@@franky9928 That's less of a reliability concern - many of those have gone through the hands of cash strapped yobbos who neglected maintenance, drove them aggressively and even lowered the suspension or tried low budget performance enhancements. Dear Doug, thanks for giving this car some well-deserved credit. I was 16 when the mk1 debuted, I own a coupe today. I love this thing to bits and I love you for featuring it.
Hi Doug, thanks for another nice review, it would be great if you could review the coupe version. Just to let you know there were more power versions of MK1 TT(at least in Europe, not sure about the U.S.): 1.8T 150 FWD only, (163l in the last two years), 1.8T 180 FWD, AWD (190), 1.8T 225 AWD (240 Quattro Sport), 3.2 250 AWD. 25 years after I fell in love with TT MK1 I finally bought one(Coupe 180 Quattro, manual), it was an impulse buy as I saw one for sale and I could not miss that opportunity. The owner was an elderly lady in her late 80s who struggled to get in/out of the car for the last decade, so she did not use it much(hence the sale), she loved it and she said it was her fun car(owned other Audi SUVs). The car had only 24K miles on the clock(all confirmed with Audi) and it was still on the original tyres with plenty of thread(21 years old.) and still feels like new. The quality of the materials is much better than that of newer Audis. I love its minimalistic design and the surprising practicality of the coupe(a much bigger boot space) and rear seat which easily accommodates my young children. Anyway, it is now our family fun car or a date car (when the children are at grandparents I take my wife out in it). I prefer it much more than newer models of TT, this design was very different to other Audis and it was one of the most influential cars in the last decades and very futuristic in the late 90s. The TT MK1 aged very well and in the next decade, they will increase their value(at least the well-maintained, low-mileage ones without any mods). Best regards to all the TT owners worldwide!
@@toniukic4301 When you pronounce TT the english way it really sound like titty. But this is a German car, and in German the T sounds way sharper and harder. Pronounced in German it sound like to pistol shots.

My mom has one of these (2002 Quattro Coupe) and it's the car I learned to drive with so it has a special place in my heart. Not to mention that I've loved the design ever since I first saw it when I was like 5 or something. Unfortunately we're selling it sometime in the not so distant future because it's too expensive to drive and maintain, and I can't afford to buy the car from her. But I've made it one of my life goals to own one some day.
I have a 2002 225 Quattro Roadster. 45,000 miles. My favorite car ever..0 engine problems. It has been reliable (for an 18 yr old car) but parts are not cheap. I LOVE all the neat styling details. I’m 6’5” and fit just fine. It is a comfortable car to cruise in. Mine doesn’t have the cool baseball interior though. With the windows and air deflector up you can stay warm even on cooler days. Not the fastest or best handling car I’ve ever driven but it is a very enjoyable cruiser and still fun on mountain roads. Plan on enjoying it as long as I can get in and out of it.
I'm in the process of restoring my 2000 Neiman Marcus TT (#51/100), and I feel as giddy as I did when I got it new. It's about time that I gave it the love that it deserves. Mine is in the same color combo, but it's a hardtop. I never put the spoiler on it after the recall because I wanted it original, original.
No. Basically, but it all started with carthrottle doing a TT mk1 giveaway on insta and a followup video of how many wires they can unplug from the engine untill it just doesnt want to live anymore lol. Then came donut and now dough
Nah, id say this car would have been on Doug's list for ages. It's full of quirks and features. I don't think outside influence from other channels really effect him much at all. Hell, he likely doesn't even know what Donut is.
MJ Snosk8er Not my 2001 TT. No overheat issues are all. Two fans provide proper cooking in 100 plus temps, AC ON. Never had a temp issue in 18 years of ownership. Thanks
They didnt just do the 180hp version in fwd. Later on there was also a quattro version with a single exhaust tip. I owned one myself for three years. One of the most fun and unique cars I have ever driven. Beautiful car!
I'm 6' 2" and there's plenty of room. It's German, and Germans are tall. Plus: the door opens unusually wide. Making getting in and out much easier. Except from the useless rear seats. Which are best used folded down for massive hatchback storage.
The A4 design from then, ~2003, looked super amazing when it came out, you see its influence even today. Audi design was so good during this period. Their color use was ahead of the curve too.
As a historical note, the Ford Ka had that wheel arch look (New Edge design) which was released in 1996, as well as the Ford Focus which had wheel arch look in 1998. Of course, the Audi TT concept of 1995 had the wheel arches too....but wasn't in production until 1998. I always loved the Audi TT. A timeless design.

