Helpful hint while you’re pulling vacuum bleed the air from that line that does into the bucket full of coolant. Slowly open the fill valve until coolant reaches the bleeder. And also always close the vacuum valve and fill valve and see if she holds the vacuum for a few minutes. Not sure if you did that or not.

    Great video and good job.
Few words of advice from someone who worked on these Porsches for 20 years:
1-NEVER EVER .. use the water pumps with that METAL impellers, they will destroy your block by eating it the aluminum when the bearing goes bad. There is a reason why ALL OEM Porsche impellers are plastic. The plastic impeller is sacrificial, it breaks down when the bearing goes bad and it makes contact with the block, to protect the engine block.
2-The 71°C thermostat is OEM low temp, it is used to protect the engine from bore score .. or let’s just say delay it, as all these car will develop bore score.
    ALWAYS use low temp thermostat
3-Usually the car overheating is due to air in the system .. when you flushed the engine properly, the problem went away

When I replaced the water pump on my Cayman I opted for the OEM plastic impeller because if the bearing ever fails, the metal impeller will carve into your block and ruin it. That's what the boards taught me at least. Also, the low temp thermostat is used to prevent the two farthest cylinders on these flat sixes from lightly overheating on startup and promoting bore scoring over time.

  • @yoon-jaelee574

The low temperature (71C) thermostat is supposed to help prevent bore scoring by keeping the engine more evenly cooled. The M96 closes some coolant passages on start in order to get the coolant up to temperature more quickly (which helps with emissions iirc). Unfortunately, that can also cause uneven temps from cylinder to cylinder which can supposedly cause score in cylinders 5 and 6. The lower temperature thermostat opens those passages earlier, allowing the block and cylinders to heat for evenly.

i hope you didnt forget the bleeding valve open. With the system open like this the boiling temp is 100c and you will start loosing a lot of coolant. With the system closed and under pressure the boiling temp is higher. What you should of done in the garage is close the expansion tank and open the bleeding valve just like on a regular car. Let the air out until it start flowing coolant and close it and them go for a drive :P

Man you did great! Really fixed the overheating, also added a lot of value to the car as a bonus..
Love the colour, and you did well to fit high quality parts to fix all issues.
I would keep the special exhaust which came with the car.
I'm not convinced deleting the suitcase mufflers is a real upgrade. Yes it's loud, raw, but lacks in sufistication.
I must admit in some parts of the rev range it sounds impressive, but it would really get on my nerves in long distance driving as it's too loud inside.
I think you took a gamble on the car, which worked out great! It's been cared for obviously, expensive exhaust fitted, which sounds well balanced. Nice colour, good spec 911. And now she's fixed and ready for you to enjoy.

great video , in my experience in driving European cars now for over 43 years now most brands use a higher degree thermostat than north American vehicles , like my different Volvos run 89 or 91 degree thermostats, OEM parts are usually a better fit, the plastic impeller water pump i have heard not many good things about them, we know metal impellers stand up to the high temps better than the plastic ones do and the modern water pumps now with the o ring design are less prone to leaking also, I just changed a leaking pump on a Golf Mark 4 2 litre engine and found out the pump was fine just needed a new o ring seal so we got to return the pump, the car sounds incredible on those 3rd gear pulls, epic 👍

Just keep burping the coolant res and you'll be fine. Jacking up the 996 is a major PITA. I use a quick jack now. I own two 996s. Be sure you use a wooden block if you lift by the sump. You're not only a fantastic photographer, you're also a car guy who makes fantastic videos. Extra fun that you have a Volvo (I'm from Sweden) and also a 911, the world's most fantastic car. You do an amazing job, and I love your amazing photos and you are a great source of inspiration. 🤩👍

The blue color on the bolts is the modern plating on VW/Audi/Porsche, since they can't use cadmium anymore.

Great work again mate sounds epic 👍🏻. Only 1 mod you need to do is remove the back American overrides 😂

I had an old W202 that had that same exact issue with temps. I now wonder if the thermostat was replaced with a different unit like yours now, could have been an easy fix :(
