  • Tara reviews the influential classic anime Revolutionary Girl Utena, which tells the story of the girl prince who revolutionizes the world. This series has a lot of weight put on it as a part of anime history, but does it stand the test of time?
Middle schooler Utena Tenjou was swept off her feet by a prince as a young girl, and was so impressed by him that she decided to become a prince herself! Little does she know that when her paths cross with a mysterious girl Anthy Himemiya, she finds her fate intertwined with the rebirth of the world.

1:22 Gotta correct you on this. Saionji denied ever putting the letter up. It is argued that it was Anthy who actually did it in order to propel Utena in the duels.

You walked right past one of Utena's biggest clues; the school's name. Ootori is Japanese for "phoenix", with all its signals of death, transfiguration and rebirth. And there's plenty of that in all the story-arcs as well as the overall theme of Anthy's liberation from her brother.

Don't even get started on that symbolism without bring the movie in as well, it will realy fuck with what seems like cut and dry issues about the characters symbolism when you have both to reference

When I wrote my first book "Anime Explosion", the Utena chapter was just about the TV series because there was no movie yet. Sometimes sequels in anime have to go out on a long limb.

You missed the biggest part of Utena in this review. It's all based on Jung's theories of psychiatry. This is a really deep anime. I don't really think it's about love. It is about growing up, masks, deception, and betrayal. No body is who they appear to be in Utena, especially Anthy and Akio. She's as much of a manipulator as he is. You didn't mention that she is a the bride and take all that abuse as self sacrifice for her brother the prince. She represents self loathing as the witch. Akio as the prince is an unattainable dream, which turns out to be a sham. The whole reason they want the rose bride is so that they can get into the castle which they believe holds the key to revolution and making their dreams come true. Utena finally gets there and finds out it's not all it's cracked up to be. Utena leaving the school at the end is her growing up and moving past the collective hive mind of high school and society and when her act convinces Anthy to do the same, that's the revolution because it breaks the cycle. I'm not a really well versed in Jung. I know that he focuses on masks and what society perceives by them (Persona) as well as male and female roles (anima & animus) He also talked about introverts vs extroverts. Everything ties together in Utena, even the shadow puppets and the battle songs. My favorite battle song is Tainai TokeiToshi Oruroi, which reference the Astronomical clock in Prague. Utena is a really awesome anime with all of the symbolism.

Hellbound Iscariot to me Chu-Chu , whilst for the most part being a source of comic relief, often relays important sentiments & clues about the series based on his behaviour particularly towards different characters and appearance. For example, when Anthy is going to see her brother for him to rape her, when Utena asks why doesn’t Chu-Chu go with him he pales, even before we’re explicitly told what is going on. Chu-Chu is also a tool that is used by the creators to focus our attention on a specific details . Like when chu-Chu dresses up as saionji and saionji becomes chu-chu hanging from a tree, meaning that saionji is acting like a monkey ... idk just my thoughts .

Utena is a really unique character and the show is DROWNING in symbolism, ESPECIALLY the movie. I remember spending days after finishing the show trying to figure out what I just watched. It was one of my first animes too so I wasn't expecting it to be so deep. The show is truly a rarity with great writing, even if it is hard to understand.

I’m African American and Ghanaian (West African Country) and when I straighten my hair people ask me if I’m Indian no joke🤔. The girl in my Japanese class who was Indian was ten times darker than me she was almost the color black but she Was Indian. There are different types of black people around the world😩 ok.

Shiori actually does have feelings for Juri the creators have confirmed this Shiori has a very messed up view of love like most of the characters and likes manipulating Juri also Nanami while obsessed with her brother does not have sexual feelings for him they have a scene in the show confirming this and I think it’s important to make that distinction

    • @maxwellg9763

This is true, but that could have been because she was already psychologically scarred by that point in the series; if these implications were in the series earlier, unfortunately I'd have a hard time believing it wasn't true.

I’m not sure if the sexual contact between Akio and Anthy was ever consensual-maybe?-but it definitely was not by the end of the show. That time when Akio tells her to come over to him, and for the first time she doesn’t, followed by him quickly reaching out and yanking her towards him- that is where the show tells the audience that she wasn’t consenting. I read it as her remembering that she doesn’t have to sleep with him, and/or doesn’t want to. It is worth saying, though, that this doesnt mean she wasn’t consenting in any future instances.