The TT was the first I bought once I got a job... I loved it, I had so much fun and so many memories. Doug forgot to mention there is a first aid kit behind the driver's seat and a safe behind the passenger's seat! at least the 2003 version did
I still remember the cars scene in Mission Impossible 2 where Tom Cruise was in a 996 and the beautiful Thandiwe Newton in a TT. This car was a turning point in car designs setting the 2000/Y2K era's rules
I think Doug's score on the acceleration was spot on. I've owned an S2K and currently own a TT. Yes, the S2000 is only slightly faster, but they're both different cars and the weight difference is substantial. The S2000 is RWD that only weighs 2800lbs whereas this AWD TT weighs nearly 3500lbs. The S2000 has a 2.0 or 2.2L VTEC engine that revs to 9000 or 8200 rpm w/ more hp versus this 1.8L Turbo AWD that revs to 6800. Even though the S2000 accelerates only a few milliseconds faster, the way it accelerates may be more exhilarating.

I've been waiting for you to do a review of the Mk1 TT. I have an 02 225 Roadster currently with about 350 hp and it is awesome! This car puts a smile on my face every day. The attention to detail in this car is truly remarkable for a mid-range sports car and the design is timeless. People can't believe mine is an 18 year old car when I tell them. I'm a bit surprised that you actually missed a few quirks that I thought you would get, but the video might have been too long then. All in all a Great review. Thanks!
I feel like any mention of the V6 without mentioning it was a VR6 is criminal. Doug even mentioned that it was impressive that VAG was able to fit a 3.2L V6 in such a small car. That only happened because of the narrow angle VR6 design.
no the TT never had the 210hp engine (engine code APY/AMK) of the S3 (8L 1999-2001) ... the later versions of the S3 (8L 2001-2003) recived the 225hp engine from the TT engine code BAM..the TT had the 225hp engine from 1998 till 2006... BTW in europe the TT was sold with much more different power and drivetrain options.. 150hp FWD, 163hp FWD, 180hp FWD and AWD, 190hp FWD and AWD, 225hp AWD, 240hp AWD, 250hp AWD... all engines were different versions of the 1.8T expect the 3.2VR6... the differents between a 180hp 1.8T and a 225hp 1.8T are giant... went from stronger engine block, different pistons to some hidden details like piston cooling by spraying oil on the button of the pistons all things the lesser engine missed
I had one of these but the coupe version, 225bhp with those wheels. Best car I ever had. I’m not into sports driving and the intricacies of how it handles. It just looked great, was a fantastic place to sit and felt of high quality.
Great references to other cars that used these distinctive design elements. So glad you reviewed this specific grey + baseball combo...it was shockingly modern (and fun) when it came out. I’m dismayed why you only gave an 8 in styling - but gave the S2000 a 7. The Honda is crisp but it doesn’t come close to the bauhaus(?) shape of this iconic design. IMHO this car (especially sans wing) is a already a classic and will still look cool in 30 years. When I here the word Audi...I picture this exact car and the ~2002 A6 4.2 quattro in silver with the factory 5-spokes. This review is one of your best Doug - thanks!
The fact that it lacks a screen, social media connectivity, a hot spot WiFi connection, or other stupid BS in cars these days makes it superior to new cars. Cars then were made for the pleasure of driving the car as the number 1 thing the car was built to do. That has been forgotten by every car manufacturer.
I think the Toyota 86/BRZ and the MX-5 are the only true affordable sports cars left these days. I mean yeah they have modern features like all cars should but the main focus is on driving dynamics and pleasure.
That's what i always thought as well. I recently saw a 2000 Bug with a big spoiler and i actually liked it much more than the TT, of which i was never really a fan of to begin with. Doug says it is underrated, but i remember here in Holland they were quite the rage for a while.
Yes, someone found the elephant in the room. I also thinks it's kinda cynical and bizarre, that the original TT's design got so many awards when it was actually so bad at providing the necessary downforce at the rear, that it literally *killed* some of Audis customers! Juries be like: "Well, they've neglected the aspect of aerodynamics in this design, to the point that the car gets dangerously unstable at high speed and some people have died due to this oversight. Functionally it's a failed design, it killed people...., BuT iT lOoKs CoOl. BEST CAR DESIGN OF THE YEAR!!!
Walter Röhrl said about the TT that it's driving great but it's just to difficult to drive for normal people at high speeds. You just needed to be a professional driver
but in modern that is done by the computer, it turns on again when you accelerate and more importantly, it doesn't turn everything off, so things like the steering don't get locked
there is also a Quattro with 180 hp. it has also only one exhaust. Regards from a driver of a base model tt mk1 in Germany with 275.000 km. The 1.8 t engine is one of the best Audi ever made !
“Turn off your engine if you are in a traffic jam.” Obviously if you are in a traffic jam, you aren’t moving, and therefore you won’t be coasting or need power steering or power brakes.
I'm from Romania and one year, coming back from seaside, there was a traffic jam leading up to the freeway (there's only one freeway linking Bucharest to the Black Sea coast). It was so bad we spent almost 3 hours to cover less than half a mile. Everyone not only turned their cars off, but if there was "progress" in moving forward, we just pushed them along a few yards. Instead of getting angry people were just chatting, having a smoke... So yeah, perfectly doable in a jam to turn the car off. And the steering lock doesn't engage unless you remove the key from the ignition barrel, not sure why he mentioned that.. The brakes aren't disabled either, they just revert to manual operation and you need to press the pedal harder to compensate.
@@vtr0104 I also saw this kind of traffic jams as a child on our way to vacations in France. Cars stopped for hours, everyone switches its engine off to not waste fuel, AC doesn't work anymore so everyone gets out and just chills on the highway. Nice memories.
I owned a 2001 225 and when it wasn't falling apart it was a pleasure to drive. Like a bad relationship, I spent way too much for fleeting moments of joy. What I loved the most about the interior was that it would nag you for a few moments if you hadn't put on your seat belt, but then stopped alarming and the seat belt light would turn off. It knew you were an adult, and figured you probably meant to do that. Props
Just a note the 180 hp did also come as a AWD and 3.2L was a VR6 engine same design as a Golf R32. The look of this car is just timeless. I had an AWD 180hp 2000 TT and loved it!
Oh the memories. This nimbus grey with baseball stitch cars was one of my first fun cars. Got so early they had not fit the rear spoiler and I never went in to get modified. I loved this car. It got a lot of looks in london back in the day.
Bought an 02 TT 225 roadster last year and it's by far my favorite toy. Other classic roadsters I have feel like you're doing 40, look down to see you're doing 70. The TT has a ton of pull and torque, bang through the gears to 4th, think you're doing 70, look down and you're doing 40...it's my favorite feature and hence she gets the most attention from me. Better feel than my other toys and no tickets is a HUGE +.

