  • Waterproofing Foamboard for RC models is relatively easy, and this video will show you how. It is a quick 2 step operation that preps you model for paint and seals in the foamboard from moisture eliminating wrinkling and delamination of the outer paper.

    New flyers might not know about waterproofing, and this is a great way to show 'em how easy it is. Thanks!

    I use Polyshades for shading wargaming miniatures and also to both prime and protect terrain I make. Interesting to see another off label use. If you used a can that has pigment in it it perhaps it would be easier to see where you've covered.

    • @North49RC
      @North49RC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea if that is the case where that would apply it would be wise to use pigments. Usually for this application i use it for i can see where it has penetrated and where it needs more time or more product. Its actually easy to see the transformation. The paper laminating the foamboard will start to take on a translucent aspect to it. Takes a few minutes

    Wow, thank you very much this was very helpful. It's been 2 days I am searching online for something to prime my Foam Core Board before painting it with acrylics and brush. In another youtube video someone said to use water based but you mentioned oil-based....Is it written on the Minwax can ''water-based or oil-base''? or do I have to read the fine prints to find this info out? Also do we need to prime both sides of the board (if it is a flat board, like a canvas), as some say it will coil after it is dried, but if we prime both sides then it will not coil to either side. Appreciate your help.

    • @North49RC
      @North49RC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have found that the water based will say water based on the front of the can, oil based won't. Easy to tell that way. I don't prime until the object is built, in my case an airplane. Otherwise glue won't take to it well. Due to the nature of foam board over cardboard is the reason i will prep the outside with the minwax. By no means does this technique completely make your creation water proof. I can't say you could build a submarine with foam board and minwax will seal it off. Its just a weather proofing so the paper won't peel off the foam core. I havent done it with cardboard just for the fact that I dont have the need for it, but if you try it and it works let me know

    • @North49RC
      @North49RC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Need", no. You can clear coat it. And after you paint, no. You can do whatever you like with it as long as it serves your purpose. I do this for RC planes as a weather proofing. That was the intended purpose of this video. However i am not sure of your application. It really is just a protective base coat so the paint wont delaminate the paper from the foamboard, then gives you water resistance after it is dried. allows the paint to adhere to the surface in question. Hope this helps

    I have a question I make styrofoam head planters and I decorate and paint them can I use this and if I can do I put it on before or after I paint the head

    • @North49RC
      @North49RC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For planters that are constantly in moisture i would do 10 or so coats so it forms a shell of sorts over the styrofoam, like a M&M. Maybe even use a spray can. And because there wont be any paper on it you wont need to worry about water based or oil based.
      The only reason i use it on the rc planes is to protect the adhesive that holds the paper to the foam core. The paper and adhesive adds the structure to the foamboard, keeps it rigid. But if the adhesive breaks down from moisture the paper peels off and all the structure is gone. Floppy airplanes dont fly well.
      For your situation lay it on thick and heavy and it should increase the durability. You might have to experiment with it some. As a caveat I am not a planter professional so take it as a suggested best guess scenario. I would then paint and then add another coat or two to protect the paint. Thanks for watching

      I use a hot glue gun for what I build, its fast and easy. But i build the item first then apply the polyurethane. Thanks for watching

  • @timmy21r

    How much weight does a coat of minwax add? Is the extra weight negligible or does it affect flight?

    • @North49RC
      @North49RC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It will be unnoticable in flight. Of coarse adding something to it will add weight if that is a concern. But if you think of the weight of the smallest can of polyurethane on the shelves and divide that into 6 planes worth of coverage, then the fact that most of it gets wiped off. I guarantee you wont notice the difference with how it flies.
      Now if you plan on adding 7 coats of paint in 4 different colors with decals and the such, then there is where your weight will add up. How it does in flight compared to a naked airframe, not sure

    Can I paint with acrylic then seal with minwax

    • @North49RC
      @North49RC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its the moisture of the paint being a liquid that delaminates the paper. What I would say is try an experiment with it, see what happens. I will say I am no expert on the design and engineering of the FB, just a guy with a possible solution to a problem i was having. And by no means am I the guy who came up with this method. I am just the guy showing you what i have found has worked for me and my intended purpose.
      The polyurethane is just a base coat to make the foamboard easier to work with as far as the finishing process, before the paint. If you wanted to hit it with a second coat after the paint is on then have at it. I have used a clear coat applied from a rattle can after paint and it worked really well to repel and bead water, like a car wax. Poly over paint is up to you, i am not sure as to the results of that. Could work or it could ruin the paint being oil based. Not sure. If you find it works, let me know. If you find it doesn't, also let me know. I am sure at over 5000 views of this vid there is likely someone else with the same question, you could be helping them.
      Thanks for the comment

      @@North49RC oh, sorry if I wasn't clear. I meant that I wouldn't recommend painting with acrylic first then sealing with minwax, as putting acrylic directly on the paper made it delaminate in my experience. I had no trouble sealing with minwax first then painting, though. Just be sure to scuff up the surface after the minwax dries so the paint will adhere better.

    Does that work on Adams ready board and Elmers foamboard ? And I'm a bit confused as Peter in a Flite Test video
    took off the paper to put craft paper . What's the difference ?

    • @North49RC
      @North49RC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a very good question. I have seen the video of Peters technique and it is a good process if you want to add even more strength to the fuse or wing, but as a trade off, the more paper you add the more weight as well. He also added baby powder to the mix to give it substance to sand smooth once dried between coats. I have tried this as well and it does work but it isn't necessary.
      I also seen in the video that he is using a water based polyurethane, in doing this you need to soak the paper with the mixture using a brush before applying it to the plane or it will wrinkle because the paper you are applying will expand as it soaks up the moisture from the water base. This in turn is why he peeled off the original paper.
      The oil base does not expand the paper on the FB, so the need to peel the paper off is not needed. This process with the oil base is so much easier then Peters method, and creates an awesome base to paint on whether its by rattle can, air brush, paint brush, latex paint, acrylic, or oil base.

    • @North49RC
      @North49RC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh and to answer the second part of your question, because it is oil based polyurethane it will work on all brands of FB. The oil base does not disturb the water based adhesive they use to stick the paper to the foam