My interpretation of the whole thing
Utena has many layers of interpretation. I tend to view it as mainly a metaphysical/religious theme. Anthy and Akio represent the concept of a immanent Goddess and a transcendent God, which are directly related to the concept of Shakti/Shiva in hindu religion (and the fact that they wear bindi and have dark skin suggest this connection).
Anthy is related to roses because the rose represents something beautiful which is dangerous when you come close to it, because of it's thorns. So Anthy is just reality in it's most pure form, cruel, mysterious, and wonderful.
Akio, as someone mentioned below, is related to the Fenix bird, which represents destruction, transformation, and reincarnation, and that's what Shiva represents in Hindu religion. But Akio has two sides, one is the malevolent and manipulative God which has no connection with anyone else (as a pure consciousness which is transcendent, but not immanent) and as the chivalrous prince, who symbolizes the revolution that Utena is trying to seek (which is Awakening or Enlightenment, which is both immanent and transcendent, but difficult to perceive).
In every battle, or in most of them, Utena becomes the good Prince for a split-second, and that's when she has the glimpse of awakening, which empowers her to win the duel against the mental and physical constraints that prevent her from realizing what's the true nature of reality (Anthy).
Each of the duelists are some type of constraint which the enlightened should be able to "overcome", so Saionji is Desire, Miki is intellect, Judy is love, Nanami is the physical body and Touga is the Ego.
Actually, I prefer to say,in a more abstract level, that Saionji represents "Object", while Touga represents "Subject". So in the spiritual path, the first thing you need to reconsider is your relationship to objects around you, which is mainly mediated by desire or aversion, and in the end you need to also destroy your concept of "Self", or "Ego", in order to attain the Enlightened state, which can be called Nirvana, or Moksha, depending on the religion.
Interestingly enough, in the first arc, Utena's biggest challenge is the Ego/Touga, which she's unwilling to sacrifice, and in the end of the series she become infatuated with Akio, which is basically a more "expanded" form of Self, or a more transcendental form of Ego. Only when Utena sacrifices this view, she's able to know Anthy.
I believe Miki is intellect for some reasons. First, because that's a trait of the character. Second, because in the movie he tells that he's always looking for more power. His sister is the "near enemy" of intellect, to which intellect leads to when it's not properly used, which can be dispassion, cynicism, lack of purpose, frustration, etc, which are traits of her character. She could also be creativity and imagination, as the sister of Miki, but because of his behaviour she turns into the opposite of all that, as her brother ends up abandoning her in the piano recital event.
Judy is love because, well, that's her main theme. And Shiori is hope, delusion, belief in fantasy, or miracles. Judy wants to free herself from everything, that's what she states in the movie, but she's driven constantly to the fake stories and expectations that Shiori represents. The later also gets to become a bigger antagonist in the movie.
You see, in the movie, Touga doesn't exist, because the Ego is already dead, and the only thing that's left for Utena is passion, and that's why she needs to fight Jury and Shiori. She has still a bit of "Nostalgia" for her naive sense of Self, which she ends up discarding anyway, together with all falsehood. The series first ending song talks exactly about the purpose of destroying lies and realizing the truth. That's also the revolution, the complete desconstruction of the Self, until there's virtually nothing left, and that's what the opening song is about.
Anyway, Nanami is infatuated with her brother because that's the attachment of flesh to the so-called "self", and that's why she's so broken when she realizes that they are not really related to eachother, just when Utena is in the Akio saga, dissociating even more from her sense of individual "self". Nanami is also frequently related to animals, in order to emphasize how similar she is to other forms of life. Nanami is the human body, but this body could be anything else, and it doesn't really matter.
Utena fights with her faculty of discernment, and ends up sacrificing every false concept she used to have about the self. In the end, she's able to see reality for what it is, and she loses because the will to transform and "revolutionise" fades away when the last false beliefs are destroyed. In the last battle with Akio, after she's stabbed in the back by Anthy, she realizes that despite all the suffering of the world, and all the lack of sense, she's still breathing, and still living, so she uses her last attempt to unlock the nature of reality, only to find that she was never a prince, as the prince was only a fantasy, and that breaks all the purpose for her existence.
But she doesn't really die, as Anthy states in the prologue, and once the pure immanent reality is free of the bounds of this illusion of omnipotent transcendent God consciousness, she's able to meet Utena once more in the movie, when the last reminiscent wish to be a prince is finally dissolved, and Utena interchanges roles with Anthy, so that there's no separation between reality and the one who perceives it.
Anyway, that's my interpretation for everything. It can be even more nuanced, but I'm tired of writing...

GREAT BREAKDOWN, thanks!! I started watching this anime a few weeks back, through an AniTuber, then, out of impatience with their sporadic uploading, started watching episodes on my own. Then...the Black Rose arc. **shuddering and confusion COMMENCE** So, AFTER a few of THOSE episodes, I ought to understand the series more by watching commentary on the show on YT. The VERY first one I watched nearly turned me off the series ENTIRELY. I decided to see if an AniTuber I knew and trusted could truly break the show down with no bias. YOU were the first, this time. I love your review style and while you still touched on lots of things that almost made me take a step back from the anime, your review vs rant style was refreshing and helped me see this one from a fresh perspective. So thank ya!!!
I wonder... 🤔 If this anime was rebooted, if they would touch on the issue of human trafficking, slave/stolen brides, and forced child pornagraphy as tackling more recently televised taboo youth subjects.

