Get your kid a flip phone or text only until 13-14. For communicating with parents. Not being on the internet 24/7. Elementary students certainly don’t need one.

Thanks Pat, for taking the time to tackle this subject. I have 3 kids and am a little paranoid about all this. Trust me, I know about most of these tactics as I was bullied as a kid (but still managed to defend myself well) and still feel some form of anxiety when watching my kids grow and knowing that each passing year, they will most likely experience it.
As a concerned parent, the best thing to do is to learn about the ways to avoid building a vulnerable child and have them built strong mentally and aware of the traps/dangers.

I’m so glad my husband sent this to me! I am sharing this with every parent I know! My 6 year old daughter dealt with bullying a year ago and it was the most heartbreaking thing to hear once I FINALLY got the information out of her. She went into panic mode. Broke down in tears like I’ve never seen, body shakes, fever and everything from the fear she had of telling me but I made sure to sit down with her and I showed her how to speak up for herself. She never dealt with it again and she’s back to her happy self! It’s so important to notice all the signs and tackle them right away!

To me it's incomprehensible that schools even allow smart phones on the premises. We couldn't have a Walkman or Gameboy, or any portable video game device. We couldn't even have a digital watch unless we could correctly read an analogue clock. A smart phone is infinitely more destructive, and completely unnecessary for children. As far as parents needing to communicate with their kids, plan ahead. If something earth shattering happens that absolutely must be communicated during school hours, call the office. After school they should be somewhere that has a phone. These must be the same parents who were raised by TV when they were children.

i remember when i used to take those internet safety sessions in school for granted. things like not accepting friend requests from unknowns, not using real names or disclosing too much info on your profile. i'm glad my parents didn't get me a phone till i was 15, my friends all had phones by the time they were 12-13. just basically don't engage in conversation/interaction with anyone you don't personally know on social media. especially when it comes to accepting unknown friend requests as i've had friends who've had their accounts hacked cause of this. when you're a kid you don't really take internet safety seriously cause you have this non-chalant attitude that it won't happen to you. luckily i was never a victim of cyberbullying, if any child is reading this please do take internet safety seriously.

Excellent video and advice. Keeping healthy, open communication with your kids is the best way to protect them because due to the world we live in- computers needed for homework and divorce/schedules, many kids need cell phones to communicate with parents so banning them also creates difficulties. Kids need to understand the dangers, know how to get help and be aware of the dangers and risks associated with online predators of all ages and types.

Do I watch videos on my phone WITH them? Yes I do.... funny cat videos or like recently we watched one about kidnapping. My mother is an OS person where she never bought into the whole IM and internet dating. Both her and myself, but mainly had to raise a 4 year, who is now 22. My mother never let her just have access to social media or the internet. I always kept her away from these things. As she got older, my mom used to watch such type shows and I used to watch crime shows in the background so that my niece could absorb the info. We'd have conversations about things and she'd ask why we were being lax with her and the internet and I explained it to her. But she's become aware of the dangers out there on social media. The issue and problem today is that majority of parents stopped being parents and don't really take control of what their children can have access to and what they can't. Sure you can't stop them if they get it from someone else, but you can have proper discussions in their early years preparing them. There is no reason why children should be relaying private and personal things to ANYONE!

Having dealt with 40 million eyeballs as a job - you really need to ignore and repeat. That also means on camera - the number of people who suddenly use their space on camera to talk about it - eek 😱 bad advice - ignore and repeat. They want to be mentioned - it’s fuel.

Also another thing. My niece has a mobile phone and she barely uses it except for work, schooling and to stay in contact with my mother or me. She just grew up uninterested in using it for anything else. Might be because like me she had a pretty sheltered existence but she's better than I was. When she goes to bed it's off. If she gets odd messages she gets rid of them. But that doesn't mean she's perfect because she's 22, so she's talking to people online making friends overseas. She only wants to deal with certain individuals, female preferably. But she is aware of the dangers of talking to people online. Because we never stop bringing up these topics.

The internet is a big place with lots of things to learn.
I think it's a better idea to heavily monitor your child's online activities starting at the age of 13/15.
This is so that they can better adapt to the online environment without being too late.
One thing I like to mention is that owning a laptop or computer solves quite the few issues.
They can't bring it anywhere they want, and they're checked inside the household.

Disconnect, swear it was called 'The Disconnect' lol, I saw it back then is a nice example of it, however Amanda Todd's story is the perfect encapsulation of online cyber bullying, stalking, and lack there of any follow through from law enforcement on the matter showing how disgusting individuals can get away with such behavior. Nice well made informational video for sure, but cyber bullying was always here and ain't going anywhere

Makes me think twice about my son. Hes 9 and had a smart phone since hes been 6 or 7. Hes not on social media. Only somewhat social media would be roblox video games and we talk about content and other kids and friends messaging him on the platform. The phone is mainly for him to call me, family or play video games

I can recall of one instance of a cyberbully, a keyboard communist that larps and also bullies and labels people under a compressed amount of stereotypes. Like the person I encountered puts cyberbullies to shame, yet surprisingly enough, his rude replies and comments hardly had any affect against anyone that he is being rude to. Gets hit repeatedly in return by smart and logical replies that forced him to keep on deflecting.

If I were a Father, I’d give my child a pre-paid flip phone as their first phone. Then when he/she graduates high school, by the time they’re 18, then they can choose to upgrade to a smartphone.

People need to realize one thing about smartphones, they're TOOLS, not TOYS.
Just as you wouldn't hand a chainsaw, firearm, automobile, or any dangerous power tool to a minor neither should you hand them a smartphone. A plain ol' flip-phone for communication's all they need. Hell, it's all I need and I'm 70!
There's a reason we don't allow minors to buy firearms, tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, to drive or to vote. They're just not mature enough. High-tech equipment should be in the same category.
They're still children folks. Hell, some will still be children until they're 30 years old! But that's another matter.

@@mbii7667So they did! A bit before my time sadly, I would have enjoyed it! But here's the thing, the kids were ALWAYS under strict adult supervision while on the range, either indoor or outdoor and the arms and ammunition never left the facilities. High school archery worked the same, whether that's still around I have no idea.

I'm 24 and my parents instead of simply denying me a smartphone made me earn one for myself, and educated me on the dangers when I finally bought one for myself. They sat me down and said that they know I'm smart and will figure out a way around their rules on my internet use but made sure to drill in my head that if I do I will see things that could have life changing negative consequences. I can see this from both sides and I agree with pat. Education, good role models and delaying in some way smartphone usage early, is what's key. Children need to be out and about playing with friends, getting dirty, scraping knees, experiencing life for themselves not through a screen.

We have a family flip phone with unlimited text and calling from Metro by T-Mobile. 30$ a month. Kids shouldn’t have smart phones. Easy access to inappropriate sites, which children should never have access too. It’s pretty stupid to say but I trust my kids with a smart phone 😂. While my kids live with me, only text and calling phones are allowed. I survived with one, they can too.
