In a book about the show, I read that a special was planned, designed to focus on many of the mystery guests. The producers discovered that Mr. Daly spoke at length after the guests' identities were revealed. The guests didn't get a chance to speak except to say, "right" and "thank you.". Graceful Arlene often saved the day by breaking in to mention the guests' upcoming play or movie or nightclub appearances.
What's My Line is the most interesting and articulately intelligent show in history. The intelligent eloquence of Mr John Charles Daily as Moderator along with a panel of above average reasonably intelligent people resulting in this being the greatest television show in history.
The more I watch this show, the less I like John Daly's verbosity...it slowed down the show. Also, he so proudly portrayed himself as speaking so correctly, and then he'd always say "small conference," when, in fact, it should have been "short conference, since "long" has to do with length, while "small" has more to do with physical size.
Great fun Teddy! Thank you so much for gathering these wonderful bits of John! He was definitely irreplaceable.
John was a class act I wish he was still around.
