pride for helping bring humanity to a more peaceful future.
This song dropped a couple of days before ANZAC day here in New Zealand. I listened to it all the way while i walked to the dawn service at 5am in the morning. Thought about all the brave souls that made the ultimate sacrifice. They will not be forgotten and will be remembered. This song hits a bit closer to heart since it dropped so close to ANZAC day which is 25 April. ANZAC day is such a important to day to us New Zealanders & Aussies.
I don't have the words... It is magic... THANK YOU SABATON FOR REMINDING US OF THESE EVENTS, THESE PEOPLE, AND THESE BATTLES THAT WERE SILENCED. THANK YOU SABATON, FOR MAKING US DISCOVER THESE THINGS THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN COMMEMORATED MORE OFTEN. Thank you Sabaton, for helping us not to forget ❤️
BTW, there's a connection between Motörhead and Sabaton: Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons, the band of former Motörhead guitarist Phil Campbell and his three sons, plus vocalist Joel Peters, is under Nuclear Blast Records, the same record label as Sabaton.
This song is a beautifully composed masterpiece, and conveys the harshness of war in general. It brought feelings to me that I haven’t had since the release of Christmas Truce. Thank you.
Since this song came out, I've been playing it in my car, everywhere I go.... It reminds me of my brother, though he's only 20 years old and a current Marine, but it makes me think about what he may go through in his career of being a United States Marine, and a good soldier. I can say this both from me and from my parents... stay safe little brother. I think about and pray for your safety every single day. Love you Josh.
I love that the Anzac and Indian troops were included in this video as well, a lot of people forget that the "British" soldiers on the Somme were not only British but included Canadian, Indian, Australian and New Zealanders and the French had African troops from French West Africa as well. A truly beautiful tribute and cover

Really have to remember to listen to Sabaton songs in private for the first time. I've had no less than 7 people ask if I'm okay and only 3 of them understood when i replied, "Yeah, it's just Sabaton."
This is the only song I've ever heard in my life that's gotten me choked up... I'm very desensitized to a lot of empathetic situations, but this song manages every time. Still haven't cried, but I'm hoping I will.
Just to add some perspective using the fact of 1 death every 4.4 seconds this song runtime equates to 103 soldiers in the battle of the Somme… thank you Sabaton for the cover and the hard work y’all do giving us music that honors the fallen of every war. No matter what side they were on

57000? You mean rest in peace to all the MILIONS dying...from any site... they are all human....
Thank you

The original song is Lemmy singing accompanied by a bass drum and a cellist. Very simple and very powerful at the same time. This arrangement takes nothing away from the original and adds so much depth to the story. I think Lemmy would have loved it.
It makes us happy to hear that! Thanks 🤘
Lemmy's version is Lemmy recounting what his grandfather told him of the Great War. Sabaton's version is a revision of that. It's a generation after Lemmy.
@Sabaton I didn't even know this was a cover. Well done and this was a very much a well made tribute song to those who died at that battle.

For international bankers to profit off the lives of those who believe they were doing the right thing, when in fact it was a lie.
It's sad that we have to deal with transgressors, more people have to resist the oppression. Freedom is not free
War with fallen lives is only for citizens while it is just a chess game for politicians.
Pretty wild
You story made me cry and I wish your family a warfree life
When I first spotted the Motorhead flag, I thought to myself "Hey, that's a kinda cool tribute to Lemmy and Motorhead", Then I saw Mickey and Phil, and the photo of Lemmy join the parade... Incredibly powerful and moving.
I swear, this song and "Christmas Truce" never fail to kick me square in the feels. Kudos gentlemen! Brilliantly done all around.
And the person who is holding the picture of Lemmy, is Motorheads Tour Manager
The Final Solution and Ballad Of Bull also make me tear up
as a young metal fan that got into the genre through sabaton, coming back to them for this incredible tribute to one of my favorite bands warms my heart.
Thank you sabaton, may you continue to restore the memories of those who have fought throughout the years
Also honoring the man that wrote it Lemmy
My great-great grandfather on my mother's side was a professional soldier who first saw action in the Boer War in 1900. He was captured, and when he returned to England to get married, settled down and raised a family, working as a shoe riveter. In 1914, he was called up - being an ex-soldier on the reserve, and was one of the first to be deployed on the Western Front. In 1915 he was briefly promoted to Lance Corporal until a German prisoner escaped on his watch. He was killed 23rd March 1918 when the field hospital was destroyed by shell fire. RIP Great-great granddad. 1880-1918.

