    You are not too young to start kendo at the age of 15. In Japan, we start kendo as young as 4 or 5 years old. I started kendo at the age of 7. My sensei started kendo at the age of 15. And now he is 7th dan and a main kendo instructor (shihan) of a Japanese university. Go for it!

    I first saw Kendo demonstrated on TV when I was 18 or 19, and I loved the look of it- the fact that there is so much ritual and tradition in it really appealed to me. However- there has never been a club within a reasonable distance of me - not even remotely close. Now, twenty-odd years later, a club has finally started within ten miles or so, and I'll finally get to have a go! I'm genuinely beside myself with glee this morning like a kid at christmas - I can't wait!

    Thank you so much for this video sir. Watching/listening to you explain the hand, foot, and body movements of the seiza along with the posture in detail gives me cause to move to Indiana with an eagerness to join your dojo. The rather small amount kendo training I've had in the past has been very informal and inconsistent. However, I've retained most of what I've learned. My very first martial arts sensei in hand-to-hand combat currently lives Indiana now (I've had several throughout my life starting at age 8), but he no longer teaches. We do stay in touch through social media though. He checks up on me every once in awhile. I sincerely hope that you continue with the patient cyber instruction sir. Mata-ne!

    I've found this video for the sake of writing, as in a story I'm currently working on, the main character is rather forcefully enrolled into her schools kendo club after she lied about being part of it to explain why her hands hurt from bashing a training dummy in a magical world that she creates for herself each day, so I am watching these videos to give myself an understanding in order to accurately portray it within my story, so thank you for your videos :)

    How to bow is different even in Japanese martial arts. Each martial arts have their own reason so you should know why and then perform. that way it won't confuse you.

    If you do the proper breathing, 3 breathings take about 45 sec to 1 minute. Do it a bit longer than 1 1/2 minutes as a start. 3 minutes sound right to me. So 10 breathigs. It depends on who are training too, I think. It is hard for beginners to sit in seiza for a long time. So adjust the length of mokuso for everyone.
    There will be an article about breathing in kendo at kendo-guide website. Come and check it out!

  • @Orowam
    @Orowam 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Seiza is the sitting posture etc. Zazen is meditation. Mokuso is meditation. I'm a noobie to kendo, Japanese culture, and a frequent meditator, but i can't say any specifics sry :P

      I apologize for my delayed reply. I was in Japan when you posted.
      You can learn all the basic movements alone. But you must know that you need someone to correct you.

    I was doing Kendo for 6 months, reached the 4th kyu and won at a local tournament. Then I had an accident in Karate and broke my knee so I stopped both martial arts, now 5 years after that, I can’t do Karate, but I can do exercises like running and working out. Do you think I could start Kendo again? Medically it is possible if I’m careful. But now I’m 19 years old and I don’t know if I can do it.

    Lol, you had to keep raising your hakama. But, it does block the view of your feet, so the people learning can't see xD. In the art I'm doing, there is a lot to do with feet, and since my sensei wears his hakama, he has to raise it for us 8th and 7th kyus. Btw, what rank are you at? 1st, 2nd 3rd, etc. dan?