It was powerful and embodied the themes of the show. Also the music leading up to the durls, "Absolute Destiny - Apocalypse" adds a layer of dread and makes every fight feel important. Excellent soundtrack all around.

Please do a top ten pilot/first episode in anime series. This would include anime's that have more than one episode like deadman Wonderland with a great pilot episode to really capture the audience for the rest of the series and/or capture what the series is about. My personal favorite would hands down have to be Sword Art Online.
    Sincerely, Zeldicon.
PS: Not Zelda, actually a villain named after these Titans of mountain faces called Zendikar or Guardians.

This anime is really deep! I haven't seen it, but I understand why it's a classic. Also, it's true that what we expect from adulthood isn't always good. There are challenges to face and we have to even rethink many things.

the fact that utena is called out for not wearing a boys uniform is not a rom com trope 😭 this entire show is an allegory and if you watch on a literal level like that then youre bound to understand nothing and think this anime sucks

For the longest time I wasn't able to finish this show. I would always start it and something would happen and I wouldn't be able to finish and by time I was ready to continue I had forgotten a lot and decided to start over and so the process began again.
Three years ago I decided I was going to give it another go and binged it over a week...and now like Trigun, this is one I watch about once a year.

I should note that while it is taboo in Japanese culture to have homosexual feelings, Japanese Animation have had lesbian and even gay relationships in Anime ever since 1980s.
Utena is a work of fiction, so it should not be taken too seriously.

I understand why Japan feels that way. It has a very low birth rate and I hope I don't sound mean.

    • @xingyu1386
      @xingyu1386 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I agree, Japan had a long open history about homosexuality. I was surprised to find how many utena review videos talking about utena breaking the taboo. Just because they no longer publicly speak about it does not mean they are not aware of the culture. My bet is that the Japanese didn't feel half surprised or uncomfortable to see utena featuring lesbian love. It had been a theme of many shoujo genre manga/anime much early before utena. I think if people examine Utena carefully they shouldl find that the relationship between anthy and utena cannot be simply described as homosexual. It has blurred the boundary between friendship, love, as well as male and female. Utena is revolutionary, in one aspect, because it defies the stereotypical image of both homosexual and heterosexual.

I have one question about this review. Why now? It has been out for so long I honestly am curious at why a review on this channel is only coming out now, also If you think the show by itself at a lot of interesting "issues" watch the movie and try to piece to two sides of the story together it brings a whole new world of topics it goes over with the two side by side

Could you PLEEEEEEEEEEAAAASSSSSEEEEEE do a review of Future Card Buddyfight? It might seem like your everyday anime based around a children’s card game, but it’s so much goddamn more than just that. It gets absolutely insane as the series goes on. There are seriously multitudes of times where the one of the characters, at the end of the Buddyfight to defeat their opponent, uses a card that calls out a HUMONGOUS FREAKIN WEAPON OR MONSTER WITH A HUMONGOUS FREAKIN WEAPON/AN UNEXPLAINABLY MASSIVE AMOUNT OF STRENGTH THAT OBLITERATES THE OPPONENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So could you guys please review it? And I wasn’t exaggerating about the giant weapon thing.

  • @KrazyKinu
    @KrazyKinu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

A review should be more of a critical analysis of whatever you're reviewing, this felt more like a very lengthy and exhaustive recap of the series with a few comments added. It felt like you were going down a theme's checklist you found online and saying whether you liked it or not, saying nothing evocative or thought provoking. Critical Analysis can be something very difficult to fully grasp. Even your Thesis Statement for your review in the beginning did absolutely nothing but give a synopsis of the series. Think about what your overall plan is for this review, break it into smaller sections. Only give explanations of what happens to back up your points you want to make. Tell your viewers what you want to give them and then go for it-prove it with judgements made with evidence and give your review purpose.

Utena is saturated in christian symbolism. Akio even explains how his name is derived from the word for Venus, aka the morning star aka lucifer.
So while the growing up aspect of it is undoubtedly one way to take it. It was the toxic obsessions that caught my eye most. I have always had the theory that they were in purgatory... which is sort of like being a teenager.
I do consider this anime to be one of the best, deepest, ever made.

This is the creators of the Comic Dub series "Untold Stories of TePablo," reminding young children and their parents that "the topic of reproduction is okay to talk about... just as long as that someone is teaching them about the birds and the bees..."
This message has been brought to you by Haruhi Suzumiha; "JUST talk to your kids fellow parents. Just-" [Robin then breaks out of character, as an Ember is shown being used behind her] - WHAT THE?!?
TePablo the Tepig (voiced by Mat Pat of The Game Theorist and The Film Theorist: [Interrupting the sponsored message] JUST TALK TO THEM!!! You have no idea what it's like to be inside a Harem Anime, especially if it's one where the chance of dying is EVERYWHERE!!! Don't be a Harem! DON'T BE A HAREM!!!
