    I have a relatively heavy bokuto to practice with and I did it the first time few days back and my forearms and shoulders got an incredible workout. I do gym but this is actually a relevant skill to master for practical strength.
    hopefully I will get good enough to swing it swiftly and aptly

    • @KendoGuide

      Thank you for sharing your experience, @cpkeyes1823! 😄 It's inspiring to hear how the bokuto is helping you strengthen your forearms and shoulders. Keep up the great work! Pay attention to relaxing. It is easy to get tense and lose the correct form, and then your effort will not work as you expect it to work. Good luck!

    You said everything I did not want to hear. I am old, I am soooo old. 60 here I come. I have Suburi Bokuto. The Heavy ones, being that I never studied Kendo, instead Kenjutsu. That's why I joked about Kesagiri last year. I of course have Shinai and many Bokken varieties. My problem is both knees from Seiza Iai Waza, and I did Togishi for a few decades. I have more serious Hip issues now than knee problems. I tolerate my knees well, my hips are excruciating. I simply refuse to have surgery. I work in Pulmonary, I have seen too many failures to respond to surgical intervention.
    Oh I forgot. Tate Hiza. My favorite position. That was foolish of me.
    I hope you're doing well Imafuji Sensei.

    • @KendoGuide
      @KendoGuide  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Please you too, take care of yourself. We live in such a unusual time now. Please, 60 is not old! I am just speaking "generally". You know these sensei over 70 years old still beat young guys in kendo!
      Where were you when you were working as togishi? In Japan? I am so curious so I'd love to go and watch how they make a katana and of course polish or sharpen. I have seen one time but it was not long enough!
      I had acute asthma after I had my knee surgery. And unfortunately, they didn't have a lung specialist when I was in a bad condition. That was over weekend and they apparently said that the pulmonologist would not come until Monday!
      the nurses though I was not going to make it til Monday because they didn't know what was wrong with me. I had bronchitis and pneumoniai and they gave me medications for them. But not acute asthma because I had never had asthma until then.
      As long as healthy and we can do what we want, then that is what we want. So let's stay safe, healthy and strong!!

    • @uncleouch9795
      @uncleouch9795 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KendoGuide Boy, if you we're at my Hospital that likely wouldn't have happened. We have post operative Pulmonary Protocols. It allows us to write any order for medication and delivery system until the Pulmonologist does sees the patient and consequently adjusts the orders. Another thing is that many Hospitals did away with IPPB, and only use Nebulizers, and Inhalers. IPPB is a pressurized treatment. We give the Albuterol or whatever through a Nebulizer, except it isn't reliant on Inspiratory Effort and Capacity, it's actually pushed into your Airways and Lumgs at 18-22cm H2O pressure. It's Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing. So we open the Alveoli a bit more effectively. We still have a number of those machines in service and order it frequently. We do Cardiac Surgery here, it helps to have all possible treatment modalities available when you're cracking chests open.
      My Togishi history is admittedly unorthodox. I joined a Dojo that well, uses Shinken. We spend the first year with Bokken. Then we all are told time to get one if you don't have one. Today there are so many production Swords available. It wasn't like that in the early to mid 80s. We went to gun shows, flea markets, JSSUS shows, etc. To find our Shinken and refit it for the Dojo. On of the Renshi was a woodworker. He made perfect Shirasaya, and Standard Saya, Tsuka. He also did forging of copper and nickel, etc, and made Mokume fittings if I sword had none. He made perfect Habaki also. Well, I noticed that he was trying to polish the sword also, with Sandpaper. One night after class I asked Sensei about this. He agreed with me that we shouldn't let him do that. Sensei then kept me after class for Nakura instructions. He started send stones home with me. Training on junk swords, then, Oil Quenched Mono Nanban Tetsu types. By then I had bought multiple swords and had a No Shu Seki Ju Kane Michi with Hada that had chips, pits, rust. He instructed me through Jihada and Hadori. One day I came to the Dojo and he have me a gift. A complete stone kit. Brand new for me. It was one of those $500 Kits. Available at Namikawa Shoten. Unfortunately as you use stone, it disappears. I ordered the next set and the stones had already been downgraded. Less stone, lower quality stones also.
      Meanwhile I was going to Guns shows and hanging out with the local Shotokan Sensei. He hired me to clean up a couple of his swords. A few shows later, he's displaying them. Someone stops at the table. And older Nihonjin man. Everyone seemed to know who he was. They called him Dr Wada. Tsugayasu Wada. What kind of Doctor? PhD Metallurgist from Nihon working here in Michigan at Kenametal. Wada Sensei was looking at the swords I had worked on. He asked, who polished the sword. Everyone pointed at me. He became my Wada Sensei. I got thousands of dollars in Stone, Tunsten Carbide Migaki Bo all because of him, the best equipment and an expert in Tersu. I'm sorry, this isn't easy to even type. I've been lost without him. He made everything happen for me here, to the best of his abilities. He entrusted me with 3rd Generation Ise Muramasa, and many many incredible Nihonto. Right when everything was going beyond my dreams. Traveling to JSSUS Nihonto shows, planning on going to Nihon, etc.
      Like the Sakura
      My world ended
      I have not been the same since.
      What happened, well, I "was" married.
      BTW. My name is Alex. The President of the JSSUS knows me. I have worked for him also. I stay out of public now. I am older and wiser. Like Musashi I made a Cave (figuratively speaking) to spend the rest of my time in. I'm a Monk now.
      I'm typing on a cell phone. I tried to get all of the errors corrected. It appears to be impossible. 😂

