I think to this day western people still misunderstand a lot about how Japanese and Sengoku Jidai's culture are, simply because the misleading fictional stuff in Hollywood and anime. It's a period full of war and betrayal, not what people imaging full of honor and respect, Bushido isn't even a thing until Edo Bakufu. You can really tell a lot from how Sekiro used for word, description and background. it's nice to see someone explain the details within
Small detail about the dilapidated temple: some of the holes in the wall have boards sticking outward. An early hint that the talismans aren't meant to keep demons out, but rather in.
The dried blood on the zushi made me wonder. If it was used to store important religious items, what if it stored serpent viscera at some point before Ashina turned to worshiping the Divine Dragon, and that is why the temple has become dilapidated, because the gods of the land are being forgotten. Really love all the info you give on Japanese history as you explore this game! Don't worry about taking your time on the videos. They are well worth the wait.
I think it might also be where the prosthetic arm was enshrined, and the blood splatters are representative of all the bloodshed the shinobi fang caused before the sculptor finally decided to put it to rest to avoid reawakening the flames of hatred.
I only found this recently, and I am so hopeful that you will make more of this! The Lore of this is amazing, and your ability to help us better understand it is like amazing!
So interesting about the smoke signal location! I always theorized that Genichiro caused his own downfall by kidnapping Kuro, leading Wolf to take out most of their defenses. They had no warning when the ministry arrived in the outskirts, especially since this is one of the first mini bosses you can encounter.
You have a great eye for detail and your descriptions are fantastic. Loved this episode--don't worry about taking your time to get these right. Your humor also had me smiling throughout the video, too.
It is such a delight to wake up and see you’ve posted another one of your videos!!! ☺️ I just adore your linguistic insight and getting to follow you through this game, like we’re in a sidecar on your lore motorcycle journey 🤩🥳🏍️
I absolutely LOVE this new format! Almost feels like a complete lore-through on everything there is to see and know while traversing the map (which is something I was never able to find on YT). I was wondering tho, will you cover NPC dialogue and questlines aswell after this part of the project is done?
Thanks! Oh, dialogues are a big pain since I wasn't able to find the scripts anywhere and transcribing all of them myself would take a while. I think, I might do an episode where I just cover whatever inconsistencies I stumbled upon. As for the questlines, I'll tyr to cover them as we explore the environments and visit different quest areas ( ̄ω ̄)
@@shetanislair That sounds awesome, thanks for the effort you put into making these videos! As for the japanese and english dialogue script, I managed to extract them both from the game files. I could pass them to you, but theres only one inconvenience, there's no speaker referenced to distinguish who is talking and when the dialogue takes place. That said, I deeply care for this series and sekiro lore in general, so if you're interested I could go over them and insert the names of the characters myself before passing them to you. No pressure though! Lemme know if that would be useful to you!
You don't have to insert the names, I think I'll be able to figure out the speakers If you could send the scripts to ~contact@shetanislair.com~, it would be a tremendous help! (っ˘ω˘ς )
@@shetanislair There is a decent amount of leftover and cut dialogue left in the files and sometimes it's not clear. An easy example is the first cinematic, the correct subtitles are in a separate file called ムービー字幕 . When I was reading the game files I made some partial notes for what I thought was cut dialogue, I can share them if you think they would be helpful.
I belive "Reservoir" is a good translation for "水手曲輪", it was an enclosure made for storing water in case of a siege. Japanese Wikipedia call them "水の手曲輪". Source: omemate-research-castle I think General Tenzen sigil is a faded combination of the Hirata Crest and a variation of the Ashina Crest. the Hirata crest It's a bit more clear in a a screenshot you can find on the Fextralife wiki While the Ashina Crest variation can be seen in his concept art. P.S. I had to rewrite this comment since TH-cam deleted it and I can't find it in my history. I removed external links to be safe :(
@@shetanislair Glad to be of help :) A Toyotomi crest is really interesting and I'm also curious about the Hirata crest since it's not in the concept art but can be seen in game. A question if I may, perhaps did you set TH-cam to automatically delete comment with external link? I would have like to link the glossary entry I had found for (水手曲輪) and the in-game screenshot and concept art of Tenzen :(
The best english for "Kuruwa" would probably be "Ward", but I think that just refers to the area inside the walls. Like I definitely wouldn't say somebody standing on the wall firing arrows at the attackers was in the ward; he'd be be on the curtain wall. But maybe in Japanese he'd be "On the kurawa" as opposed to "in the kurawa" or some other similar distinction.
I figured that the zushi in the Dilapidated Temple is where Sculptor kept the Shinobigishu before giving it to Wolf. It's not a theory I'm fully committed to but I do kinda like the idea of it. If something had to have been in there, then why not out new left arm?
It is pictured in the artbook on the page with the broken bridge just outside the temple, but I couldn't find any tree there that would resemble it. Maybe it didn't make it into the game (・_・;)

Thank you! The environment exploration has only just begun (☆ω☆)