I feel like any mention of the V6 without mentioning it was a VR6 is criminal. Doug even mentioned that it was impressive that VAG was able to fit a 3.2L V6 in such a small car. That only happened because of the narrow angle VR6 design.

Doug is the type of person who runs out of gas in a traffic jam, causing a second traffic jam.

What I loved the most about the interior was that it would nag you for a few moments if you hadn't put on your seat belt, but then stopped alarming and the seat belt light would turn off. It knew you were an adult, and figured you probably meant to do that. Props
1:25 I bet every Z3 ever sold came with that exact sweater.

pretty much flawless design (for the coupe) and still looks great today
Just a note the 180 hp did also come as a AWD and 3.2L was a VR6 engine same design as a Golf R32. The look of this car is just timeless. I had an AWD 180hp 2000 TT and loved it!
Oh the memories. This nimbus grey with baseball stitch cars was one of my first fun cars. Got so early they had not fit the rear spoiler and I never went in to get modified. I loved this car. It got a lot of looks in london back in the day.
The old TT has a timeless design of the millennium
Bought an 02 TT 225 roadster last year and it's by far my favorite toy. Other classic roadsters I have feel like you're doing 40, look down to see you're doing 70. The TT has a ton of pull and torque, bang through the gears to 4th, think you're doing 70, look down and you're doing 40...it's my favorite feature and hence she gets the most attention from me. Better feel than my other toys and no tickets is a HUGE +.
Doug, the type of guy who takes the entire family into a two-seater convertible if nothing warns him.
Thank God there's a label
Not really that funny of a joke.