      Imafuji Sensei. I will never forget that day. OMG, Wada Sensei just looked at me silent. I was melting inside. I thought what have I done!!!
      This larger Very Serious Nihonjin Man comes up behind him. Wada Sensei he's Funabashi san he looks at my work and looks at Wada Sensei, and shrugs. Funabashi san looked at me very differently. Sort of that Yakuza Oyabun look, you understand right? I know that you do. OMG I was shrinking, becoming smaller and smaller. LOL.
      They left.........the next Monroeville Gunshow. Wada Sensei starts talking to me. My whole world changed forever. Study Oshigata, Books, Books, Books, Nihonto Koza, Hawleys, on an on.
      Regardless of how things worked out. I am incredibly fortunate, gifted with knowledge I never thought I would have. Gifted with time and friends I never thought I would have. Wada Sensei passed away some years ago.
      May you rest in Peace Wada Sensei.
      And thank you Imafuji Sensei for being here for us.
      Domo Arigatogozaimashita! 🙏

    I'd be careful if one is new or a novice (has not been to a dojo) of Kendo about swapping one's legs too much out of the standard form. I am all for being careful about not overworking one side to the point of failure of the other half of the body and listening to one's body to prevent injury. The reality is though that novices will think that they are free to swap their foot work around as much as they like in Kendo, which is not the case. It might be better to do the correct foot techniques for the majority of the time so your body develops a muscle memory around correct techniques, rather than thinking from a beginner's perspective that anything goes in terms of footwork, swings, areas to target and so on.
    It can look like in a Kendo match that anything can go, but the reality is that only some techniques are acceptable for scoring purposes. It's not necessarily about ingenuity, and more about efficiency in that sort of a setting. That's why there is so much repetition in Suburi. Not because it is boring, but because it is efficient.

    • @KendoGuide
      @KendoGuide  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much for your input. That is a great reminder for beginners. You pointed out a muscle memory, repetition and correct techniques. I am all for it! That is why you need a good teacher.
      The basic is the core. And also many other ways to instruct kendo leading to the core are also important. That is my thought.
      You maybe didn't like the word "I get bored". That is me. I get bored quickly. :) After having been repeating the basics for almost 40 years, I also think a variety of ways to learn kendo for people, especially later starters, is necessary.
      You are right about some techniques are not efficient in kendo matches. And that is also why we lost many other techniques because there are not efficient to get a point in matches. That is also unfortunate.
      My goal here is not to efficiently get a point in matches or shiai. So these suburi is not for that purpose. If you want to get a point in shiai then you need to train to do so. Different purposes, different training.
      But again, you are right about muscle memory, repetition and correct techniques. I am with you.
      Again thank you very much for sharing your opinion. It is a good reminder for beginners!
