I would be nowhere without these softwares. You can get them all with a comfortable monthly subscription, or you can get subscriptions to individual plans. Check them out and see what works for you. Can you make more tutorials showing each drawing in each frame like this about turning away, flying, turning in the air and fight scenes...? Thank you!
i used to think about making a perfect draw, so i was drawing a perfect picture yet taking so many hours, it's only just for 1 frame, and then i didn't know how to animate it because it's very hard to draw with the same portion. after i watched this video i realize that animation is more about how to animate things and to make things moving, and the perfect draw is the second, thank you so much bro, you're superb👍👍👍
Thank you very much, i agree that animation is more about the overall impression less about a specific frame. Ugly frames played together can look beautiful. Thank you for sharing what you learned!
WOW! I never actually understood this difference between artists till I watched this. I've always been better at going with the flow of what I put down and it always added up very well in some funny mysterious way, but I have struggled over the years to visualize what I want to do in my mind. I just realized I have spent years actually neglecting my strength. I'm going to work on that from now on
You were saying how rough these drawings were but they look awesome love the sense of movement as well. Would love if you did these real-time drawing in parts so we can watch the whole process
I feel like im both a map and a compass thinker. I tend to make ideas and keep them before making an animation and those ideas lead me to a sort of fuller visualization of what im gonna animate. Like im writing a map with a compass that I'll follow later. Cool stuff!
Have you ever worked with an inbetween/cleanup animator ? I'm curious to know what would be the result. Because you definitely seem to prefer doing rough animation, and your animations are extremely lively (which is kind of your signature). But on the other hand, some people would say each of your strokes lack "definitiveness". Same for your backgrounds, they just contextualize the animation, but they're not ultra polished like in industry standard animations. I don't mean it as criticism. Everyone has its strengths/preferences, and yours are very pronounced I think. You once evoked creating a studio, and I can't tell whether it was pure fantasy or a serious project, but I definitely think it would highlight your brilliant animations. Love your work, A fan.
Hey! Thanks for your question. Yes i currently hire an inbetweener. I draw the keyframes, make sure they are how i want them and then i create blank keyframes where i want the inbetweens to go and send it off to her. I actually encourage her to not be too concerned with neatness/ precision. I would rather the lines have the right gesture, energy and feel right rather than them being precise. I like the texture and energy of rough lines. I’m working on expanding the business to more people - bg artists, character designers, colourists, and eventually key animators and compositors / layout artists. The difficulty is that studios often get first pick on the animation talent. I have to put in a lot of work to network and find the right people to bring in. It is easy to find animators but not easy to find good reliable available animators who have got one key skill locked down. The studio is likely, but it will be a very flexible virtual studio which expands and contracts with the varying workload. A physical location is too much of an expense, and limits the workforce by location.
Hey!!! I want to ask you something Could you make a tutorial on how to animate _REALLY_ heavy characters?? Like Kaijus, Mechas, Jaegers(From Pacific Rim, the fan animation I want to make is from that movie) These characters are usually made in 3D, but I would love to learn to make these in 2D Youre a big inspiration for me, Your videos are amazingly well explained, and your style is unique Cheers from Brazil.
Just to butt in with a few loose thoughts. Giant movements, I think is a lot about momentum. It takes a lot of energy to both start and stop movement gigantic objects. A lot of people tend to focus on the slow motion effect. That all movements are slow when big. Even Pacific Rim falls into that trap for me. What I often miss in those shots is the feeling of massive speed of massive objects. Big things can move very fast, it just takes them longer to accelerate and decelerate. (I remember the animators of the recent American Godzilla films noting that they calculated that the Big G's tail was breaking mach speeds when just swinging from side to side). Also impacts and debris are crucial to sell the scale. So a lot of thought needs to be had about what is bent by the impact and what just crumbles and gets cut through because the target couldn't slow down the force of the object hitting it, while at the same time not being allowed to transfer the momentum to the rest of the target outside the zone of imidiate impact. Which is why I tend to prefer stuff like Evangelion because they sell the speed and weight of the mechs without it turning so sluggish and slow mo as Pacific Rim tends to do. tl,dr: I'd recommend Howards video about End of Evangelions fight between Asuka and the angel/eva hybrids.
You are such an inspiration to all young animators . I am a young animator myself and I uploaded my first ever short film on youtube , it would help alot if anybody gives it a watch and leaves a critique under . all comments are welcome
How does one animate in perspective ( where the camera moved around the action like in prologue- Richard Williams and the third and the cobbler ) if you can pls make a vid of it and pls answer
Great stuff! Though, i'm not an animator (i'm a writer), i know great animation when i see it. Your stuff is really good. Love your channel. First time commenting here.
Hello Howard I have a question or rather a request If you have time can you make a video on why to use a timing chart,if you use it and what type of animations to use timing charts in like in fight ,effect or character animation Also in animation sometimes I get really frustrated If i can't draw a pose or visualize what I want and it wants to make me quit but I want to still want to animate but the thought of that frustration scares me any tips on what to do please?
Hey man good to see you again, 1) I think that for most web-gen animators, timing charts are not needed. Timing charts are used to pass messages about timing, spacing, acting performance and editing decisions onto animators further down the production line (e.g. from animation supervisor to key animator, from key animator to inbetweener) They can actually stiffen up your animation a lot and make the whole process a lot less intuitive. If you have been getting by fine without them, i suggest continuing to not use them unless maybe you start wanting to get into a studio which uses timing charts. 2) go back to studying your reference. Take a picture of yourself in the exact pose you want and copy the picture. Problem solved.
did you by any chance have your fingers in the new league of legends animation clip for their song Phoenix? kinda looks a bit like your fingerprint on there ;o
Here's a question for you Sensei, I'm developing a style of animation that is heavily stylized and has a jerky expressive motion comic feel to it. Should I abandon this technique and go for a motion capture realism approach? It's 3d.

yes