My grandfather was severely wounded by shrapnel in 1918 serving on a mortar crew defending a hospital.

I respect the sacrificf and suffering of soldiers but any effort that awoid war is at least as great
It's really heartbreaking that not as many people listen to the second half of the song. I personally think the somber quiet of the strings has a very prominent, very haunting place in this song as a whole.
Agreed the part where they begin to fade away is where I always breakdown into tears.
gotta say, I accidently skipped it the first time as I thought it was done, but I have heard and read it to the end a few times now
There's not much I can add here, I've never served and I've never lost someone I've known to war.
And i mean, how we look at our current Soldiers.

this is a great song no doubt, but absolute masterpiece is the original form Motorhead
My great great grandfather died in that battle, thank you for this tribute
Your great great grandfather was a brave man to fight in that battle.
Never did any song made me this emotional... thank you Sabaton for keeping the memory of all those heros alive.
Some random dude: real men don't cry.
Sabaton: hold that thought.

This has to be one of the best covers of any song in history. More than does justice to the original, even includes and credits the original artist, stays true to the history and punches you in the gut like no other. Tina Guo did a beautiful job with Cello arrangement at the end too. Majestic.
Wow. Thanks for that! 🤘
It's for heroes like him that we write our songs. Thank you for sharing his story.
Your grandpa was a casualty of that mindless meat grinder even if he did not carry a rifle. I hope he found his peace.
I'm a Lancashire lad and the story of the Accrington Pals has never been forgotten
Thank you for sharing this story! Be proud and stay mindful :)
My great Uncle was lost in the mud, Lancashire pals battalion. Name on the Menin gate as he was never recovered.
From Staffordshire, UK, we had a full regiment of proud boys going to France, 1916, inexperienced and fed to the meat grinder.
I volunteer with a group of fellas in my area to help find and document Civil War graves, the vast majority of are unmarked here, simply because the flimsy wooden crosses have been lost to history, if they were there in the first place. we've put names to 16 men. we do, in fact, remember their names.
Respect pour ce que vous faites. Nous avons besoin des personnes comme vous qui nous permettez de continuer à nous souvenir et de les honorer. Merci
Thank you for what you are doing. Each and every one of those boys deserves to be remembered and not left forgotten.
That's super cool
In our case, the headstones were lost because they were removed to serve as defense against enemy rounds in the Battle of Kernstown ( 3/23/1862 ). The cemetery at the church in VA is fenced off with a plaque explaining the lack of marked graves of those who were buried there before the war.
This piece! Just wow. Dying a terrible death, helpless and left alone concluding with "Thats just how it is for a soldier"
Thanks Sabaton for bringing this song back especially in these times. and RIP Lemmy.
The song premiered yesterday during Holy Friday, a day of mourning since it honors the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and here in Greece we usually visit graves of loved ones during this day.

Before I listened to Metallica, A7x, Disturbed, etc. almost exclusively.
@@mavfin8720 I remember hearing they were here the day after 🥲 wish I could have gone.
I'm from South Yorkshire, so I grew up learning about how the PALS were wiped out in a single day. There's monuments in every town, even the smallest of villages with more names on them than I thought could have lived there. Sabaton always hits hard, but holy hell this one is something else.
What does pals stand for?
This song actually brought me to tears. I was in the US Army, and I unfortunately never went overseas but several of my friends did. I lost 7 friends between Iraq and Afghanistan, this song makes me remember them. Thanks Sabaton for this powerful song, truly a masterpiece.
My great grandfather lost his life on 1st July 1916 at the Battle of The Somme a young man from Northern Ireland he will never be forgotten❤
Hi,I'm Peter from Scotland,I have an interest in the AEF in ww1. You are clearly, rightfully, proud of your forebear.
