  • We spent most of the day cutting up the rest of our first pig. We had all the meat cut and ready to be ground when something made our day come to a screeching halt. Good thing we always try to have a back-up plan!

Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 5 new videos every week! Tuesday through Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we transition from city dwellers to full time homesteaders!

Feeling a tad bit sad for the last remaining pig...all alone without her buddies. Such intelligent creatures. So much work involved in butchering and grinding the meat but it does look lovely. Your girls would love it up here in N. Ontario, Canada. We have about a foot of snow on the ground already. I guess it's here to stay till spring, darnit. It seems the older I get, the more I dislike the snow! Consider yourselves lucky that you don't get a lot of snow :)

I would be saving some of that pork fat to use with your deer meat. To make venison summer sausage, brats, and snack sticks. Use 1 pound of fat with 4 pounds of venison for 5 pound batches.
Love the channel, you guys are doing a great job.

I use pork fat when I'm making my venison sausage, but I use beef fat for my other ground venison. I like medium cooked burgers, and I don't want to eat undercooked pork.

A friend of mine shared a tip with me that works great; and now I will pass it on. When filling my ziplock bags, I first turn the top down (before my hands are messy 😊). This keeps the zipper clean as I fill the bag. Then once it’s filled I flip the top back up and zip it. I love it!

Yes love the idea of flattening it out , saves space , makes it easier to defrost. But if in a hurry as thin as it is you can chop it with a good chefs knife or defrost it in cold water never use hot water for some reason I used hot water and my meat had started to turn so please always use cold water.

I don't think kids ever stop getting excited over snow. My kids have lived where it snows, their whole lives. And they still squeal with delight when we get the first snow of the season. I went through a period (like a typical adult) where I was like "yuck, snow." But with as dry as it's been here in WY the last couple of years, I get pretty excited to see snow too. Lol! Snow means moisture.

Good to see your family at the thrift store. I remember when my daughter and I went to make a donation to a thrift store. We were soon hooked on this store who had amazing deals of almost new household items and clothing. Having four children back then, it was a big help when times were stretched financially. We donated anything that was gently used at this same store to able others the blessing we experienced. Today all of my children have learned from this time and are not caught up in the hype of fashion magazines etc. God bless. I so enjoy your meal preps.

The two of you were working so hard. You really have your own cold room in that Greenhouse, I was watching you all bundled up, and realised how cold your hands must be. No problems with the pork being in too warm an environment. I love green or red cabbage, but with lots of black pepper and butter....I think I will try it like you made though, looked yum. Our seasons are opposite to you, I’m just planting my garden, and summer hasn’t quite started. I’ve just picked the first peas and beans and strawberries. @@ApeiEats it's hard work but so satisfying to be working for yourself and getting that many results! We will be investing in a goat, some chickens and quail, maybe a pig to raise our selves one day hopefully soon😊 I've been trying to find a sponsorship program I can create where I can grow food for homeless shelters and people in need. Finances are tough and I don't have the right equipment, but something I'm working on very soon! Lol

@@ApeiEats I'm so happy to see more people getting into homesteading and growing their own food! It's an amazing feeling to go out in my garden and pick fresh produce! I am so in love with the beauty of what mother nature has to offer us right in our own backyard! I'm working towards getting donations &/or sponsorship for my garden seeds, tools & materials so I can donate what I grow to the homeless shelters in need. There are so many here and it breaks my heart to see the veterans especially in such bad shape. They faught for us and risked their lives, so I'd love to help them with a meal they most certainly deserve!

Love this video! Everything was so much fun to watch...love how your daughter finally gets to play in the snow. Now that we finally got out of AZ we will hopefully see snow this year too. This will be our son's first time seeing snow for real.

One good way to make ground meat stretch is to add at least 1/4 cup of dry barley rice to every 1-lb. of ground meat. Cook the barley rice in stock/ broth and then mix into the cooked ground meat. It will taste like and have the similar texture of cooked ground meat. And it stretches your ground meat. I learned this trick in culinary school to add extra fiber in our family's diet. Good job with the amount of ground meat you got! Incredible! And what a delicious looking dinner too! Good deal! Thanks for sharing this.

What is barley rice? I have heard of barley and rice but not barley rice. I add rice or bread crumbs to my meatloaf.

@@carolparrish194 Barley is a grain, like rice. I just call it barley rice because I cook it just like rice. Sorry for the confusion.

It would be great on the pocketbook to stretch ground meat that way, but my husband is having difficulty getting his diabetes under control, we can't use carbs to stretch meat. We stretch our ground meat by adding a pound or so of finely chopped mushrooms. Mushrooms have almost no carbs, and they add tons of flavor, kind of like eating a steak smothered with sauteed mushrooms.

You are well sorted for Winter - or will be once you have all your chicken and pork processed. Nice to see the whole family again too.

My sister in law brought me a recipe years ago that she said was called "wreck on the mountain". It was small white potatoes and red cabbage steamed a little then fried in butter. We often added ground beef or polish sausage coins to it for the meat. Cabbage is an awesome filler.

When I was growing up, my parents would butcher a pig during hunting season and grind up pound per pound of pork and venison together, and package them in packages between 1 and 3 lbs.
that mixture of ground venison and ground pork would cook up really nice and made for some very tasty meals.

Congratulations on your harvest of pig! Looks good. Knowing where it comes from makes it even better. We had 2 sheep that we grew cut up and are enjoying it! Looks like we are going to get another round of snow like stuff Thursday! Stay warm!
