    Great progress vid... Someone once told me, in order to learn the guitar you have to be prepared to sound like shit for a long time. Any string instrument is hard to learn. Even if you are doing everything right, there are a lot of nuances you have to learn to make it sound good. For example, how hard you pluck the strings, how you touch and bend the strings, timing, muting, etc. I have almost given up dozens of times, but as long as you keep with it, you will improve; even when you feel you aren't.

That performance really set me up for what I'm aspiring to achieve in my musical career. I had such a great experience so early on, I had no idea what I was doing! This experience shown light that playing the guitar for me and others was something I could fall in love with.

    Your chords sounded a little strange because you played all the strings on all the chords. When you hit the right strings, it sounds wonderful, mainly because of its precision and speed with the strings. I'll give an example correctly: A minor only plays from the fourth string. but apart from that it was very top❤️❤️ I loved the video.

      Haha, thanks so much for watching. I’m glad you enjoyed the vid. I feel as though a lot people who make guitar videos have gaps in their guitar progress due to lack of video content. honestly its not the unrealistic u would just have to be pretty determined to actually learned cause ive been playing since august and i can already play quite a few songs like master of puppets, bohemian rhapsody, and some others but its just abt practice u can learn a lot in even one month if u put ur mind to it although ur fingers prob wouldnt like it lol

    • @math001
      @math001 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean some people just have more time to put into it and the training regimen is much more structured. I've been watching these kinds of videos for a while now and usually there's a noticeable skill gap between those who put in the time on fundamentals (chord+transitions, picking, strumming techniques, scales) vs those who mainly just play songs over and over.
      With that being said, I think this guy has come a long way in 1 year.

    • @benhulbertmusic
      @benhulbertmusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Haha great question, since playing a lot more and getting significantly better I've noticed that the ability to control the facial expressions becomes much easier. The funny faces were harder to control in the early stages of guitar playing. However, they did shine light on the capabilities of expression through your own facial expressions or body movements which I felt helped make me a better guitar player.

    Did you have any practice routine? Or is it just playing something? I am into solos but even easy solos are a little difficult. Not that much but still.
    Anyway, if someone can point out a routine or smth, please leave a comment

    • @benhulbertmusic
      @benhulbertmusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hey GentleVandal! I never developed a practice routine during that time. It was more so all about picking it up when I wanted to and not putting it down for hours. Practice routines are very helpful as I've learned studying music in college. However, if you're not required to learn something on guitar then just have fun with it. Find a band or song you like and just learn it, see a video about guitar and just watch it, set yourself up a nice place to play guitar and just play it. Everyday. Hope that helps guide you a little bit. P.S. Solos can be tricky to learn when you're first starting out so I recommend always learning the chord progression of the song/solo first then furthering your knowledge of the song over time. It won't sound that great for a little while but just keep at it. Patience.

    • @benhulbertmusic
      @benhulbertmusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You’re doing exactly what you need to be doing. Keep in mind, once you learn that E Major pentatonic scale which I think you mean E Minor. You can play that same scale across the whole neck. I highly recommend memorizing where each note is on the low E string, you can learn so much off this basic memorization. Do your own browsing on how it’s important.

    • @benhulbertmusic
      @benhulbertmusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To clear this up, I only bought one guitar. The Fender Jazzmaster. The first guitar you see was my older brothers. It was lying around for years since he played bass, I started out playing on his bass amp too. The white guitar in the school performance was the schools guitar. Finally, the acoustic guitar is my dads which he never really played but was always lying around. I was fortunate to have these guitars at my disposal which really helped with the progression of the instrument. However, I completely fund my own endeavors when it comes to music. All my guitars, amps, equipment, I purchased with exception of a few small gifts. There is no need to buy more than one guitar while you’re still learning but if you have others at your disposal, definitely pick it up and expand your horizon. 🤙🏼

      Haha great question! Short answer, nope. I just use touch of reverb on my instrument. Sometimes I’ll take all effects off to really work on my tone and intonation. Using all these effects can really hide you from mistakes and good technique. (Inspiration from Tomo Fujita)

    • @benhulbertmusic
      @benhulbertmusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Luke, some of my favorite albums to name a few would have to be 1.) Pacific Northwest '73-'74: Believe it if you need it - Grateful Dead 2.) Mordechai - Khruangbin 3.) Song of Her's - Her's (Rest in Peace) 4.) Smokin' at The Half Note - Wes Montgomery 5.) Dick's Picks Vol. 18: Dane County Coliseum, Madison, WI 2/3/78 - Grateful Dead. You best keep playing Luke, expect yourself to be horrible for the first 2 months at least, just keep picking it up and let time take its course. Good luck :)

      @@benhulbertmusic Thanks Ben, I love the Grateful Dead. I have listened to Dead Set so many times! Thanks for the encouragement. I'm struggling to see progress and having trouble with chord changes, but I just learned the riff to KIDS by MGMT and that's a lot of fun to play :)

      @benhulbertmusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Barre chords are a beast to deal with but one of the most powerful things to learn. I couldn't tell you the time frame of how long it took. From experience, learning barre chords hurts for a week or two. If you practice everyday you can learn very quickly how to play them, what they are, what works with what, where you can find them. As you continue to learn guitar and where notes are on your fretboard, all these patterns of.barre chords start to form. The worst part for people I find is they are unsure of how to properly finger a barre chord and or it just hurts their fingers. Just keep practicing :)
