I've been trying to do a little research on this line in the era from the late 1950's through to the 1970's. They had the transition from Steam to diesel and some really cool third rail "P" motors still around. Croton Harmon was the transition from third rail to the rest...really interested in those "P2" electrics that I guess had roots in Cleveland. And the other motive options New York Central used just before collapsing into the chaos :) SO my vote is those "p" series electrics that went from Grand Central to Croton. LOVE your channel BTW. Watching every video you have done. I amazes me that with all the Millions of people over the many decades of service up and down the east side of the Hudson, there isn't both more interest and more information out there. My Dad was a "commuter" riding that system for 50 years.....I remember vaguely seeing a Steam engine in Peekskill....trying to dig more information out about that line.

When you mentioned the LIRR EMD DM30AC, that picture was actually the EMD DE30AC.
The DE30AC numbers were #400-422 when ordered in 1998.
    DE: Diesel Electric
    30: 3,000 horsepower
    AC: AC power equipped
The DM30AC numbers were #500-522 when ordered in 1999.
DM: Dual Mode (like the GE P32AC-DM)
    30: 3,000 horsepower
    AC: AC power equipped
They were ordered to pull Kawasaki C3 bi-level coaches which were ordered from 1997 to 1998 with 23 C3 Cab Cars #5001-5023.
They replaced the aging ALCo FAs, the EMD GP38-2s, the EMD FL9s, the passenger serviced EMD MP15ACs, and the Kawasaki C1 bi-level coaches.
However, on October 23, 2000 in Huntington, New York, DM30AC #503 hit a shopping cart on the tracks, in which the shopping cart shorted out the third rail, causing the locomotive to catch fire. There were no injuries or deaths but #503 was damaged beyond repair. It sat in LIRR's Morris Park Facility being stripped for parts. Last year in July 2018, #503 was scrapped.
In 2013, DM30AC #507 suffered an electrical cabinet failure, but it was saved by being converted to a DE30AC. It had its third rail pickup shoes removed, was renumbered to #423, and returned to service.

Always wondered how fuel efficient these locomotives are.I actually was waiting to go home from Poughkeepsie to New York and the locomotive that took us home had been there for at least 45 minutes engine idling the entire time.

I found specs for the P42, at idle, HEP online w/400kw of draw, 37gph. Figuring Poughkeepsie is a fuel point, it could idle almost two and a half days, before its 2200 gallons is exhausted. Same figures show fuel consumption at highest of 198gph in notch 8 (1050rpm) or 172gph at 900 with HEP. That drops down considerably to pure idle, HEP offline, at a dozy 468rpm of a mere 4gph.
      www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?4,1871287
If you’re interested. I’d figure a tad better economy given the four missing cylinders on the P32.
Back to the point, I don’t think anyone would mind the missing 38 gallons from the layover.
